Welcome to Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s learning prospectus for the coming year.

This is the first time we have produced such a comprehensive guide to the Sue Hardy - Chief Executive opportunities for learning and development in the Trust and I am delighted to have been asked to provide this forward as I know that developing and supporting our people to reach their full potential is the key both to achieving the best possible patient care and to our collective success as an organisation.

Of course it also contains details of our statutory and mandatory training courses are many of which are now e-Learning based, making it easier for staff to access and complete them, and following feedback from staff this prospectus aims to make it easier to recognise what training is most appropriate for your role.

We are keen to support our staff with their personal as well as professional development and offer a range of opportunities to increase your knowledge and skills to help in both your current role, as well as exploring possibilities for role and career progression.

New to Southend University Hospital?

Welcome to Southend University Hospital. We are so pleased you joined us here at the Trust, we hope that you are made welcome and settle in soon.

You will begin your employment with Southend University Hospital by attending our Trust Induction Welcome day, followed by a number of Statutory and Mandatory training events according to your role (check your training requirements via the Training Needs Analysis (TNA) grid on the homepage of iLearn).

You will then work through the Induction checklist with your manager to make sure you have a chance to talk about all that you need to know to help you to feel confident in your new role as quickly as possible.

> How do I know what training I need to do?

We all have a responsibility to make sure we are providing safe, as well as high quality services. To find out which courses are essential for you in your role, please look at the most recent training needs analysis which is available on iLearn. The TNA also shows how frequently refreshers are required. Please make sure you stay up to date with your Statutory and Mandatory training.

We will do our best to remind you of courses you need to do, and reports of training are made available to managers and directors on a regular basis.

It is your responsibility to undertake required training.

Once you have completed your Statutory and Mandatory training you will want to focus on developing the skills and knowledge you need to enable you do your job as well as possible.

New starters have their own learning portal within iLearn called ‘Help! I’m New’ this holds the welcome day guide, the local induction paperwork and a whole host of interesting articles and support documents.

Welcome Day > Aim: The Welcome Day is mandatory for all new starters. Its aim is to introduce the mission, purpose, vision and values of the Trust and link them to the actions expected by staff working here at Southend University Hospital.

The Welcome day uptake is reported on a monthly basis to each of the Clinical Directorates.

How do I find out where and when courses are available?

Access to e-Learning and information about the dates and venues for face-to-face training can be found via iLearn. You can access iLearn through our intranet site STAFFnet or through the IT links on the Trust website. > How do I book on a course?

If you wish to enrol on a course or begin some e-Learning, you can find your topic by searching for it in the ‘catalogue search’ on iLearn’s home page. Enter a key word (e.g. fire) in to the ‘search’ box and then click the magnifying glass button.

Select the course you would like to undertake by clicking on the course title. Please ensure you read the information especially for e-Learning as some e-Learning is hosted on external websites.

> What if a course that I want to complete is not provided by Southend University Hospital?

If there is a specialist course or continuing professional development (CPD ) opportunity that you are interested in completing (that isn’t provided internally) we recommend you discuss this with your manager to look into the feasibility of you getting the funding and/or study time to attend .

When you are ready to book, click on the calendar icon on the right hand side of the course title. You will be presented with the dates available and you can book yourself onto your preferred date by clicking on the green arrow for that selection. You will then receive an email notification and the course will appear in your ‘Learning’ area (as below).

You will need to make sure you are up to date with your Statutory and Mandatory training, and that the learning need is identified in your personal development plan.

It is essential that you record any training attended on iLearn, so that the Trust has an accurate record of your development.

Statutory, Mandatory & Core Training Statutory, mandatory and core training is aligned specifically to your role.

This section will provide you with the course descriptions, target audience and time lines.

Stat/Man training Statutory and Mandatory training represents a significant investment and undertaking for all staff working within Southend University Hospital (often on an annual basis).

Southend University Hospital has a responsibility to provide various Statutory and Mandatory training opportunities and to ensure that staff remain compliant in the specified topics.

Statutory training is required to ensure that the Trust is meeting any legislative duties. Mandatory training is an organisational requirement to limit risk and maintain safe working practice.

So what do you do first? You must attend a Welcome day in your six weeks of starting work at Southend University Hospital.

Your line manager will work with you to ensure you have your Local Induction completed within your first 6 months of employment here at the Trust.

During your first year you must also complete the statutory and mandatory training sessions that were not You'll be able to see your specific covered in your induction.

Adult Safeguarding L1

> Is this course for me?

All staff who work directly with patients must complete the Adult Safeguarding Level 1 training every three years.

> What will I learn?

This course develops an understanding of safeguarding and the role of staff in identifying and working with vulnerable adults, as we are all responsible for the protection of vulnerable people from harm. Vulnerable adults rely on us to take the right steps to help keep them safe. This course is in two parts: Part A focuses on the safeguarding foundations with topics such as the numbers behind safeguarding, the types and indicators of abuse, influencing factors and various safeguarding alerts and disclosures.

Part B builds on the safeguarding foundations learnt in the first section, and then focuses on the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguarding (DoLS) covering the Winterbourne View, polices and relevant legislation as well as the safeguarding procedures.

All clinical staff excluding Consultants are required to complete this training every three years.

> What will I learn?

To provide an overview of the principles of safeguarding vulnerable adults, including knowledge of matters such as the Mental Capacity Act , Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and the Southend, Essex and Thurrock safeguarding adults processes and procedures.

Blood Collection > Is this course for me?

All staff requiring access to the blood fridge to collect blood products especially permanent TSWs, HCAs and porters. The training should be attended every two years to remain certified for security access to the blood bank fridge.

> What will I learn?

This course will help you gain knowledge and understanding of the need for complete traceability of blood products and the potential serious consequences for patient safety if correct procedures are not followed when removing or returning blood products. It will also cover the correct procedure for the removal/ return of blood products in accordance with the Blood Administration Policy BT-11, temperature/ storage requirements for blood products, the requirements for the collection of Flying squad blood in emergency situations as well as documentation required and the use of cold transport boxes.

As a requirement for NPSA a competency for the collection of blood products is required.

This is completed by the individual and the assessor on the ward. The competency can be found on staff intranet or contact the Transfusion practitioner and an electronic copy can be sent. Once the competency is completed, your ward manager will enter date of completion on iLearn.

> Is this course for me?

This course is for clinical staff administering blood on wards, A&E and theatres and should be repeated every two years.

> What will I learn?

This class will take you through the correct procedure for administering blood products in accordance with the Blood administration policy BT11 available on STAFFnet. It will also cover the potential serious consequences for patient safety if correct procedures are not followed when administered as well as the requirements for good documentation in blood transfusion, the importance of traceability of blood products from donor to patients and how to manage an adverse reaction to a blood product.

Child Safeguarding L1

> Is this course for me?

Level 1 Child Protection Training is for all Southend University Hospital Staff and is a mandatory requirement even if your role does not place you in direct contact with children. This training only has to be completed when you start with the Trust.

> What will I learn?

This course aims to make a positive contribution to the prevention of physical, mental and sexual abuse as well as to reduce the prevalence of neglect, in line with the current safeguarding agenda. The course will also give you a better understanding around the signs of child abuse and examples of how to deal with abuse if a child has confided in someone or if there are suspicions of problems, as well as how to take appropriate action depending on their role.

All staff, including doctors, who come into contact with children or who may come into contact with adults who are considered a risk to children are required to complete this training every three years.

> What will I learn?

This course aims to provide staff with an awareness of the legislation which deals with the protection and safeguarding issues around children alongside the National Service Framework and the local Southend, Essex and Thurrock Child Protection Procedures.

This offering will also equip staff with the skills to consider the risks to children and what they might mean in terms of home/other environments where difficulties may exist. The review of the procedures should give you the skills to complete the appropriate referral forms into Social Care or the Locality Teams for children in need or children in need of protection, as well as the contact details of staff working with Safeguarding for Children within the Acute Trust and the Social Care Teams.

The course is aimed at, paediatricians, paediatric allied health professionals, children's nurse, midwife, child psychologist, or one of the many other members of the clinical staff included in Safeguarding Children and Young People – this training must be completed every three years.

> What will I learn?

This course explores what safeguarding children means for you as a member of clinical staff working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and how you work with others to protect children and promote their health and well-being. The course will cover: key national documents and reports, concept of risk and harm, documentation, serious case review, child protection conference and meetings, impact of substance misuse/mental health on parenting, assessment and management of child protection concerns, child sexual exploitation and looked after children.

> Is this course for me?

All patient facing staff are required to complete this training every three years. After completing the full course on the first year, staff can complete the refresher there after.

> What will I learn?

This half-day training will enable staff to recognise the warning signs of a potential violent situation and to understand and be aware of different methods to prevent it from escalating - whilst maintaining personal safety and that of colleagues, patients and visitors.

> Is this course for me?

All clinical staff including trained nurses, consultants, all other doctors (who have not attended CPR Level 2, 3 or 4 training) & Cardiac Physiologists, Health Care Assistants, priority non clinical staff, MEA’s, physiotherapists and porters are required to complete this training every year.

> What will I learn?

This face to face event will take you through the recognition of deteriorating patients, tracking changes in physiology; triggering a response if there are abnormal values and role of the outreach team.

You will also learn about basic life support, the emphasis on continued chest compressions while waiting for rescue team to arrive and the use of BVM using 2 rescuers technique; as well as the recovery position, checking of the resuscitation trolley and a demonstration of the use of AED

Basic Life Support training involves physical practice and may also be slightly stressful.

Classroom: CPR Basic Life Support Level 1 Training 15

CPR Level 3 for Doctors > Is this course for me?

All doctors and consultants are required to complete this course on an annual basis

> What will I learn?

CPR Level 3 for doctors is a very intense short session covering Basic Life Support (BLS), the use of AED defibrillator, External pacing as well as going through the layout of the standard Resuscitation Trolley including the blue cardiac arrest drug box and the black peri-arrest drug box.

> How long will it take?

Duration varies between 1- 2 hours depending on how many doctors arrive..

> How to enrol New Starters are automatically enrolled onto this course and will complete this session on the afternoon of their welcome day.

> What will I learn?

The e-learning package, designed by the Royal College of Physicians, provides the knowledge you need to help to reduce falls amongst our in-patient population and know what to do if someone falls in your area. It will help you to understand the prevalence of falls and their consequences, as well as identify risk factors for falls, both patient specific and environmental.

This course is aimed primarily at Nursing staff but suitable for all clinical staff. The course is designed to complement and provide the background knowledge to support the local Falls Prevention Policy CL-13 and the Falls Trigger Tool and Care Plan paperwork.

> How long will it take?

1 hour

> How to complete This course is an online e-Learning package provided by the ‘Royal College of Physicians’. You can access this course via iLearn by visiting the Stat/Man & Core page and clicking on the ‘Falls Prevention’ button to be presented with the course content.

Please be aware that on completion of Falls Prevention e-learning you must click on module 2 and then click the e-learning button to confirm that you have completed the module in its entirety. Until the second module is complete you will not have completed the course and will therefore still be non-compliant in this discipline.

CareFall covers the safe and effective management of a patient who falls in hospital.

This makes it an ideal learning tool for junior doctors, who are often the first doctors to see a patient after a fall, and for locum doctors, who may be unfamiliar with the ward’s individual procedures.

CareFall concentrates on the key areas of knowledge for foundation doctors, including what to do after a patient falls, the relationship between medication and falls, and cardiovascular causes of falls. The tool has been developed with junior doctors and trainees, and is based on National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) and NICE guidance.

Assessment and Development centres Research demonstrates that that there is no substitute for objectively observing and systematically measuring how people actually perform ‘on the ground’.

Well designed assessment or development centres are one of the most effective tool available for assessing individuals in both individual and group based environments for recruitment and selection, talent mapping or personal development identification. > What is an assessment centre?

Assessment centres are a multi-method approach used in recruitment to support the interview process. Rather than just answering interview questions, the applicants complete a number of different assessments that are specifically designed to assess the key competencies for the role for which they are applying. Based on the selected competencies, the assessment centre provides a clear understanding of the candidate’s strengths or developmental needs and evaluates their potential.

A development centre is similar to an Assessment centre, but rather than it being used in the first stages of employment, it can be used for a range of occasions, e.g. team performance mapping, succession planning, restructuring and further professional development planning.

Using assessment centres as part of senior recruitment means that you get to see how your candidates perform under pressure and with tasks expected at the level they are applying for. Similarly development centres are great for developing your high performing teams to identify what they can benefit from next and where our top talent is currently at.

Bands 1 – 4 The wider workforce (bands 1-4) is a diverse group of staff working in all areas of the Trust, making up approximately 40% of the workforce and collectively spending approximately 60% of time delivering direct patient care.

Our staff in bands 1-4 can enjoy specially designed courses, celebration events, webinars and much much more specific to the needs of the individual on request.

The Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) induction programme is a great example of bands 1-4 development at its best. Delivered by a wide range of trainers from across the Trust, our Healthcare Support Workers are able to learn about key topics in a classroom environment, whilst networking with their peers and subject matter leads across the Trust.

The Bands 1- 4 Celebration Day is your chance to reward your hard working and effective team members by signing them up to the offsite celebration event. This day not only allows your team members to reflect on their own achievements, but also recognise the crucial part they play in the success of Southend. Feedback Facilitation & Psychometric Profiling > Psychometric profiles Psychometric profiling is the use of a model to understand what drives a particular individual’s behaviour. Using the metaphor of an iceberg, profiling looks beneath the surface and helps us to understand an individual’s personality. It works by getting an individual to complete a questionnaire the answers to which are compared in a systematic way to a mass of data from other people who have answered the same questions.

Psychometric profiling is often used in recruitment to understand an individuals drivers, behaviours or team focus, however, it can also be used in a number of purposes including: • Coaching • Leadership development • Personal development • Self-awareness • Talent management • Team development 73

> 360 degree feedback 360 degree feedback is a powerful tool to help individuals identify where their leadership strengths and development needs lie. The process includes getting confidential feedback from line managers, peers and direct reports for the creation of a personalised leadership mapping document.

Through a facilitated session with a qualified feedback facilitator, participants gain an insight into other people’s perceptions of their leadership abilities and behaviour.

If you enrol on the Ernest Shackleton or Ellen MacArthur leadership programmes a 360 feedback report is included in your course. IT Training

New offering 2016

Across Southend University Hospital we use over 179 different clinical and nonclinical IT systems every day - that number is ever growing which is why our IT training is evolving during 2016. > The interim phase On the completion of our new IT training offering, our staff will be able to gain access to the systems, and the knowledge they need to use those systems, far quicker than ever before. Training will be accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week by a mixture of e-Learning; Podcasts and “Go to” Guides.

However, we are currently in a transition phase and the Learning & Organisational Development team, specifically Evan Flockhart, working with both internal and external subject matter experts to get your online resources up and running.

Until the e-Learning resources are available, sign off for new staff will be by manager for any new starters, with retrospective completion of the relevant e-Learning package as they become available as follows 1. Managers/Ward Managers will be responsible for ensuring a user has been trained by a member of existing staff and read the currently available training material.

2. Managers/Ward Managers must approve access to a system for new staff members by logging a call on the IT Self Service Portal.

3. Staff members will retrospectively be asked to complete the e-Learning course as it becomes available.

4. Any member of staff requiring training should approach their line manager.

5. Line Managers with questions about the self-service portal part of the process should contact the IT Helpdesk.

6. Once e-Learning is available this will be advertised and published on iLearn.

On boarding The Southend hospital welcome day is our first opportunity to really greet our new starters and begins the 6 month local induction process owned by the new starters line manager.

> What is it and why do it?

Why do we need to on-board our new starters effectively? The simple answer is that if we want our new starters to stay for more than a few months we need to make them feel wanted, we need to help them orientate quickly to their new environment and we need to help them become fully productive as soon as possible.

> Local Induction The Local Induction is the essential information and training that new starters should receive which is specific to their role and department. It also includes probationary meetings, appraisal objective setting, policy reading, orientation to the place of work and so much more.

If we don’t do this there is a very good chance of them leaving to join another organisation. Not something we want to happen when we have just spent a lot of time, money and effort recruiting the best person for the job…

This is the really vital part of the whole on boarding process, get it right and you have a strong chance that your new starter will be a great asset to the team for years to come.

This whole process of welcoming and keeping our new starters is called on boarding.

The Local Induction Checklist for Permanent Staff provided detailed guidance on all the information and actions common to all new starters that must be covered. Remember you will need to add any department specific elements.

On boarding has 3 distinct phases that all need to work together to help your new-starter become fully part of the Southend Team.

“I started in the Trust in 1995 as a volunteer whilst studying for a 1 year full-time college course.

After this I got a job as a rehab assistant and in 1998 I started to study for a degree in Occupational Therapy. I would work for 3 days a week and the other 2 days I spent at University for 4 years.

By my 4th year I was an acting OT, yet I still applied for a job in the Hospital once I qualified - I was delighted to receive a 1st.

From here I went out into the community and worked my rotations. I found my passion was in Neurology and I became involved with setting up the Trusts Stroke Unit. My specialism here took me to a band 6, and then a band 7.

In 2008 I took a 9 month secondment as Service Manager for Rehab. I then went into my next role which Deputy Head of Rehab.

After restructuring of the department my current role is rehab service manager in outpatients. I have always taken pride in my CPD and even now in my current role I get involved with the role of an occupational therapist.�

Catherine Kimber Therapeutic Radiographer “I studied BTEC health and social care level 3 at college and knew I wanted to work within the NHS, I found a job advertised for a radiotherapy trainee assistant.

I did some research and found it really interesting; I went for the interview and was offered the job.

I was informed that I would be training within Southend Hospital NHS Trust Radiotherapy Department and would be academically trained by City University London, who has a close connection with the department. I was a trainee assistant for 2 years while completing my Foundation Degree in HealthCare Radiotherapy Practice.

After which I took a year out from training and developed my knowledge and skills within the department. I was then able to complete my Radiotherapy degree while working as an assistant, with the same university in order to become a qualified Therapeutic Radiographer. My tuition was sponsored by the hospital for all 4 years of my degree, I was able to apply for a job at Southend Hospital NHS Trust and be successful enough to work here as a qualified band 5 Radiographer. I had started out as a band 2, on completion of the foundation degree I became a band 5.”

> Clinical development pathway If you would like a career as a nurse or other registered professional the steps you need to take are outlined below. > 3 Months Complete all statutory mandatory training and Trust HCA induction > 6 Months Achieve all Trust set competencies in your role and functional skills > 24 Months Complete a level 2/3 apprenticeship in health and social care > 4 Years Apply and be selected to study for a foundation degree 79

> Clinical pathways into professional development If you are interested in applying for a sponsored degree course you will need to contact Julie Coleman, Lead Nurse Practice Development / Education Liaison Manager.

You will have to pass a numeracy and literacy test and have an interview.

If you are successful you will undertake a two year work based learning programme to achieve the ‘Associate Practitioner/Foundation’ degree status by attending university for one day a month.

If you already have a foundation degree and support of the Clinical Director you can do the work based PreRegistered Nurse programme where you attend University for 2 days a week for 18 months and will have a BSc at the end of it.

The programme is delivered primarily in the workplace with placements being arranged for the two study/student days a week. There will be a requirement to have three to four six-week block placements to enable the course to be compliant with NMC requirements.

Practice Development The Practice Development Team work to enable and inspire staff to provide quality care, role model professional practice, encourage staff to work in a patient focused manner and create an environment where life long learning is embraced.

As our Education Liaison Manager, Julie Coleman has the responsibility for commissioning and managing the Trust’s Non-Medical Education contract.

Within each Clinical Directorate or profession there is an Education Lead and these individuals have responsibility for submitting a yearly investment plan identifying the education /development requirement as well as the needs of the service.

In the past, the Trust received funding for Non-Medical Education through two different funding streams, Multi Professional Education and Training (MPET) and the Non-Medical Student Tariff (NMST). The MPET investment is provided

by Health Education East of England (HEEoE) and is allocated based upon the number of staff (non-medical) in post, the data is provided by the Trust utilising Electronic Staff Records (ESR).

> Newly Qualified Nurses Programme At Southend University Hospital we run a comprehensive newly qualified nurses program. It is tailored to support those people who have recently joined the register, to assist in their transition from being a student to an accountable practitioner. A preceptor will be available to coach, assist and assess your progress.

The funds are for the Non-Medical workforce for the development of staffs clinical skills, knowledge, and expertise to enable staff to deliver key priorities within the organisation and in response to individual and service requirements.

The Trust is required to submit an investment plan each year which must reflect service delivery and workforce needs as well as linking within Trust objectives, professional group priorities and service requirements.

The Non–medical tariff is provided by Health Education East of England based upon non-medical pre-registration students placed within the Trust. Value of the tariff has been based on WTE students placed within the Trust. We currently receive tariff based upon the pre-registration students the Trust accepts from Essex HEI’s. There are specific criteria that determine how both MPET and NMST can be spent.

The investment plan is developed following consultation with Education leads for the professional groups, respective business units and specialist department who identify the courses and training required by their department following a local training needs analysis (TNA).

Opportunities for staff development are available to all staff across bands 1-9.

Anyone wishing to access further development or for advice of support should in the first instance contact their line manager. The Education Leads for Clinical Directorate are also available as well as the Trust Education Liaison Manager.

Simulation Suite New for 2016, our state of the art clinical simulation suite is set up to replicate an acute care NHS environment, providing realistic clinical facilities for our clinical staff in an environment that is authentic and clinically challenging.

Southend University Hospital Simulation Suite provides a realistic clinical environment in which health care professionals can develop and practice clinical and non- technical skills.

The suite resembles a hospital environment and has a high fidelity adult patient mannequin, this flexible environment will allow the development of a variety of clinical scenarios which will be applicable to all specialities and disciplines.

Healthcare teams can utilise the simulation suite to “work� together to manage a clinical situation, this will enhance inter-professional learning and collaboration.

The staff survey questionnaire is open Sept-Nov every year.

The NHS Staff Survey is the largest survey of staff opinion in the UK and may be the largest in the world. Each year NHS Staff are offered the opportunity to give their views on the range of their experience at work. Directors and managers then work with their HR business partners and L&OD consultants to make a difference to our working world here at Southend.

> The results are in Despite the consistently high service demands, I was really pleased to see that our engagement rate for the staff survey this year increased from the 43% (2014) to 46% (2015).

On the surface, staff engagement may seem like one challenge too many or a luxury that can no longer be afforded; when actually the reverse is true. Improved staff engagement and in particular greater involvement of staff is a key ingredient to tackling almost all of the challenges that the NHS is currently facing - for example, better staff engagement has been shown to have a clear impact on retention and therefore needs to part of our directorates recruitment and retention strategy.

So how does the staff survey help improve staff engagement?

Well, every autumn the staff survey takes place and our leaders should do everything they can to encourage participation as the survey is a key indicator of staff opinion, it provides a wealth of data that we can use and it is also used by the CQC as part of its inspection process.

It is always difficult for staff to take time out to fill in the survey however it is really important to us to find out their views.

Using the results from the staff survey, managers can really begin to make a difference for their team.

The Health and Social Care Apprenticeship Diploma at level 2 is for those working in a Health or Social Care setting. It is designed for all workers who support adults of any age, in any setting.

> What will they study?

An apprenticeship is a work based learning programme. The apprenticeship is made up of a set of qualifications referred to as a framework. There are five components to an apprenticeship framework.

Meet the Executive Team > Sue Hardy, RGN, RM, MSc Chief Executive Sue joined the Trust in April 2011 from Northampton General Hospital where she was Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Patient Services. Sue is a committed champion for delivering a positive patient experience with a clear focus on achieving transparent 'board to ward' engagement and is dedicated to ensuring that our patients continue to receive the best possible care in a safe environment.

> Jon Findlay Chief Operating Officer Jon joined us as chief operating officer in January 2014, coming back to his roots as he began his NHS career here in 1987. Jon has had experience at Basildon, Dartford, Whipps Cross and Guy’s hospitals. Jon is pleased to have returned to Southend and enjoys being able to have a direct influence on patient care.

> Yvonne BlĂźcher Chief Nurse and Director of Infection Prevention and Control (DIPC) Yvonne joined the Trust as Chief Nurse in October 2015 from Barts where she was Deputy Chief Nurse for Quality and Governance. Yvonne is a Fellow of the Institute of Health Improvement and has a real passion for engaging staff to ensure patients get the best possible outcomes.

> James O'Sullivan Chief Financial Officer and Senior Information Risk Officer (SIRO) James joined the Trust as Chief Financial Officer in April 2014. James doesn't just see finance as number crunching. For him it's about supporting and empowering people to do things that make a difference.

Meet the executive team > Neil Rothnie, MS, FRCS Medical Director and Clinical Safety Officer Neil joined Southend as Consultant General Surgeon in 1994 and was appointed Medical Director in December 2012. He established the Specialist Breast Unit at Southend and developed the ‘Open Access' Hernia Service. He is the Director of Screening for South Essex Breast Screening Service and Lead Clinician for Breast Services.

He has spent 16 years as the surgical lead to the Regional Quality Assurance team for the NHS Breast Screening Programme and has chaired the National Breast Screening Audit for the last five years.

> Jan China, MBA, MSc, BSc, RGN Director of Estates and Facilities Jan has committed her entire working career to the NHS. Jan’s focus is on improving the patient environment and ensuring that we have a hospital that gives our clinical teams the support needed to deliver modern day treatments.

> Mary Foulkes Director of Organisational Development and Human Resources Mary joined us as Director of Organisational Development and Human Resources in January 2015. Her career spans the private, public and third sector and includes previous NHS experience as Human Resources Director for East London NHS Foundation Trust.

She is committed to improving staff engagement, which in turn will have a positive impact on the quality of patient care.

We are each aligned to different areas of the business and bring our own areas of expertise to Southend Hospital. We are here to listen, advise and support you through the difficulties that present themselves within the most challenging times of NHS delivery. > Emma Nicholls Emma is the newest member of our team as she started in November 2015. Emma brings with her a wealth of private sector learning and change management experience from her previous employment within the Energy sector. As our new head of learning & OD Emma is focusing on learning across the Trust and improving efficiencies in relation to our Stat/Man training.

> Marion Cain Marion is the longest serving Learning and OD consultant with nearly a decade of Trust experience. Prior to joining Southend, Marion worked in the private sector for insurance leaders, Aviva.

Marion is aligned to Women’s & Children and the MSK directorates and is currently the point of contact for Medicine and Surgery.

Passionate about staff wellbeing Marion leads on the 91 staff survey implementations.

> Evan Flockhart Evan joined the Trust as one of the L&OD consultants back in 2010 following his employment at the London Olympics. Evan has a wealth of leadership experience from both the public and private sectors, including 19 years in the Royal Air Force.

Evan is aligned to estates & facilities and the corporate directorates and leads on eLearning creation here at Southend.

> Nic Girvan Nic joined the team as one of the Learning & OD Consultants back in 2011. She brings with her a range of both private and public sector Learning & OD experience from utility giant E.ON, community services provider SEPT and the acute Trust Basildon hospital. Nic is aligned to the D&T directorate and leads on digital learning across the Trust with a real focus on video development and podcast creation.

The iLearn team Not only are our iLearn team are dedicated to the development and smooth running of our online learning environment, they also as oversee the Stat/Man Training Coordination by scheduling training dates, booking venues and importing the e-Learning completions from external sites.

> Joanne Bright – iLearn System manager Joanne is the iLearn Systems Manager who oversees the iLearn Team as well as iLearn system developments. Being with the hospital for a number of years, Joanne has worked across a wide range of roles, meaning she brings not only a breadth of digital insight but also awareness of the front line roles out in the Trust.

> Samantha Barton – iLearn Training Coordinator Samantha Barton is one of our iLearn Coordinators and is the lead scheduler for the Newly Qualified Nurses programme. Sam brings a range of data focused experiences to her current role and joined the Trust from her previous employment working in the Fraud Department for the Royal Bank of Scotland. Samantha is very experienced when it comes to iLearn and the creation of its portal pages.

> Natalie Hopkins – iLearn Training Coordinator Natalie Hopkins is the most recent addition to the iLearn team bringing with her a range of experience from NHS Recruitment, Google and Objective production. One of Natalie’s main skills is that she is very creative and is currently applying that to the IT toolkit developments.

> Michelle Hunter – iLearn Training Coordinator Michelle has worked at the Trust for 11 years, mostly in Outpatients before her move to the iLearn team. Michelle is very skilful at using iLearn and sorting out customer problems. Michelle also the lead co-ordinator for the Healthcare Support Worker programme on behalf of the Practice Development team.

Talent for care Our Talent for Care co-ordinator is on a mission to engage upcoming new talent into apprenticeships roles here at Southend.

> Eileen Gallagher Eileen is our Talent for Care Coordinator. She started working at the Trust in June 2014 working with the iLearn team. In August 2015 she took up the role that she has now .Eileen brings many skills to the team bringing ‘Talent for Care’ to life here at Southend as well as developing the apprentice programme.

> Abbeygale’s Apprentice Experience My name is Abbeygale Haynes and I am 16 years old. I finished school in June 2015 and I wanted to undertake an apprenticeship in Business Administration when I finished school, so I started applying as soon as I left.

> Abbeygale Haynes Abbeygale Haynes is our first administrator apprentice in L&OD. She has just joined the team fresh out of school and is gaining her experience across the teams of HROD.

I applied for many Business Administration apprenticeships on the National Apprenticeship website. I applied for the role as L&OD Administrator in August 2015. I attended the interview in September 2015 . To prepare for the interview, I researched about the NHS to see what they do. The interview went really well and later that day they phoned me offering me the role.

My first day at work was on the 9th September 2015 and I am learning new things every day. Some of the things I have learnt include how to book rooms in the Education Centre, adding events into the correct L&OD Consultants dairies and organising the Edward Jenner + and Ernest Shackleton Leadership training sessions.

In addition to the Learning and OD Team support, I have also been working in a number of different departments across Human Resources, for example the Recruitment team and on the IT Helpdesk.

I haven’t been working here for very long but I am enjoying my time here as the staff are lovely and really helpful.

Practice Development Responsible for our staff’s clinical development, our Practice Development team are responsible for a number of trust wide learning opportunities, including the healthcare support worker programme, student placements and the newly qualified nurses through their proctorship period.

> Julie Coleman Julie is one of our most renowned leaders here at Southend University Hospital having worked with the Trust for 30 years. Having both a nursing background as well as practice education experience Julie’s role as Lead Practice Nurse means that she has plenty of knowledge about the hospital, it’s people and the educational needs here at the Trust.

Holding the purse strings for our university spends, Julie is the lady to speak to if you are seeking external clinical development as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

> Sally Ashdown Sally is one of our Practice Development Nurses here at Southend University Hospital.

Before joining the Practice Development team, Sally worked as a nurse on the wards, an IT trainer and a Manual Handling Instructor – with all of this experience (and having been with the Trust since 1983) there is little Sally doesn’t know and she uses this knowledge to support our newly qualified nurses and university students settle into the Trust.

> Fiona Sommerville Coming from a background of Post-Op recovery, Theatre and the Trauma unit, Fiona is now working as one of our Practice Development Nurses teaching clinical skills and supporting our new nurses. During her years in the Trust, Fiona has a number of skills and capabilities under her belt including Airway Management and Acute Care.

Medical Education Promoting continuous professional development for all grades of doctors and providing careers support and guidance. The Medical Education team promote multi-professional education by working closely with the non-medical education team. They also offer placements to medical students from London medical schools and work-shadowing opportunities to local school students hoping to pursue medical careers

> Henna Jaleel – Director of Medical Education Henna has been a consultant at Southend University Hospital since 2002, where she has worked her way through a number of different roles including governance lead for medicine. Henna’s time at present is split between two roles, the first being a consultant for sexual health and the second being the director of medical education.

> Katie Palmer – Medical Education Manager Katie is the Trust’s Medical Education Manager and has been working here at Southend University Hospital for the past ten years. Prior to joining the world of Medical Education, Katie worked in the city as the Manager for a Recruitment Consultancy.

> Pam Barton – Posts and Placements Medical Education Pam is responsible for Quality Assessment of Post-Graduate Education and Trainee Support

> Sue Wilkinson – Foundation Programme Coordinator Sue supports our Foundation Doctors and is responsible for administrating professional leave applications.

> Lisa Hollebone – GPST Programme Coordinator Lisa is the first point of contact for GP trainees and is responsible for administrating programme placements.

> Gill Parsons – Undergraduate Administrator Gill provides administrative support for all medical students on placement at Southend University Hospital, ensuring that training and educational needs are met.

> Jo Warwick – Medical Education Administrator Jo organises the GP Refresher course and the weekly F1, F2, Medical ST1/ST2 and grand round teaching programmes

> Halina Riseley – Medical Education Administrator Halina is responsible for study leave, organising monthly GP mini-master classes and administration support for the Southend Medical and Dental Society.

> George Lilley - Medical Education Assistant George supports the whole team with administration tasks, he is also responsible for updating attendance from teaching sessions and events on iLearn.

Library Services The Southend University Trust library team are dedicated to supporting the information needs of both clinical and non-clinical Trust members, health and social care staff working within the South Essex community and students on hospital placements. > Karen Morgan Karen is our Library and Knowledge Manager (Athens Administrator) who comes from a background of the Department of Health and Scientific Studies, Karen helps library users to brush up on their research searching skills, perform literature searches on specific subjects and if you would like some training, a refresher session on literature searching using healthcare databases, or a literature search conducted on your behalf, Karen is the lady to help you.

> Alison Cairns - Assistant Librarian (Marketing and Outreach) Alison has worked in public libraries for several years and is enjoying the challenge and interest of new experiences in the library at Southend Hospital. Her role is to help people find out more about the library and the variety of services we provide. She would love to come to you, where you are, to share with you how the library can help you in your day to day work, research etc. If you would like to invite her to a staff meeting or find out more please contact her.

> Emma Silvey - Assistant Librarian (Resources) Emma comes to the Trust fresh from University with a firm desire to develop her career in NHS librarianship. Emma’s role is to ensure that the collection is current and evidence based, reflecting the needs of its users, and she would welcome recommendations from staff for new resources.

> Katie Gladwell - Library Assistant Katie worked in a public library for 14 years before making a complete career change and joining the Technical Services Unit at Southend Hospital Pharmacy. Katie is now enjoying being part of the Education Centre Library team and would love to assist you with any enquiries you may have - large or small!

> Danny Marden Library Assistant Danny works with encyclopaedic knowledge of the library stock (and a lot of other stuff), Danny can be of assistance to you regarding any issue relating to general enquiries, book loans and renewals.

> Root Cause Analysis Training This training event will be provided by the Risk & Patient Safety Team and the Trust’s panel firm of Solicitors, Browne Jacobson and facilitated by Lucy Reid, expert in Risk Management, Governance and Root Cause Analysis in the Primary and Public Sector.

The training is aimed at Consultants, Doctors, Nurses and Support Staff at all levels and will familiarise participants with the theory and explore the tools needed, to conduct Root Cause Analysis with thoroughness and credibility. The workshop is scenario based and allows for plenty of practice in small groups.

> Complaints Training This training focuses on improving the handling, investigation, resolution and learning from complaints here at Southend University Hospital. Participants will learn about improving complaints standards and complaints handling, enhancing communications and information on the wards, responding to patient concerns, as well as ensuring the process of complaints handling is integral to ensuring that we are Professional and Accountable.
