Brand new £1 million HDU to enhance patient care

Southend Hospital is expanding its critical care facility to provide for the very first time, a purpose built high-dependency unit (HDU) for patients who need extra care. It will strengthen the service the hospital provides to those who need additional care, but do not need intensive care. It will also help improve patient safety and the patient experience at the Trust. The £1 million state-of-theart facility opens this spring

and will support patients from all specialities who need a higher level of care than can be provided on the speciality wards. Gill Donohue, Senior Nurse and Lecturer Practitioner for the Critical Care Unit, said: “We know that by providing high dependency care we can improve patient care within Southend Hospital and potentially prevent patients from requiring intensive care. “This is an exciting new venture for all the critical care staff. Both medical and

OBITUARY
Ron Kennedy, a former Non-Executive Director and governor of Southend Hospital, has died, aged 85. Ron held many positions in public life: he was chairman of Essex County Council; labour spokesperson on children, youth and family; a member of the Community Health Council; and chairman of Southend Hospital charitable funds. Alan Tobias OBE, Chairman of Southend University Hospital, said: “Ron was incredibly passionate about healthcare and gave many valuable years of care and guidance to our hospital. We’re humbled and immensely grateful to Ron for the time and dedication he has given to the hospital. “Ron was heavily involved with the fundraising campaign for the hospital’s leukaemia unit between 1998 and 2000...” CONTINUED PAGE 2
