Southend Hospital is expanding its critical care facility to provide for the very first time, a purpose built high-dependency unit (HDU) for patients who need extra care.

It will strengthen the service the hospital provides to those who need additional care, but do not need intensive care. It will also help improve patient safety and the patient experience at the Trust.

Gill Donohue, Senior Nurse and Lecturer Practitioner for the Critical Care Unit, said: “We know that by providing high dependency care we can improve patient care within Southend Hospital and potentially prevent patients from requiring intensive care.

“This is an exciting new venture for all the critical care staff. Both medical and

nursing staff have worked closely with the architect and project team so we know we will have a fantastic environment to work in and have new equipment to ensure we provide the very best for our patients.”

OBITUARY

Ron Kennedy, a former Non-Executive Director and governor of Southend Hospital, has died, aged 85.

Ron held many positions in public life: he was chairman of Essex County Council; labour spokesperson on children, youth and family; a member of the Community Health Council; and chairman of Southend Hospital charitable funds.

Alan Tobias OBE, Chairman of Southend University Hospital, said: “Ron was incredibly passionate about healthcare and gave many valuable years of care and guidance to our hospital. We’re humbled and immensely grateful to Ron for the time and dedication he has given to the hospital.

“Ron was heavily involved with the fundraising campaign for the hospital’s leukaemia unit between 1998 and 2000...”

“It was only fitting that Ron was the recipient of a lifetime achievement award at our annual Hospital Heroes awards ceremony that very same year. Ever a true gentleman and a genuinely nice man, he will be

much missed, but his legacy continues.”

Recognising achievement Do you have a volunteer in your ward or department who does a marvellous job?

Well, now’s the time to get your nomination in for the annual Volunteer Achievement Awards, the Trust’s small way of saying thank-you.

Eligible volunteers must have worked for the hospital for some time (usually over five years) and have provided outstanding service via fundraising, voluntary service or any other exceptional contribution to the work of the hospital.

There are two categories, individuals or group.

Nominations can be submitted by hospital staff, volunteers or members of the public.

Deadline for nominations is Friday 20 April. The winners will be honoured at a special afternoon tea being held on Thursday 7 June from 3pm at the Saxon Hall, Aviation Way, Southend.

away from home during the war, seven year-old Ron had to grow up quickly to help look after his younger brother and sister.

Having joined British Rail in 1947, Ron stayed with

the organisation until 1996 – almost half a century of service – except for two years’ National Service! He rose from engine cleaner and fireman all the way to engine driver. Ron drove many trains including the world famous Flying Scotsman and was invited to take part in the train’s inaugural run in 2016.

Ron is survived by his wife, Marlene, two daughters and his grandsons.

Our group of hospitals have been selected as a pilot site to implement a new way of working which promises to enhance patient flow, drive efficiency and help us deliver better care to our patients– whilst also reducing the time spent on admin tasks, allowing clinical staff to spend more time with patients.

The TeleTracking system is already used in acute hospitals in both the UK and the United States, and is helping site managers monitor what’s happening with patients in more than 350,000 acute care beds across the sites where it is used.

The system uses Information Technology as an enabler to support, improve and embed best practice, such as the SAFER principles. Using data from existing systems, TeleTracking presents all the information a site manager needs to know about bed availability in real time – including what might be preventing a patient from being discharged, such as a missing section 5 or delayed ‘to take away drugs’ (TTA).

The system will allow us to better address the familiar issues of: • A patient remaining in a bed when they shouldn’t be – for

example awaiting transport or TTAs; • Beds becoming available without the site team being aware; • Beds that are empty but awaiting cleaning; • Beds that are empty and clean but not allocated to a patient.

TeleTracking will also offer a new approach to addressing bed-cleaning through automated alerts to the housekeeping team triggered by a patient being discharged as well as making the best use of the time and skills of our portering teams.

The key to the success

of TeleTracking is pulling together all clinical and nonclinical teams that should be working together and bringing operational management into one place.

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which has more than 800 beds and over 600,000 yearly A&E attendances, adopted the system in 2015 and quickly saw the benefits. In 2015/16 the Trust opened no additional ‘winter pressure’ beds in comparison to the 50 beds it had used in previous years. The Trust also reduced the number of outliers by 70 per cent and now have a bed turnover time of 35 minutes – that’s from a patient being discharged from the ward to a new patient arriving in that newly-cleaned bed.

The real-time data available from TeleTracking presents real opportunities for our Trusts to work together to implement a system and anew way of working that will have a positive, rapid and significant impact on both patients and staff. This new system will be delivered prior to our ‘winter pressure’ period in 2018/19.

Guardian service is a success to ‘speak up’ about The independent and confidential Guardian Service has been on hand to help staff with a range of workrelated concerns since it was launched three months ago.

And it has proved to be quite the success.

June-Anne Murray (pictured), Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, said: “We have received 24 concerns which has involved a total of 83 contacts via email, telephone and face-to-face.

It is encouraging to see that staff are using the service and that Southend Hospital deals with concerns as they arise. We have helped a number of people raise issues directly with their line manager without the need for escalation. This more informal approach improves working relationships.”

The Guardian Service is an independent, confidential

and non-judgemental organisation which listens to staff, providing them with support and helping them decide how to proceed.

June-Anne added: “Where staff have asked us to escalate on their behalf, the Trust has given a detailed response. The majority of concerns raised have been issues relating to bullying and harassment, matters arising from policies and procedures and inappropriate behaviour.

It is important that the Trust responds to concerns in a timely manner as this results in staff feeling confident in speaking up and knowing that their issues will be dealt with.”

Medical Ambulatory Care is bigger and better than ever Our Medical Ambulatory unit, co-located with the Trauma Assessment Centre on Dowsett Ward, is providing a more comprehensive service to benefit patients, with new consultants, new clinical pathways and a new model of care having launched in February.

The new way of working sees staff in the unit pulling patients through from the Emergency Department, GPs and, in future, from wards.

The foundation of ambulatory care is to treat and stabilise patients who are able to walk and then

move them quickly out of the department, and this is enabled by using clinical pathways for specific conditions, such as cellulitis or heart rhythm abnormalities.

The team are about to introduce new clinical pathways that will allow patients with more medical conditions to benefit from ambulatory treatment.

Giselle Carter-Sandy, General Manager for Acute Medicine of the medical ambulatory service, said: “The unit has really developed over the past six months and is offering a rapid and safe

alternative for patients who would have been admitted to hospital in the past.

“By developing these new pathways we can expand this option to patients with conditions like painless jaundice, hypoglycaemia, upper GI bleed, pleural effusion and anaemia – it can provide a much better experience for patients.”

The pathways allow advanced nurse practitioners to start treatments for patients, and these specialists can also make arrangements for patients who need to be admitted to the hospital for

In addition, the consultantled medical navigator service provides guidance for GPs, ensuring patients being referred to the service can receive the right investigations with their GP ready for assessment once they arrive at the hospital.

Dr Alfred Fawole, Acute Consultant, said: “We’re really linking up assessment and treatment for patients from the moment they see their GP right through into the hospital and then back to their homes or onto a hospital ward.

“It’s a great innovation that provides quick and effective assessment and treatment, and we’re looking forward to introducing more pathways and hospital outpatient treatment clinics soon.”

Reboot for Red2Green and SAFER Over the next few months the Trust will be relaunching and rolling out best practice for SAFER and Red2Green.

The aim of embedding a standardised process across the hospital is to empower ward staff and support the implementation of the new TeleTracking system (see page 2) Tania Woolard, Quality & Improvement Lead, said: “As a hospital we are seeing an ever increasing demand upon our services. To enable to us to continue to provide excellent care for our patients and to ensure they have a positive experience, we are looking at ways to reduce length of stay and increase discharges.

rates, while also reducing deconditioning.”

Tania will first be working closely with Eleanor Hobbs, Westcliff and Rochford wards to embed the changes.

This will enable data and metrics to be gathered, showcasing the benefits of using a standardised approach across wards.

Ward Champions are also on board, leading their teams in bringing about change to benefit their patients.

The key to success is multidisciplinary working and excellent communication between staff and with patients, and central to this is the board round.

Tania explained, “Standardising the board round format empowers ward teams to talk about patient

outcomes earlier in the day, between 8am and 10am.

This is about asking just four key questions; WHAT are we doing today for the patients, WHO is doing it, WHEN are they doing it by, and WHY? “This helps us to identify blocks as part of our Red2Green work, and to really look at whether a patient needs to stay in hospital, or if they could go home and then return for outpatient tests and treatments.”

This renewed drive to embed best practice includes teaching across all disciplines and using audit tools to measure success.

Ward managers now receive a ‘Red2Green’ email every day that highlights common reasons for delays in patients’

treatment or discharge on the previous day, and helps wards to plan and reduce delays in the future.

Tanya said: “We want to understand and talk about delays, share lessons learned and discuss how we can overcome issues that we have in common. Just as importantly we want to celebrate our successes and highlight where really good practice is happening.

“Our Ward Champions will be sharing good news and feeding success stories back to their colleagues, and I’m hoping some of us will be tweeting our highlights as well. We’ve got the tools, so it’s up to us now to work together and further improve our patients’ experience at Southend.”

The ‘Your Care in the Best Place’ consultation currently taking place across mid and south Essex has been extended with responses now being accepted up to and including Friday March 23 2018.

The consultation was launched on 30 November 2018 following approval from the Joint Committee of the five Clinical Commissioning Groups and had been due to close on March 9 2018.

The decision to allow a further two weeks to receive responses comes following feedback from the public and

stakeholders that more time to formulate responses would be helpful for those attending planned consultation activities in the final week.

The consultation is seeking responses to outline plans for the future of health and care services, in particular specialist care services provided by the three main hospitals.

Care certificates help show real HCA promise Care certificates were recently handed out to the latest group of Health Care Assistants (HCA) who had completed their studies, with Director of Nursing, Denise Townsend, on presenting duties.

The certificate recognises all the hard work HCAs do for patients at Southend Hospital, in completing the 15 standards of the Care Certificate. It’s the minimum training, supervision and assessment that all health care workers now receive as part of their induction when joining the Trust, and is also being offered to existing staff.

One of those collecting their certificate was Ben Quinn, who has been an HCA since June 2017. This is his first care role and previously the 20 year old worked at Basildon Hospital doing maintenance.

World Kidney Day takes place on Thursday 8 March and aims to raise awareness of the importance of kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the number and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems.

“Getting this certificate is a good achievement for me as it really fits my job role in the acute medical unit and I’ve learnt so much since I started here. Lots of new skills and the certificate was just

a part of that. Everyone has just been so supportive and it gives me opportunities to progress further in my career, such as in nursing.

“Becoming an HCA has given me a real grounding and opportunities to progress.”

Danielle Ball is a stroke supervisor on the stroke unit, a role she has held for just

over a year, with eight years on the stroke ward in total.

She explained what she got out of studying the certificate.

She said: “It’s making me think again of what I’m doing and why on a day to day basis, making you think and write down what is important. It’s been great to come together as a group with all our different experience.

“So to have one question and have so many different answers and approaches is really interesting and gives us all a far more rounded perspective.”

The HCAs could now go on to complete an apprenticeship and then progress to become an Associate Practitioner by completing a Foundation Degree in Nursing. This initial certificate gives them a huge boost as they progress their careers towards becoming qualified nurses.

It might be tricky lighting candles at the top of the Southend Hospital tower block, but this year marks the fifth anniversary of the Tackle the Tower abseil challenge, which during that time has seen 236 people rise – or perhaps that should be descend – to the 154 ft challenge.

That’s a total height of 36, 344 feet, or the equivalent to almost 25 Empire State Buildings, which has seen

over £85,000 raised for around 30 different wards and departments. So, are you up for the challenge in 2018?

This year’s event takes place on Saturday 12 May and participants must be 16 or older, not that age is a barrier as previously there has been an abseiler in their 80s.

n Poppy and her mum, Debbie (left) and the Rheumatology team (above) Arthritis, it just affects the adults, right? Wrong, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) can have a life-changing impact on young people and with many initially thinking the symptoms are just growing pains it is important for diagnosis to be made as early as possible.

The Paediatric Rheumatology team at Southend Hospital recently organised an event within the unit where children with arthritis and their families could meet others of a similar age range with the same or similar conditions. All receive care at the paediatric outpatients unit, with the youngest just 18 months old.

Such events enable young patients to share their experiences and gain support from one another, as well as helping further raise awareness of the condition to mums and dads, but also to primary care providers and

schools.

One of those at the get together was Poppy Finch, 16, and her mum, Debbie.

Poppy is your typical chatty, confident teenager and you’d never know that she has a significant medical need, suffering with severe arthritis.

It continues to have quite an impact on her everyday life with constant flare ups.

Poppy said: “When people think of arthritis they think of it as in one joint, but I have it in most of mine, in my ankles, knees, shoulders, hips and spine. It stops me doing a lot of things that teenagers do, like going to parties, and means that I have to miss quite a bit of school being in hospital. For several months I was in a wheelchair. It can be quite difficult explaining it to people though, especially as much of the time it’s an illness that you can’t see.

Some people just think you are a lazy, typical teen.”

For Poppy, her arthritis started when she was just 7 and it was first thought to be growing pains. Poppy’s GP referred her to the orthopaedic team when her swollen and painful knee wasn’t eased with cold packs.

Then, Poppy was seen by the paediatric outpatients team who made the diagnosis of JIA. By the age of 10 Poppy’s arthritis had spread to her other joints, but mum Debbie was thankful that Poppy’s symptoms had been investigated and diagnosed early.

Debbie, said: “At the time it was diagnosed we hadn’t come across it before, you just don’t think your child is going to get juvenile arthritis.

The paeds team here have been amazing. It’s like an extended family; it really is our second home with the amount of time we spend in hospital.”

New mural painted Pirates, rescue helicopters, divers and buried treasure are all making paediatric outpatients at the hospital a more welcoming and exciting place for younger patients.

They all feature in an amazing nautical themed mural. It’s a design of epic proportions that takes over three walls, with the first wall featuring a pirate scene that would do any budding Jack Sparrow proud. The second wall is a more traditional

seaside beach theme full to the brim of play and activity, and thirdly an atmospheric sea rescue at night, complete with divers, a lighthouse and even a UFO! It was all brought to life one brushstroke at a time by the talented Richard Ashton, 63 from Rayleigh, who spent ten weekends bringing the vision of the paediatric unit to life. full story at : Read www.Southend.nhs.uk

She joined Southend Hospital as a way of helping develop services that will benefit her local community.

Jim Miller Sexual Health Clinic

Jim is retiring from our sexual health clinic after 13 years’ service. He has touched the hearts of many patients and staff with his empathetic manner, often dealing with distressing situations and being the bearer of bad news. He has provided a valuable service in relation to partner notification and has been instrumental in the delivery of the gay man’s clinic as well as implementing and training the HIV fingerprick test.

Jim will be sorely missed by the team for his humanistic approach to a stigmatised and vulnerable cohort of patients. We wish him a long and happy retirement in the West Country.

Stop Smoking Advisors Tell us about yourself?

Karen and I have worked within the Occupational Health & Wellbeing Department for 10 and 12 years respectively. In our spare time we enjoy similar interests such as baking, sewing and various crafts.

What does your job involve?

On a day-to-day basis we are medical secretaries as and part of a strong and supportive team. Together, we are both recognised Smoking Cessation Practitioners having completed our online NCSCT Stage 1 Assessment Training, under the support and guidance of the Southend Stop Smoking Service.

We offer a 12-week support programme to Trust staff who want to stop smoking, providing ten weeks of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products tailored to suit their individual needs. We meet with the staff member each week for the first four weeks, a crucial time following their quit date. Thereafter we will meet them every two weeks, or as required, depending of the support needed. Each week a carbon monoxide reading is undertaken to ensure that they are successful in their journey to quit smoking.

What are the best bits about your job?

Being there to support a staff member with their decision to stop smoking and seeing them through to a successful quit, whether it is for health or financial reasons.

What work achievements are you most proud of?

We are extremely proud of the support we offer to all staff members when they make the decision to stop smoking and to ensure they reach a successful conclusion. We have also received positive feedback such as ‘the support is helping to get through the cravings and I am remaining positive’, ‘I am grateful for the support I am receiving’ and ‘I am not thinking about smoking as much and I am determined to quit’.

There is a site-wide Tannoy system installed to assist with targeting the Trust’s no smoking policy. The system can be activated by calling Security Control on ext. 5560.
