EcoFair is Saturday
Event puts focus on environment By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
Junior Miss Antioch Lindsey Lubicz, 11, (from left) Little Miss Antioch Michaela Radecki, 7, and Miss Antioch Abigail Zienty, 16, are among the area residents who attended the grand reopening of the renovated Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., on Friday. The nearly century-old theatre was closed last May in order to undergo extensive interior modernization, an exterior facelift, and installation of a new digital projection system. A second boutique theatre next door was also built. Real estate developer Tim Downey spearheaded the community effort to save the theatre, assisted by a small army of volunteers. Financial support came through corporate and individual contributions, along with a loan from the village.
Get ready, get set and go to the fourth annual Earth Day EcoFair on Saturday. This event is sponsored by the Antioch Environmental Commission and will be held in the Antioch Elementary School gym from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The school is at 817 N. Main Street in Antioch. A big part of the event is the recycled art contest. Students from Antioch area elementary schools participate. Area businesses and the Antioch Park District donate prizes. Commission member and event organizer Amanda LeBrun said the main purpose of the EcoFair, besides fun, is information. There are also vendors that sell environmental friendly products. Visitors have a chance to discover facts about nature and the environment from the International Crane Foundation, Lake County Farm Bureau, Lake County Forest Preserves, Lake County Health Department and Waste Management. The environmentally friendly businesses slated to participate include Earthly Goods, Doterra Essential Oils, Natural Products Club,
Norwex, Skinny Fiber and Wildtree. LeBrun has been in charge of the event for the past three years. “I attended the first EcoFair and discovered I knew someone on the commission,” she said. “He invited me to join and I’ve handled this event since.” LeBrun explained, “I have been a teacher for almost 20 years and (I’m) always passionate about protecting the environment as well as enjoying being out in nature.” “As a teacher,” she continued, “the subjects I have taught include biology, environmental and earth science, and chemistry.” LeBrun has also attended numerous Lake County Forest Preserve workdays and coordinated Earth Day events as an environmental club sponsor at the various schools where she taught. For several summers, she was an environmental educator for the Willowbrook Wildlife Center, The Liberty Prairie Conservancy, and Lake Forest Open Lands. Save the bees Christina Wojciechowicz
