Addison Trail students featured in ‘Fra Noi’ Italian magazine Students in Addison Trail world language teacher Judie Vitiritti-Lynch’s Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level Italian class (pictured at right) were recently featured in the publication “Fra Noi,” Chicagoland’s Italian American Voice.

A photo of the students appears in the January edition of the magazine, along with an essay from Addison Trail senior Claudia Herrera.

All pupils in the class submitted a reflection piece answering the question, “What has studying Italian for six years or more done for you?”

Herrera’s response was selected for print in the “Nuove voci” (New Voices) section.

Below is Herrera’s reflection piece, in English: “I have studied Italian for six years, and all this time I have felt that learning the Italian language was something so important for me. I already speak two languages, and I wanted to learn more. For me, Italian class gives me the opportunity to learn about another culture. Italian class also creates a familial atmosphere, which I don’t feel in (other classes). This is what changed me and how I perceive the language, the culture, their gastronomy, etc. I like that we also speak about things that are important to our society. It is not a normal class – it is a class that changes your life, because it teaches you everything – not only how to speak the language. It gives you the ability to travel to Italy without any worries.”

In the spring of 2017, Michael D’Agostino was heartbroken when he was told by the store manager that the job of greeter was being eliminated at the store. D’Agostino, who has physical disabilities, had worked weekends as a greeter at the Addison Walmart for 17 years.

“I told them I would do any other job if they weren’t going to have greeters any more,” D’Agostino said, “but they said there were no other jobs for me.”

He finished his last Friday shift and punched out for the last time. No one even said good-bye.

“I couldn’t believe they let him go like that,” said Addison resident Rachel Lobello, who looked forward to seeing Michael at the Walmart each Saturday when she did her shopping.

After speaking with the Walmart manager and being told they would not reconsider keeping D’Agostino, Lobello reached out to the community on his behalf.

“Robertino (Presta) the owner of Caputo’s heard about Michael and said he would hire him ‘on the spot’ to be a greeter at the remodeled Caputo’s Fresh Markets store,” said Lobello.

On Friday, Jan. 11, Michael was working his shift as a greeter at the front door of Caputo’s (he has been at it for six months now) and also took part in the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new addition to the store.

The Caputo’s on Lake St. has a long history of hiring folks for what they can do, and accommodating any employees who may have a disability.

“I’ve been here 14 years,” said Matt Ladd, who regular Caputo’s customers will recognize as he gathers carts in the parking lot, “Mr. Robertino [Presta, company CEO] takes good care of us.”

Bagger Payton Knights loves her job so much she walks to work each day.

“I have a cold today, but I wouldn’t miss the grand opening,” she said.

“I’ve taught special education, and I know how important it is for these folks to fit in. They just want to contribute like everyone else. A job is very important,” Lobello said. “I noticed they still have greeters at Walmart. I won’t shop at there anymore.”

Aurora man to serve seven years for fatal DUI

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that an Aurora man charged in a fatal crash that claimed the life of 36-year-old David Dokken, also of Aurora, a passenger in his vehicle, has been sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Michael Vera, 36, Aurora, entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated DUI causing Death, a Class 2 Felony, in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay, who handed down the sentence.

Michael Vera On Nov. 23, 2016, at approximately 2:35 a.m., Vera and Dokken were traveling on Naper Boulevard west of Ogden Avenue when Vera lost control of the vehicle, drove off the road and struck a tree, seriously injuring Dokken. Dokken was transported to a local hospital where he passed away due to injuries he sustained in the crash. Vera was also transported to a local hospital where it was determined that his blood alcohol content (B.A.C.) was .183. Tests also revealed the presence of cocaine and marijuana in Vera’s system. An investigation into the crash led by the Naperville Police Department led to the charges against Vera.

On May 10, 2017, Vera was picked up on a $1 million with 10% to apply arrest warrant from the Kane County Jail where he was being held on unrelated charges and transported to DuPage County. He has remained in custody in the DuPage County jail since that time.

“This very sad case is yet another example of the potentially fatal dangers of drinking and driving,” said Berlin. “Just days before Thanksgiving two years ago, Michael Vera’s life changed forever and David Dokken’s life ended when Vera made the decision to drink and then get behind the wheel of his car. That decision not only cost David his life, but it also cost the defendant his freedom. Drunk driving accidents are not accidents, they are one hundred percent avoidable.”

Vera will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets grocery store has been an icon in Addison since 1991. “[Founder] Angelo chose Addison as the first town to expand to outside of his first store in Elmwood Park,” said CEO Robertino Presta.

Presta was addressing a crowd of family, employees, Village elected officials, customers and other well-wishers during the ribbon cutting ceremony held on Friday, Jan. 10.

The store, located at 510 W. Lake St. in Addison, recently built an addition that added services such as a sushi stand, salad bar and, of course, the fresh produce that built the Caputo’s brand.

While Angelo Caputo was out of town and not in attendance, “he is in a much warmer place,” quipped Presta, Angelo’s daughter and company President Antonella Caputo Presta helped cut the ribbon along with Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra.

Congressman Raja votes to ensure working families receive their tax refunds without delay Last night, Congressman Krishnamoorthi joined his colleagues in passing the FY 2019 Department of the Treasury and IRS appropriations bill to ensure Illinois families will receive their tax refunds on time and in full.

Due to the partial government shutdown, only 12% of IRS employees are currently on the job, meaning that thousands of families’ tax returns are vulnerable to delays and administrative error.

Slices of life I used to worry. About a lot of things.

I used to worry about what other people had and what I didn’t and then I realized I didn’t use or need half of what I had anyway and life went on.

I used to worry that I wasn’t old enough and then I woke up one morning and worried maybe I was too old and I saw the lack of logic in that and decided I was simply the perfect age, right here, right now, and besides it’s all I was capable of being. And life went on.

I used to worry about a clean house. I still do, sometimes, I guess, but a dirty house is no indication of the level of happiness inside. A dirty house indicates living. Living is good. It’s a lot better than merely

I used to worry about impressing people and then I came to understand that it isn’t what others think of me, but what I think of myself.

I used to worry about acquiring more things. Now I worry about how I’m going to get rid of things and live with less clutter and more clarity.

I used to worry about expressing

my viewpoints and opinions because they might not line up with someone else’s and that would cause discord.

Then I learned to live with a little discord or at least ignore it and not let it own me. I realized there is no possible way to please everyone so I might as well just be myself, and go on with life in the best way I know how.

I used to worry about the future and then the future became the now and I came to understand that everything unfolds at its own pace with its own plan and ruminating about it isn’t going to change anything. It is only going to change me – in a negative way by stealing time and energy that is better spent in other ways to help life move forward.

The Most Rev. R. Daniel Conlon, bishop of the Joliet Diocese, will present “Did Jesus Really Intend to Establish a Church?” on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m., when he gives this year’s Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Lecture at Elmhurst College. It will be held in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

As bishop of the Joliet Diocese since 2011, Conlon has served in a number of national leadership roles. He was chairperson for the U.S. Conference of Catholic The Most Bishops’ Committee for the Protection of Children and Rev. R. Young People, and currently serves as the conference’s Daniel liaison to the National Catholic Committee on Conlon Scouting.

Bishop Conlon previously has served as a member of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Marriage and Family Life, and he is a member of the Canon Law Society of America and the Mundelein Seminary Advisory Board.

EAM to celebrate 100th anniversary of influential Bauhaus school “Overseeing one of only three houses in the U.S. built by Mies van der Rohe, the final director of the legendary school, the Museum is uniquely positioned with international partners to reveal the global impact and legacy of the Bauhaus,” said John McKinnon, EAM executive director. “We’re proud to present exhibitions and programs about the lasting legacy Mies left in Germany before he completely transformed modern architecture from a home base of Chicago.”

The Whole World a Bauhaus: Feb. 16 – April 21 Touring the world, the exhibition The Whole World a Bauhaus will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, which revolutionized the parameters of art, craft, and technology. Elmhurst will be the only stop in the United States following appearances at museums in Buenos Aires and Mexico City. The eight chapters of the show focus on different aspects of the work and life at the Bauhaus during its operation. Photographs and documents combine with art and

design pieces by Bauhaus masters and students—such as Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Josef and Anni Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, Marcel Breuer and more.

The eight themes - Art, Crafts, and Technology; Floating; Community; Encounters; The Total Work of Art; New Man; Radical Pedagogy; and Experiment - highlight the work students did in their revolutionary workshops with industrial materials and processes, the school’s major impact on the international avant-garde, and how the students and instructors sought to rethink their world.

Many of the influential figures and others involved at the Bauhaus left Germany and spread the school’s lessons internationally, including Mies and other figures who emigrated to the U.S. Mies became the director of the Department of Architecture at the Armour Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) and went on to create glass and steel structures that are now a hallmark of Chicago’s skyline.

He influenced generations of students and is now considered one of the 20th

Century’s greatest architects. His prefab prototype, the Museum’s McCormick House, has been revitalized via recent restorations and will be the site for site-specific projects by two Chicago-based artists.

Assaf Evron & Claudia Weber: Feb. 16 – April 14, 2019 With an experimental spirit and contemporary lens, the artists Assaf Evron and Claudia Weber will transform the former McCormick House. Israeli-born Evron will create an installation inspired by Mies’s handmade collages to connect features of architecture with ideas about immigration, including his own personal experiences. The windows will be treated images of Germany and the Middle East furthering a conversation about global citizenship, while also collapsing rational architecture with the natural world. The German-born Weber will actually reside in the other half of the McCormick House. For the duration of the exhibition, she will research the house, create changing installations, showcase the works of Olivia Block and Kate Park,

interact with visitors, and host a variety of events. As she lives, works, and exhibits in the space, Weber’s projects will reflect on the structure’s history as a prototypical home and current function as a museum space. Related programming A highlight of related programming is certain to be ‘Virtual Bauhaus,’ March 1-22 in which Museum visitors, via virtual reality glasses, are able to ‘tour’ the iconic Dessau Bauhaus School as former student, interacting with and exploring its architecture, design and educational philosophies.

“The primary benefit of Molecular Breast Imaging

is that it acts a supplemental screening device in patients who have dense breast tissue,” says Dr. Darius Gilvydis, Medical Director, Edward Hospital Women’s Imaging Center. “The reason that’s important is that dense breast tissue is recognized as a risk factor for breast cancer.”

In addition to patients with dense breast tissue, MBI may benefit patients with: *Persistent breast pain or a palpable finding, but mammograms with no abnormality *Breast reduction or augmentation *Increased risk of breast cancer but unable to undergo MRI (due to claustrophobia or implanted devices that preclude an MRI) MBI exams themselves are similar to mammograms but the compression is about 30 percent less, so patients experience less discomfort during the exam. In addition, patients are able to sit comfortably during the procedure.

are given an injection of a short-lived radioactive tracer agent, similar to those used in cardiac stress testing, which accumulates in the tumor cells and shows up as hot spots in the resulting images.

The gamma camera used in MBI differentiates between tumors and dense breast tissue, unlike the X-ray imagery used in mammography. MBI technology is designed to provide similar views to that of a mammogram, giving the physician the ability to compare images from similar perspectives.

In celebration of Bauhaus100, the centenary anniversary of Germany’s short-lived but influential Bauhaus school of art and design (1919-1933), the Elmhurst Art Museum will host the only U.S. appearance of the international traveling exhibition, The Whole World a Bauhaus, from Feb. 16 – April 21. This comprehensive survey will be complemented by Assaf Evron & Claudia Weber, a pair of site-specific works being staged by the Chicago-based artists within the Museum’s adjacent Mies van der Rohe McCormick House.

The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in Weimar, moved to Dessau in 1925 and closed in 1933 in Berlin under pressure from the National Socialists; Elmhurst Art Museum will present a range of contemporary art and design programming to provide context for the ongoing influence of the school. In addition to the exhibitions, programming highlights include a virtual reality ‘tour’ of the Bauhaus in Dessau, lively oral histories by former residents of the McCormick House, a teen design competition and more.

Willowbrook girls bowling team records key conference win against York Helsper rolls 266, Pettinger a 234 in win against Dukes

The Willowbrook girls bowling team came out on top of a recent West Suburban Conference showdown with York at Stardust in Addison.

Willowbrook downed York 3,3953,065 to run its record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in WSC action.

Holly Helsper shot a 266 game against York, while Katie Pettinger had a 234 in that contest. Brianna Bryant rolled a 598 high series in a recent conference match.

Through late last week, Pettinger was averaging a 194, while Helsper was at 183.

“We are starting to learn about the lane conditions and how to play them correctly,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen. “As we are bowling from frame to frame, the girls are talking about their lines and if they need to make any adjustments. They are learning how and when to move based on each other’s shots. This is crucial for the girls to learn so we can always stay ahead of the transitions of the lane.”

Allen cited recent strong play from the likes of Paula Williams and Bryant, in particular. “Paula and Brianna have been bowling very well over the past month,” said Allen. “They have been very consistent with making quality

shots. Both of their spare games have improved greatly, which is leading to bigger and better scores.”

Allen added Willowbrook is reaping the benefits of the work it puts in

the girls are bowling, we feel like we are going to bowl great. Keeping in a positive mindset has helped us battle through some very hard lane conditions throughout this season.”

Willowbrook recently played in invites at Fenton and Hinsdale South.

The Warriors have conference matches slated this week against Hinsdale Central and Leyden.

Addison Trail girls basketball team battles Downers Grove South Berumen scores 12 points in conference game

During the first meeting against Downers Grove South this season, the Addison Trail girls basketball team lost 56-21.

The second time around was a bit different. While the Blazers still lost 60-41, coach Rob Schader was proud of how his squad played.

“We lost by 19, but Downers South

is good,” he said. “They have a Division I softball player who was out the first game. We also played with a running clock in the first game.

They have another girl who is going Division I to Colgate. I thought we played really well considering how good they are. They have three pretty good kids. We did a much better job on defense and rebounded better. We also scored much better and that’s something we’ve been doing the last couple of weeks.”

Addison Trail also played Hinsdale South in a recent WSC Gold game.

“Hinsdale South got us by 12 points

the first time (47-35),” said Schader.

“They have a really good freshman whose parents both were athletes in the Big 12 Conference and another girl who has been a starter for three or four years.”

Schader said improvements have been coming in across the board of late. “We’ve played much better,” he said. “Offensively we’ve done much better and our defense is much better.

I think we are much better all the way around.”

In the Downers South game, Schader lauded the play of Serena Gilliam along with the returning

Brenda Berumen, along with freshman Quiana Birmingham. “Serena played really well and Brenda was back and had 12 points. Serena did a really nice job on one of their girls,” he said. “Q is our freshman and did a nice job on their point guard, who was tough. She was fast and pretty good. Q did a pretty good job all things considered.”

Addison Trail continues to benefit from a roster that has plenty of depth.

“Everybody is doing something,” said Schader. “We can play eight or nine kids every night.”

Addison Trail had one conference

win through late last week. “We’ve played everybody now except Proviso East and Willowbrook beat them,” said Schader. “The conference has been solid forever and I think now teams are a little closer. We only have one win, but right now the conference definitely is more competitive than it has been in the past from the first team to the seventh team.”

The Knights played IC Catholic Prep earlier this week in a non-conference game and had additional games slated against Hoffman Estates (non-conference) and Morton (conference on Saturday) this week.

steals. Knudtson had nine points, while Dasbach had six points and 10 rebounds. K’aliyha Herron had six points, five rebounds and three steals.

Tumilty had seven rebounds and three assists.

Willowbrook also downed Proviso East for the second time this season, this time by a 67-59 count.

Proviso led 18-8 after the first quarter and 35-30 at halftime. Willowbrook outscored the Pirates 20-16 in

the third quarter and 17-8 in the fourth quarter. Willowbrook scored 42 combined points in the middle two quarters.

Tumilty tallied 21 points (2 three-pointers) to go with nine rebounds. Herron had 13 points. Maura Heneghan had 11 points and shot 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Knudtson had seven points, four assists and four steals, while Dasbach had three blocks.

Bison send three boys bowlers to sectional round

The Fenton boys swimming team continued its forward progress after finishing third as a team at the recent eight-team Elk Grove invitational.

Fenton finished behind Highland Park and Cary-Grove Nik Fischer won two individual events for the Bison. He also set a meet record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.07.

Conrad Oberski took second in the 50 free.

Fenton’s 200 medley relay team of Fischer, Obserski, Matt Janovsky and Lucas Feddersen took second.

In other recent action, Fischer and Obserski led the scoring for Fenton in a dual meet against Riverside-Brookfield.

Fishcer and Oberski each won two individual events. Fischer and Oberski teamed up with relay members Janovsky and Jordan Loyola to record a first-place time.

Jason Gasior took second in the 500 freestyle, while Janovsky was second in the 200.

Prior to the holidays, Fenton took second at the Leyden invitational.

Fischer and Oberski each had two individual wins and were part of two relay victories.

Feddersen earned an individual win and was part of two relay wins.

The second-place finish is believed to be the team’s highest finish in an invitational in many years.

Fenton finished with 314 points, 14 points behind winner West Chicago co-op.

Fenton boys bowling The Fenton boys bowling team was seventh at the recent Glenbard East regional with a 5,411 pinfall count.

On the individual front, the news was good with three Bison bowlers earning berths in Saturday’s sectional round where trips to the state meet will be on the line.

Junior Joey Potkay rolled a 1,212 series to advance. Sophomore Henry Valenzuela rolled a 1,139 and sophomore Matt Sipes rolled an 1,126 to also advance to Saturday’s sectional.

Portkay was seventh overall in the field.

James Palumbo shot a 1,011 series and Arthur Kawalkowski finished with an 807 series.

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team started the new year off on the right foot with a pair of West Suburban Conference Gold Division victories.

The Warriors were 120.8-116.0 winners over Leyden in conference play. On vault, Tess Placek was first with an 8.65. Karli Wilson was second with an 8.40, while Riley Wieringa had an 8.20 and finished third.

On bars, Wilson was second with a 7.50, while Placek was third with a 7.40. Maeve Costello finished with a 7.00.

On beam, Placek was first with an 8.40, while Wieringa had a 6.60 and Wilson had a 6.55.

On floor exercise, Costello won the event with an 8.20, while Placek tied for second at 8.10 and Wieringa was fourth at 7.70.

Placek won the all-around scoring at 32.55. Wilson was third at 29.95, while Wieringa was fourth at 29.30.

“Varsity had its first win and our

JV lost by only 0.25 points so we are on the right track,” said Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski.

In the JV 1 meet, Leyden won 92.25-92.00.

Helsper won the bars competition with a 5.40 score. Lorann won the beam at 6.60. Helsper was third at 6.10 and Crowe was fourth at 5.90.

On floor, Crowe was third at 7.20, while Lorann was fourth at 7.00. Helsper was tied for fifth at 6.90.

Helsper won the all-around at 26.30. Lorann was second at 25.30 and Crowe was fourth at 24.55.

Willowbrook then defeated Morton 118.55-109.40 in a Gold Division meet.

Placek won the vault at 8.50, while Wilson was second at 8.20 and Costello was third at 7.90. Caitlyn Owen tied for fourth at 7.80.
