Simmons Island beckons summer visitors to lake Island remains a showpiece of Kenosha’s lakefront

In 1835, John Buller ended his search for land to build a new town when he came upon the area where the Pike River empties into Lake Michigan.

Finding this area suitable for his new community, the small settlement prospered. It did, however, undergo a series of name changes, including changing from Pike Creek to Southport and finally to its present name Kenosha.

Just to the south of this original settlement was an island that was known as just that, The Island. In 1848 the first lighthouse was erected on this island as Southport began to make

its mark as a major port on Lake Michigan. Today a lighthouse remains on this spot although it is not the original one built in 1848. The current Lighthouse was built in 1866 and is the third lighthouse to stand on the island.

The wide, sandy beach and access to the Lake Michigan waters attracted local residents to the island in the summertime. A Bathhouse, in the Tudor Revival Style, was designed

by Chris Borggren and built in 1934 to accommodate visitors to the beach area.

The island was purchased by the City of Kenosha in 1955 where Simmons Island Park was officially established. The park was a popular spot for both residents and visitors to Kenosha. Because of its topography, it was possible to establish a park with many uses. The beach became a popular destination in the 1950s and 60s.

It is easy to understand why the beach was popular. The sandy stretch allowed children to play on the shore building their versions of castles, dragging buckets of water from the lake to hold their creation together. The lake itself with its waves lapping up on the shore enticed many into the cold water to swim or just splash. In the summer, the voices and laughter of those on the beach could be heard.

The bathhouse underwent several renovations over the years, but it also went through a time of disrepair and at one point was owned by a person who considered opening a restaurant in the bathhouse. The bathhouse was recognized for its historic value in 2003 when it was designated as historical and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Because of its topography, the park has more than one level.

On the bluff overlooking the lake in a grassy and wooded area are a playground and an open-air pavilion. The pavilion pro-

Rent and shelter – $36,705.16 People in all walks of life were helped with shelter and rent assistance. A family with two children and twin babies hospitalized for more than three months after being born premature were spared their upcoming eviction when we stepped in to pay the overdue rent and a month into the future. The father and mother had both lost their jobs after the long hospitalization of the mother and infants and many days off for the father. We provided emergency shelter for a senior woman and a single mother with children.

They have since both found employment, and we will be helping with first month’s rent and security deposit in the near future. A young woman disabled during surgery to remove a brain tumor was provided help in moving to an apartment close to her family. She had been living in an apartment that was much too far for her family to visit or help with her care. Gone are the tears of loneliness and despair thanks to all of you making this young woman’s biggest wish come true.

A family with a mentally disabled child was given help with their rent. The husband, wife and children had been struggling to get by on minimum wage jobs for months. We received referrals for rent assistance from several landlords we have worked with in the past. They were right to be concerned for their tenants as they were senior citizens dealing with a health crisis. The landlords were gracious enough to provide reduced rent.

A woman who suffered many life-altering injuries after being hit by an uninsured, unlicensed drunken driver was in need of our caring and sharing assistance. Her life was forever changed by this drunken driver. These are just a few of the people helped thanks to you and the Barnabas matching grant donors.

Citizens wander Silver Lake in search of clues

Perhaps you noticed a few folks roaming the streets in Silver Lake in mid June. Some were dressed a bit oddly while others wandered in small groups, going in and out of the doors of various businesses.

You may have pondered just what was going on. In fact, you were looking for clues.

That’s what these folks were doing. Some were looking for clues while others were pro-

viding them. The Community Baptist Church sponsored a neighborhood Clue game.

The game was the brainchild of Seth and Deanna Peterson.

“We played games like this in college at Northland International University,” Seth said, “and decided it would work well in our small town.”

“We started talking about youth group ideas, a few months ago,’ Deanna commented. “And then this idea of a live Clue game came up.”

Flyers were handed out at the Memorial Day parade and when the game was played June 12, 12 teams with a total of 44 players participated.

The game began in the Silver Lake Village Hall and Trustee Pat Dunn was on hand to unlock the door.

Team Dillon won, and they won big. The grand prize had donations from Scully’s Silver Lake Grill, Dairy Queen, Taste of Italy, Silver City Suds, American Legion and the Sil-

ver Lake Barber Shop.

Silver Lake police officer Robert Soma hauled the perp, Fred Meyer (Zach Zimmerman) away at the end. He shot old John Dalton.

Water Patrol to take part in crackdown Three-day sober boating initiative begins June 26

As the summer recreational boating season gets into full swing, Twin Lakes Police Water Patrol is ramping up its enforcement efforts as part of a national crackdown on boating under the influence.

The annual three-day, heightened awareness and enforcement campaign, Operation Dry Water, focuses on deterring boaters from boating

under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

On June 26 to 28, law enforcement agencies nationwide will be out in force, looking for boaters who choose to boat under the influence and removing them from the water. Increased awareness messaging about the dangers of boating under the influence, along with an increased number of officers

on the water, aim to drastically reduce the number of accidents and deaths due to impaired boating. “It is our job as law enforcement to identify and remove drunk or impaired boaters from the water – so that everyone else can continue to have an enjoyable boating season, and not become a victim of boating under the influence. Protecting the

public goes to the heart of our mission,� said Lt. Jensen. “Our agency is participating in Operation Dry Water, and joining thousands of law enforcement officers nationwide, to decrease the number of accidents and deaths that come as a result of boaters who choose to drink

I just got back from vacation, and I hate to complain, but the pressure of it is enough to get to a person. The decision-making alone nearly put me over the edge. Day after day. After day. Times seven. Or more if you’re forced to vacation for longer than one week.

It’s one thing after another.

Should we go to the beach or into town? Should we take the boat or the car? When in town should we go to the candy store or ice cream shop? Once at the ice cream shop do we get a single or double scoop? Sugar or waffle cone? Sprinkles or whipped cream or both?

It only gets worse from there.

Vacation provides the chance to sleep in. No alarm clocks. This produces a predicament of its own: breakfast for lunch or lunch for breakfast? And so it goes throughout the day – and night.

There’d never be enough time.

And, surprisingly, that was the best news of the week. If it wasn’t possible to do it all, why even try? Pressure gone, we were free to enjoy each moment of the rest of our vacation.

That, and start planning for the next one.
