Green power plant to save hospital £500k a year

>

Huge savings are set to be made from a new power plant which is now operational at the Trust.

Our Estates and Facilities team has introduced a new state-of-the-art power plant that will generate £500,000 net savings a year from 2020, helping towards the Trust’s efficiency savings and massively improve its carbon footprint.

John Henry, Director of Estates and Facilities, said: “Our on-site Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant is expected to save us a significant amount of money each year and pay back its initial cost by October 2020.

It also saves 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions – that’s like taking 1,000 cars off the roads each year.”

Heating, lighting and providing hot water for an estate the size of Southend Hospital was previously costing £1.82 million a year, and produced over 10,000 tonnes of CO2.

Both have been slashed.

Initial savings are £111,000 a year after green loan repayments and, from October 2020, will rise to £500,000.

This particular project has been over two-and-a-half years in the making with the new power station finally coming online in December

last year, which is when it also started making savings for the Trust.

Manoj Chohan, Energy Manager, said: “While families last year were putting Christmas decorations up and preparing to cook their turkeys with power from remote power stations, more than half our power was self-generated by low carbon electricity – that’s enough to power 2,900 houses a year.

provides social, economic and environmental benefits.”

Located in the Energy Centre boiler house, behind the Hospital Radio building, the only visible sign of the CHP is an 18 metres tall chimney or flue adjacent to the existing boiler chimney.

This is the ideal location for the CHP as it feeds into the same network of wires and pipes that serve A&E, the Tower Block, operating theatres, wards and offices.

Ofsted’s ‘Good’ rating for Ladybird Nursery ‘Children are motivated learners who confidently involve adults in their play’ is just one of the highlights of the latest ‘Good’ Ofsted inspection for the Trust’s Ladybird Nursery, which they described as being ‘a warm, nurturing environment for children.’

Ofsted also said that its manager, Lynda Bartholomew, ‘has a very clear understanding of the strengths and areas for development’.

Lynda said: “Running a successful and vibrant nursery such as ours is

a real team effort. Our dedicated and passionate staff put in an amazing amount of hard work, so it is wonderful to have it recognised in our ‘Good’ rating. I’d also like to thank our parents and carers for their constant support.”

The report also highlighted that ‘all children’s language is supported effectively, including those who speak English as an additional language’ and that children who attend Ladybird ‘are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.’

Merger process confirmed

This year, 5 July to be precise, marks the 70th anniversary of the National Health Service.

National plans are already underway to help celebrate this milestone and we are looking for staff and volunteers to help us celebrate and recognise the contribution the people working within the NHS have made and continue to make.

So, if you are from a long line of nurses, your family all work at Southend Hospital or have any other interesting story to tell, let us know and you could be featured in a future issue of The Look, across our social media or in the local media.

All three hospital boards across Basildon, Southend and Mid Essex have voted to support the recommendation to start the formal process to merge our organisations.

All recognised that working together formally in the longer term is crucial to help us deliver and secure safe, high quality services across all three of our hospitals.

This is separate to the outcome of the public consultation currently underway on the proposed changes to some clinical services – where the decision will be taken by the joint committee of the clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) who will decide how they commission our services based on the feedback from local people and staff.

The decision by our boards is about ensuring we have the right systems and processes in place to properly support how we work together so we can make the most of the

resources, the skills and the expertise we have available to us.

It is categorically not, as you may be hearing from elsewhere, about: • Privatising the NHS • Removing local site leadership and accountability • Changing or moving clinical services or altering the proposals in the consultation The decision is just the start of the process.

We are committed to demonstrating how this gives something better for patients in mid and south Essex and there will be lots of opportunity going forward to engage more fully and we will have more dates coming up for our regular staff briefing sessions which will be sent out via email.

STP public Consultation The Mid and South Essex Sustainability Transformation Partnership (STP) launched a formal public consultation in November to gather views and feedback from across our local communities, NHS staff and partners before a final decision is made in summer 2018.

Miniature horse brings huge joy Dogs and even cats have been known to deliver smiles and therapy to patients but, for the very first time, the hospital has welcomed a miniature horse.

Standing just 28 inches (or seven hands high) Applause, a tiny white American miniature horse aged 14, trotted to Windsor and Princess Anne wards.

Claire Buckell, Clinical Development Nurse, said: “Even on your worst day your pets can make you smile. Staff on Windsor ward were so

excited to meet Applause and introduce him to our patients.

In the past doggy therapy has proved very positive so when the opportunity came up to have a miniature horse we jumped at it. Any change to the daily routine for people who are unwell can really make a difference and Applause had such a fantastic positive impact.”

Elderly patients from both wards took the opportunity to meet and stroke Applause as he greeted them in day rooms and by their beds on side wards. Thrilled to meet the equine visitor it evoked memories of miniature horses at the fair for one, whilst another was overcome with emotion at how lovely this unique experience had been.

Amanda Poulton, Applause’s owner from Alamanda Therapy Animals, a non-funded charity staffed

by volunteers who also have their own health issues and are based in Basildon, said: “Applause is such an inquisitive mini horse who just loves to meet all sorts of people. He has been there and seen most things having visited so many people over the last 11 years that he has been doing Animal Assisted Therapy.”

No stranger to the limelight

Applause has also appeared in Prima magazine and alongside that other white haired star, Phillip Schofield on This Morning.

New year, new Ed Centre library Visitors to the Education Centre Library may have noticed that there have been some extensive changes over the last few months.

It still provides a space for staff to work and relax, complete e-learning and find resources for study and CPD, but now the library has three distinct zones, providing a range of options for staff and students to study and relax.

Informal meetings and conversation can take place in the Enquiry Zone, which the library hope to develop further with an expanded comfortable seating area.

The main area provides quiet study space and computer access, while the Quiet Study Room remains for silent study.

As well as updating the décor, these works are a step towards offering 24 hour access to the entire book collection. The final step will involve purchasing a self-service machine and additional set of gates, planned for the end of March 2018, making it a resource

staff and students can take advantage of at any time.

Karen Morgan, Library and Knowledge Manager, said: “The new zoned areas will make it easier for library users to choose their preferred environment, with different seating options and noise levels. Many

thanks to the Estates team for their invaluable support with this project; we are already receiving some fantastic feedback on the improvements.”

One of those who has fed back is Mamta Pradhan, a Specialty Doctor in the Stroke Unit who said: “It looks wonderful and we have two sections which filters the noise to the maximum making it very user friendly for students who want to achieve their goals. I’m also thrilled to see a dedicated section for research in the central section of the Library.”

Stunning Southend pics help brighten wards It’s said that a picture paints a thousand words, for the photography work of Chris Eastty, from Leigh-on-Sea, however there is just one word, wow.

Chris is an Emergency Department Assistant and a keen amateur photographer, wanted to help brighten up elderly wards and corridors at the hospital so has kindly donated his work after being approached.

Chris said: “I was a little shocked to be asked, but was more than happy to donate my images. It’s an honour to help cheer patients up and give them something different to look at rather than plain walls. It’s great to see the pieces of work up and patients and visitors taking

memories in many of our elderly patients, many who are suffering dementia. So it is a wonderful way to help bring back some of that person as they recount memories sparked by those pictures, we really can’t thank Chris enough for allowing us to display them.”

Chris’s pictures are on display on Windsor, Princess Anne and Eleanor Hobbs wards, as well as the Emergency Department. time to look at them and help spark conversation.”

effect on patients and went far beyond it giving them something nice to look at.

New version of CED portal coming soon A new version of the CED Portal will be coming to your desktop soon.

New training will be required which is built into the new portal, and users of the system will have to complete this short training before using the new portal for the first time.

Old and new portals will both be live for a month to enable everyone to switch over to the new system without affecting service.

CED has been built and designed at Southend and it is hoped that the new version will be easier to use as well as offering new features.

PACS integration has been reintroduced with the new provider, InSight.

For full integration, version 18 of the InSight client must be installed on any computers it is to be used on. Existing users of the system will automatically

have access to the new version and requests for new users can be made via the IT self-service portal or the IT Helpdesk.

The new portal includes Windows authentication, which means you will no longer require a username and password as the system takes your details from the PC you are logged into, as well as a new dashboard page with widgets allowing you to create personalised

lists of patients, wards and consultants.

The current CED portal has been in use since 2012 and contains more than 5.5 million documents allowing 85 per cent of our clinics to be noteless.

The new CED portal makes it quicker and more convenient than ever to access the information you need, so please ensure that you log in when the new portal goes live.

Cosmetic surgery isn’t something performed at Southend Hospital but you probably couldn’t help but notice that the front of the Prittlewell Building was undergoing something of a makeover recently.

The scaffolding has now been removed, repair works completed - it all looks stunning and back to its former glory, just in time for the 70th anniversary of the NHS. Perfect timing.

WELCOME TO...

Clare Burns Director of Operations for Planned and Scheduled Care Clare Burns joins the Trust with over 12 years of experience working for the NHS in community services, acute trusts and NHS England.

Caring for other people is something which Clare is very passionate about. She has worked in local care homes, social services and for Coventry City Council, working in residential care for older people.

Clare said: “As well as the welfare of our patients I’m also really keen to get to know staff – we’re so lucky that our staff really care about our hospital and I’d like to hear ideas about how they think we can improve patient care.”

Clare has worked for Princess Alexandra and Mid Essex hospitals as well as South West Essex PCT, commissioning services at Basildon and Thurrock Hospital. “I worked with Yvonne Blücher at Princess Sue Bridge Head of Human Resources Sue has worked in Human Resources for Southend Hospital for over 10 years. Her experience and knowledge of the Trust and the people that work here is invaluable.

Before joining the NHS, Sue’s career was in retail, working for Debenhams at their Head Office, where she specialised in HR and employee relations. Shortly after having her first child, Sue joined Southend Hospital

Alexandra hospital in Harlow, so I’m pleased to be working with her again.

“I’m local to Southend, I grew up here and my mother came to this hospital for a number of treatments before she sadly passed away last year.

She had dementia and she used to visit the Costa here regularly and have a cup of coffee as it was somewhere she felt comfortable.

“The hospital has been a key part of my life for many reasons and for me, my role here isn’t just another job, it’s a role I want to do and what makes it really special is the fact that it’s here.”

A self-confessed ‘foodie’, Clare spends most of her spare time cooking; her signature dish is butternut squash ravioli. Clare’s other interests include Pokémon Go and Candy Crush Saga.

Sue said: “I feel very lucky to have the chance to join the Site Leadership Team. I am always in awe of the hard work and compassion our staff show our patients and each other every day. This was clearly evident when I was recently on call.”

As the HR site lead, Sue is responsible for HR operations at Southend and works closely with MSB Group colleagues in Resourcing and People and

June joined the Trust in December 2017 bringing over 15 years of experience working within the NHS. A social worker by profession, she first joined the NHS as service manager for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Waltham Forest before working in a number of different acute providers before coming to Southend, her home town.

June said: “I am absolutely passionate about a patient’s right to high quality care and ensuring it’s made available to them when they need it. My personal drive is to deliver good quality care to the people of Southend, making a positive difference to health outcomes in my own community. My real passion is end of life care. Through challenging personal experiences I know the difference it can make when, at this time in a person’s life journey, their care is managed appropriately and in a dignified way.

“I’ve worked with Yvonne Blücher before at Barts Health and I’m really excited to be working here with you all – two main Organisational Development to ensure staff are supported to develop their careers and have the right skills to deliver high quality care. Sue said: “I like building new ways of working that will benefit our staff and enable them to provide exemplary care for our patients. The HR team are currently working on a number of projects to support engagement, retention and wellbeing.”

Sue believes that a professional and compassionate working environment is important, particularly in challenging times. “During my time here I have realised that our values need to be present

June was a Councillor for Newham Council for 12 years and understands the significance of community and staff engagement as well as the importance of service user feedback.

As well as being a West Ham supporter, once living next to the famous Boleyn Ground, June is a dedicated Game of Thrones (GoT) fan. If she could be any character in GoT June said: “I would be Daenerys Targaryen. She looks good in white!”

Successful change needs small steps, and it’s a twoway process. I am keen that we are always ready to listen to each other to support and share best practice and we create a safe space to do that.”

Our latest monthly winners for August, September and October. > AUGUST: IT Department Nominated by: Alan Tuckwood The IT Department successfully protected the Trust from a global cyber attack back in May 2017. An incident room was set up and teams were deployed across the entire estate to ensure more than 3,000 computers had updated security software installed. Many staff volunteered to work over the weekend and cancelled personal plans in the Trust’s hour of need. > SEPTEMBER: Sherrie Tucker Theatres/Post-op matron Nominated by: Lee Merrison Sherrie goes above and beyond when dealing with patients and ensuring they are prepared for surgery. She always does her best to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. Sherries also supports staff and comes up with ideas to rectify issues – always solutions, never problems.

> OCTOBER: Lisa Thompson Ward Manager, Windsor Ward Nominated by: Sarah Haines An elderly patient was admitted to hospital and his beloved dog Sunny also took a turn for the worse and the vets said Sunny would need to be put to sleep. The elderly patient was naturally very distressed by this and Lisa arranged for Sunny to be brought into see his owner for a final emotional goodbye.

Organised by the clinical audit department, the hospital’s annual research and audit/ QI open day took place in December.

It is a unique opportunity for medical, nursing and allied health professional staff from all specialties to spend half a day listening to presentations; engaging in discussion about the outcomes of research, audit and QI projects, and sharing learning to improve patient care.

Christmas tree lights The Trust began the festive celebrations with the switching on of the Christmas tree lights. The children from St. Pierre School choir sang Christmas carols before the lights were switched on by Hospital Heroes winners, Gordon Hopkins and Sita Lumsden wards, who scooped the Employee of the Year award.

Hospital staff donate food Staff from across the Trust pooled together to donate a whole tables worth of food for Southend-based charity, HARP, which helps to provide food for local

homeless people. The collection included staples like canned goods, cereals and festive treats like chocolate.

Best dressed tree awarded Wards took part in the best dressed tree competition with some fantastic looking trees on display for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy.

The winning prize was awarded to the Paediatric Outpatients team for their tree inspired by Paddington the Bear.

New teddy bears for Neptune patients Poorly youngsters on Neptune Unit were treated to new teddy bears, thanks to the generosity of passengers buying duty free at Southend Airport.

Shoppers were given the option to donate £5.99 which would mean a soft toy for the

children’s ward. The idea was thought of by Southend Hospital volunteer Diana Burrage, who also works at the airport’s duty free shop.

Lighthouse Centre’s charity Christmas jumpers Staff at the Lighthouse Centre raised £30 for Save the Children by sporting festive knitwear for Christmas Jumper Day. Director dishes up xmas dinner Estates and Facilities Director, John Henry, got into the festive spirit by serving Christmas dinners to staff in the Education Centre canteen.

Jeremy Hunt MP visits Southend Hospital The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, visited the Trust in January to talk about patient safety across the NHS. Members of staff, clinical and non-clinical, from all directorates were nominated to attend by directorate leads (including 21 nurses and midwives and 16 doctors) to hear the discussions and were given the opportunity to ask questions. The questions put to Mr Hunt were around nurse training, junior doctor cover at weekends, and the impact of bodies such as the

Jeremy Hunt MP said: “Everyone in the NHS is on a patient safety journey and I can see from the leadership at Southend that they understand the importance of sharing and improving these crucial advances.

Dr Waqas Abbasi, Doctor in Acute Medicine Dr Abbasi sat his A-levels at Robert Clack School, Dagenham, securing four As in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. He did his medical degree in Pakistan and his work experience includes various medical rotations in Pakistan and in the NHS. He said: “I feel very pleased to have joined Southend Hospital. The Trust provides an excellent environment to further my knowledge and skills and excel in my profession.”

Mary recently qualified from the University of Essex and had her placements as a student nurse here at Southend Hospital. She said: “I have settled well. I am very excited to be starting my career here and cannot wait to continue my learning journey alongside the skilled and professional team in the Accident and Emergency Department that I have been placed with. I love that I am able to work in my local hospital and feel very proud to be a part of the multi-disciplined team.”

Christopher Rushton Volunteer

It is with much sadness we report the passing of our colleague and friend Christopher Rushton who worked as a volunteer in the Eye Unit. He had dealt with many health issues recently which we thought he had overcome, but sadly this was not the case. He was a lovely, intelligent, kind and selfless man and we enjoyed working with him. He was an organ donor and had already undergone donation surgery to provide two people with kidneys and help up to eight other people regain their sight.

His daughter said: “Please consider signing up to be a donor as my Dad did. We got to fulfil his wish of living on and saving some lives.”

CLOSER LOOK jonathan croombes Porter Tell us about yourself?

I’ve got cerebral palsy, a condition that affects muscle control and movement, but that doesn’t stop me doing my job, which I’ve been doing for the last 38 years at Southend Hospital and before that at Rochford Hospital. I’ve also been a volunteer. I guess you could say I’m part of the furniture. I also enjoy taking part in quizzes and try and get people from the hospital involved. Feel free to stop me and ask me about it if you see me.

What does your job involve?

I bring essential items up from the basement to the main pharmacy. I enjoy everything about my job as it helps patients and I also get to meet lots of people. It’s nice to be a familiar friendly face at the hospital for patients, visitors and staff.

I am based mainly at the Carlingford Centre where I am special purpose porter for chemotherapy. This means all the chemo drugs get bagged up here and I take them to various wards such as Elizabeth Loury and Bedwell wards.

I also deliver total parenteral nutrition (TPN) which is a form of liquid food given directly into a patient’s blood stream.

What are the best bits about your job?

Everyone knows me at the hospital to say hello to, it makes my day and I hope it makes theirs as well. Doing this job helps keep me fit from all the walking I do as a porter, we certainly cover a lot of miles up and down the corridors. I like doing sports and I’m part of a club called The Village, which I go to every Thursday and do lots of different sports.

What work achievements are you most proud of?

Working at the hospital means you are part of a team, not just your team but others that you help as part of the patient journey and I’m really proud of playing an important part in helping get patients better and home from hospital.

Friends and family think that what I do at the hospital is great as well. I just really love working at the hospital and meeting new people.
