This year we are celebrating the opening of the National Forest Way, a long distance trail which will take walkers on a journey through this transforming landscape.

Across 75 miles of footpaths from the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to Beacon Hill Country Park in Leicestershire, you will discover the story of The National Forest.

Join us between 17th - 29th May for a host of varied walks to explore this ever changing landscape. With walks to suit every taste and ability, from gentle strolls to strenuous rambles and routes to cater for seasoned walkers as well as pushchairs, wheelchairs and family groups.

Immerse yourself in a history that has seen the area change from a rural landscape, through industrialisation and its decline, to a modern-day creation of a new forest.

Accessible for experienced and new walkers alike, the National Forest Way will be accompanied by leaflets, online information and clear signage.

Most walks are free and do not need to be booked. Where there is a charge or booking is required, details are listed under each walk.

Please see below information that you may find useful before attending a walk.

• Please wear suitable footwear and clothing (a waterproof preferably)

Opening in May 2014, the new National Forest Way long distance trail will take walkers on a journey through a transforming landscape.

The National Forest Way

EASY

Routes suitable for most levels of fitness. May be suitable for conventional wheelchairs and pushchairs (please see individual walk key for more information).

LEISURELY

Routes for reasonably fit people. May include some un-surfaced rural paths.

MODERATE Walks for people with a

good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country and may be at a brisk pace.

STRENUOUS Walks for experienced

country walkers with an above average level of fitness. May include hills, rough country and be at a brisk pace.

A circular route beginning on a short length of the National Forest Way followed by village footpaths through the heart of The National Forest. A mix of terrain including surfaced tracks, field footpaths and woodland rides. Much of historical and wildlife interest with panoramic views over the area.

Bradgate Park from 600million years ago – a story of seas, volcanoes, mountains, deserts, glaciers and earthquakes. Led by geologist John Martin, this walk introduces the oldest group of rocks in England and tells their fascinating story.
