>
Two Trust teams have been shortlisted for two Nursing Times Workforce awards thanks to successful initiatives for supporting age diversity and developing our own workforce. The two categories that Southend staff have been shortlisted for are ‘Best diversity and inclusion initiative’ and ‘Best workplace for learning and development for over 1,500 nursing staff’. Diane Sarkar, Chief Nursing Officer, Mid Essex Hospital, Southend, Basildon and Thurrock NHS Foundation Trusts, said: “I am very proud of all the teams on such a fantastic achievement. Southend University Hospital recognises that in order to be able to deliver high quality care to our patients and their families we need to attract high calibre staff and to retain the excellent, dedicated and talented nursing and midwifery staff we have.” Denise Townsend, Director of Nursing, added: “I am delighted that we have been shortlisted for two awards as it recognises and rewards the excellent work being done

by our hospital to support the nursing and midwifery workforce.” Best workplace for learning and development for over 1,500 nursing staff Southend has faced challenges with registered nurse vacancies and has used national, EU and international recruitment campaigns with varied success. September 2018
NHSI Green rating An infection, prevention and control (IPC) inspection took place on 15 August by NHSI and the Trust has successfully achieved a Green rating. The inspectors noted that there were clear improvements in all aspects of IPC since their previous visits in August 2017 (Red rated) and May 2018 (Amber rating), and said the Trust should be very proud of the hard work by all involved to achieve this rating. The visit included Shopland Ward, Gordon Hopkins/CCU and High Dependancy Unit and the report stated that all of these areas: •
• • •
had patients who were well cared for, mobilising or sitting out where possible were personal protective equipment (PPE) compliant clean wards; tidy and uncluttered Staff observed bare below the elbows (BBE).
Overall the report also noted that there was high and low dusting throughout the Trust, general corridors were clean and cluster free, Patslides were clean and all bathrooms had wipeable cords.
