SPECIAL ISSUE: GIVING (V.) TAX SHELTERS

As of recent data, approximately 700 million people around the world live in extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $1.90 a day, o the World Bank This represents roughly 9% of the global

in the United States, the poverty threshold is significantly U S Census Bureau defines the poverty line as an income 6,500 for a family of four (as of 2023) According to the U.S eau, about 37 million Americans (roughly 11% of the were living below the poverty line in 2022

Most people regularly hear debates about taxes, particularly regarding the wealth of billionaires and how much they contribute. However, what often goes unnoticed are the complex legal loopholes that allow multimillionaires and billionaires to significantly reduce their tax burdens. One common strategy involves family foundations, which, in many cases, are used as tax shelters rather than purely philanthropic entities.

These foundations, while appearing as charitable efforts, can sometimes serve as a way for the ultra-wealthy to preserve their wealth while minimizing their tax obligations. This practice often goes unnoticed by the public, despite its far-reaching implications for both tax policy and charitable giving.

THE TAX HAVEN AND SHELTER THAT IS PHILANTHROPY

The debate surrounding the wealth of billionaires and the impact of their charitable donations is ever-present. Public discussions often focus on the vast fortunes amassed by the world’s richest individuals and the taxes they pay—or, in many cases, avoid. However, what often remains under the radar are the complex legal structures that allow these multimillionaires and billionaires to shield their wealth while simultaneously presenting themselves as benevolent philanthropists. This facade of charity hides a troubling reality: many of the so-called philanthropic efforts of the ultra-wealthy are little more than a sophisticated means of tax avoidance. These individuals may give away a portion of their wealth, but it is often a mere fraction of what they could contribute, with the majority of their assets cleverly hidden behind the veil of charitable donations, family foundations, and grants. In reality, these “charitable” efforts may have little to do with the true spirit of giving.

The public’s understanding of philanthropy is frequently shaped by high-profile donations and foundations, with names like the Gates Foundation or the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative coming to mind. These organizations often boast about the massive amounts of money they have directed toward global issues such as poverty, disease, and education. However, the amount of wealth actually disbursed through these foundations is often far smaller than what one might think. While these charitable endeavors may seem altruistic, they frequently amount to only a small percentage of the total wealth held by the individuals behind them—sometimes less than they would pay in taxes. Rather than engaging in direct charitable giving, the wealthiest people in society often use these foundations to maintain control over their wealth while still reaping the benefits of a “philanthropic” image.

One of the most insidious aspects of this system is the use of family foundations, which are often established with the primary goal of minimizing tax liabilities rather than maximizing charitable impact. These foundations are designed to allow individuals to claim tax deductions for their donations, even though the money often stays within a controlled family entity.

While these foundations may fund educational programs or health initiatives, much of the money they distribute may find its way back into the family’s business interests or be used to create a public image of generosity, rather than having a direct and substantial impact on the communities they claim to serve. In essence, these organizations can serve as tax shelters, allowing the ultra-wealthy to avoid taxes while publicly claiming to be charitable.

The scale and complexity of these foundations make it difficult for the public to fully understand where the money is going and what impact it is actually having. With vast sums of money at their disposal, these foundations often fund large-scale, high-profile projects that capture the media’s attention, but the actual outcomes can be far less impressive than the headlines suggest. In many cases, the distribution of wealth through these foundations is not designed to solve immediate problems, but to maintain the status quo and ensure the continued accumulation of wealth by the same people who claim to be helping others. The result is a system that benefits the rich while presenting a polished image of benevolence.

Contrast this with the approach taken by true philanthropists—those who give from the heart, often anonymously, without seeking the recognition or public accolades that accompany the larger foundations. These philanthropists understand that genuine charitable giving involves more than just writing a check. It requires a commitment to creating lasting change and addressing the root causes of societal issues. True philanthropy is not about the size of the donation, but the impact it creates. It is about engaging directly with the communities being served, listening to their needs, and using wealth in a way that empowers others to thrive. Whether it’s funding a local food bank, supporting education initiatives, or providing disaster relief, true philanthropists focus on making a difference, not on making a name for themselves.

THE MASK OF PHILANTHROPY, WHEN CHARITY IS JUST A TAX SHELTER?

Philanthropy, at its core, should be about improving lives—not about creating a financial system that serves to protect the wealth of the few. While tax incentives for charitable donations can encourage giving, the system has been exploited to such an extent that the line between genuine charity and selfinterest is often blurred. The wealthiest individuals have the means to donate on a far larger scale than they do, but they are often more focused on preserving their wealth and ensuring that they retain control over how it is used. As a result, many of their “charitable” contributions are not a true act of generosity but a way to shield their fortunes from taxes, while still maintaining their public image as philanthropists. The public must begin to recognize the difference between these two approaches to giving. True philanthropy is not just about donating a small percentage of one’s wealth—it is about using that wealth in ways that create meaningful, lasting change. It requires selflessness, not selfpreservation. True philanthropists are not just signing checks; they are out in the field, working alongside those they aim to help, and making a real difference in people’s lives. On the other hand, those who use philanthropy as a shield to protect their wealth are not engaged in true charitable giving —they are engaged in a form of wealth management that serves their interests, not the greater good.

The charity jet phenomenon is real Many larger nonprofits and foundations, including churches and universities, have taken to amassing private jets

In recent years, nonprofits have increasingly turned to private jets, claiming they are essential for efficiency, especially for organizations with global operations or urgent humanitarian missions. Private jets allow nonprofit leaders to reach remote areas quickly, respond to crises faster, and meet with donors or partners around the world. While these jets can play a crucial role in humanitarian efforts, they also raise ethical concerns.

Critics argue that spending millions on private aircraft risks undermining the credibility of nonprofits, suggesting a disconnect between their charitable missions and the luxury enjoyed by their executives. Many nonprofits are expected to prioritize resources directly benefiting those in need, and lavish spending on private jets may appear out of step with their public image. To maintain trust, nonprofits must ensure transparency and demonstrate that such expenditures truly contribute to their humanitarian goals. Ultimately, philanthropy should be about service, not status.

the use of private jets by nonprofit organizations raises critical questions about financial priorities. With limited resources, nonprofits must carefully consider how every dollar is spent to maximize impact.

The public expects donations to directly benefit the cause, not to subsidize the lifestyle of executives. While private jets may offer convenience, they can also divert substantial funds away from essential programs aimed at alleviating poverty, improving healthcare, or addressing environmental issues.

Nonprofits must be transparent about the justification for these expenses and ensure that they are in line with their mission to help those most in need. If private jets are deemed necessary, they should be used solely for operations that cannot be effectively managed through commercial means. Ultimately, nonprofits must uphold the values of empathy, integrity, and accountability, showing that their true focus is on service, not selfindulgence or luxury. Public trust hinges on this commitment to responsible stewardship.

NEW STANDARD: LARGE SCALE CHARITY LARGE SCALE TRAVEL

In recent years, a rising number of prominent churches and nonprofit organizations have come under scrutiny for purchasing private jets and booking stays at luxury hotels While some argue these lavish expenses are justified by the demands of global travel and the need to maintain security and efficiency, others see them as a misuse of funds that should be directed toward those in need As these organizations continue to grow, so too does the debate over whether such indulgences align with their mission to serve the greater good.

Supporters of private jets and luxury travel for religious leaders and nonprofit executives often point to the practical reasons for such expenses. The most frequently cited rationale is the need for efficiency and security. Leaders of large churches or international nonprofits often travel frequently to meet with donors, visit mission sites, or speak at events.

Commercial flights, with their unpredictable schedules and security hassles, can be both time-consuming and a potential risk to personal safety. In this context, a private jet may be seen as a tool that enables the leader to better serve their mission by allowing them to travel faster, more comfortably, and more securely.

for global ministries or organizations working on multiple continents, a private jet may be a logistical necessity. A large church or nonprofit may operate in regions with limited commercial flight access, and a private plane may be the only way to reach remote areas in a timely manner. For example, ministers who travel frequently to disaster zones or impoverished areas to provide aid or spiritual guidance may find that commercial air travel simply isn't practical.

Similarly, staying in high-end hotels is often framed as a matter of practicality. Nonprofit executives and church leaders attending conferences or meetings may need to stay in locations where these hotels offer the best access to venues, provide better security, or offer amenities that help them maintain their health and well-being during intense schedules.

However, this rationale often comes under scrutiny when the costs of private jets and lavish accommodations seem excessive, especially in light of the mission-driven nature of churches and nonprofits. The public perception of nonprofits is that donations should be used directly to help those in need, whether through poverty alleviation, educational programs, or disaster relief efforts. When large sums of money are spent on luxury travel, it can be seen as a betrayal of the trust donors place in these organizations. The line between practicality and extravagance can often become blurred.

For example, the case of prominent televangelists and megachurch pastors purchasing private jets has been highly controversial. Some argue that these leaders, who claim to be spreading the word of God, should live modestly, in line with the values they promote. Critics argue that these lavish expenditures send a message that personal luxury is more important than the well-being of the communities they serve.

nonprofit organizations with large overheads, including luxury accommodations, can be accused of prioritizing prestige over mission. The public expects transparency and accountability in how donations are spent, and when large portions of budgets are directed toward non-essential luxuries, donors may begin to question whether their contributions are truly making an impact where it's most needed. Ultimately, the key issue surrounding the purchase of private jets and stays in high-end hotels is the need for transparency. Whether it's a church or a nonprofit, these organizations should be held to high standards of accountability. Donors, congregants, and the public have the right to know how their funds are being spent and whether the organization's leaders are acting in the best interests of those they claim to serve.

Organizations that justify luxury spending with the claim that it is necessary for their work must be able to demonstrate the specific value these expenditures bring to their mission. Clear and detailed reports on travel budgets, how these expenses align with organizational goals, and the impact these decisions have on the communities they serve can help to mitigate criticism.

At the same time, religious and nonprofit leaders must be cautious not to allow their personal lifestyles to become a distraction from the mission at hand. Excessive spending can damage the reputation of an organization, erode public trust, and ultimately hurt the very causes they seek to support.

The issue of private jets and luxury hotels for larger churches and nonprofits is complex. While there are legitimate reasons for such expenditures in certain contexts, it is crucial that these organizations remain transparent and accountable to the public. Leaders must balance the need for efficiency and security with the responsibility to manage resources in a way that aligns with the values of their mission. As the debate continues, one thing is clear: churches and nonprofits must strive to use their resources in a way that demonstrates genuine commitment to the greater good, rather than personal indulgence.

THE QUIET BILLIONAIRE

PHILANTRHOPISTS

Most of the time, when you hear about celebrities or the wealthy, it's something crafted by public relations firms to serve a specific purpose for the client How many of us can truly name billionaires around the world? If we can, we'll likely mention the same few names over and over, because, for the most part, billionaires prefer to remain out of the spotlight However, there are some who choose to give and make a difference quietly, without any hype or fanfare

We are traditionally captivated by the wealth and influence of highprofile billionaires, it’s easy to overlook the quieter, more understated acts of generosity happening in the shadows of fame. While figures like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett dominate the narrative of philanthropy, there is a cadre of lesser-known billionaires whose contributions, though less publicized, are no less transformative.

These individuals represent the best of humanity’s potential, using their wealth not as a display of power but as a tool for profound and lasting change.

At Southern Business Review, we pride ourselves on delving beyond surface-level stories, spotlighting leaders whose work often goes unnoticed. As we expand our focus to include philanthropy, it is only fitting to celebrate ten billionaires whose giving reshapes lives, uplifts communities, and addresses the world’s most pressing issues.

Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay, has quietly become one of the most influential philanthropists of the modern era. While his name is often associated with the revolutionary online marketplace he created, Omidyar’s legacy is rapidly being shaped by his profound commitment to giving back. Through his philanthropic venture, the Omidyar Network, he has donated over $1 billion to initiatives that promote human rights, economic opportunity, and the responsible use of technology His approach to philanthropy exemplifies the intersection of profit and purpose a space where Omidyar believes real, lasting change happens

As of 2025, Omidyar's estimated net worth stands at around $20 billion, but unlike many billionaires who amass wealth primarily for personal gain or luxury, Omidyar has focused his fortune on advancing causes that benefit society at large Perhaps one of the most striking aspects of Omidyar's approach to philanthropy is his decision to remain largely out of the public eye Unlike many highprofile billionaires who are often in the spotlight for their wealth or personal endeavors, Omidyar operates with a quiet, behind-thescenes presence

He is not driven by the need for recognition or praise Instead, he is focused on enabling others to succeed and ensuring that the resources he has amassed are used to create a fairer, more equitable world His work speaks for itself, with each initiative contributing to a broader, more inclusive future.

In contrast to those who flaunt their wealth, Omidyar has made a deliberate choice to direct his fortune toward causes that have a farreaching, lasting effect on society. By prioritizing the betterment of others over personal gain, he has positioned himself as an example of how extreme wealth can be wielded for good His approach not only transforms lives but also challenges the very notion of what it means to be a successful billionaire in today’s world. Pierre Omidyar’s story is a powerful reminder that wealth, when used thoughtfully and responsibly, can be a force for positive change one that creates opportunities and amplifies voices that have long been unheard

Gina Rinehart, Australia’s wealthiest person, quietly directs much of her fortune toward philanthropy through her family foundation, focusing on education, healthcare, and community development. Despite her significant contributions, she avoids the media spotlight, preferring to let her work speak for itself. As a result, many are unaware of her philanthropic efforts.

GINA RINEHART

Gina Rinehart, Australia's richest person and one of the wealthiest women in the world, is perhaps best known for her success in the mining industry, particularly through her company Hancock Prospecting. However, behind her immense fortune, Rinehart’s approach to wealth is often overshadowed by her quieter philanthropic efforts

While she is a prominent figure in global business, it is her use of wealth for societal good, rather than personal extravagance, that offers a compelling lesson on the role of billionaires in shaping the world

With an estimated net worth exceeding $30 billion, Rinehart's financial success is largely attributed to her shrewd management of Hancock Prospecting, which controls vast iron ore reserves in Western Australia However, unlike many of her billionaire peers who seek the spotlight for their wealth or personal indulgences, Rinehart has steered much of her fortune towards philanthropy and public welfare. Though she rarely seeks public attention for her charitable contributions, her financial influence has reached far beyond the mining industry, addressing some of Australia's most pressing challenges. Rinehart's philanthropic efforts are primarily directed through her family's charitable foundation, the Hancock Family Foundation The foundation has made significant contributions to a variety of causes, including medical research, education, and community development Rinehart’s focus is on providing long-term support for initiatives that foster independence and self-sufficiency For instance, the Hancock Family Foundation has been instrumental in funding scholarships for disadvantaged students, promoting academic excellence and helping young Australians achieve their potential Her investments in education are not just about providing financial assistance; they are about opening doors to a future where individuals can thrive based on merit, not circumstance

While Rinehart’s fortune continues to grow through her business ventures, her efforts to use that wealth for good underscore a more pragmatic and long-term vision of philanthropy Through her investments in education, medical research, and community development, she is shaping a legacy that extends well beyond the boardroom. It is a testament to the potential of wealth when used responsibly and thoughtfully: not for personal indulgence, but as a force for enduring positive change.

Lynne Schusterman is not a household name for many, but her influence in the world of philanthropy is both profound and far-reaching. As the chair of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, she has dedicated her wealth and resources to initiatives that promote social justice, education, and community empowerment—particularly for marginalized groups. Through her strategic and thoughtful giving, Schusterman has carved out a reputation as one of the leading philanthropists of her generation, using her fortune not for personal gain but to create meaningful, lasting change.

LYNNE SCHUSTERMAN

Born into a family of entrepreneurs, Schusterman inherited much of her wealth from her late husband, Charles, who founded the energy company Samson Resources After his passing, she took the reins of their family foundation, which has since become a major force in both the U.S. and globally. Despite her significant contributions, Schusterman tends to keep a relatively low profile, preferring to let the organizations she supports and the communities she empowers take the lead. Her philanthropic work is often done behind the scenes, without the fanfare or publicity that typically accompanies high-profile donations This deliberate approach to giving reflects her belief that the impact of philanthropy should be measured by the lasting change it creates, not by personal recognition or accolades

In addition to her philanthropic endeavors, Schusterman’s leadership extends to various boards and initiatives that align with her values of justice, equality, and empowerment. She is a strong advocate for women’s rights, gender equality, and creating opportunities for women in leadership positions Her advocacy for gender equality has become a defining part of her legacy, particularly as she works to ensure that women, especially women of color, are given the same opportunities as their male counterparts

Unlike many of his billionaire peers who seek recognition for their charitable efforts, Yass uses his wealth with a quiet determination, focusing on systemic change and long-term impact rather than public acclaim.

JEFF YASS

Yass’s philanthropic approach is driven by his firm conviction that the path to lasting change lies in addressing the root causes of societal issues, not merely their symptoms This philosophy is evident in his strategic investments in policy advocacy, education, and economic reform. Rather than donate to causes that provide short-term relief, Yass prefers to fund initiatives that seek to reform the underlying structures of society, particularly in the fields of public policy and educational choice

One of the most prominent aspects of Yass’s philanthropic efforts is his support for school choice A vocal advocate for education reform, Yass has directed significant funding toward initiatives that empower parents to choose the best educational options for their children Through his contributions, Yass has supported a variety of organizations that promote charter schools, school vouchers, and other alternatives to the traditional public education system. His belief in expanding educational opportunities is rooted in the idea that all children, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to quality education

Beyond education, Yass has been a leading donor to libertarian causes, supporting think tanks and advocacy groups that focus on reducing government intervention in markets and promoting individual liberty His contributions to organizations such as the Cato Institute, the Institute for Justice, and the Reason Foundation are a reflection of his commitment to free-market principles and limited government For Yass, philanthropy is not just about donating money; it’s about influencing public policy to create an environment where individuals have more control over their lives and opportunities Despite his considerable impact, Yass remains largely out of the public eye, preferring to let his work speak for itself. Unlike many billionaires who relish the spotlight and public recognition for their charitable endeavors, Yass operates with a more understated approach His commitment to philanthropy is rooted in his desire to create long-lasting, systemic change rather than seeking personal acclaim. Jeff Yass’s story is one of quiet, calculated generosity, with a focus on addressing the root causes of inequality and inefficiency in society His philosophy that true change comes from policy reform and individual empowerment has positioned him as a major force in the world of philanthropy, even if his efforts remain largely under the radar

Kirsten Rausing, a prominent member of the Swedish Rausing family, is best known for her significant contributions to the packaging industry, particularly through Tetra Pak, the multinational food packaging company founded by her grandfather. However, it is her work in philanthropy that has truly defined her legacy, as she uses her considerable wealth to champion causes such as animal welfare, environmental conservation, and human rights.

KIRSTEN RAUSING

With an estimated net worth of over $12 billion, Rausing could easily have followed in the footsteps of many high-profile philanthropists, seeking personal recognition for her giving However, much like other members of her family, she has remained relatively private about her charitable endeavors, preferring to focus on long-term systemic change rather than shortterm publicity Rausing's approach to philanthropy is deeply values-driven, with a focus on sustainability, ethical treatment of animals, and supporting marginalized communities around the world

Rausing’s philanthropic efforts are primarily channeled through the Tetra Pak Foundation and the Kirsten Rausing Foundation These organizations focus on a variety of causes, with an emphasis on advancing animal rights and environmental protection.
