Governor, Lt. Governor come to DuPage County Present task force ideas to reduce government, save billions ‘with a B’

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti were in Oak Brook on Monday, January 4 to attend a meeting of the DuPage County Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC). At the meeting, Sanguinetti formally presented a 406-page document to Gov. Rauner containing 27 recommendations of the Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates Task Force, which she has led for the past 11 months. Working along with the Task Force were students from the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University, who helped collect and analyze data.

Gov. Rauner said the goal of the Task Force was to present ways for government to operate more efficiently; to stop the proliferation of taxing bodies in Illinois, which has more units of government than any other state in the country; and, to allow decisions about consolidation or dissolution to be decided at the local level.

DSCC receives grant for new technology LOMBARD — The DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) has been awarded a $24,500 grant from the Alfred Bersted Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee, officials said last week.

This grant will help DSCC purchase new computer technology allowing compliance with new regulations.

“The generous support of the Alfred Bersted Foundation will help us replace our old, outdated computers that run slowly and are unable to run new or updated software,” said DSCC Executive Director Marylin Krolak. “By supporting the purchase of new computer technology, the Foundation is helping DSCC increase our efficiency, increase our capacity, and better serve DuPage County seniors in need.”

Addison Trail hosts annual Poetry Slam

ADDISON — On Dec. 15, nine Addison Trail students participated in the school’s annual Poetry Slam. Students shared their original works in the first two rounds of competition and then competed in a lightning round, where they had five minutes to write a poem based on a provided topic.

First place went to Jeremy Sechan, 2nd place to James Krause Jr., and 3rd to Lucio Delgado. Winners received gift certificates to local restaurants. Other participants were senior Marlene Alvarado, senior Isabel Carrillo, senior Lia Caruso, sophomore Manuel Martinez, senior Emily Szabelski and freshman Brayan Villegas.

Participants were judged by Writing Center Aide Claire Shoup, English teacher Katie Prast, English Department Chair Amy Ferraro and junior Maxwell Dziabis (student of First Semester for English).

Continued from page 1 is a four-year moratorium on new taxing bodies; giving residents the ability to consolidate or dissolve government entities by referendum; and, urging consolidation of units of governments especially where there is duplication or overlapping of services.

“It’s been wonderful to collect testimony and actually come to an accord on 27 proposals,” the Lt. Governor said. “The idea is to give power back to our local leaders and local residents so you and I can determine what’s right for our own communities, rather than big government.”

Gov. Rauner stressed that the document was not a partisan effort.

“That’s very important, number one,” he said. “Number two, if we implement the recommendations [in this report], we could save billions of dollars every year – and that’s billions with a ‘B’ not an ‘M’ – billions of dollars every year, year after year.”

The governor echoed Sanguinetti’s comments about empowering local communities to make decisions without “big government” interference. He said he would never force his will on another community any more than he would want some-

one to force their will on his.

Rauner said business owners tell him it’s the property tax burden that makes it hard to do business in Illinois.

“It’s is dragging our economy down, it’s pushing great jobs away, our careers away, but most of all, it increases the overall cost of government. It’s money that could be going to our schools, our classrooms, our teachers and students, that’s where our money should be going. Instead we’re spending money on government and bureaucracy. It’s also money that could be going toward helping our most vulnerable families.”

Rauner called the report a “critical” document presented on one of the “most important days in the history of Illinois.”

“Today is a great day for the taxpayers of Illinois. We can transform our state through this effort,” he said. “This document, if we implemented it, the recommendations here could save billions of dollars every year for the people of Illinois.

This is major, major transformation we’re talking about.”

Two offenders were arrested for driving while impaired; 15 seat belt citations; and 12 failing to secure a child in a safety seat citations were issued.

The local effort was part of a nationwide campaign in partnership with law enforcement agencies across the state.

In ramping up its enforcement efforts, the department conducted two seat belt zones and had extra officers on patrol. A total of 97 citations were written.

“We worked really hard and stepped up to the challenge,” said Sergeant Roger Saran. “To us, if we saved one life, the campaign was worthwhile.”

The recent law enforcement crackdown was coordinated by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) as part of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.

Team will host its 4th Annual “Blazer Serve and Pass Clinic” for girls in third through eighth grades.

The camp will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Addison Trail.

Early-bird registration (deadline of Feb. 1) costs $20 a camper or $35 for two members of the same family. Onsite registration costs $30 a camper or $50 for two members of the same family. Participants will receive a Blazer Volleyball Camp T-shirt as part of the registration fee, and proceeds benefit the Addi-

tion from the Addison Trail Girls Volleyball coaching staff.

Participants will learn and improve on a variety of serving and passing skills and will receive a personalized serving and passing evaluation sheet to help guide future skill development.

Elmhurst College showcases artworks from area high schools 17th annual exhibit includes works from Addison Trail

ELMHURST — This month, Elmhurst College celebrates the work of young artists and public school art programs from across the Chicago area during the 17th Annual High School Art Exhibition. Among the high schools to be represented is Addison Trail in Addison.

Hundreds of paintings, prints, sculptures, videos and computer art, and works in other media will be on display during the two-week exhibition, on display now through January

19 in the Founder’s Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

“This is the 17th year of the Elmhurst College High School Art Exhibit,” said Suellen Rocca, director of exhibits for Elmhurst College. “It is truly a privilege each year to collaborate with the fine art educators in the high schools to create this exhibition.”

Besides Addison Trail, other high schools include East Leyden, Franklin Park; and West Leyden, Northlake; Lyons Township, Western Springs and LaGrange; Maine West, Des Plaines; Morton East, Cicero; Morton West, Berwyn; Proviso West, Hillside; Willowbrook, Villa Park; and York, Elmhurst.

For the member shows, each member can enter one piece not previously shown in the EAG gallery. Included in this show’s entries is a piece entitled “Jane on the Heath,” an oil on panel by local artist Susan Janssen, who uses brush as well as pal-

ette knife.

“The inspiration for this painting is Jane Eyre,” she said.

“I’ve always admired the character’s resilience. If she were a real person, I’d imagine she could look you square in the eye.”

Susan has taken studio art classes ever since graduating college. Her painting “Leaving the Borghese” is the cover art for Daniel Burns’ novel, Recalled to Life.

Most of the items entered into the show are for sale, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Guild and the Elmhurst Art Museum.

Operated by the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild, the EAG gallery features original contemporary artworks of its members.

Exhibits are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

College recognized for sustainability efforts ELMHURST — Elmhurst College’s gardens and food scrap composting program have won recognition from the National Wildlife Federation and the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition.

The National Wildlife Federation recently designated the College’s gardens a Certified Wildlife Habitat because they help wildlife thrive by

providing ample food, water, cover and a place to raise their young. The College’s many gardens, but specifically the recently-dedicated Monarch Butterfly Waystation, are designed to support pollinators and other wildlife.

In addition, the College has reduced chemical pesticide use across campus to encourage the survival of critical

wildlife populations.

The College also received a Gold Partner designation in the We Compost program, run by the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition, which reports Elmhurst has generated more than 21,000 pounds of food scrap compost just in this academic year so far—keeping more than 10 tons of waste out of landfills.

Addison Jan. 7 • Veronica Martinez-Granados, 38, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 400 block of W. North Ave. at around 8:32 p.m. and charged with theft. Police said Martinez-Granados took a cell phone that a victim left on the counter at a local restaurant.

• LaShell D. Robins, 33, of Addison, was arrested at a local store at around 6:17 a.m. and charged with theft.

Police said Robins was an employee at the store, and provided customers with receipts for merchandise at the register

Jan. 4 Ignacio Pacheco, 36, of Chicago, was arrested at around 9:45 a.m. Police said Pacheco had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department.

New year, new resolutions I

to make a resolute resolution to fix, firm and duct tape all the things in our lives that are chipped, chubby or otherwise crumbling and non-functional.

The task could be perceived as overwhelming – fixing all

the things that need fixing, because there is a lot that can be fixed. At least based on the view from my cracked window.

But I’ve always been energized by a good challenge and approach the changing of the calendar with the enthusiasm and vigor of Richard Simmons in a 80s workout video (but without the sequins).

I’m one of those annoying people who enjoys coming up with goals for self-improvement, personal growth and poundage loss. I type them up and put them in a folder aptly

named, “goals.” Each year at this time I take a peek to check my progress over the last twelve months.

And then I write new goals, which are often similar to the old goals that I never quite met the year before – or the year before that. I enjoy coming up with goals; I never claimed I had the aptitude for achieving them.

A lesser person might find this discouraging. Not me! I am optimistic about my goalsetting and maybe even someday goal-completing capabili-

ties. So what if I’ve been losing the same 10 pounds since the last century? At least I’m goaldriven and goal-oriented. That should count for something. I suppose it does, just not on the bathroom scale.

As with most things in life, my husband and I have differing opinions about resolutions.

I adopt them; he ignores them.

In his eyes, resolutions are a waste of time. He doesn’t need no stinking resolution to get the job done. It’s infuriating.

Addison Trail boys basketball team splits pair of games Blazers girls gymnastics team making progress

The Addison Trail boys basketball team split a pair of recent games with Fenton and Proviso East.

In a 68-39 non-conference win over Fenton, Addison Trail held its opponent to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.

Colten Noel led the Blazers with 14 points. Stevan Jones added nine points,while Jack Kalbas and Eric Grygo each had eight points. Kalbas had 2 three-pointers. Ryan Zygowicz, Grygo and Michael Williams each had six rebounds.

Nick Conrad had four assists, while Jones had five steals.

Noel blocked two shots.

In a 65-52 West Suburban

Conference Gold Division loss to Proviso East, after playing to a 13-13 first-quarter tie, Addison Trail was down 27-24 at halftime and 46-40 after three quarters.

Williams led the Blazers with 24 points on 8-for-11 shooting (6-for-7 from the freethrow line and 2-for-2 from the 3-point line). Grygo added 13 points, while Noel had six points. Grygo also had 10 rebounds, while Noel had six rebounds and Williams pulled in five rebounds. Kalbas had five assists, while Grygo and Williams each had two steals.

Grygo had two blocked shots.

Addison Trail was 8-5 overall through its first 13 games.

Grygo was leading the team in scoring at 11.0 points per game. Williams was averaging 7.4 points, while Kalbas was averaging 6.9 points and Noel was averaging 6.6 points.

Zygowicz was averaging 5.2 points. Grygo was the team’s leading rebounder at 7.5 per

game. Noel was averaging 4.8 rebounds and Williams was averaging 4.3 rebounds.

Kalbas was tops in assists with 35. Conrad had 33. Grygo had a team-high 19 steals, while Conrad had 15. Grygo also was tops in blocks with 13.

Kalbas was leading the team in 3-pointers made with 12.

Zygowicz had 11 threes. Zach Novak was the team’s top freethrow shooter at .727. Williams was second at .714.

Addison Trail girls bowling coach Steve Gilliam has seen progress both on the team and individual ends as the Blazers head into the home stretch of the season.

“We don’t have any wins, but we are improving,” said Gilliam. “The girls work hard.”

On the individual front, Molly Schmelter was ranked No. 8 in the West Suburban Conference in average through late last week with a 169.

“Molly has had some great finishes,” said Gilliam.

Schmelter finished in the top five in high game at the West Aurora tournament in late December with a 218.

“Molly is working on ironing some things out with her game,” said Gilliam.

“She is going to do very well (in the postseason). She has a great shot at it.”

Dinorah Cantu ranked 35th in the conference with a 140 average. Susana Silva, Kaitlin Martinez and Anaitza Roman also have contributed for the Blazers.

Gilliam noted the team has had several

individuals of late earn personal bests, including Laura Gamble’s 148 personalrecord high game.

“The girls are getting better,” said Gilliam. “We have girls on the JV team who are in there first year as bowlers.”

Team chemistry continues to be another rallying point for the Blazers. “It’s a really fun group,” said Gilliam. “They are fun to be around and they enjoy being around each other. They are fun and they want to do well. That’s great to see as a coach.”

Gilliam said wins and losses as a team are secondary right now. “We want to do our best and let the chips fall as they may,” he said. “We want to have fun, do our best and improve our games.”

Gilliam pointed out the Blazers are done no favors competing in the tough WSC. “A bright spot for us is we started with a 1,900 series as a team and now we are up to 2,200,” he said. “The problem is other teams in the conference are at 2,500, 2,600 and 2,700. These teams have very good bowlers. They don’t have just one, they have four or five. But we are getting better. The girls are striving for personal bests and are improving.”

Padera, who noted the team is strongest on floor and beam right now, lauded the recent efforts of Kennedy O’Neill.

“Kennedy was showing some true competitive power,” he said. “She injured her elbow on her beam dismount at the Tumbleland invite and hopefully will return to form soon.”

Padera is looking forward to seeing his team perform over the remainder of the season. “I am pleased with how we have improved so far and I hope to see us improve even further,” he said.

A recent six-game stretch was not kind to the Fenton boys basketball team.

The Bison dropped a Metro Suburban Conference West Division game to RiversideBrookfield and lost a non-conference game to Addison Trail.

Between those two games was a 1-3 showing at the Plano tournament.

At Plano, the Bison lost to Lisle, defeated Coal City, lost to Morris and lost to Indian Creek.

“The long and short of it is we got pretty banged up at Plano,” said Fenton coach Josh Payton.

Payton noted Fenton lost leading scorer Bryan Larsen to injury in the first game against Lisle. “Bryan Larsen has been our anchor and our best player,” he said. “He took a charge and got a split over his eye. He got stiches and had a concussion. Being without your No. 1 guy has been tough.”

Payton said Larsen was slated to return to practice last week after being sidelined since Dec. 23.

Fenton was slowed by another outside force at Plano—a leaky gym. “We ended up not playing Morris until 10 or 10:30

at night and then had to come back and play Indian Creek the next day at 12:15 p.m. We were back and forth to Plano twice in 13 or 14 hours. That’s the kids being on the bus a total of four hours, sleeping and then going back there. It didn’t’ help us.”

Despite the 1-5 skid dropping the club to 5-8 overall through mid-last week, Payton sees plenty of opportunities for improvement in the games ahead. “We want to come back strong and make a play in the conference,” he said. “There are still a lot of good prospects out there and some good opportunities for wins. We still have the bulk of our conference games left. There is plenty of time to cure some of these ills and make a push and be a good quality basketball team. We just have to go out there and pull it all together.”

Payton was pleased with numerous players who stepped up over the holidays. “We’ve been able to get some different guys a lot of minutes lately,” he said.

Nick Schaub had 15 points against Addison Trail. “Nick will develop into a nice player for us,” said Payton. “He stepped up his game and got some good minutes.”

Joe Andrews also has been active for the Bison. “Joe continues to help us,” said Payton.

Addison Trail brings Jesus Christ Superstar to the stage

T

he musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” might have originated as a 1970 rock opera, but Addison Trail is bringing the production to a new era when it presents the show from Jan. 21 to 23 as its winter musical.

“We are setting the story in the 1920s,” said Theatre Director Anna Jakubka. “The character of Jesus Christ will represent the poor faction of people; the character of Al Capone will represent King Herod; the police officers will represent Pontius Pilate and the Roman guards; and members of the mafia will represent the high priests.”

“Jesus Christ Superstar” tells the story of the last week of Jesus’ life, focusing on the relationships between the characters and their emotions, which motivate them toward certain actions. The story is told through the viewpoint of Judas Iscariot, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. Jakubka said this is her first time directing the show, and she’s thrilled at the opportunity.

Orchestra Director Dan O’Connell is particularly fond of the production, so the musical will honor his upcoming retirement at the end of the school year.

“The music in this production

is phenomenal,” Jakubka said.

“The pit never stops playing – the show just flows from one piece to the next.”

AT senior Michael Bellino will play Jesus Christ and said it has been a fun challenge to get into character.

“Everyone has a vision of who and what these characters are,” he said. “We’re telling a story many audience members are familiar with and portraying people they believe in.”

Junior Sevina Topalska, who will play Mary Magdalene, said the cast is really focusing on the story and character development.

“No matter what your religious beliefs, you will enjoy this show,” she said. “You can relate to the characters and their emotions and thoughts, regardless of your religious preference.”

The role of Judas Iscariot will be played by senior Cab Callaway, who said audience members are in for a surprise.

“Whether you know the story of Jesus or not, this musical will be very different from your expectations,” he said. “We’re excited to show the audience we can bring this caliber of music and production to a high school.”

does the dirty work and she does it because she knows it benefits the team. Georgia added an outside shot. She’s beating people in the post and then stepping out and making a couple 3s. That’s helped us. Sophie is doing everything we need her to do. She’s handling the ball and playing good defense. She works hard.

It’s very rare when she comes out.”

Anjella Farmer and Claire Gibler continue to be key offensive threats for the Knights.

Farmer is a senior, while Gibler is a sophomore. “Anjella and

(Of course he does.) I yearn to clean all the junk out of our lives. He yearns to clean the garage on Saturday afternoon. I plan for (and worry about) the future. He lives in the present. Together we make a complete human being.

However, I remain resolved – to convince him of the advantages of New Year’s resolutions.

It’s been a goal of mine for years. He’s yet to be persuaded.

This year when I asked him what his resolutions were he said, “Not to make any resolutions.”

When I heard his response, I gave a silent cheer. Because when you think about it resolving not to resolve could be considered a resolution in itself.

I’m choosing to label it as such and therefore have already met one of my goals for the year.

But don’t tell my husband I said so. He doesn’t believe in resolutions.

What better place to “wine” away those winter blues than at the annual Wine About Winter in Grand Haven Michigan?

Each January, a collection of businesses in Grand Haven’s Main Street district invite the public to sample wines and check out art from local artists.

As guests sip on samples of Shiraz and Chardonnay, area artists offer talks about their works, all of which are displayed at the various venues as part of Wine About Winter.

Tasting packages are $10 in advance of the event and include a commemorative wine glass and starter tasting tickets.

The trolley will be available to take you between all of the participating businesses from 6 - 9 p.m.

When the winter weather is at its worst, head down to Grand Haven’s Main Street and “wine” a bit. You’ll feel better!
