Illinois to enforce unemployment benefit registration requirement nois’ job seekers.

Jeff Mays, director of the Illinois Department of Employment Security, said the requirement isn’t new but the department is now enforcing it. “You won’t get a check and when you do file a resume you will get a check.”

Mays said the goal is to match job seekers with job openings. “States that have implemented these types of programs have actually walked

people to employment quicker and that is what we want to try to do.

“We’ve been planning for this for eight months, and we’ve been moving around our technology system to be able to handle the resume process and to start making the links between the folk that are registering for work with the employers that need workers,” Mays said.

Available resources for Illinois job seekers include free job-search

and postings, recruiting, job matches, hiring fairs, workshops, seminars and webinars. Individuals in search of employment will also have the advantage of having staff assist them in finding employment sooner.

Registering for the service involves uploading or creating a resume on the Illinois Job Link site.

Not everyone will be required to register for the service, however.

Individuals currently receiving benefits are exempt from the requirement.

Sixty percent of unemployment insurance claims currently filed with the department are not accompanied by a completed registration for employment services.

Individuals who register for employment services have access to more than 179,000 job postings on the state’s Job Link site.

The Addison Center for the Arts will present the District 4 Art exhibition Jan. 17 – Feb. 2, at its gallery located adjacent to Addison Trail High School at 213 No. Lombard Road, Door #4.

The “Young at Art” show is a compilation of artwork from eight different elementary schools in Addison. Each school selects approximately 25 works from students K-8, highlighting their talents learned throughout the year.

A special thank you to the elementary art teachers in Addison for showing the students different techniques and helping promote the creativity shown in the artwork. As Picasso once said,

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

The public is invited to celebrate these young artists at an artist’s reception on Wednesday, Jan. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. and during gallery hours through Feb. 2.

The gallery is open Wednesdays thru Saturdays from 1- 4 p.m.

On Dec. 30, the Elmhurst Police Department reported that a reporting officer had been notified of a possible altercation at the Schiller Parking Deck in downtown Elmhurst at

The officer made contact with Fernando Saucedo, 24, of Addison, who allegedly became belligerent and uncooperative. Police said Saucedo aggressively approached the officer while continuing to yell profanities.

DMMC launches new public affairs program Videos feature local mayors discussing policies affecting DuPage residents

The DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC) has launched a new public affairs program, Issues at Hand, focused on the issues affecting residents’ wallets and daily lives, DMMC President and Addison Mayor Richard Veenstra announced today.

The show, which will be available online and for use on public access television and social media channels, features local mayors explaining the impact of policy set in Springfield on local cities and villages.

“At DMMC, we’ve made it a top priority to keep our residents informed,” Veenstra said. “Issues at Hand provides a forum that moves beyond sound bites to address, discuss and explain the complex challenges and issues facing municipalities across DuPage County.”

Veenstra was appointed DMMC President earlier this year and pledged to unify DuPage municipalities on key issues and protect local tax dollars as the state attempts to regain its financial footing.

Under Veenstra’s leadership, a primary goal has been to educate constituents about legislative proposals – like a permanent property tax freeze – that might gain support from homeowners but have consequences and could end up costing taxpayers more in the long run.

In the first 15-minute episode of Issues at Hand, Veenstra, along with Mayors Steve Chirico of Naperville and David Brummel of Warrenville, discuss how property taxes factor

into their communities’ budget.

The mayors also explore the potential impact of a permanent property tax freeze on local governments, schools and overall quality of life Despite the fact that local municipalities receive a very small portion, approximately 10 percent, of the overall property tax bill, that money often represents the primary source of a town’s revenue. A permanent property tax freeze would reduce a municipality’s revenue even further, restrict its ability to access needed funds and jeopardize vital public services such as police and fire protection, garbage pick-up, road maintenance and snow removal.

The first episode of Issues at Hand and subsequent editions will be available on the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference YouTube channel. The top 10 athletes from Illinois

Illinois has produced many outstanding and game-changing athletes, so it’s a tough job to create any top 10 list.

The Illinois Press Association and Illinois Associated Press Media Editors enlisted longtime Chicago SunTimes sports reporter Mark Potash for the job. Here is his list of the top 10 athletes from Illinois.

1. Red Grange, Wheaton The early days of professional football were not pretty or promising—obviously not televised but also casually recognized. The Bears and Cardinals were relegated to secondary pages of the sports sections in Chicago, with college football dominant and even high school football more prominent.

And more than that, pro football was a second-class citizen in American sport—considered substandard to college football and to some, an unseemly, disrespected profession. The best college players didn’t automatically go to the National Football League.

Red Grange helped change all of that. The running back from Wheaton and the University of Illinois rivaled even Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey as an American sports star in the 1920s. When he signed with the Bears out of Illinois in 1925, he almost single-handedly changed the face of the NFL, giving it an instant credibility that was reflected in banner headlines and sell-out crowds.

Grange’s debut with the Bears on Thanksgiving Day drew 36,000 fans at Cubs Park—the largest crowd in the then-brief history of the future Wrigley Field. Ten days later, Grange drew a record 65,000 to the Polo Grounds for a game against Tim Mara’s fledgling New York Giants—an event that without exaggeration is credited with not only saving that franchise, but leaving an impression on Eastern sports writers that further legitimized pro football.

On a winter barnstorming tour following the season, Grange and the Bears drew a record 65,270 to the Los Angeles Coliseum.

As it turned out, Red Grange’s impact on the field would never match all of that. While playing for the New York Yankees in 1927 after a salary dispute with the

Bears, Grange suffered a knee injury and missed the 1928 season.

He returned to the Bears in 1929, but had lost the speed and agility that made him a superstar. He made his mark as an outstanding defensive back—most notably making a touchdown-saving tackle on the final play that clinched the Bears’ 23-21 victory over Giants in the NFL championship game. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

All things considered, no player from Illinois has had more impact on a sport than Red Grange. He was a four-sport star at Wheaton High School who scored 75 touchdowns. He became a superstar as a three-time All-American at Illinois who famously rose to the occasion of the big game when he scored four touchdowns in the first quarter against Michigan in 1924 at newly dedicated Memorial Stadium—a 95-yard return of the opening kickoff, plus runs of 67, 56 and 44 yards. In those days he was a larger-than-life star, his No. 77 was almost as famous as he was. And even then, the best was yet to come.

2. Dick Butkus, Chicago The greatest tribute to Dick Butkus’s fabulous NFL career is that as time passes and the linebacker position evolves arguably more than any in football—bigger, faster, greater athletes with triple-digit career sack numbers—his stature continues to grow.

The former Vocational High School and University of Illinois star still is No. 3 in most linebacker rankings. Some still say he’s there greatest linebacker to play the game. The Butkus Award is given to the best linebacker not only in college, but in high school and the NFL. Why? Because even with all-time greats such as Lawrence Taylor and Ray Lewis joining the best-of-alltime discussion, there always will only be one Dick Butkus. As the late Doug Buffone often said, “To play this game you have to have the Neanderthal gene—Butkus had two.”

But Butkus’ greatness lies deeper than that. It’s almost a shame that Butkus’ reputation as a mean, angry, dirty player overshadows the reality that he was one of the most instinctive, disciplined, fundamentally sound and opportunistic players ever.

He had a knack for being in the exact spot to make that brutal hit.

And he had great hands. It’s almost ironic that Butkus, despite his reputation, was one of the cleanest, surest tacklers of all-time.

He was named to the All-Pro team five times and the Pro Bowl eight times. In 119 NFL games, he had 22 interceptions and 27 fumble recoveries. And the ferocity with which he played was real. Buffone, who played next to Butkus for seven years, often recalled looking at a frothing Butkus on the field and thinking, “I’m glad he’s on my side.”

3. George Mikan, Joliet At 6-10, George Mikan was the first superstar of professional basketball — the first big-man who could run the floor and dominate at the rim on both ends. His impact forced three rules changes: goaltending, widening of the lane and the 24-second clock. When he played with the Minneapolis Lakers in 1949, the marquee at Madison Square Garden said it all: “GEO MIKAN V/S KNICKS.” An awkward, un-athletic prospect from Quigley Prep/Joliet Catholic, Mikan flourished under Ray Meyer’s tutelage at DePaul, becoming a three-time All-American and two-time Player of the Year in college. He won seven professional league championships, including one with the Chicago American Gears of the fledgling National Basketball League and six with the Lakers.

4. Isiah Thomas, Chicago The epitome of the head-strong, will-to-win Chicago point guard, Isiah Thomas parlayed his innate skills and determination into superstardom and championships.

A west side native, he took St. Joseph High School in Westchester from anonymity to second place in the Class AA state tournament in 1979. He led Indiana to the NCAA title in 1981 and was the spark plug on the Pistons’ back-to-back NBA titles in 1989 and 1990.

Thomas was a 12-time NBA allstar and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2000.

5. Jackie Joyner-Kersee, East St. Louis A basketball and track star at East St. Louis Lincoln and UCLA, Jackie Joyner-Kersee made her biggest mark in international track competitions, particularly the Olympics, where she won six medals in four different Olympics — including a silver medal in the heptathlon in 1984 in Los Angeles and gold in the heptathlon in 1988 in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona. She was named the greatest female athlete of all time by Sports Illustrated for Women in 1990.

6. Otto Graham, Waukegan The Big Ten Player of the Year at Northwestern—where he also played basketball and baseball— in 1943, Otto Graham became a prolific quarterback and one of the great leaders of pro football history. He won seven league titles with Paul Brown’s Cleveland Browns in the old All-American Football Conference (1946-49) and NFL (1950, 1954 and 1955) and three NFL Most Valuable Player awards (1951, 1953, 1955).

7. Ray Nitschke, Maywood A rough-and-tough, fierce competitor from Proviso High School, Ray Nitschke was a third-round draft pick by the Packers out of Illinois who was at the right place at the right time—becoming an intimidating force as the leader of the

great Packer defenses in the Vince Lombardi era.

Nitschke won five NFL championships with the Packers, including the first two Super Bowls. He was the MVP of the 1962 championship game.

8. Jimmy Connors, Belleville The “Brash Basher of Belleville,” as tennis guru Bud Collins called him, the East St. Louis native was a gritty, gutty, unconventional player and non-conformist who is credited with sparking a re-birth in American tennis in the early 1970s.

Jimmy Connors won eight Grand Slam titles, a record 109 singles titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world for 268 weeks, including a then-record 160 straight from 1974-77.

In 1974 at age 22, Connors went 99-4 and won 15 tournaments, including three Grand Slam events— the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon. He was barred from the French Open (the second leg) because of a contract with the World Team Tennis, costing him a chance to win the Grand Slam.

9. Lou Boudreau, Harvey A Hall of Fame shortstop with the Cleveland Indians, Lou Boudreau had one of the greatest baseball seasons of all-time as player/manager in 1948. He won the American League batting title (.355) and MVP award and led the Indians to the World Series championship—the only title the Indians have won since 1920. Exhibiting a great knack for leadership, Boudreau won a state title in basketball as a sophomore at Thornton and Big Ten titles as team captain in basketball and baseball at Illinois.

10. Bonnie Blair, Champaign Bonnie Blair won five gold medals at three different Olympic Games, capped by a dominating performance in 1994 at Lillehammer, when she won the 500-meters (by 0.36 seconds) and 1,000 meters (by a record-1.38 seconds) by wide margins. She was the first American to win an event (the 500-meters) in three consecutive Olympics. She won the Sullivan Award as the best amateur athlete in the U.S. in 1992.

Addison Trail wrestling team continues to improve Blazers put together recent string of six wins in seven meets

The Addison Trail wrestling team has proof of its recent improvement.

The Blazers recently put together a great stretch where they won six of seven dual meets.

The Blazers were 54-18 winners over District 88 neighbor Willowbrook in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division meeting. Addison Trail also downed York by a

51-20 count.

The only blemish during the span was a loss to Downers Grove South in WSC Gold action. Addison Trail then defeated Fenton 49-24, Elk Grove 56-18, Glenbrook South 75-6 and Leyden 68-10.

The wins put Addison Trail at 11-3 through late last week.

“We’ve been doing pretty decent,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Serio.

“The kids are wrestling tough. The team has been doing well as a whole.

For as young as we are we have the experience and we’re going out there and wrestling well. They have that experience in wrestling and they

Willowbrook boys basketball team goes 3-1 at Glenbard West tournament Schuemer, Myers named to alltournament team

The Willowbrook boys basketball team wrapped up the 2017 portion of its schedule by going 3-1 at the Glenbard West tournament.

The Warriors lost to host Glenbard West by two points in the championship game.

“Glenbard West has a pretty good team. They played well,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “We didn’t play well. They got out to a big lead, 14-3, on us. We cut into the lead and took the lead with about two or three minutes left. It was back and forth after that. We were playing catch-up most of the game.”

Willowbrook advanced to the tournament final with wins against Glenbard North, St. Francis and Hoffman Estates.

“Those all were double-digit wins,” said Perkins. “We were rolling defensively. Our full-court pressure and half-court traps helped us out a lot in those games. We were able to get a lot of transition baskets.

Our defense created transition opportunities for us.”

Perkins said a team effort paved the way on defense. “Our press is not necessarily one person,” he said.

“It depends on where the traps come from.”

Perkins did laud Sikander Zafar for his defensive efforts throughout the season. “Sikander probably is our best defender,” he said. “He’s at the top of the press and does a good job in the half-court trap. Everybody else loads up and gets in those pass-

ing lanes.”

Ethan Schuemer and Matt Myers were named to the all-tournament team at Glenbard West.

“Both of them have been consistent for us,” said Perkins. “Ethan is a workhorse. He played well in the tournament. He got into foul trouble against Glenbard West and that prevented him from playing a lot in the championship. He had four points.

Overall, he’s been rebounding, playing great and finishing for us. Matt is a consistent playmaker for us. He gets others involved and he’s done a good job rebounding.”

The loss to Glenbard West put Willowbrook at 9-2 overall.

“I’m pleased so far,” said Perkins.

“Our two losses have come at Proviso East by two points in overtime at the buzzer and the loss to Glenbard West in the championship game in their own gym. That’s two losses by two points each to respectable teams.

I’m pleased with the first 11 games, but we have a lot of games to go before the playoffs.”

Perkins noted between Jan. 6 and Jan. 30 the Warriors will play 12 games in that 24-day stretch.

“After those 12 games we will know a lot more about ourselves,” he said.

Willowbrook again will head to Sterling during the Martin Luther King weekend for a tournament where it will play four games in a three-day span with two games each on that Saturday and Monday.

“That tournament always is a grind,” said Perkins. “Hopefully we’ll have some momentum here at the end of the month and then the schedule eases. We won’t have as many games and that will give us time to practice and get ourselves ready for the playoffs.”

Xavier Sierra was 14-9 at 170 pounds. “Xavier is doing pretty well out there as well,” said Serio. “We have depth. The kids are doing a

great job, they really are.”

Addison Trail also had numerous high place-finishers at recent tournaments.

At the 20-team Glenbrook South tournament, Juarez took second at 106, while Matthews wrestled up at 132 pounds and took second as well.

Reyes went up a weight at 145 and took fifth place.

At Prospect in early December, Juarez placed third, while Matthews was third at 132 pounds again. Reyes took third as well and Sanabria was runner-up at 220 pounds.

Addison Trail’s only loss thus far in conference came to Downers Grove South. “That was a little disappointing,” said Serio. “Things didn’t fall for us. The kids wrestled

tough in every match. We were right there, but it didn’t end up our way. It was so close. Downers Grove South is a great team. Hats off to them, they wrestled a little better.”

Serio added another key aspect to this year’s team is its chemistry. “Our practices are not dull or boring,” he said. “They aren’t dreading to go to practice or just trying to make it through. They have a good time and they buy into what we are teaching them and they are improving. That is what makes a team good. They work hard, they want to be there and they are having so much fun, which is the most important thing.”

Fenton girls basketball team makes national record books Bison rain of 3 pointers gets notice; Benbow, Minard named all-tournament at Chicago Collins

The Fenton girls basketball team’s improvement this season under first-year coach Dave Mello now has been felt on a national level.

The Bison’s proclivity for the 3-point shot has put them in the pages of the National Federation of High Schools record book.

Fenton recently took 73 three-point shots in a win against Westmont, which ranks third all-time for a single game according to NFHS. The Bison also took 67 threes in a game against Chicago Solario, which gives them the fourth most in national girls high-school basketball history.

Through the end of 2017, Fenton was 6-9 overall and 2-4 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play.

In recent action, Fenton downed IC Catholic Prep 74-56 in a MSC Blue game. The Bison also beat the aforementioned Westmont 77-73, lost to Glenbard South 71-32 (in MSC Blue play) and then downed Chicago Solario 53-45, lost to Chicago Westinghouse 71-69 in overtime and defeated Chicago Roosevelt 77-20 at the Collins Academy tournament.

At the Collins, Fenton’s Amari Benbow and Jamie Minard were named to the all-tournament team.

Mello was pleased with how his team played in the Chicago Westinghouse loss. “We rallied from down 18-2 and 24-6 to take the lead late and then came up just short in overtime,” he pointed out.

Overall, Mello said the team has excelled in executing the game plan on a nightly basis. “We have really been running our system well,” he said. “When I watch the games on film, it is easy to see that the girls have really gained an understanding of what we want them doing.”

Mello noted Fenton has ramped things up partic-

ularly on the offensive end. “The offense really has been clicking,” he said. “During the past six games (through late last week) we are averaging just under 64 points a game. Last season, the girls averaged 32 points a game. Other than the game against Glenbard South, our system has been really effective.”

Mello would like to see further advancements defensively. “We always can be better on defense,” he said. “However, we were able to force Solario into 46 turnovers, which turned out to be huge in an eightpoint game.”

Fenton also has been hard at work on its free-throw shooting. “We really need to improve our free-throw shooting,” said Mello. “For some reason, the freethrow line has been a big struggle for us.”

Mello cited additional strong recent play from Jezalyn Tapia and Teagan Hausen. “Jezalyn has really stepped up at the wing position,” he said. “She is looking for her shot a lot more and her defense has really helped force a lot of turnovers. Teagan, our tallest girl, has started to take advantage of her height and get us rebounds on offense and she also causes lots of trouble at the top of our defense.”

Overall, Mello is thrilled with the team’s play heading into the start of 2018. “When considering the circumstances of the whole situation (Mello being hired during the start of the school year), I couldn’t be prouder of this team,” he said. “They have surpassed the win total from the last two seasons combined, have won two conference games after a 36-game conference losing streak, have conducted themselves as a first-class team and are fully responsible for laying the foundation of the culture we want with this program.

We also presented them with a system that none of them have ever even heard of, let alone played, and they have fully embraced it and are having a lot of fun and success running.”

Fenton played Walther Christian earlier this week and will face a busy stretch next week with games at Illiana Christian and Aurora Central Catholic sandwiched between a non-conference game against Plainfield Central. Fenton also has one game remaining against Chicago Collins in the Collins Academy tournament.

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team has momentum on its side heading into the new year.

The Knights closed out 2017 by winning the IC Catholic Prep-Westmont tournament with a 4-0 record.

“We did a really nice job of putting a streak together and getting the championship,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell.

The Trojans started the tournament with a victory against Elmwood Park. “We dominated the game from start to finish,” said Tyrrell. “We got up by 30 points and tournament rules say when a team is up by 30 we play with a running clock the rest of the game. We played a lot of guys. It was a fun way and a good way to start out.”

IC Catholic Prep then encountered a Chicago Latin School team that came into the tournament with two losses. “We went up against a very good Chicago Latin team,” said Tyrrell. “They had bigger size than we did. We knew it would be close so we had to make sure that we got back on defense, boxed out and crashed the boards. It was a battle.”

Tyrrell noted Khali Saunders was a key factor in the win against Latin and in other tournament games.

“Khali had a very nice tournament.

He had three double-doubles for us and was a key reason why we won

They are an extremely athletic team. We let our defense dictate that game. We limited them in all facets. We packed it in with our man-to-man defense and took away what they do well, which is dribble-penetration.”

That led IC Catholic Prep into the championship game against Montini. “We know Montini from the old Suburban Christian Conference and the Suburban Catholic Conference. It was fun to play them,” said Tyrrell.

“Montini is having an excellent year.

They had two losses going into the game. They have size and athleticism and good outside shooting. It was a great test for us at this point.”

Tyrrell said his team again played well on the defensive end in the final.

“We did an excellent job of taking charges,” he said. “Alex Meurer had two charges in the game. One was at a pivotal point in the game. He beat his man on the left side and got a layup and then on the other end got a charge. That’s two big possessions for us. Alex has done an excellent job this season. He handles the ball very well and is an excellent shooter. He
