Twin Lakes, Wisconsin

The Village of Twin Lakes is located in the Southeastern corner of Wisconsin in Kenosha County. Currently, Twin Lakes has a full-time population of 6,429 and another one-third more of part-time residents.

Twin Lakes offers that small-town charm less than 70 miles from Chicago, Milwaukee and Kenosha. Its location offers quick, easy access to two international airports and interstate transportation. In Twin Lakes we have a saying: “close to everything, but away from it all.”

With nearly 1,000 acres of water the Twin Lakes, Mary and Elizabeth, make the area a popular destination offering swimming, boating, and fishing. Five major and several smaller parks offer beaches, basketball, tennis & volleyball courts, skateboarding, walking trails, baseball diamonds, soccer/football field, sledding hills and pickleball.

The Twin Lakes Chamber Office is located in the red railroad depot replica next to the Caboose at 349 E. Main St. in downtown Twin Lakes.

The railroad design pays homage to the history of the area. Large blocks of ice were harvested from the lakes and shipped via railroad to Chicago during the summer, before refrigeration became commonplace. The Chamber building was ready for use in June of 1998. The arrival, in June of 1999, of the Chicago Northwestern Caboose TL-699 was arranged for by resident and Chamber member Bill Porps.

The Twin Lakes Area Chamber and Business Association proudly hosts several community events each year.

The second annual WinterFest on Feb. 11 (weather permitting) will include fun family activities and food. Details TBD.

Bring Dad to our third annual Rock the Lake event June 17 to celebrate Father’s Day as we kick off the summer season.

The Libertyfest parade will be Saturday, July 1, at 11 a.m. Fireworks will be at dusk at Lance Park on Saturday, following an Aquanut

Water Ski Show.

The parade starts at St. John’s Church parking lot and ends at Lance Park. Want to be in the parade? Businesses, groups and citizens can be in the parade. Contact the Chamber for information.

Get out on the links Sept. 3 for the annual Chamber Golf Outing. Enjoy a day of golf, have lunch, compete for prizes, then end the evening with the Ball Toss and a great dinner.

A word from the Chamber president

2023 is upon us, and there is so much to look forward to in the upcoming year! Events, festivals, parades, and more are going to be coming up before you can say “cotton candy.”

The Twin Lakes Area Chamber & Business Association welcomes you to our area in western Kenosha County. We offer year-round fun and activities to do, from skiing on snow or water, golfing at our local links, enjoying a giant party at CornFest or Country Thunder, or taking in a sunset from one of our many lakes.

As a fifth-generation resident of the area, I remember stories from my parents and grandparents about all the fun things they have done over the years, and I am glad to help carry on that tradition with my role as the president of the Chamber.

From the Fox River, which offers a great water trail from north to south in the county, to our local businesses that offer many unique experiences and places that will soon become

your favorite, the west end of the county has lots to keep you and your family busy.

Working as an independent organization, the Chamber, with the support of its local business membership, cooperates with nearby municipalities. We strive to show the world what a great location this is, with a rich history. With the help of our local schools, businesses, and other civic organizations, we involve everyone in what makes our area so wonderful.

We also work with our local schools and other civic organizations to help us with the events and involve everyone in the area with what makes our area so wonderful.

So, settle in for another great year in the Twin Lakes area with our Libertyfest and parade, car show, Trees on Parade and so much more.

I hope to see you all out there!

HISTORY OF Twin Lakes

Sauk, Fox and Potawatomi tribes settled in the area, long before white settlers came. Native Americans found high ground, with abundant fishing and hunting, that were the means for their survival.

In 1833 after the Native American Indians were moved to reservations, settlers Jonathan Imeson, from England, and his wife Mary Wray, the daughter of another settler Thomas Wray, staked a claim in and area later known as English Prairie on the southern tip of Lake Elizabeth.

Their twin daughters Mary and Elizabeth were the first twins born on the Prairie. The lakes, formerly called Nippersink Lakes, were named after the twin girls and soon the area became known as Twin Lakes.

In 1859, the Kenosha, Rockford, and Rock Island Railroad Company laid tracks in the area passing through on the north side of Lake Mary bringing the outside world to Twin Lakes. By 1880 the depot was built with a sign on the side reading Twin Lakes.

Ice harvesting, farmers and weekend getaways bringing people to Twin Lakes were a key factor in the development of the town. Haegles’ ice

house was started on Lake Elizabeth in the late 1850s and more soon followed. Ice was harvested in large blocks and stored, to be sent to the city, for use in the summer.

The first hotel, the Ackerman, was erected in the 1870s. Estates, resorts, taverns and The Twin Lakes Ballroom, the largest ballroom in Wisconsin, made Twin Lakes a vacation destination by the turn of the century.

Summer estates, handed down to the next generations were common at the time. Twin Lakes prospered during the “Roaring ‘20s, as many claimed it was the resort capitol of the Midwest.

The Twin Lakes Ballroom, later called the Wonder Bar was unique because most of the Big Bands played there. Glen Miller, Tommy

Mary Wray, a native of England, was born June 15, 1816. She came to America in 1833 and resided in what was to become known as “English Prairie.” In 1837 she was married to Jonathan Imeson, also an early settler on the prairie. Their son Robert was the firstborn son in the county. There were eight children in all, including the first set of twins born on the prairie. The girls were baptized Mary and Elizabeth. Both lakes were named after these girls.

and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Dorothy Lamour and the Andrew Sisters all performed in the Ballroom. Lawrence Welk and his new wife, Fern, lived in a little room in the Twin Lakes Ballroom for the summer of 1931 when they came to Twin Lakes with a new band. Ice houses began declining in the 1930’s and the ice industry disappeared from Twin Lakes

By 1937, Twin Lakes was incorporated as a village, formed its own government and became a year-round community.

On Dec. 9, Ronald Meigs happened upon a car fire while driving in the 16100 block of 38th Street (Highway N) in Paris. Meigs, who did not hesitate to approach the vehicle to assess the situation, risked his own life in getting the door to the burning vehicle open and pulling the driver out to safety. Federal officials will soon end extra FoodShare benefits for state households The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, passed by Congress in late December, ends a federal program that has been providing additional benefits to households enrolled in Wisconsin’s FoodShare program. FoodShare households have been receiving the maximum amount for their household size or $95, whichever is more. In recent months, an average of approximately $80 million has been distributed monthly to help almost 400,000 households across our state struggling to afford food. This also indirectly supports Wisconsinites involved in food production and retail like farmers, truckers, and grocers. February 2023 will be the last month families will receive the extra benefits. Regular FoodShare benefits will continue. “The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that funds FoodShare is a crucial federal support to individuals and families, particularly in times like these when higher food prices are straining everyone’s budgets, but especially those of our most vulnerable,” said Department of Health Services Deputy Secretary Deb Standridge. “These additional funds provided to eligible Wisconsinites because of COVID-19 have made a real difference. With Congress deciding to end these federal funds, community support for local resources like food pantries and food banks will be more important than ever.” During the last two years, there have been historic federal cost of living increases to the maximum allotment amounts for households based on their size. Maximum allotment amounts have gone up approximately 34% from pre-pandemic levels. “We expect the end of these extra benefits will impact not only individuals and families, but also retailers and farmers who accept benefits,” said Stephanie Jung Dorfman, executive director of Feeding Wisconsin, a statewide association of six Feeding America food banks that serve the state’s 72 counties. “During tough times, such as the pandemic and high inflation, FoodShare has been key to mitigating food KENOSHA COUNTY PHOTO Southern Lakes Newspapers Local officials applaud Ronald Meigs and his stepson, Kaden Hentschel, for their heroic response to a firey crash in theTown of Paris on Dec. 9. TWIN LAKES POLICE DEPARTMENT

Non-Emergency: 262-877-9056

Emergency: 911 www.twinlakespolice.org

Established in 1937, The Twin Lakes Police Department provides law enforcement services to the Village of Twin Lakes 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The police department employs nine fulltime patrol officers, one detective, two patrol sergeants, one captain, and is led by Police Chief Adam Grosz. Five part-time police officers and a part-time seasonal water patrol staff also assists the department with providing year-round services to the community.

The Village of Twin Lakes also maintains a 24-hour dispatch center located at police headquarters. Five full-time and four parttime dispatchers handle radio, paging, and telephone communications for the Twin Lakes Police, Fire, and EMS departments.

In addition to emergency services, the police department hosts community events such as National Night Out the first Tuesday in August and coordinates Shop with a Hero each December before Christmas. These are two events where Twin Lakes Police officers give back to the community. They serve by helping those in need and interacting with our citizens.

The police department lobby is open to the public 24 hours a day and staff is always on site. There is a prescription medication dropoff box located in the lobby for citizens to dispose of any expired or unused prescription medication.

Just a few of the other services available at the police department include fingerprinting, department tours, a safe exchange area, and

vehicle lock-outs.

The highly trained, professional staff of the Twin Lakes Police Department are always ready to serve and assist the citizens and visitors of Twin Lakes in any way we can.
