Champion idea for raising concerns at work The trust promotes a climate of openness and dialogue in which staff are encouraged to raise any concerns about potential risks, malpractices or wrongdoing, breaches of the law, regulations or similar concerns (“whistleblowing”) without fear of retaliation. A group of Speak Up Champions have been introduced to help support staff who may need to raise concerns.

There are 12 Speak up Champions that can be found across all directorates, they are not union officers, but are staff who have a genuine interest in helping the trust to listen to the concerns of colleagues. Please feel free to contact any of the champions on the list below regardless of your department or position.

When should I whistleblow?

Examples of concerns raised include abuse of patients or unsafe practices; disregard of trust policies and procedures and concerns about conduct or performance of colleagues which affects patient safety or care.

As set out in the NHS Constitution, everyone has a duty to raise concerns about potential risks, malpractices or wrongdoing, breaches of the law, regulations or dangerous practice so as not to compromise patient safety,

Raising a concern: Step one Raise it with your immediate line manager or lead clinician.

This should be done verbally first, you may be asked to submit your concerns in writing later. Speak up Champions can be contacted to offer advice and support through this process.

Step two Email the internal confidential email address managed by the raising concerns administrator at raisingconcerns@southend. nhs.uk or writing your concerns

to the administrator at Britannia House, which will be acknowledged within three working days.

Step three If the above channels have been followed and you still have concerns, or if you feel that the matter is so serious that you cannot discuss it with any of the individuals listed above, contact the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian. Their role is to hear concerns and report them to the chief executive or board or they may also report directly to the national officer.

World first for wrist operation A woman from Witham is first in world to have pioneering wrist operation at Southend Hospital by world renowned orthopaedic surgeon Greg Packer.

ack in 2010 Ingrid Leatherdale, 50, from Witham, broke her right wrist and has since had no movement in it at all. Normally this would have meant an operation to fuse it meaning she would never have any movement in it ever again. But thanks to her world first operation at Southend Hospital, which took place just before Christmas, normal movement should be possible again in the near future.

Ingrid said: "It's been life-

affecting in lots of everyday ways such as really having to think and compensate before getting dressed, opening something simple like a door or not being able to do things like ironing, although I'm not looking forward to going back to that! But seriously, you have to just adjust so much all the time."

World renowned orthopaedic surgeon Mr Greg Packer, who is also clinical director for musculo-skeletal services, acknowledged how much impact wrist damage

can have. He said: "We have an amazing amount of wrist movement as humans and a special form of wrist movement known as the 'dart throwers' motion, which this kind of operation is designed to replace. The operation was a partial wrist replacement, and currently this is the only specifically designed partial replacement in the world.”

The original idea for a partial replacement prosthesis came from Professor Scott Wolfe at the hospital for Special Surgery in New York,

the oldest orthopaedic hospital in the United States, which is considered one of the top hospitals in the world for joint replacement. Mr Packer was approached by the professor as he has extensive wrist replacement experience.

Hospital lottery reveals its first winner After launching in December, our Staff Lottery has revealed its first jackpot winner.

Kath Leech, a clinical coding manager, won the main £395 prize in its inaugural December draw.

Kath said: “I was shocked, but really pleased and it was perfect timing for Christmas.

Win or lose though it’s just great to know our money is going to a good cause.”

The lottery, which is run by Southend Hospital Charity, isn’t just a money spinner for staff, who each month have the opportunity to win 12 cash prizes, but crucially it’s raising extra cash to help make a difference for patients

Lucy Thomas-Clayton, associate director of community engagement, said: “We know from the support we’ve had from staff here at Southend that they are a very generous lot.

“It’s been no surprise that people have signed up for lottery numbers in their droves. The key thing is that the more people who join, the greater the prize fund for the hospital charity and prize winners.”

The target is for 1,000 people to sign up, which will then see a maximum winnable prize fund of £1,000, and then be split as 1 x £500, 2 x £100,

4 x £50 and 5 x £20. Until that magic figure is reached the prize pot will be made up of 50 percent of the monthly proceeds. Currently there are just over 800 numbers in play.

Lucky numbers cost £2 each, up to five can be bought, and monies are taken directly from your salary. The draw takes place on the second Thursday of each month with numbers randomly selected by an independent adjudicator.

Winning numbers will appear in Friday Round Up. Winners will be notified by email and a bank transfer will be made directly to prize winners.

Consultant named regional trainer of the year

Key changes win top regional award Mr Sanjaya Kalkur, a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and college tutor, has been selected to receive the first ever Regional Trainer of the Year award from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) – beating trainers from 16 other regional hospitals in the process.

The RCOG awards for excellence in training were established to recognise and reward individuals who have attained a high level of achievement and Mr Kalkur was selected by the regional trainees committee of obstetrics and gynaecology having been nominated by several of his trainees.

Mr Kalkur said: “I am delighted to have been chosen for this award and I am grateful to my trainees and the regional training committee for choosing me to be the first recipient of the regional trainer award.”

registrar, Stacey Bryan, 31, from Romford. Stacey, who works with Mr Kalkur in gynaecology theatres and clinics as well as on the labour ward, said: “I nominated Mr Kalkur because he goes out of his way to ensure that training is upheld and training opportunities are available at Southend University Hospital.

He is very approachable, listens and cares about his trainees.”

As well as highlighting

the quality of training at the hospital, Mr Kalkur’s award signals a remarkable turnaround in fortunes within the department of obstetrics and gynaecology.

When the General Medical Council (GMC) rated the department 140th in the country for training, Mr Kalkur and his team implemented key changes which saw the department rise to 40th according to the 2015 GMC survey.

Key changes included: good consultant-led teaching sessions; ultrasound training sessions for trainees; supportive environment which acts on the educational needs and aspirations of the trainees; introduced speciality examination preparation and training.

First cohort complete prestigious leadership programme Consultants Dr Venkat Raman (obstetrics and gynaecology) and Dr Henna Jaleel (sexual health) are part of the first enrolled cohort to successfully complete The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme.

The highly prestigious programme is fully accredited leading to a Masters (MSc) in Healthcare Leadership (jointly awarded by the University of Birmingham and the Manchester University), and also an NHS Leadership Academy Award in Senior Healthcare Leadership.

Dr Raman said: “As a result of completing the programme, I am a better and more effective leader. The programme has prepared me for the demands of senior leadership in today’s – and tomorrow’s – NHS. In the

future, I look forward to using my enriched leadership skills in promoting systemswide coordinated care in the NHS, which is one way of addressing future challenges.”

The leadership programme has also enabled Dr Jaleel to successfully lead and support the sexual health department through a process of change.

Sexual health services across the country are encountering challenges of reorganisation in

order to attain sustainability and Dr Jaleel used principles learnt on the programme to submit a successful joint tender with the community provider SEPT. “The course helped me to understand about the impact of human factors on decision making,” said Dr Jaleel. “It helped me understand that a real team has no institutional boundaries and all the institutions in the NHS can be

brought together if we have a common agenda of providing safe and effective patient care.”

Both consultants hope that their successful completion of the programme will act as a catalyst for others to do the same. “I am hoping it will inspire many more middle-managers to consider enrolling into this prestigious programme,” said Dr Raman.

“It will help to have a critical mass of senior leaders in the organisation who have undergone a formal leadership development programme and I strongly believe that with the challenges facing the NHS currently and in the future, such programmes will have long lasting and positive impact on improving front line care.”

Over 50 years in theatres

Last Christmas Last Christmas we didn’t give you our heart but we did bring you the golden ticket (see below) as well as... the lights switch on (1), PAT dogs (2), best dressed office (4) and tree (5), along with your continued support of HARP (6).

Staff from Castle Point

and Rochford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) donated hand-picked gifts to fill 25 hand-sewn bags that formed a life-sized advent calendar (3).

The bags of gifts were handed out to patients in Southend Hospital over the Christmas period.

Alice ‘Mama’ Chimusaru, 67, has been part of the Southend team since 1995 and Win Chinnery, 57, since 1982, the pair clocking up over 50 years of dedication in theatres between them.

The pair have been described as being like ‘mums’ to team after team of theatre staff during their tenure, hence Alice gaining the nickname ‘Mama’. The deputy team leader for gynaecology and urology said: “Theatres has always been about teamwork. I’ll really miss the people and friends because they are like a second family.”

Alice and Win both agree much has changed since they started in theatres with it expanding in size from six theatres to ten during their working time at Southend, that importantly surgery across the NHS had become much safer and that they had seen massive

advances in technologies and innovations. Governance lead, Win, said: “I hope I have inspired people to think about what they are doing and how they can ensure that they keep the patient safe. We’ve helped put many things in place to ensure it has never been safer.”

David Heaver, clinical service manager for theatres, said: “Both Win and Alice have given their all for many years, and are two of the hardest working nurses I have come across, but more than that they are two of the loveliest girls I have had the pleasure of working with.

I was always having to tell them to go home!”

Both are happy to continue spreading their wealth of knowledge and expertise having agreed to support our bank.

They said: “You can take the girl out of theatres, but not theatres out of the girl.

Staff step it up

A

journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, so mused philosopher Lao-Tzu, but now hospital staff have been putting their best feet forward as part of the latest hotly-contested pedometer challenge, which took place over a period of two months.

The challenge, which gives a fresh meaning to having some healthy competition, has been run (or should that be walked) for the last four years by the occupational health service.

Barbara Ray, office manager from occupational health, said: “One of the aims of the service is to promote healthy living and to offer people of different abilities across the trust the opportunity to take part in a team event. The hospital looks after the health of the public, but the health and well-being of our staff is also vitally important, so it was great to see 10 teams of eight rise to the challenge as they recorded their steps both at home and work.”

The prizes for the pedometer challenge, presented by Diana Mhiribidi deputy head of occupational health, were awarded to the ‘pavement princesses’ from the Education Centre who were announced as the overall winners of the challenge with an outstanding 4,713,806 steps.

As well as winning the team prize the ‘pavement princesses’ also had the top two female members with the most steps, with Trish

Turner and Alison Cairns both receiving a prize. Joshua Purkiss of team ‘pods for the paediatric outpatients’, whose team collectively finished third, got the prize for the male with the most steps.

Alison Cairns, assistant librarian (marketing and outreach), said: “I found walks near home which took me to different places. I got off the bus a stop earlier and walked round the hospital when I had time between finishing work and going to a meeting.”

Knitting up a storm for dementia patients Crafters across Southend are grabbing their needles to create garments known as twiddle muffs for dementia patients at Southend Hospital.

They may look like openended sleeves, but the muffs, with buttons of all shapes and sizes attached inside and out, can provide reassurance and comfort for patients with the debilitating condition, giving them something to do with their hands and soothing agitation.

both from Trevett House, a sheltered housing complex in Southchurch, are avid knitters.

Pam, 79, decided to help after residents at the house were visited by Michael Daley, Southend Hospital dementia specialist, as part of dementia awareness training he was running.

She has now enlisted the help of other knitters. To donate or receive donations of buttons or wool, please call Pam on 01702 469984.

Quitting smoking needn’t be a drag Looking to stamp out smoking or say sayonara to cigs? Kate Livett and Karen Harman, smoking cessation practitioners, are here to help as the trust’s stop smoking advisors.

And they are proving to be a hit with those staff who are already seeing them for help.

The pair offer a 12-week support programme for trust

staff providing 10 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Products such as patches and lozenges are tailored to suit each individual. There is a single prescription charge for each item and this would be for the 10 weeks unless you are exempt.

The first four weeks are the crucial time following your

quit date and the practitioners would see you once a week during that periods.

Thereafter, depending on the support you require it can be every two weeks. During each session a CO reading is taken to assess your quit status and advice and support is also provided.

Audit day encourages delivery of better care Sharing learning to improve the experience of outcomes of patients is central to Southend Hospital’s annual research and audit open day.

The day is a chance for clinical teams from across the trust to discuss the outcomes of research and audit projects through presentations and discussion sessions with colleagues.

Professor Bhaskar Dasgupta, clinical director for research and development and chairman of the research and audit open day, said: “Southend is excellent in its high quality research and audit studies, producing a large number of publications in peer-reviewed, high impact medical journals. This culture leads to better training and the research and audit open day helps trainees to develop themselves by taking part in academic activities.”

is a process of improving quality that looks at the care hospitals provide against national guidelines and standards. It is one of many tools used by NHS trusts to improve patient experience, care and safety. covered everything from cuff pressure measurement and subglottic port aspiration to prevent ventilator acquired pneumonia (VAP) in the intubated patient; a review of mortality associated with intestinal obstruction without hernia; enhanced recovery pathway in obstetrics, and use of electronic obstetric anaesthetic database to monitor practice and patient satisfaction.

> STAFF NOTICES Welcome to... Karen Hussey Karen began working for the trust as the new equality, diversity and inclusion advisor. She has 24 years’ experience working in the NHS within a human resources function, with the last 18 years spent at SEPT. Karen has had varied experience covering employee and patient engagement/inclusion, wellbeing, general employee relations but always with a special interest in equality and diversity. Karen said: “I live in the local area so I’m really looking forward to developing equality and diversity best practice within the trust and making strong links with the community”.

Welcome to... Rev David Childs In January, the trust welcomed the arrival of its new lead chaplain, the reverend David Childs, a former parish priest in Essex and Oxfordshire and chaplain at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

David said: “I may be the lead chaplain or the face of chaplaincy but there’s a really good team of people around me.

It’s a privilege to be in a role where I meet people of every possible outlook and background.

You realise ‘wow’ humanity is exciting. I’m also looking forward to getting to know the staff. If the ones I’ve met so far are anything to go by, then there’s some really good friendships to be made.”

Brian Shipley Brian Shipley, our former director of finance, passed away peacefully last December. Brian dedicated over 20 years of his career to the NHS, first as director of finance and deputy chief executive for Essex Ambulance Service where he played a key role in creating the air ambulance charity. He retired from his role as director of finance at Southend in 2014 after more than eight years in post. Brian was a well-loved and well-respected member of staff who worked closely with so many different departments over the years.

We will miss him dearly.

Joyce Long Joyce, a Southend Hospital charity champion, who received an MBE for her services to charity in 2006, has died at the age of 86. The much-loved matriarch raised more than £1.5 million for Southend Hospital and a further £500,000 for London hospitals in an incredible fundraising career spanning more than 30 years. The cash came via a series of ‘pop up’ charity shops and latterly through her famous garden sales, held three or four times a year. Trust chairman Alan Tobias OBE said: “The name Joyce Long MBE is synonymous with fundraising here at Southend Hospital and we are deeply saddened by her death.”

Joyce is survived by Angie, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, aged from three to 23.

CLOSER LOOK Each month The Look meets with colleagues from around the trust.

This month we meet Dr David Dommett, a radiation and laser protection advisor.

Tell us about yourself?

I have quite a varied work history and have worked at many NHS sites (Royal Sussex County, Mount Vernon, Royal Marsden and North Middlesex) and spent almost 10 years working for GlaxoSmithKline in medicine development using imaging. I primarily work in radiotherapy, but have experience in positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance, nuclear medicine and of course radiation protection.

What does your job entail?

I’m here to advise on radiation and laser safety, though I also work as the magnetic resonance safety expert for Southend – in addition to my role as a clinical scientist and head of radiation quality assurance within the radiotherapy department. If people have questions about safety, shielding requirements, protection of staff, personal protective equipment (PPE) and so on, then it’s my job to give them up to date advice – in a way they understand.

What do you love about your roles?

I love meeting different people and the constant challenges I am given. As I am quite new to the role here there are several people I still have to introduce myself to. Radiation and laser protection affects so many different parts of the trust, from the breast unit through to the new vascular theatre.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Strange as it may seem, getting some overflow alarms in the drains outside nuclear medicine. It turned out to be a very interesting project involving battling through undergrowth and in the end taking up manhole covers under buildings. However, and with grateful thanks to Manoj Chohan and his team who had to go down the drains themselves, we achieved it!
