Woman carjacked at Oakbrook Center DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger announced last week that bond has been set for a Florida man Anthony Riola accused of robbing a woman of her car from the Oakbrook Shopping Center.

Anthony Riola, 39, of Florida, appeared at a bond hearing, where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $500,000 with 10% to apply. In all, Riola has been charged with one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking (Class X Felony), one count of Armed Violence (Class X Felony), one count of Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Theft Over $10,000 (Class 2 Felony.)

It is alleged that at 11:50 a.m., December 29, 2018, Riola approached a woman seated in her car in the Oakbrook Center parking lot.

It is alleged that Riola told the woman, “Give me your car,” and that he told her he had a knife and then brandished the weapon. According to Berlin’s report, Riola entered the vehicle after the woman fled but was unable to start the vehicle as he did not have the keys. Riola then left that vehicle and approached a valet parking attendant and entered a running vehicle and drove away, while the valet attendant and owner of the

vehicle stood nearby.

An investigation by the Oak Brook Police Department led to Riola who was apprehended in Chicago later than day.

“My office will do everything within our power to ensure that DuPage County residents will not have to worry about their personal safety while out shopping, dining or

otherwise enjoying themselves … ,” Berlin said.

Riola’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 28, 2019, for arraignment in front of Judge

George Bakalis.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

‘A Walk Through My Mind’ Artwork of Gregory Albin Stall comes to Guild Gallery

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) will host A Walk Through My Mind, featuring original paintings, drawings and sculpture by EAG member Gregory Albin Stall. It Gregory Albin will take place in Stall the EAG Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave. It opened Sunday, Jan. 6 and will remain through Friday, Feb. 1. The public is invited to a family-friendly reception on Friday, Jan. 11 from 7-9 p.m. to meet the artist.

County briefs Foundation’s Ball raises almost $450,000 The DuPage Foundation’s Imagination Ball was held on Saturday, Nov. 17 and was attended by more than 250 people. The Imagination Ball has already grossed more than $435,000 to date and contributions still continue.

The Foundation secured $77,000 in commitments toward its NGI Community Innovation Matching Grant Challenge and Paddle Raise that will benefit its Next Generation Initiative (NGI) as well as three grantees. The organizations, Little Friends, NAMI DuPage, and Teen Parent Connection, each received $12,500.

Board of Health updates executive committee The DuPage County Board of Health recently voted to fill two Executive Committee positions due to the recent loss of two longtime members.

The position of president was left vacant with the passing of Linda A. Kurzawa in October, who led the Board of Health for nearly two decades.

Board secretary Scott Cross, who served on the Board of Health since 1999, recently relocated to another state, leaving his seat open.

“Linda and Scott served the residents of DuPage County passionately for many years and will be sorely missed,” said incoming President Sam Tornatore, J.D. In addition to Tornatore, the Executive Committee now includes Vice President Lanny Wilson, M.D. and Secretary Robert S. Spadoni, J.D., FACHE.

A 28-year-old Carol Stream man was charged with domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic battery at around 3:20 p.m. Police said the suspect held the victim to the ground and struck the victim in the face. Additionally, the suspect allegedly restrained the victim so the victim could not contact police.

McDaniel, 34, of Chicago, was stopped for an expired registration plate, was found to be driving without a valid driver’s license, and having a failure to appear warrant out of Will County. alleged that Fowlkes told the woman, “I haven’t seen you in the area, you’re pretty,” and when the woman told Fowlkes she was pregnant, he said, “I can help you with your kid,” and rubbed her stomach. When the victim attempted to leave, Fowlkes rubbed the woman’s thigh and genitals, grabbed her by her wrist and pulled her back towards him. The victim was eventually able to free herself from Fowlkes and contact Westmont Police. Officers located Fowlkes at a nearby restaurant shortly thereafter.

“My office has no tolerance whatsoever for the type of actions Mr.

Fowlkes has been charged with,” Berlin said. “We will do everything within our power to ensure that no one is subjected to the kind of violent and aggressive behavior alleged in this case.”

Fowlkes’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 1, for arraignment in front of Judge MacKay. The DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee is accepting grant proposals for projects aimed at improving the quality of the County’s waterbodies.

In its 20th year, the Water Quality Improvement Program (WQIP) grant awards funding for projects exhibiting a regional water quality benefit, including restoration and green infrastructure projects.

“This is such a successful program because we’re leveraging outside funds – from federal, state and local sources – for projects that provide countywide benefits,” said County Stormwater Management Committee Chair Jim Zay. “Last year alone, we received applications for projects totaling nearly $6 million.”

Under the program, organizations and individuals may apply for reimbursement of up to 25 percent of construction costs for portions of

projects that improve water quality.

During the grant’s tenure, DuPage County has awarded more than $3.3 million to 56 projects such as permeable paver parking lots, green roofs and native vegetation.

“The amount of projects this program has assisted in is becoming increasingly noticeable in our local communities,” added Zay. “Not only do they look great, but they’re improving the health of local ecosystems and reducing localized flooding.”

This year, DuPage County also updated the WQIP grant webpage to include past projects and common water quality practices, as well as guidance on applying for the WQIP grant. The application deadline is Jan 11.

Troop 82 Eagle Scout Project benefits local library

Troop 82 Boy Scout Jake Downey and Elmhurst Public Library worked in partnership to create a series of Adventure Backpacks that can be borrowed by Library cardholders. Jake, along with a crew of friends who volunteered, spent several months and over 120 hours to complete this project for the Library as part of Jake’s Eagle Scout service project. The backpacks contain activities, games, books, tools, and other resource information for each of the following six themes: Animals, Aquatics, History, Geocaching, Plants, and Rocks & Minerals. Jake and his helpers spent many hours brainstorming, researching the themes, researching the backpack contents, and creating tutorial videos to assist with how to use the backpacks.

Each theme has two backpacks, which will be available for Library cardholders to borrow. Jake gave a preview of the Adventure Backpacks at Elmhurst Public Library’s recent X-STREAM Fest on Oct. 20. The Library will get the Adventure Backpacks cataloged and ready for their grand debut in the spring.

Give yourself a gift of the here and now

We are all living just ten years away from a world we can hardly imagine.

I’m not talking about technology, global warming or advances in medical science. I’m talking in the personal sense. For most of us, our lives will be completely different ten years from now. Just like they were probably completely different ten years ago.

Think about it.

Where were you 10 years ago?

What were you doing? What thoughts occupied your time? What did your days look like?

I was changing diapers and probably pregnant, but that’s just me. I’m happy to report that all my kids are now potty trained and I am no longer preoccupied with my due date. Some changes are for the better.

Ten years before that, I didn’t yet know the rigors of parenthood firsthand, and was probably living what I now would consider a fairly self-centered life. This means I got to eat when I wanted, sleep when I wanted and watch what I wanted on TV. These days, I’m in what I call the ‘taxi season’ of life. I spend a lot of my time driving other people around.

Most of them are the people I gave birth to. They’ve since grown into kids who need rides to school, practice, games and lessons.

Ten years from now, they’ll have their own driver’s licenses and won’t need my taxi services anymore. Some of them will probably be living in houses of their own. My son’s voices will have changed, and they’ll probably all be taller than me.

Ten years beyond that they may be driving me around, but I’m not ready to go there just yet – even in my imagination. Going too far into the future feels uncomfortable and unsure.

There are just too many what ifs.

So, for the most part, we live in the moment. Of course we have to think long-term when it comes to things like life insurance and retirement plans, but otherwise, our minds stay firmly planted in the here and now. When you are pushing a baby stroller or changing a diaper, it’s hard to imagine that the day will come when the baby will walk and take care of his poop all by himself, let alone a day when that same baby may be pushing you.

Still, nothing in life is permanent.

Day-by-day, sometimes hour-byhour, things change and evolve. The kids learn to feed themselves Cheer-

ios. Pretty soon they are pressing the buttons on the microwave and before you know it they can cook a pretty mean frozen pizza. Some of them never learn to flush the toilet, but never mind the minor details.

As the years progress, we simply carry on. We start life out by being carried. We grow older and independent, carrying a tune as we drive around town in our first car. We carry a large backpack in college. After college graduation and marriage (if everything goes in order) we find ourselves carrying a baby or two. Our babies grow and we carry their hockey or dance equipment. They grow some more and we might have to carry a balance on their college tuition. Finally life comes full circle and we get to carry our grandbabies.

Most of us don’t think about the big picture like that. I know I don’t. I’m much more likely to focus on current events: The bills I need to pay, the upcoming choir concert, returning a phone call from a friend and the fact that we’re out of milk again. Heck, I find it hard to focus on more than just one day on the calendar sometimes.

That’s taking life in the here and now to the extreme.

I heard a saying once that went something like this: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why they call it the present.”

Those are probably pretty good words to live by. Staying in the moment keeps us grounded. It allows us the luxury of feeling like now will last forever. That, truly, is a gift.

Pretty simple, really, but most of the more profound things in life usually are.

New year is a time for reflection, hope for future As I print out the final newsletter I sent in 2018 and put it in the binder for year, I am awash in emotion. I have been sending a weekly “joy letter” since September 2008.

Ten years. (I have been writing this newspaper column even longer, since May 2001.)

So much life has transpired in these last ten years. Gratitude overflows my cup (and leaks out my eyes.)

When I first started writing my email newsletter, it was a follow-up to a joy workshop I had done. I had more to say. I wanted my people to stay in tune with what they had discovered about themselves and their own joy journey.

The newsletter now goes out to thousands of people across the land.

And I write it for me.

times it’s easier, sometimes it’s not.

Sometimes it’s a baby step, sometimes it a flying jump. Every time, it’s worth it.

The new year is upon us. Time for introspection and reflection.

Time for attention and intention.

Time for action.

That is the kicker.

We (me included) often ponder our possibilities and never move toward what we want. We see it, feel it, maybe even believe it’s possible, and we stay swirling in the comfortable familiarity.

What I have learned over and over is that the new normal is fantastic. Any action is good. It gets me in momentum.

When I relax and trust and be me, shaky and confident at the same time, things work out. Better than I imagine. New opportunities and invites fall from the sky. Things fall into place.

The secret to living an incredible life is first to believe it’s possible.

Second, take one action, large or

small (or teeny tiny) toward what you desire. Sometimes for me that is as simple as buying a new domain name. It could be a new haircut. A new pair of shoes. Something outwardly symbolic and empowering for you.

It could be saying no to an obligation that no longer brings you joy. It could be saying yes to something that excites you, even if it feels a wee bit scary to venture in.

Take a few minutes for some quiet time with yourself. What would you like more of this year? What would you like less of? What can you do to make that happen?

My ceaseless motto, one I need to inhale every day: Do more of what makes you happy.

So simple. Yet we do not always heed.

Let us see the new as an adventure. One to enjoy, to savor. To explore and discover. To love and let be.

That is my wish for you and me.

Join me, will you? Keep me up to date on your leaps and baby steps.

Let us encourage one another to do more of what makes us happy. That is how we can change the world.

Later voted to end government shutdown

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi was sworn into the 116th Congress on Thursday, Jan. 3 by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to serve his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“It was an honor to take the oath of office this afternoon to kick off the 116th Congress, and to begin my second term serving the people of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District,” he said. “After a successful first term, during which I led the historic modernization of our national Career and Technical Education (CTE) system, I am thrilled to continue pushing bold and innovative policies to strengthen our economy by expanding opportunities for students, small businesses, and working families.”

Then Krishnamoorthi called on Congress to work to solve the issue of the government shutdown.

“Today, as my colleagues and I took the oath of office, we were keenly aware of our immediate and pressing responsibility as Members of Congress – to reopen the government,” he said. “Later today, I will vote to end the destructive government shutdown for the sake our citizens and the health of our economy. I am hopeful this legislation will pass the Senate as well as the House and will be signed into law by President Trump.”

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team competitive during holiday road trip Coach James looking for even more progress in second half of season

The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team packed its bags and headed to the Bloomington-Normal area for the holidays.

The Knights went 1-3 in the smallschool girls’ portion of the well-regarded State Farm Holiday Classic.

“We went 1-3, but we were competitive in every game,” said Knights coach Kelsey James. “The first game against Rochester we lost by 11 and that was the most we lost by. A couple of our younger girls really stepped up. Our girls showed up to play every game wanting to compete and wanting to win. We’re looking forward to turning the page this year.”

James has seen improvements on both sides of the ball. “I would say our offense is looking better,” she said. “It’s not as consistent as it needs to be, but when we run our offense we can score almost every time. We’ve had a couple of games where we have scored more than 50 points. Our defense still needs some improvement. We did hold one team to 30 points and one to 32 points. Our on-ball defense has gotten better, but our team defense needs some work still.”

Sophomore Alia Johnson continues to excel of late for the Knights.

“Alia is playing very well,” said James. “She’s finishing every game in double figures. Against Rockford Lutheran in the tournament she had a double-double in the first half and finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds.”

Addison Trail girls basketball team wins two games at Lisle Blazers return to conference play this week

The Addison Trail girls basketball team came away with a pair of wins at the recent Lisle Christmas tournament.

The Blazers finished out the event with a 15-point win against Aurora Rosary. Addison Trail opened the tournament with a triumph against Elgin St. Edward and then lost the middle two games to Reed-Custer

(by 4 points) and St. Francis (by a single bucket).

Addison Trail defeated St. Edward 50-49, lost to Reed-Custer 42-38, lost to St. Francis 49-47 and defeated Rosary 41-26.

“We played really well,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader. “Reed-Custer was a huge team.

They were really big and we were neck and neck with them. They sat in a 1-3-1 zone. It was tough. We don’t see that a lot.”

Addison Trail downed Glenbard East the Saturday before Christmas in a non-conference game.

“We went 3-2 in those five games,” Schader pointed out. “We are play-

ing better basketball than we were the first quarter of the season. The five or seven games before that we would get down big by like seven, 10 or 14 points and then have to battle back. We didn’t have enough in the tank. We have played pretty solid here these last five games.”

Schader said defense has been a bright spot of late. “Our defense is really solid,” he said. “We’re keeping teams to around 38 or 40 points a game.”

The coach also is seeing progress at the other end of the floor.

“We handle the ball pretty well and we’re starting to score more,” he said. “We have been working on

our shooting in practice and that is becoming pretty solid.”

On the individual front, Schader had high praise for the likes of Serena Gilliam, Quiana Birmingham, Angelina Carreras, Karime Martinez and Mia Johnson of late. Birmingham is a freshman.

“Serena and Quiana are playing well,” Schader stated. “Angelina is starting to score more for us. She’s at seven or eight points a game.

Karime does a lot of other things for us. Mia Johnson is a sophomore who is starting to play better. She’s very athletic. She’s a two-sport athlete (also plays volleyball) who can jump a ton. I wouldn’t be surprised

if she plays both sports in college at a smaller school. “ After Lisle, Addison Trail sat at 7-10 overall and 2-5 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

“Our conference is pretty solid,” said Schader, “but we definitely see some winnable games coming up. We have Downers Grove South (earlier this week) coming up and that was our worst game of the year by far the first time we played them. It will be interesting to play them again.”

The Blazers face Hinsdale South in another conference game Saturday night in Darien.

Willowbrook girls basketball team continues strong play Warriors go 3-1 at Wheaton North; Defeat conference tri-leader Downers Grove South

The Willowbrook girls basketball team’s lone conference loss thus far came at home at the hands of Downers Grove South in a game where the Warriors led by double digits late in the game.

Heading into the new year, the Warriors sat in a three-way tie atop the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with Downers South and Proviso East. Willowbrook defeated Proviso East in Maywood earlier in the season.

However, the recent rematch with

Downers South was a completely different story. The Warriors were 50-45 come-from-behind winners in Downers Grove.

Willowbrook trailed 13-7 after the first quarter and 29-19 at halftime.

Fenton girls basketball team records three wins Bison already have more than tripled last season’s win total

Things continue to trend upward for the Fenton girls basketball team.

The Bison recorded recent Metro Suburban Conference Red Division wins against Guerin Prep and Wheaton Academy. Fenton downed Guerin 68-25 and edged Wheaton Academy by two hoops, 48-44.

Fenton took part in the DePaul Prep tournament in Chicago. The Bison defeated Northside Prep 71-33, lost to Chicago Brooks 61-44, lost to DePaul Prep 73-55 and lost to Chicago Lincoln Park 65-55.

Fenton had a 10-9 overall mark and was 5-3 in MSC Red Division play after the DePaul Prep tournament.

At DePaul, Alexus Arzola was named to the all-tournament team.

“Alexus had a very good tournament and was rewarded with the all-tournament selection,” noted Fenton coach Dave Mello. “She was a force on offense and defense.”

In recent times, Mello has been pleased with the team’s improvement in the rebounding department.

“We have been doing a really good job crashing the offensive glass,” he said. “We always have gotten a good amount of offensive rebounds due to our style of play, but we have made a

concerted effort to get even more in recent games.”

Mello continues to see movement forward with the team’s offensive system. “The pace with which the offense has been going has been really good,” he said. “However, we did have a four-game stretch where we struggled to knock down the 3-point shot. Teams are doing a good job of challenging our shooters.”

Mello noted during that four-game span, Fenton made 26 three-pointers. “That followed a four-game stretch where we made 56 threes,” he explained. “The good news is we have made 14 in each of the last two games, so our shooting has come back.”

Mello has been impressed with the team’s high level of energy on defense of late. “In our loss to Lincoln Park we were able to still force 49 turnovers,” he said. “We are still able to get most teams to play much faster than they would like.”

Mello has two points of emphasis moving forward in the short-term.

“We still can get better at taking care of the basketball and shooting free throws,” he said. “We have been turning the ball over a little too much lately. A lot of the turnovers have been careless mistakes. Also, our free-throw shooting has really been down this season.”

Fenton has received a bump from freshmen Hailey Miller and Sophia Haska in recent games. “Hailey and Sophia have taken huge steps for-

ward,” said Mello. “Hailey is one of our primary ball handlers and is really improving her decision-making. She also is being a lot more aggressive attacking the basket and has become a consistent 3-point shooter.

She also is one of our lockdown defenders.

“Sophia has really expanded her game. She came in as someone who played most of her junior-high seasons under the basket. Now, she is not only playing down low, but also is stepping out and shooting and making 3s. On defense, she finds herself playing at the point of our pressure or as the safety. We also are looking to give her some ball-handling responsibilities.”

Overall, Mello continues to see his program make large strides. “This team of girls has really impressed us so far considering the varsity was coming off back-to-back threewin seasons just two years ago and now they not only have 10 wins to go with a 5-3 conference record, but they have faced off with some of the tougher teams Fenton has played in recent years and they always compete,” he said. “We are very excited about the second half of the season, but know we must take our game to a higher level in order to be successful.”

Fenton heads to Norridge tonight to face Ridgewood in a conference game and will travel to Elk Grove Saturday for a non-conference contest.

Stephanie Dasbach led the Warriors with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end.

Kaitlyn McCann added 10 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers.

Annemarie Knudtson added eight points and five steals and made a pair of 3s. Grace Tumilty had six points, six rebounds and three assists, while Cecilia Lizasuain had six points as well.

Prior to Downers South, Willowbrook dropped a 64-49 non-conference game to Plainfield South.

Those two games followed a strong 3-1 showing at the Wheaton North Falcon Classic tournament over the holidays.

“We are moving right along,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell.

“We went 3-1 and lost a squeaker by six points to eventual champion Glenbrook South.”

Wilowbrook kicked off the tournament with a win against Elgin and then lost to Glenbrook South before coming back to down West Aurora and then Schaumburg to take fifth place in the tournament.

“We played well,” said Harrell. “We didn’t shoot great, but we played really good defense most of the tournament.”

Willowbrook trailed Glenbrook South by 18 points at halftime and then came out in the second half and held it to 10 points in the third and fourth quarters combined.

“And most of those points came in the last minute of the fourth quarter,” said Harrell. “We cut it (down to) two points and then we commit-

ted a turnover with 15 seconds left.

We played excellent defense in that game and put ourselves in a position to potentially win the game. I was happy with the girls’ performance in the tournament. We had some girls step up and score who don’t necessarily always score a lot for us.”

McCann averaged 17 points a game in the tournament and earned all-tournament accolades.

Harrell also had high praise for Tumilty and Dasbach. “Grace averaged 10 points and four assists in the tournament,” he noted. “She also shot 85 percent from the free-throw line, which is really big for us. Stephanie averaged five blocks per game, which is huge. That helps our defense a lot when you have someone protecting the rim like that.”

Harrell lauded the efforts of Maura Heneghan off the bench, who hit two 3-pointers in the Glenbrook South game. “She helped us get back into the game,” said Harrell.

Harrell added that Maureen Schmid also has been playing well lately. “Maureen has been hot lately and continued that in the tournament.

She averaged two 3-pointers,” he said. “All in all, a lot of girls played well for us.”

With the 4-2 mark over the holidays and the first week of the new year, Willowbrook was sitting at 15-6 overall and 6-1 in WSC Gold action.

“The Downers Grove South game will be big for us,” said Harrell late last week. “We lost to them by 10 points at home and led by 13 points in the fourth quarter.”

Harrell has high hopes for the home stretch of the season. “We are getting better and that’s nice to see,” he said. “There isn’t much rest to be had this season. We have three games next week and three the following week. The girls have been playing extremely well.”

Fenton’s domination in the Metro Suburban Conference continues.

The Bison recently racked up MSC wins against Riverside-Brookfield and IC Catholic Prep to run its conference winning streak to 46 matches in a row.

Fenton defeated Riverside-Brookfield 45-30 and upended IC Catholic Prep 61-12.

In those two MSC contests, junior

Kevin Guevara had a fall and a major decision at 160 pounds. Junior Danny Ramirez recorded two technical falls at 152 pounds.

In the R-B match, senior Ramiro Bracamontes (170 pounds), junior Ricky Saucedo (220 pounds) and sophomore David Burch (145 pounds) earned pinfall victories.

Filip Reduta, Abraham Otero and Jeremy Piskorz also had wins for the Bison.

Shorthanded Fenton also recently split a triangular meet with Johnsburg and Bartlett. Fenton downed Johns-

burg 60-18 and lost 42-41 to Bartlett, an Upstate Eight Conference member (Fenton joins the UEC next season).

Ramirez and Bracamontes each had two falls in the triangular. Other winners in the Johnsburg contest included senior Brandon Lopez at 182 pounds, Saucedo and sophomore Tyler Macias at 120 pounds.

Fenton was 8-4 overall and 4-0 in MSC action through the holiday break.

While the IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team went 1-3 during its own IC Catholic Prep-Westmont tournament over the holidays, coach TJ Tyrrell is far from hitting the panic button with his younger crew.

“We were a little out of sync and made some mental mistakes, but our kids played hard,” he said. “Our kids are making progress. Sometimes losses teach more than wins. With the losses you tend to reflect a little more and put more pressure on yourself. We’ve been able to dig into some films and talk to the guys and help them learn, grow and improve.

We don’t want to use it as an excuse anymore, but we’re a young group.

That can only last so long. Our goal is to get the guys playing their best basketball in February. With this tournament, we did not come out with the reward we wanted, but we saw a lot of areas where we can improve and we will improve.”

The Knights were 7-6 overall after the tournament.

“All the teams we played in the tournament brought pressure,” said Tyrrell. “That gave us some experience that you can’t replicate in practice. We saw some very athletic teams. The two Chicago Perspective schools and Chicago Legal Prep are all Chicago charter schools and they were athletic. We don’t usually see that, but we were able to see improvement in each game where we were breaking their pressure.”

Tyrrell noted IC Catholic Prep lost by three points to Elmwood Park, one point to Perspectives MSA and by 10 to Perspectives Leadership.

The Knights defeated Chicago Legal Prep by seven points.

Notable individual performances included Zach Jordan hitting for 22 points (5 three-pointers) in the Elmwood Park game. Dom Gaudio turned in a 15-point, three-assist effort, while Chauncey Lee had 14 points, six assists and seven rebounds. Ryan Wojtalewicz had nine points and six rebounds. “That’s three juniors and a sophomore there that contributed to our point totals,”

Tyrrell noted the team had 22 turnovers against Perspectives MSA. “And we lost by one point,” he said.

“We have to look at the decisions we made in that game and any one or two corrections could have been the difference. We need to cut down on turnovers.”

In that contest, Lee had 15 points.

Mike Carpanzano had 12 points, Jordan had 10 points and Wojtalewicz had five points and eight rebounds.

In the Legal Prep game, Jordan had 23 points and five rebounds, while Lee had nine points and three assists.

Johnny Falduto, a sophomore, had nine points and four assists. “We did a better job cutting down our turnovers with 14 and we shot 50 percent from the 3-point line, which is very good,” said Tyrrell.

In the Perspectives Leadership game, Wojtalewicz had 18 points.

Jordan had 14 points, while Lee had 10 points and a team season-high nine assists. Sophomore Justin Hall had eight points and nine rebounds.

“Chauncey’s nine assists were the high on this team over the last two years, at least,” said Tyrrell.

Tyrrell said fixing a few issues here and there will help his squad in the second half of the season. “We told the kids if we had a couple better possessions and executed when we needed to, it would have been a different story in the tournament,” he said. “It hurts to lose those games, but after processing the losses and digging into the film, there sure is a lot to be optimistic about. We feel like we are in a good place with our team development.”

The coach also was impressed with Lee’s efforts in the tournament.

“Chauncey Lee is coming off that nine-assist game. We told him in film that it was a great job to have a nine-assist game, but we think he can get even more,” he said. “That’s what is exciting for him to where he can create even more and make the guys around him even better and it shows his development as a leader.”

Wojtalewicz continues to excel around the rim and as a leader. “We call him Big Woj,” said Tyrrell. “He’s a great leader for us. He’s vocal and is a hard-worker. He hustles. He’s a great kid to coach.”

Tyrrell added IC Catholic Prep has been bolstered by the play of sophomores Falduto and Hall. “Both are football players who are working their way into the lineup and have taken advantage of the minutes they have been given,” the coach remarked. “They are two of the hardest workers on the court. Justin is under 5-10 and had nine rebounds off the bench in a game to lead the team. He puts in a lot of effort.”

The squad’s two lone seniors, Carpanzano and Ryan Asmussen, also have excelled in the leadership department.

“Their leadership has been very good,” said Tyrrell. “Ryan and Mike have done a good job mentoring the younger guys and taking them off to the side in practice and helping them understand concepts or plays. They have helped create a very good culture.”

IC Catholic Prep returned to action after the break and dropped a tough 44-43 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest against Aurora Central Catholic.

ACC led 12-6 after the first quarter and 27-20 at halftime. The Knights trimmed the lead to 35-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

Wojtalewicz led the Knights with 13 points. Gaudio had 11 points (two 3-pointers), while Lee had nine points.
