Lions come to the rescue Two local stores Club donates funds to busted in sting purchase stair chairs

Businesses targeted in alcohol sales check

By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

There was some roaring going on at Antioch Fire station 1 on March 31 when some Antioch Lions Club members gathered to celebrate the new equipment purchased with a $5,600 donation from the club. The department purchased two Stryker Stair-PRO stair chairs to replace two of the four stair chairs the department has been using. Those devices are metal with vinyl covers and a support a maximum weight of 350 pounds. The Stair-PRO can handle a maximum of 500 pounds and has many additional safety features. The new stair chairs are equipped with a track – like a bulldozer – so the chair can go down stairs without lifting. This creates less physical stress and risk of injury to emergency personnel. Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon said it saves by reducing worker’s compensation costs. “We pay about $100,000 a year,” he said, “and since we will use these stair chairs, we will receive an 8 percent credit, or a savings of $8,000.” Firefighter/paramedic Francisco Contreras-Gomez and firefighter/EMT Nick Godin recently gave a demonstration of how the device works and showed how the safety features of footrests and straps hold patients safely on the chair while they are moved. The safety straps allow the patient to feel secure on the chair and prevent a patient not only from falling but also from accidently striking out and hitting or kicking a rescue worker. The adjustable handles and built-in descent control allow operators to safely help patients down any type of stair with ease.

Antioch and Ingleside businesses were among the three retailers who illegally sold alcohol to minors during a recent round of compliance checks conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police Investigators. Of the 68 businesses checked throughout Lake County, three were found to be in violation by selling alcohol to underage custom-

ers. The following businesses, and cited employees, were found in violation of state law: • Rosko’s Citgo, 41452 Green Bay Rd., Wadsworth. Cited was Allison Hood, 41, of Wadsworth. • Jack Food Mart, 25238 Rt. 173, unincorporated Antioch. Cited was Imtiaz Kahn, 41, of Antioch. • Roy’s Long Lake Inn, 25368 Main St., Ingleside. Cited was Barbara Gaulke, 52, of Ingleside. All persons listed were issued a citation and released at the scene. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Fox Lake to host boating safety course

GAIL PECKLER-DZIKI Hi-Liter

Antioch firefighter/paramedic Francisco Contreras-Gomez demonstrates how the safety straps and foot rest keeps patients and rescue workers safe while firefighter/EMT Nick Godin explains how the adjustable handles and track make it easier and safer to transport patients in the Stryker stair chairs the fire department purchased with a donation from the Antioch Lions Club.

Certified instructors with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct a boating safety course on April 18.
