Sophia Rae, 5, gazes into a crystal ball at one of the vendor booths on opening day of this year’s Antioch Farmers Market at the northeast corner of Orchard Street and Main Street on June 4. The magical sphere, actually a glass paperweight, was for sale at the Knife Sharpening by Kris booth, one of a number of vendors who attend the weekly event. The market is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and is open on Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m.

Back in February, Vincent Accardo, who was campaign manager for recently elected Trustee Ed Macek, appeared before the Antioch Village Board to discuss a letter he received from the Antioch Firefighters Association that was addressed to candidates in the upcoming election. He appeared at the June 1 regular board meeting to contend the minutes for the February meeting didn’t accurately express what was said. “Mayor Hanson told Fire Chief Nixon that the association must have its own P.O. Box number,” Accardo said, “and that was not what was written in the minutes.” The minutes stated, “Those present suggested that the association obtain a P.O. Box and use that for correspondence.” Accardo said the letter was from the Antioch Firefighter’s Association yet the address and telephone number used was Station 1. More recently, Accardo said he received a letter for the pancake breakfast, sponsored by the Antioch Firefighter’s Association. The fire department phone number and address was used
again. “When I called the number on the letter (for the pancake breakfast) the assistant fire chief answered,” he said. Both Hanson and Village Attorney Robert Long agreed that the minutes needed to be corrected and that Nixon had been instructed regarding the need for the firefighter’s association to have a post office box and separate telephone number. Hanson then asked Nixon to respond to the questions from Accardo and Nixon replied that the association is completely separate from the fire department, and the association letterhead was used. He stated that no village resources were used for the letter, which was signed by the association president. “This is how its been done for 100 years,” Nixon said. “Nothing inappropriate is being done.” Village Trustee Scott Pierce is chairman of the emergency services committee and said he would be adding this issue to the list he is keeping of items that he plans to discuss with Nixon at their next meeting. The officers of the firefighters’ association are president Ryan Keefe, vice president Chris Nixon and secretary, Marianne Peistrup.
