SEPTEMBER 2014
For Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust staff and volunteers
THE AMAZING HOSPITAL HEROES Around 120 dedicated Southend University Hospital staff, from across all areas of the hospital, gathered for a marvelous evening of celebration at the Park Inn by Radisson Palace in Southend for the second annual Hospital Heroes awards. The evening, dubbed the Southend Hospital Oscars, highlighted the great work that both clinical and nonclinical staff do for patients, relatives and innovation at the hospital. The awards were so successful last year that three additional awards were added to this year’s proceedings, including the unsung hero award, the quality care award and the patient choice award, the latter sponsored by the Echo newspaper. Other award categories on the sparkling evening were the innovation award, the chief executive’s award for most outstanding leader, chairman’s outstanding achievement award, team of the year and employee of the year. With 24 nominees, from health care assistants, ward clerks and managers, to nursery housekeeper and
consultants, the nominees showcased the real breadth and diversity of the teams of people, both in front and behind the scenes, that help make Southend Hospital great. The awards evening helped to showcase the fantastic work that goes on at the hospital, all of which wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated, driven and caring people who work tirelessly across the trust. The nominations process, and the awards themselves was a great example of how, for the staff at Southend everybody matters, everything counts and everyone is responsible. And if one thing is certain, judging by the calibre of those nominated this year, the Hospital Heroes awards evening for 2015 will be a hard act to follow. Find out who won what with a double page spread special on pages 4 and 5. And don’t forget that you can still nominate for the monthly Hospital Heroes awards.
