But Jody’s calming approach and positive attitude helped me make the decision to participate in the April 2020 issue. ogy and learning programs, which they hope to continue using. School year 2020-21 teacher training will focus almost entirely on blended learning techniques – how to develop curriculum and programing with clear through-lines that seamlessly integrate traditional and modern teaching pedagogies, synchronous and asynchronous learning, in-person and digital experiences.

A CARING ATMOSPHERE

Impact: What Transitioning to the “New” Normal Means in Education Stratford School Unveils its Plan for Fall 2020 By Jeanne Huybrechts, Chief Academic Officer & Allison Wilson, Senior Director of Curriculum and Innovation Preschool-Grade 2, Stratford School We are excited to welcome students back for the upcoming school year with safety in mind and plans for a flexible learning environment. To date, we have established priorities aligned with our school’s mission and goals for students, created a return-to-school plan, and are building out support systems for several potential contingency plans. Here’s a preview of our plans:

STAYING TRUE TO STRATFORD’S GUIDING PRINCIPLES SAFETY

Our commitment to the health and safety of our school community is paramount. We will abide by all state and local statues, heed the advice of health organizations, notably the CDC, and maintain a clean and healthy environment within our schools. Additionally, we will implement several strategies to encourage behaviors known to reduce the spread of COVID-19. 8 August 2020

QUALITY ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Depending on the final state and local statues for this school year wherein shelter-in-place or reduced-occupancy mandates are imposed, we will be ready to transition to one of several teaching and learning models, among them (1) a period of distance learning or (2) a hybrid of distance and on-campus learning (necessary, for example, if classroom capacity limits are imposed). Again, an uninterrupted traditional school year is our fervent hope however, every imaginable alternative scenario is being explored.

COMMITMENT TO IMPROVEMENT

The school has committed to investing in computer hardware and software upgrades to aid in any hybrid accommodation we may face, and also at the request of our teachers, who, during the distance-learning period, learned and developed creative uses for instructional technol-

In all of our distance-learning interactions with students, we tried to bridge the digital gap with some playfulness, some fun, and other manifestations of care and connection. In advisory meetings and in academic classes, we incorporated elements that supported social-emotional health. During our months apart, social-emotional learning was more relevant than ever.

ONWARD WITH OPTIMISM!

As communities begin to open back up, it is important to be mindful of potential messages around COVID-19 that may be confusing to children. Introducing proactive, age-appropriate discussions about how school might look different when they start the new school year are important topics in which to engage and develop as information evolves. This continued focus around what we do know about the virus and sharing the things that are within our control can help build confidence, and a level of comfort, in our children. And, as we begin to plan for this upcoming school year, we are still driven by the mission and vision that attracted us to teaching in the first place, and we are reinvigorated by the creativity and inventiveness unleashed in response to extraordinarily challenging circumstances. We will begin the school year grateful for the opportunity to teach and to learn as we move onward to an excellent future! This plan provides an enriched learning curriculum compared to the distance learning initiative that was implemented quickly in response to the pandemic this past spring. CUSD continues its commitment to excellence in curriculum and instruction.

Educating Capistrano Unified students safely with a robust and challenging online curriculum By Ryan Burris, Chief Communications Officer, Capistrano Unified School District

C

apistrano Unified has spent the last three months building a reopening plan for the fall with the priority of providing an excellent education while ensuring the health and safety of our students and school employees.

returning to school in August, our Board of Trustees approved a comprehensive online curriculum that has been vetted, used consistently with success, and delivers the District core values of rigor, engagement, consistency, and flexibility.

On July 17, Governor Newsom announced that all schools within Orange County will be required to open the 2020-21 school year using online learning ONLY. Governor Newsom made this a requirement for all counties on the state’s coronavirus monitoring list. CUSD will reopen classrooms and campuses when the updated guidelines allow for school’s to safely do so.

Our hybrid reopening plan includes:

The centerpiece of CUSD’s Trustee-approved reopening plan is a robust, consistent, and engaging curriculum that aligns with the District’s core values and can be successfully delivered both in a traditional school setting and online. In preparation for 12 August 2020

K–5 Options when Orange County is removed from the monitoring list: • Students can spend 100 percent of their school time engaging in online learning or attending class on campus. Or they can split their time between home and school. Secondary Options –– 6–12 when Orange County is removed from the monitoring list: • Students can choose 100 percent online learning or spend half their time on campus with a flipped classroom format utilizing independent study. CUSD will ensure juniors and seniors

The 2020-21 CUSD school year will include an integration of mental health, emotional support, and social emotional learning. Administrator training was held in July and teacher trainings will be held in August. Monthly parent webinars will be held during the school year. CUSD will also continue to foster cultural diversity in partnership with the district’s Cultural Proficiency Task Force, established last fall, and with our students, families, and staff. A workshop is planned in the fall to update the school board and the CUSD community on planned strategic actions and initiatives we are undertaking in this regard. Although we are navigating unprecedented times, CUSD remains committed to academic rigor, consistency, and providing an engaging and flexible online and classroom educational experience for all students, while protecting the safety and security of families and employees. computer’s mouse to drag the building blocks into position and connect them to other building blocks to make the characters in their game behave the way they want. As a simple example, this code shows how to make the game character walk back and forth across the screen. The first command identifies when the user clicks on the “Green Flag” to start running the game. Then, a “go to” command places the character in the correct starting position, using “x” and “y” coordinates. Next comes a “forever” loop, which not surprisingly, will run “forever”. Inside the forever loop is a “move” command that causes the character to move forward a certain number of steps. The speed of the character depends on the number of steps. After that, the “next costume” command causes the character’s appearance to shift, similar to how multiple static frames in an animated cartoon give the appearance of motion. oding is the process of using a series of commands to get a computer to do what you want it to do. Regardless of whether you’re playing a video game, using a web-based application, or running a mobile app on your phone or tablet, that game or app is controlled by software. The software consists of a series of logical, step-by-step instructions that the computer can follow. Computers are very “obedient” devices -- they will do whatever they are told to do, even if it’s not what you really want them to do. Therefore, it takes a certain amount of logical thinking skills to be able to correctly tell a computer exactly what to do. Other common terms are “computer programming” or “software development,” but they all mean the same thing. Learning to code helps young students develop logical thinking skills 14 August 2020

and problem-solving skills, and those skills will transfer into all other academic areas. This will help your student do better in their regular daytime school. In addition, coding is fun, and the students get the satisfaction of creating their own computer programs, including games, websites and apps.

CODING FOR YOUNG STUDENTS (AGES 7-10) One of the best tools available for young students to learn coding is “Scratch”, which is a web-based graphical drag-and-drop environment that was developed by M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Scratch provides a menu of simple and colorful building blocks that snap together like puzzle pieces or Legos. Students can use their

bounce” command makes the character bounce back and forth when it touches the right or left sides of the playing field. That command takes into account all of the geometry associated with calculating the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection,

so young students need only describe the desired behavior without having to understand all of the underlying math. The key benefit of Scratch is that it requires minimal typing skills to create some very sophisticated and complex computer games. All of the code building blocks are color-coded (blue is for “motion”, orange is for “control”, violet is for “looks”, etc.), so it is easy for the students to learn where to find each of the more than 100 blocks that are available.

At the Coder School, we teach young students how to use Scratch and many other coding languages as a month-to-month subscription of weekly coding lessons. Contact us for a FREE 30-minute sample lesson to learn more.

Leveraging Lessons Learned... and Igniting Innovation

T

he landscape of education evolved once again on July 17, when the governor issued a directive concerning when Orange County schools would be able to reopen with students on campus. While many schools struggle to keep up with the rapid changes brought about by COVID-19, leaders of Fairmont Schools feel their five campuses -- including the new preschool through grade 12 location in San Juan Capistrano -- are uniquely positioned to pivot and thrive in this challenging time.

EXPERIENCE PLUS INNOVATION Voted Orange County’s Best Private School for five consecutive years, Fairmont has been a leader in private school education since its founding in 1953. Nearly 70 years’ experience equates to many lessons learned. So when the winds of education shift, as they are right now, no school is better-equipped to respond than Fairmont. As Orange County’s largest and oldest private school group, Fairmont is poised to provide its innovative individualized learning experience to students, regardless of the method of delivery.

READY FOR REMOTE Building upon an already-strong remote program, the school invested heavily in technology and training to elevate the level of instruction it can provide to students who will be learning from home this fall. Small classes, differentiated learning, and rigorous curriculum are part of Fairmont’s “tried and true” formula for producing successful students of all ability levels. It’s a formula that has served students well for decades, and it’s 16 August 2020

one that has been integrated into the school’s remote learning program. Another thing that sets Fairmont apart is the lengths its teachers and staff go to in caring for the overall well-being of students. “This has always been important, but perhaps never more so than it is right now,” said Chad Jackson, Fairmont’s president. “Supporting our students’ social and emotional needs is key to our remote instruction.”

PREPARED TO REOPEN When Orange County schools are cleared to have students return, Fairmont will open the doors of its new San Juan Capistrano campus with a plan that ensures safety is paramount and students come first. At that time, Fairmont will be offering in-person instruction -- five days a week and full days with experienced teachers, further differentiating itself from almost every other school in south Orange County. Fairmont’s teachers and administrators have been hard at work researching best practices for reopening, from sanitation and logistics to teacher training and technology. The school’s Reopen-

ing Task Force continues to consult extensively with medical and education experts, while monitoring local, state and federal guidelines to ensure its campuses can open safely. That plan includes everything from “the basics” (such as the use of social distancing, face coverings, and rigorous sanitation) to incorporating physical enhancements (such as the installation of touchless restroom fixtures). “We are living through very challenging times, but Fairmont’s focus hasn’t shifted,” said David Jackson, Fairmont’s chairman. “Our students come first, and our teachers and staff have been working tirelessly to ensure everyone’s return to school exceeds expectations -- regardless of whether a child learns from home or in the classroom.” Fairmont is now enrolling P-12th grade students for the 2020-21 school year across its family of schools in Anaheim, Anaheim Hills, North Tustin and San Juan Capistrano. Some people are born great; some people create their own greatness. For Victoria Vannini, creating with hair and giving her clients a style that reflects their personality and ‘true self ’ is more than just a “cut and color.”

“It begins with the consultation,” says Victoria. “I want to know about your lifestyle and career. [About] the hair products and tools you use. This is essential in evaluating the condition and texture of your hair and helps us to come to a place that is realistic - at the beginning and where we want to go for the future.” Education is an important element to Victoria’s career. SIMPLE TIPS TO HELP YOUR HAIR GROW SUMMER SPECIAL!!!

1. Get frequent trims - Yes REALLY... Split ends leads to your hair losing length and strength !!! 2. Resist the urge to go Blonde (unless you are a Natural). When the cuticle of the hair is damaged from bleach, you can have more breakage or split ends. 3. Distribute the Natural Oils in your Hair... Victoria is fabulous!! I moved to Orange County 1O years ago forcing me to find a new hair stylist, and had several horrible experiences. I decided my mission was to look at the hair style of each person I encountered. I found that perfect hairstyle and I asked her who did her hair and she gave me Victoria's name and salon. Now, I have people ask ME all the time who does my hair, and have even had people ask to take my picture so they could show their out of town stylist! She truly cares about her clients and puts all her efforts and skill to work to create the perfect style. I always look forward to seeing Vic and leaving the salon with a huge smile on my face and feeling great!

The Hidden Risks and Costs of Selling a Home in Uncertain Times As the residential real estate industry is forced to re-think how it operates during the global pandemic, many homeowners are wondering how to “safely” approach the home selling process in this uncertain time.

S

enior Home Purchase Program (SHPP) offers a unique service which addresses the hidden risks and costs which homeowners now face with the traditional home selling process. “Selling a home, even in “normal times” can be overwhelming, especially for seniors who have been in their homes for years and feel emotional about moving; and now there is the added concern of health risks during the sales process,” says Rob Perkins, SHPP co-founder. Senior Home Purchase Program, based in San Diego and now serving Orange County, offers a process with built-in health and safety measures, as well as no seller costs, which is in stark contrast to the traditional home selling model. “Many homeowners don’t realize the true selling costs of a home sale,” says Perkins. “The SOLD price does not reflect the hidden expenses charged to a seller, significantly affecting their net proceeds,” he adds. These costs include prepping/ staging, commissions (5-6% of sales price), closing costs, termite/repair costs, transfer fees, notary/document 20 August 2020

fees, and holding costs while on the market. Additionally, the many unknowns inherent in the process- showings, cancelled escrows, time on market, logistics of next purchase- all contribute to high anxiety and stress levels for home sellers, especially seniors who often need to move quickly. Rob and his sister Corinne Ross had this experience with grandparents who had lived in their homes for decades and needed to move. “It took a small village of relatives to manage their home sales,” remembers Perkins. After a decade in residential real estate investing, Perkins and Ross created the Senior Home Purchase Program (SHPP) in 2015, a niche service offering seniors a transparent and simple solution to home selling. SHPP purchases homes directly in as-is condition, alleviating the stress, risk, and costs associated with a traditional home sale. With SHPP, there are no agents, no home preparation, no showings, and no costs to the seller. Homes are sold “as-is” with clutter, unwanted fur-

niture, and all. There are no failed escrows, commissions, closing costs or repairs. SHPP “guarantees a certain sale, at a certain price” as well as a flexible timeline for moving. “Our seniors often don’t know the exact date of their move into a community, so we provide flexibility with closing dates, as well as a leaseback option,” Ross shared. The SHPP process is a staggeringly simple one compared to selling on the open market. “The first step is a home visit to gather details about the home, the client’s needs, and their timelines,” Perkins said. Next, SHPP copiously reviews the local market in comparison to the home. “We then meet and present our absolute best offer based on our careful evaluation. We are transparent in illustrating our analysis and how it differs from the traditional offer. With no costs or fees to the seller, our SHPP offer is very compelling,” he explains. Transparency, integrity, and client comfort level are top priorities for SHPP. “Most of our customers are referrals, so the trust factor is big for us,” Ross explains. Stella, a former client, shared, “Their honesty, transparency, and diligence made me feel completely comfortable with them. The process was exceptionally easy and stress-free.” “This is an emotional and significant financial decision for our clients,” Ross said. “We encourage them to discuss our offer with trusted others, and to weigh all their options.” “We are excited to offer our simplified, safe home selling program to Orange County,” says Perkins. “SHPP alleviates many of the concerns of home selling during the pandemic. Our goal is to offer a certain, safe, and stress-free solution to our clients during this very uncertain time.”

Action Duct

CLEANING COMPANY Helping Orange County Breathe Better Since 1978 By Jody Robinson

The space between custom and conventional is vast. Between thorough and cursory. Committed and inconsistent. Jim Jerling, owner of Action Duct Cleaning of Orange County has been around long enough to know that space well.

S

pecializing in commercial and residential duct cleaning services (including duct and vent cleaning, kitchen exhaust cleaning, HVAC cleaning and pressure washing), Jim is no stranger to hard work, or to the inherent need for clean business practices in a dirty industry. Handling the most challenging, demanding jobs with alacrity isn’t easy. But it’s become second nature for Jim and his team, and he’ll be the first to tell you why. “I wish I had an inspiring story about how I got into the industry. But I think the necessity of having this job just to pay the bills at first really clarified my mission,” he says. "Knowing what it was that I needed, and having no illusions about the work let me see what was best for our clients.” When it comes to serving industrial, commercial and residential clients’ duct cleaning needs, halfway isn’t good enough. Jim and his team pride themselves on being meticulous about the details, and providing the utmost in customer service. Offering fair prices is just the start. Offering peace of mind is the real goal. As members of the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA), Jim and his knowledgable team of service providers follow the “highest-level of industry practices. Our NADCA Air Systems Cleaning Specialist certification means we abide by the most 22 August 2020

stringent standards and operate under a strict code of ethics.” As an essential business, Action Duct Cleaning is open and fully operational during this global pandemic - on the front lines to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses by sanitizing residential communities, schools, hospitals, manufacturing and commercial facilities, restaurants, hotels, gyms and more. “Everything went so smoothly working with Action Duct for the HVAC cleaning of our Laguna Hills store,”says Tamar M., facilities coordinator for Road Runner Sports. "They were very responsive, their quote was half the price of the other quote we received, and they made it as convenient as possible for us so it wouldn’t impact our business during store hours ...I would definitely use Action Duct again.”

Owners Jim and Tracie Jerling

Residential customer David C. agrees with Tamar’s assessment and adds “one of our family members having some asthma/allergy issues. So we wanted to try and make our home environment as pristine as possible. I contacted several air duct cleaners. Then we saw a documentary that said you should only work with those that are certified by the NADCA. That is where we found Action Duct Cleaning. That, plus the positive BBB, Yelp and Angie List ratings…” Company values play a huge role in executing a clean business plan. Action Duct believes their work improves the quality of life around each client, has an immeasurable passion to do better, a commitment to honesty, and a penchant for remarkable service and selfless teamwork. For Jim, “decades of experience and a remarkable safety record, was the least I could give my clients, and to repay my own leaders who taught me everything I know about duct cleaning.” Clean or not clean. Washed or unwashed. There isn’t a middle ground to greatness, and Jim and his team of tenured and conscientious technicians are taking action on your behalf every step of the way. Why Repipe when you can

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection By Jody Robinson

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

P

ipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home. Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide. Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.” 24 August 2020

Pool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.” In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different. Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching. “Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

Business Spotlight: SUBWAY

Local Restaurateur Marco Scognamiglio is dedicated to “getting involved and giving back” By Jody Robinson

It isn’t always easy to trace the beginnings of a business, especially a lucrative one. Many times you have to wend back through a great many partnerships, over all the handshakes and deals made, past the initial boom to the original idea.

S

ometimes though, there’s a crystallized history. An evident path. Such were the beginnings for Marco Scognamiglio. First generation college graduate from Arizona State University with a degree in Business Communication and Management, the Dana Point native followed in his parents’ footsteps into the local restaurant business. Marco currently operates five Southern California Subway franchises - in San Clemente, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills and two in Dana Point. His ties to the restaurant industry are deeply rooted and familial. His father, Enzo, owns the popular Brio Tuscany Grille in Dana Point and his mother, Jill, operated several Subway franchises herself so between his education and literally growing up in the industry, Marco was well poised to embark on his own entrepreneurial endeavors with the goal to “get involved and give back” to the community in which he lives and works. “My first job was cleaning dishes and calamari in the back of my father’s Italian restaurant in Dana Point,” says Marco. “I saw the community he created in that space, and wanted nothing more than to build upon that legacy to create my own success and community relationships someday.” A board member of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Laguna Hills Chamber of Com-

merce, Marco is committed to serving those around him, especially now, when times are so uncertain for many due to COVID-19. “My goal has always been to grow my organization so I can feed and provide for my beautiful community, while also giving my team members better opportunities for their own personal and professional growth,” says Marco. “Right now, there is no greater need than enmeshing a true sense of wellbeing for my team and our customers in everything we do.” Marco has taken many steps to pivot his business during the pandemic, including taking the opportunity to provide for local heroes, starting “Subs for Heroes” - a program that has to date donated over 200 meals to local hospitals. “Frontline workers are doing everything they can to ensure the health and safety of all of our loved ones right now,” he says. “It is the absolute least we can do.” Franchising has come a long way since

1851, when Isaac Singer became the first American to sell the rights to his sewing machines to end users, but the basic history is still evident event today: do business, and do it well. Check out the Subway App for exclusive discounts and delivery through 3rd party services including Postmates, UberEats and Doordash. Subway caters! serve handmade, thin, crispy, flaky crust pizza. I had “Make Your Own Pizza” with prosciutto and arugula, complete with a soft flurry of mozzarella. For heartier appetites, I recommend the Filetto Toscano (USDA Premium choice filet mignon medallions pan roasted and served with a sweet red onion, shallots, Chianti reduction and melted fontina cheese, and favorites like the Rigatoni Casa Brio characterized by grilled chicken breast, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, baby spinach, cremini mushrooms, sweet baby peas and fresh basil topped with fresh buffalo mozzarella.

DINING OUT:

Brio Tuscany Grill By Ann Laurence

I

have to admit - I’m pretty particular when it comes to deciding where to go for dinner on date night, out for a family meal or simply stepping out to enjoy a glass of fine wine and live entertainment after work. Lucky for me, I live in Dana Point and am only a stone’s throw from a popular eatery that dishes up all this and delicious Italian cuisine to boot: Brio Tuscany Grill. This place isn’t the kind of establishment that has huge, bedazzled lights pointing to it with acrobatic sign holders out front. This restaurant respects itself in a quaint location at 24050 Camino Del Avion in Dana Point. If you didn’t know about it, you might miss it driving by. But after you read this, I guarantee you’ll make it a point to seek it out.

For starters, the Antipasto Italiano Platter arrives with an array of flavorful favorites - Prosciutto di Parma, artisan salame, fresh buffalo mozzarella, Tuscan olives, grilled artichoke hearts, roasted bell peppers and toasted ciabatta bread. Yum! A seafood aficionado? Try the Mare Platter which is made for sharing: Buttermilk battered calamari fritti, seared Ahi tuna and blue shrimp scampi. I love the wood-fired pizzas here. They don’t make deep-dish-American-football-sweatpants pizza. No. They 36 August 2020

Taking Care of the Skin You’re In with Dr. William James Tidwell, Golden Coast Dermatology, Skin Cancer and Vein Center By Jody Robinson

T

here are at least 19 popular “skin” related sayings. “Thick-skinned,” “by the skin of one’s teeth,” “no skin off my back.” The list goes on far longer than you’d think, especially considering how easily most people forget about their skin entirely. We carry around a bottle of expired sunscreen, or none at all. We get a new mole or freckle and think nothing of it. We worry about our developing wrinkles in front of the mirror and then walk right out the front door without a second thought. Yet there is an entire practice of medicine dedicated to treating your skin like the hero it is. Dr. William James Tidwell, M.D. has made it his focus in the last decade to ensure that his patients receive top quality treatment by the best, most professional team around for their dermatology, skin cancer and vein care needs.

a microscope, we completely remove all the cancer in one treatment so you leave knowing that you are cancer free that day. No other method does that. It also saves more healthy tissue than any other option treating skin cancer."

“My vision was to create a practice people looked forward to coming to,” says Dr. Tidwell. "Our newly renovated, modern office space is the realization of that vision, and the fulfillment of a long-time passion of mine that caused me to apply for medical school in the first place so many years ago.”

Though the core of the practice is providing skin cancer screening and treatments, Dr. Tidwell and his team also use advanced procedures to treat painful and swollen varicose veins.

Taking care of the whole body means restoring his patient’s full health - no small task when you’re starting from the outside in. Yet being fellowship trained in both Mohs Micrographic Surgery and endovenous procedures, and dual Board Certified in Dermatology and Venous and Lymphatic Medicine certainly helps. What that translates to in layman’s terms is that Dr. Tidwell completed an additional training program after his dermatology residency - learning from the best physicians worldwide "how to cure cancer and leave only minimal evidence it was ever there. Using 40 August 2020

“Many people struggle with painful legs, swollen veins, cramps or restless legs at night which patients might not realize can be a result of venous insufficiency and circulation problems,” he says. “You don’t have to suffer with this any longer and insurance covers vein treatment when they meet medical criteria. We can help resolve this to get your sleep and shorts back." Modern vein care, like the Mohs treatment, is minimally invasive, and requires virtually no downtime. Instead of taking days to find out results or lay up in bed after surgery, Dr. Tidwell’s patients can see the results in less than an hour.

“I really try to spend time talking to my patients about what their desired outcomes are - be it dealing neatly with cancer on the nose, lip, or eyelid, looking at diseased veins, or putting together a personalized, customized treatment plan for cosmetic procedures,” he says. Advances in medicine have made it possible to achieve holistic and rejuvenating outcomes. “Seeing where the issues are, restoring healthy blood flow, or reducing the risks of general anesthesia by having skin cancers removed in the office instead of on the operating table makes it possible for patients to experience an office visit where health and wellbeing are first.” Billy Travis and Naomi Miller are just two of Dr. Tidwell’s many patients who took the time to write glowing recommendations about his skill, attitude and approach in addressing their specific medical needs. “I have to say I generally don’t do the review thing BUT, Dr. Tidwell definitely deserves this review. He has such a positive attitude and genuinely cares about his patents,” says Billy Travis. "He does an incredible job. He takes time with his patients and answers all questions completely. No one likes going to the doctor, but please take the time and schedule an appointment with him. Skin cancer is not to be taken lightly. Thanks to Dr. Tidwell, I am cancer free. You can’t even see the scar from the 2-inch long incision! Thank you Dr. Tidwell, I will be coming back yearly for a checkup.” Naomi Miller echoes Billy’s assessment and adds “… Dr. Tidwell has a professional manner and takes great pride in this work. But his peaceful and calming demeanor sets him in a class of his own …If you have a need for a dermatologist, I can highly recommend Dr. Tidwell and his staff, based on my real experience.” While Dr. Tidwell doesn’t want skin to be your number one pressing question each day, he’d prefer it if you paid him a visit at least once a year: that way, when you walk out your front door, you do so with a confirmed sense of confidence in your own skin. And if there is a cosmetic treatment you might be interested in or wanting to know more about, Dr. Tidwell and his team are happy to advise you because “aging gracefully and feeling confident are wonderful things. I don’t believe in overhyped marketing or unnatural results. Just the right treatment, for the right person, in the right amount to make them happy."

Balboa Balboa Bay Bay Resort Resort A Spectacular Summer Stay-cation Destination for Family Fun

BY JODY ROBINSON

T

he world has changed over the past few months. I’m sure, if you’re like me and most of my mom friends, you’ve already had to adjust, reschedule or even cancel some of your family’s muchanticipated travel plans during these unprecedented times of shelterin-place, and safer-at-home. Before we know it school will be back in session and our family didn’t want to let the entire summer fly by without some semblance of a “vacation.” We had our reservations about traveling 42 August 2020

too far away, but were definitely looking for a change of scenery. So when things started opening back up, we made

a beeline for family fun at the Balboa Bay Resort in nearby Newport Beach. The resort features newly appointed guest rooms and suites, fresh, modern, contemporary furnishings and amenity-rich luxury including a full-service spa complete with nine

treatment rooms and a premier blow-dry bar for moms who want a little extra pampering. The 24-hour fitness center and array of fun and energizing outdoor endeavors are designed to keep every member of the pack happily occupied. From the perfect pool day (think lounge chairs, daybeds, private cabanas and Pool Bar for drinks and lunch) to onproperty recreation rentals including electric Duffy boats, kayaks, paddle boards and bikes, our family was able to create our own customized experience that combined the best of both - relaxation and recreation.

Upon arrival, we stocked up on snacks and beverages at Blend Cafe and boarded a Duffy boat for a meandering self-guided tour of the picturesque waterways of Newport Harbor. Dinner at the resort’s seafood-focused waterfront restaurant A&O Kitchen+Bar showcased expertly crafted cocktails, local brews and shareable plates for even the most discriminating palate (by that I mean there is something on the menu for every member of our family, including finicky eaters). I opted for a flavorful tuna poke, my husband went with a grilled-toperfection signature burger made from grass-fed beef, caramelized

onion and white cheddar on brioche and the kids both cleaned their plates of fish and chips before diving into a sweet treat of peanut butter s’mores for dessert. Grab a gourmet coffee at Blend Cafe to start your day, paddle board the afternoon away, and come back home for a relaxing waterfront dinner at A&O Kitchen+Bar (casual indoor and outdoor seating, including fire pits and live weekend entertainment). The Resort is implementing safety measures, and offering a flexible cancellation policy (stays through September 30th can be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance), in accordance with CDC

guidelines, to ensure its guests are brought the highest level of service, no matter the changing landscape.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. 50 August 2020

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine. Virtual Medicine DURING THIS TRYING TIME By Stephanie Frisch

I just read about a medical service made available to 33 million Medicare Part B beneficiaries. The company is called, “Doctor on Demand” and it connects people with board certified physicians of their choice over secure live video from the comfort of their home, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

T

his move improves access to convenient healthcare for beneficiaries not just right here in Orange County, but across the United States, so share this news with your loved ones. Doctor on Demand is the first of it’s kind to expand it’s offering to include Medicare Part B coverage following the CMS expansion of telehealth services in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Medicare beneficiaries can access medical care for 90% of the most common conditions treated by both primary care and urgent care facilities such as infections, cold and flu, rashes, and even the diagnosis and testing of COVID-19. Ongoing care for those with chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid issues, as well as prescription 52 August 2020

refills are also an available benefit to Medicare Part B beneficiaries. There are even mental health and psychiatric appointments available. I quickly created an account for my husband by using his Medicare ID number, email address, birthday, phone number and creating a password for him. In less than a few minutes the options for what kind of medical care he could schedule for were easily listed showing the price for the services. ($0 in this case). I used my computer, but it can also be accessed through a smartphone or tablet by downloading the “Doctor on Demand” app from the App Store or Google play.

During this public health emergency, Doctor on Demand is waiving the copay for Medicare Part B beneficiaries (this could include the $198 annual deductible and the 20% co-insurance), for as long as the government allows. This means that even if you only have just Original Medicare and no Medicare supplement or you’re not enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this service is free to you to use. Please don’t be daunted by the fact that it’s an online service, it’s really easy. But you do need to have a camera option on your computer to access.

W

ith decades of experience in treating and protecting patients with cancer, City of Hope is among the nation’s most prepared organizations to help patients through the COVID-19 crisis – and is one of the best and safest places to receive cancer care. City of Hope Newport Beach continues to provide lifesaving treatment while taking every measure necessary to protect patients, families, and staff. “Patient health is our number one priority and our COVID-19 protec54 August 2020

tive measures are an extension of the high-quality care we provide,” says Tingting Tan, M.D., Ph.D., a medical oncologist at City of Hope Newport Beach who specializes in thoracic cancers. “We remain focused on protecting our patients and their loved ones while making sure they get the care they need.” Since cancer patients are particularly vulnerable to infection, protecting them means that safety measures need to start before they arrive at the front door. With limited exceptions,

visitors need to wait for patients outside the building during this crucial period. Visitors are welcome to walk with patients, or bring wheelchairs, to the door, where staff greets them and begins the check-in process. City of Hope recognizes the importance of involving family in your visits and treatments during this time. There are several ways visitors can participate in appointments. Patients can conference them in on a video call or a phone call while they’re in the doctor’s office, or the doctor can

come outside the building before or after the appointment to speak with the patient and visitor together. If you’re a patient, here are some other ways you’ll be protected when you come in for an appointment: As you enter the lobby, the first thing that will happen is a temperature check. It’s quick and easy. A staff member will hold an infrared thermometer to your forehead to make sure your temperature is under 100 degrees Fahrenheit. You’ll receive a colored wristband that lets everyone that you’ve been cleared for temperature. You won’t be surprised to learn that you will also be given a mask. Masks are one of the best ways to shield each other from respiratory droplets, so every patient receives a medical grade mask to wear for the duration of their appointment; you can be certain that our staff also will be wearing masks at all times. If you brought your own mask, you may continue to wear it underneath the mask we provide.

“Patient health is our number one priority and our COVID-19 protective measures are an extension of the highquality care we provide …” Next stop: the reception desk, for the normal check-in process. You’ll find the waiting area inviting and safe, with signs posted asking that social distancing be maintained, and seating that has been appropriately spaced. If you have a physician appointment, you’ll wait on the first floor for a medical assistant to take you back for your visit. If you have come for an infusion, an additional temperature check will be performed when you arrive at the second-floor infusion clinic. Everyone in the clinic wears a face mask and either a face shield or goggles, and

gloves are worn by every clinician providing infusion care. In addition, every infusion bay is physically distanced. To further ensure safety, City of Hope frequently and meticulously sanitizes all areas of the facility, including but not limited to waiting rooms, hard surfaces, and high-traffic and hightouch areas. Hand sanitizing stations are located throughout the building. Patients can take comfort in City of Hope’s continued commitment to provide them with exceptional cancer care.

Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

M

by Jody robinson

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.” Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them. “Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.” Thank you Betty!

Choosing Happiness

sponses to my burning questions about life; 10 positive, 5 negative, and 5 indifferent. The game was interestingly designed to give me the positive answer I was hoping for more times than not, leaving me feeling good and wanting to ask more questions. So how do we put these positive psychology elements into practice in our own lives? Reframe your thoughts. Challenge your fears and your anger. Engage with your social network. Find ways to connect instead of shutting yourself off from others. Celebrate small accomplishments. Recognizing even the smallest victories boosts our confidence and leverages it toward larger successes.

By Becky Lomaka, MA, CT Director of Grief Support and Education O’Connor Mortuary I’ve been thinking a lot about happiness lately. Maybe it’s my way of coping with the uncertainty, unrest, fear, and anger I sense both in our world and in myself.

O

ur personal narratives have been turned on their ends. Much like people who are grieving a traumatic loss, our world view has been shattered and we are wandering through our personal wilderness trying to make sense and meaning of our world again. We’ve lost our “assumptive world” and we are desperate to get it back. I often find that my anger ends up affecting me in a profoundly negative way, yet without changing the outcome of a situation that led me to feel this anger in the first place. A dear friend gave me an inspiring book, The Happiness Advantage, by Shawn Achor, a leader in the field of Positive Psychology. In his book, he turns our widely recognized beliefs about happiness upside down. We often believe that when we work hard and find success that leads to happiness. His research shows just the opposite: happiness fuels success, not the other way around. This led me to dig deeper into the theories and practices of positive psychology. Basically, positive psychology is the science of well-being; it’s the study of the positive aspects 58 August 2020

of the human experience. Whatsyourgrief.com, a leading website for all things grief-related, had a recent post about coping with grief through PERMA, a model created by one of the founders of the positive psychology movement, Martin Seligman. PERMA stands for Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments; the five core elements he believes help us work towards a life of fulfillment, happiness and meaning. How do we find fulfillment, happiness and meaning in a world that is so broken right now? If Achor’s theory proves true, my happiness can fuel my worldview. Achor proposes an intriguing challenge. He encourages, “Spend two minutes a day scanning the world for three new things you’re grateful for. And do that for 21 days. The reason why that’s powerful is you’re training your brain to scan the world in a new pattern, you’re scanning for positives instead of threats. It’s the fast way of teaching optimism.” This brings me back to my childhood and the Magic 8 Ball that I love so much. There were 20 possible re-

Accept that some things are not within your power to change. Let go of that control and focus on what you can do. Play! Strive for balance in your life. Do something good. Find some way to contribute to something that is bigger than yourself. Lastly, as Fred Rogers reminded countless children to help them cope when they would see scary things, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Life isn’t always fair, it isn’t always safe, and we don’t always get our fairy tale endings. Yet, sometimes our most significant growth comes during times of grief, struggle and suffering. Is it possible that we can make space for happiness there too?

Virtual Medicine During This Trying Time

I

just read about a medical service made available to 33 million Medicare Part B beneficiaries. The company is called, “Doctor on Demand” and it connects people with board certified physicians of their choice over secure live video from the comfort of their home using a computer that has a video camera component, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Medicare beneficiaries can access medical care for 90% of the most common conditions treated by both primary care and urgent care facilities such as infections, cold and flu, rashes, and even the diagnosis and testing of COVID-19. Ongoing care for those with chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid issues, as well as prescription refills are also an available benefit to Medicare Part B beneficiaries. There are even mental health and psychiatric appointments available.

Unfortunately, once these veins become diseased, they don’t get better on their own. When symptoms are present the treatment of varicose veins is medically necessary and covered by insurance. Earlier treatment can prevent more serious complications and symptoms down the road. Modern treatments are minimally invasive, done in the office with little discomfort, and fast recovery time. SCHEDULE TO GET YOUR VEINS EVALUATED AND ON THE ROAD TO HEALTHY LEGS AGAIN!

Dr. William Tidwell, MD

Board Certified in Venous and Lymphatic Medicine Board Certified Dermatologist

We also offer VenaSeal a newer treatment that permanently treats the varicose veins of the legs by sealing the affected veins with a safe adhesive agent. Patients are able to quickly return to their normal activities.

I quickly created an account for my husband by using his Medicare ID number, email address, birthday, phone number and creating a password for him. In less than a few minutes the options for what kind of medical care he could schedule for were easily listed showing the price for the services. ($0 in this case) During this public health emergency, Doctor on Demand is waiving the copay for Medicare Part B beneficiaries (this could include the $198 annual deductible and the 20% co-insurance), for as long as the government allows. This means that even if you only have just Original Medicare and no Medicare supplement or you’re not enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this service is free to you to use.

Home Safety Advisors Specializing in safe, accessible, comfortable walk-in tubs for seniors By Jody Robinson

B

y the time my friend’s grandmother passed away at 92, she had fallen six times. Two of those falls resulted in broken bones - once, her hip. Horrifying, to find oneself in that position. Tripped up by your walker or the corner of a rug. Often, a wet bathroom or kitchen floor. She was in a home for five out of the six falls, and still, it took some time to respond, get her stabilized, diagnosed, and fully recovered. Falls, my friend and her family quickly learned, are the leading cause of injury related deaths in Americans aged 65 and older. She didn’t end up passing because of a slip up directly, but her bones certainly didn’t give her a pass either, in those last days. Home Safety Advisor’s President Dave Riggle has a similar story, as do so many around the country. His mother passed from a fall in her bathroom, and was the direct impetus for his business beginnings. “None of us five kids had any idea she struggled, or we would have fixed it immediately. I have skin in this game - I don’t want anyone else to suffer like my mother did.” While other home improvement companies may include walk-in tubs as a part of their overall offerings, safe bathrooms are the entire focus and area of specialization for Dave and his team of professionals. So much so that Dave personally interviewed over 400 seniors about the difficulties they were experiencing in order to provide the best possible product to meet their needs. 62 August 2020

While the business formally began in Indiana, the team at Home Safety Advisors expanded their operation into the Southern California market a year ago and are thrilled to have met with such a positive response and feedback to their scope of services. Many clients come to them via wordof-mouth. And it’s not hard to see why. Installing something that could literally mean the difference between serious injury or not is no small feat. And something that Dave’s team takes extremely seriously. All of their walk-in tubs and showers are made in the U.S.A., come with a lifetime warranty, are great for health and easy to clean. But perhaps a lesser known perk is the luxurious spa experience available in the privacy of your home. “Their (occupational therapists) confidence in referring us speaks volumes about our capability and their trust in us,” says Dave. “This is rarely done in our industry, and certainly not by any big company.” The showers and baths are crafted right here in California, providing clients a spa-like experience with a side door. Once inside, just relax. Ergonomic faucets, a hand shower, and marine grade fiberglass

combine to make your bathing experience relaxing, instead of stressful. While most steps into a walk-in shower or bath are still 6-9” tall, Home Safety Advisors boast just a 2” threshold, low enough to greatly decrease - if not eliminate - your chances of spilling over the edge accidentally. Offering bench seats, grab bars, and shower wands, Dave can even customize the threshold or seat to fit the client specifically. As Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS), Dave and his team understand the unique needs of older adults and will do everything they can to provide their clients and their families with a sense of confidence and safety in their own home. “We don’t want any slip ups: from the initial consultation to our single-day installation; we’re here to walk you through the unique experience of finding solutions to carry out your aging-in-place modifications.”
