Could sales tax be next for Antioch? Failed EMS referendum leaves board searching for answers By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Antioch Mayor Larry Hansen put an item on the agenda Dec. 10 Committee of the Whole meeting that didn’t get far at the November board meeting. He wanted to discuss a sales tax referendum in light of the failure of the property tax referendum in November that was eyed as a way to pay emergency medical services. The sales tax would not take the place of the EMS tax, but would be used to fund roads. The money normally used to fund roads and other capital improvements has already been shifted to cover EMS costs. Hansen said the voters spoke and said no to the property tax hike. “We have let the paving go in order to fund EMS,” Hansen said. “One advantage to the sales tax is that the money will come in quicker. We are already behind on infrastructure as it is.” Some board members, like Jerry Johnson, said that since the tax failed by just 108 votes,
there was enough momentum to pass the same referendum in April. Other board members, like Hansen and Dennis Crosby, warned that a repeat of the same referendum could go the way a referendum for Antioch High School did some years ago. Crosby said that Antioch township resident Alan Knutsen, explained that the same school referendum was put up four times. “The first time,” Crosby said, “it was a quiet no. It lost by 200 votes. The next time, it lost by 400, then 800 and finally 1,200.” “We might be at the quiet no now,” Crosby said, “and then hear a louder one if we try again. I think that a sales tax referendum has a better chance of passing.” Trustee Scoot Pierce spoke passionately about how people on fixed incomes and those in tough circumstances would feel the pinch of sales tax the most.

On to the North Pole
With his family looking on, Official Honorary Assistant Junior Conductor Hayden Pries, 15 months, is set to check everyone’s tickets during the ride to the North Pole (aka, the Buffalo Grove Metra station) on Dec. 11. Children, parents, and grandparents dressed in their pajamas, met at the Antioch Metra train station, hopped on board a special Metra train, and took a ride to Santa country where they were entertained with lunch, games, prizes, dancing, cookies and hot chocolate, and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus. Santa met with each child and then read the group a story before sending them back on the return-trip train to Antioch. The North Pole Express is one of the Antioch Parks and Recreation Department’s most popular events. The holiday tradition was expanded to 11 days this year. Tickets for all days were sold out on the second day they were available for sale.
