Prevent the Fall. Protect your Independence

When people talk about aging in place, the conversation usually centers on comfort, familiarity, and staying connected to community.

But there’s a quieter issue that deserves more attention.

Falls have become one of the biggest threats to a senior’s ability to remain at home. Not because people are careless. Not because homes aren’t loved or well cared for. But because our bodies change, even when our confidence hasn’t.

Nationally, one in four seniors over 65 experiences a fall each year. What surprises many families is where those falls happen most often: at home. In familiar spaces. In rooms that have felt safe for decades. That’s how it felt for my client, Barbara. Until that one time when she slipped on a loose rug and hit her head on the dresser. She went down hard. She was alone at home. Somehow found a way to call the paramedics. Then ER, then hospital stay, then rehab. Where she called us and we set up in-home care a few weeks ago.

Why This Is Becoming More Common

• More older adults are living alone after the loss of a spouse.

• Many are choosing to delay moves to senior living.

• Adult children often live out of the area or are balancing full schedules of their own.

• And many seniors feel, understandably, that if they’ve been “doing fine,” there’s no reason to change anything.

The challenge is that falls don’t usually come with much warning.

• One misstep on the stairs.

• A slippery bathroom floor.

• Poor lighting in a hallway that never seemed dim before.

And suddenly, everything changes.

The Tipping Point No One Plans For

In my experience as a senior care provider, it’s rarely the fall alone that causes the biggest shift. It’s what comes after.

A hospital stay. A loss of confidence. A doctor or family member saying, “Maybe it’s time to consider other options.” Just like it did for Barbara.

Prevention Is About Planning, Not Fear

Most safety changes happen after something goes wrong. Grab bars are installed after a scare. Home care begins after a hospitalization. Emergency alert systems are purchased after everyone has already been shaken.

Aging in place today requires a more proactive mindset.

It means looking at your home through a practical lens. Is lighting bright enough in hallways and stairways? Are throw rugs creating hidden tripping hazards? Would a handrail or grab bar make daily routines easier?

Is there someone who checks in regularly?

It also means recognizing that strength, balance, and stamina change over time. Accepting light support early, whether that’s help with errands, housekeeping, or simply having someone nearby, can prevent bigger disruptions later.

A Simple Question Worth Asking

Here’s a question I often encourage families to consider:

If a fall happened tomorrow, would your current plan hold?

If the honest answer is “I’m not sure,” that’s not a reason to panic. It’s a reason to prepare

Aging in place is absolutely possible. But it works best when it’s intentional. Safety isn’t about limiting independence. It’s about protecting it. Just ask Barbara.

Who’s Watching the Money? Why Stewardship Matters in Merchant Services

For many business owners, merchant services—the systems that let customers pay by card, phone, or online—hum quietly in the background. Once the terminals are installed and transactions start clearing, payments become a classic case of “set it and forget it.”

Gary Williams, founder of Ascension Consulting, says that mindset can be expensive.

“Merchant services touch every dollar coming into a business,” he explains. “Revenue, cash flow, compliance, customer experience—it’s all tied together. When no one is truly overseeing it, inefficiencies quietly pile up.”

Payment processing isn’t just a technical utility. It’s a core business function that deserves the same attention as accounting, legal oversight or strategic planning.

MORE THAN JUST A MONTHLY FEE

Most companies view merchant services as a fixed cost. Fees appear on a statement, the bill gets paid, and business moves on. But Williams believes that’s a missed opportunity.

“When payments are properly managed, they can actually support profitability,” he says. “Higher approval rates, better system integration, and cleaner workflows mean more completed sales, faster access to funds, and fewer frustrations for both staff and customers.”

The trouble begins when no one at a leadership level is responsible for the payment ecosystem. Processing fees slowly creep upward. Systems stop syncing efficiently. Compliance rules change without notice. Optimization opportunities are missed—not out of neglect, but because no one is looking closely enough.

By the time the impact shows up on the balance sheet, the damage is already done.

WHY OVERSIGHT MATTERS NOW

Today’s payment environment is far more complex than a simple swipe at the counter. Businesses juggle point-of-sale systems, online checkout platforms, accounting software, inventory tools, and ever-evolving security standards. When these systems aren’t aligned, everyday operations slow down, errors multiply, and growth becomes harder to manage. This is where Williams believes stewardship matters most.

“Leadership isn’t just about growth,” he says. “It’s about protection—protecting margins, protecting data, and protecting the customer experience.”

That philosophy led Ascension Consulting to introduce a role more commonly associated with finance or operations.

THE FRACTIONAL CMSO

“As a Merchant’s Fractional Chief Merchant Services Officer (CMSO), Gary works alongside businesses’ owners, CFOs, and accounting teams to ensure merchant services stay aligned with company goals. The role focuses on monitoring fees, improving system performance, staying ahead of compliance changes, and adapting payment operations as the business evolves.

“It’s about turning something most businesses ignore into a strategic advantage,” Williams says.

For many companies, that proactive oversight is the difference between constantly reacting to problems and preventing them altogether.

STEWARDSHIP

BEYOND THE NUMBERS

Ascension’s commitment to stewardship extends beyond client accounts. Williams actively support community initiatives including the San Diego Wounded Warrior Carry Forward 5K as well as several Vir-

tual 5K Events throughout the year; Gary is committed to running a minimum of 40K in 2026 to respect and support our Wounded Veteran Heroes.

“The same principles apply,” Williams says. “Intentional leadership, consistency, and service.”

It’s a reminder that stewardship isn’t just financial—it’s cultural.

A SYSTEM WORTH PAYING ATTENTION TO

Merchant services may operate behind the scenes, but their impact is anything but invisible. With the right oversight, they can protect value, streamline operations, and quietly support long-term growth.

“When you treat payments with the respect they deserve,” Williams says, “they stop being a cost center and start becoming a strategic tool.”

Sometimes, the smartest move is simply paying attention to what’s been there all along.

As an Independent Merchant Services Partner, Ascension Consulting Puts Your Interests First Owner Gary Williams welcomes inquiries and offers a complimentary, no-obligation assessment of your current processing plan.

Where Vision Takes Root: The Mah Family Legacy of Medical Innovation

With $53 million in transformational gifts, Adeline Yen Mah and Robert A. Mah have created a home for discovery that is reshaping the future of healthcare: the Falling Leaves Foundation Medical Innovation Building.

Adeline Yen Mah, M.D., MRCP (London), and Robert A. Mah, Ph.D., long dreamed of conducting research together. Though their careers took different paths—she’s a physician and anesthesiologist, and he’s a professor of environmental microbiology— they shared a conviction that the breakthroughs of tomorrow would emerge from collaboration across disciplines.

That belief has found new life at the University of California, Irvine. With $53 million in philanthropic gifts since 2021, the Mah family has created the Falling Leaves Foundation Medical Innovation Building, a 215,000-square-foot research hub designed to foster discovery at the intersections of science, medicine and technology.

Located in the heart of UC Irvine’s health sciences district, the facility is among the largest translational research centers on the West Coast. Its laboratories and meeting spaces are built to dissolve silos and connect diverse thinkers pursuing solutions to the world’s most pressing health challenges, from cancer to neurodegenerative disease to vaccine development.

“The Falling Leaves Foundation Medical Innovation Building is the ideal venue for bold, crossdisciplinary collaborations that redefine what is possible in science and medicine,” said Steve Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D., vice chancellor for health affairs. “With their remarkable generosity, the Drs. Mah are accelerating the translation of discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic.”

The Mahs’ gifts extend beyond the building itself. They have endowed two pioneering centers within the facility: the Adeline Yen Mah Vaccine Center, which unites experts advancing next-generation mRNA, DNA and protein vaccines, and the Robert A. Mah Molecular Innovation Center, where researchers apply chemistry, biology and molecular engineering to pursue new treatments for cancer, infection and neurodegenerative disease.

Scientific excellence has long defined the couple’s lives. Robert A. Mah, professor emeritus at UCLA, studied bacteria that thrive in oxygen-free

environments, with one genus and two species named in his honor. Adeline Yen Mah, after a distinguished medical career, became a bestselling author with Falling Leaves: The True Story of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter, motivating millions with her message of perseverance through hardship.

I am overcome by hope, by the brilliance and dedication of those who labor here.

Mah

In 2007, they founded the Falling Leaves Foundation, inspired by the Chinese proverb “Falling leaves return to their roots.” It reflects their belief that giving is both gratitude and renewal, a return to the values that shaped them: learning, compassion and the quiet joy of giving back.

“As I walk through these laboratories,” said Adeline Yen Mah, “I am overcome by hope, by the brilliance and dedication of those who labor here to create a future for medicine that once belonged only in dreams.”

Through their philanthropy, the Mahs have not only strengthened UC Irvine’s research enterprise but also sown new seeds of healing for generations to come.

Elevating Outdoor Living with ReelTime Sight and Sound

There’s something about life in South Orange County that naturally unfolds outdoors. Maybe it’s the golden light that lingers a little longer.

Maybe it’s the way dinner drifts from the kitchen to the patio without a second thought. Here, the backyard isn’t an accessory — it’s an extension of home.

But transforming that space into something seamless, polished, and truly effortless? That’s where details multiply quickly.

You start with a television by the pool. Then you learn outdoor TVs must withstand heat, glare, coastal air, and moisture. You add speakers — but they need to blend into landscaping. Then lighting. Patio heaters. Strong Wi-Fi. Suddenly, what felt simple becomes layered with wiring questions, compatibility issues, and too many remotes.

That’s where Reel Time Sight and Sound comes in - quietly replacing complexity with clarity.

“We design outdoor spaces that feel effortless,” says Owner Jon Colburn. “Technology should enhance how you live. It shouldn’t complicate it.”

The Art of Outdoor Living

Outdoor living has evolved far beyond a grill and patio set. Today’s homeowners envision full environments — outdoor kitchens, covered lounges, poolside entertainment zones, and integrated audio and video systems that rival anything indoors.

Reel Time specializes in designing these spaces from the ground up.

Their weather-rated outdoor televisions are engineered for full sun, partial sun, or shaded installations — built specifically to resist extreme temperatures and glare while delivering crystalclear images in bright daylight.

Audio is approached just as thoughtfully. Rather than mounting bulky speakers on exterior walls, Reel Time installs discreet landscape systems. Satellite speakers blend into plantings, and in-ground subwoofers provide rich bass without visual clutter.

“The sound should feel natural,” Jon explains. “It shouldn’t feel like it’s com-

ing from a box on the wall. It should feel like it’s part of the space.”

From lively pool gatherings to quiet evenings with soft music under the stars, the system adapts with a simple tap.

Seamless Control, Inside and Out

One of Reel Time’s greatest strengths is integration. As a certified dealer of Control4, the company designs automation systems that unify indoor and outdoor living.

Lighting, music, televisions, motorized patio shades, heaters, security cameras, pool equipment, and gate access can all be managed through one elegant interface.

“You shouldn’t need five remotes and six apps,” Jon says. “We simplify everything so you can enjoy it.”

Outdoor Wi-Fi networks are another foundational piece. Reel Time engineers robust networking systems that eliminate dead zones, ensuring strong connectivity from the front driveway to the farthest edge of the backyard. In today’s world, seamless connectivity isn’t a luxury — it’s essential.

Beyond Entertainment: Complete Outdoor Environments

Outdoor living is about more than screens and speakers. Reel Time collaborates closely with homeowners, designers, and contractors to integrate technology into every layer of the environment, including:

• Smart landscape and architectural lighting

• Motorized patio shades and retractable screens

• Outdoor-rated security and surveillance systems

• Integrated pool and spa controls

• Fire feature and heater automation

• Whole-home audio that extends outdoors

Every component is selected with durability in mind. Coastal air and sun exposure demand professional-grade equipment and careful installation.

“We plan for longevity,” Jon says. “It’s not just about what looks beautiful on day one. It’s about what still works beautifully years from now.”

Bringing the Same Precision Indoors

While outdoor living is a signature focus, Reel Time provides comprehensive solutions for the entire home.

Custom home theaters and media rooms remain a cornerstone of their work, with acoustically engineered speaker placement, clean wiring, and custom cabinetry designed for both performance and aesthetics. Wholehome audio, smart lighting control, structured wiring, networking infrastructure, security systems, Frame TV installations, custom mounting solutions, and commercial audio/video systems for local businesses round out their offerings.

All designers and technicians are inhouse — licensed professionals who handle installation, programming, and final calibration with precision.

“You can buy great equipment anywhere,” Jon explains. “But if you can’t operate it easily, what’s the point?”

Home automation doesn’t have to happen all at once. Reel Time takes a thoughtful, phased approach, designing systems that grow alongside homeowners’ needs. Proper infrastructure can be installed during construction or remodeling, preventing costly retrofits later

Service That Stays

In an era of online ordering and outsourced installations, Reel Time’s relationship-driven approach stands apart. From initial design to long-term support, their team remains accessible. Systems are documented. Clients are trained thoroughly. Adjustments and upgrades are handled by professionals who know the project intimately.

The result isn’t simply technology.

It’s ease. It’s atmosphere. It’s stepping into your backyard and feeling like everything just works — beautifully, intuitively, and exactly as it should.

Join the Senior Living Discovery Tour Why Seeing Assisted Living in Person Changes Everything

When families begin exploring senior living options, the search often starts with what feels familiar. Residential board and care homes frequently come up early, especially when safety, daily support, or memory loss becomes a concern.

While these smaller settings can be appropriate in certain situations, they represent just one option in today’s expanding senior living landscape.

What many people don’t realize—until they experience it firsthand—is how dramatically assisted living and memory care communities have evolved. These are no longer institutional environments, but vibrant, thoughtfully designed communities focused on independence, connection and quality of life.

A Lifestyle Built Around Choice

One of the most noticeable differences is lifestyle. Modern assisted living communities are designed to support daily enjoyment as much as care needs. Residents have access to restaurant-style dining, fitness and wellness programs, transportation, and a full calendar of social and cultural activities.

With home maintenance, meal preparation, and daily logistics handled, residents are free to focus on living well—whether that means pursuing hobbies, making new friends, or simply enjoying a more relaxed pace of life.

Care That Adapts Over Time

Care in assisted living communities is flexible and scalable. Support with medications, bathing, dressing, or mobility can be added gradually as needs change, often without requiring a move to another setting.

Many communities also include dedicated memory care neighborhoods with specially trained staff, secure environments, and

structured routines designed to support residents living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. That continuity of care provides reassurance for both residents and their families.

Dining and Social Connection

Dining plays a central role in community life. Meals are prepared by professional chefs and served in welcoming dining rooms with flexible seating and menu options. Residents enjoy not only quality food, but the social connection that comes from sharing meals with friends.

These everyday interactions—over meals, activities, and events—often become the foundation of meaningful relationships and a strong sense of belonging.

Understanding the True Cost

Cost is understandably a key part of the conversation. Assisted living communities are sometimes assumed to be more expensive, but the reality is more nuanced. Monthly fees typically include housing, utilities, meals, transportation, activities, and access to care—expenses many people already manage separately while living independently.

When care needs increase, assisted living can be surprisingly competitive compared to the combined costs of in-home care, household upkeep, and ongoing services.

Why Seeing It in Person Matters

None of this is easy to fully grasp through brochures or websites alone. That’s why I host the Senior Living Discovery Tour, a guided, progressive tour designed to help

Inside the Mind of a Hoarder

UNDERSTANDING THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND THE DISORDER

Clutter has a way of creeping in quietly. A few boxes tucked away, papers meant for “someday,” sentimental items too meaningful to discard. Over time, those small accumulations grow, and what once felt manageable begins to weigh heavily.

For some, clutter is more than disorganization—it’s a visible expression of something deeper. Hoarding disorder, recognized by the psychiatric community, isn’t about laziness or lack of discipline. It’s often tied to anxiety, trauma, depression, or loss. Possessions can become emotional placeholders, offering comfort, control, or connection when life feels uncertain.

Studies consistently link excessive clutter to increased stress. Crowded spaces

overstimulate the brain, elevate cortisol levels, and make it harder to focus or rest. What should feel like a refuge becomes a daily reminder of unresolved decisions. Relationships suffer. Isolation grows. Stress multiplies.

This is where psychiatric care can make a meaningful difference. Therapy— particularly cognitive behavioral approaches—helps individuals explore the emotional attachments behind their belongings and build healthier coping strategies. In some cases, medication can reduce the anxiety or depression that fuels hoarding behaviors. The goal is compassion, not criticism.

Decluttering in this context isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating space— emotionally and mentally. With profes-

sional support, small, intentional steps can restore calm and a sense of control.

Our surroundings often reflect our inner lives. Addressing clutter without addressing mental health rarely works. But when care and understanding enter the picture, healing becomes possible—one cleared corner at a time.

Since 2012, Ocean View has specialized in stabilizing acute psychiatric symptoms for adults aged 18 and up—always putting choice, privacy and heartfelt care front and center. With 40 voluntary beds—most in private rooms—patients at Ocean View decide when and how they begin their journey to better health.

Four Generations Deep: How South County Pools Keeps

Orange County Swimming Smoothly

For as long as we’ve lived in South County, our pool has been more than a backyard feature—it’s where weekends unfold, where friends gather, where summer seems to linger just a little longer.

And for several years now, the quiet constant behind that enjoyment has been South County Pools.

As a longtime weekly service client, I can say without hesitation that the care of our pool has been exceptional. Yes, the water is always balanced. Yes, the equipment runs smoothly. But what stands out most is the reliability, the communication, and the unmistakable sense that someone genuinely takes pride in the work being done.

A Legacy Built on Family

Owned and operated by Sean Kosky, the company has served Orange County for more than a decade— but the family’s roots in the industry stretch back four generations. It began with Sean’s grandfather, Orville, who worked as a pool professional throughout the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. That knowledge was passed from father to son, and today the fourth generation remains actively involved.

What started as a family operation has grown into a comprehensive pool company offering residential and commercial construction, weekly pool and spa maintenance, equipment repair and replacement, energyefficient upgrades, and complete remodels. Everything is handled inhouse—a detail that speaks volumes about quality control and consistency.

Service That Shows Up

For families like mine, what truly sets this company apart is how they operate.

“Our business was built on family values, and that foundation still guides how we operate today,” Sean shares. “We believe the customer always comes first. We show up when we say we will, do the job thoroughly, and communicate honestly with our clients.”

As a customer, I see that philosophy play out week after week. Technicians are extensively trained before managing their own routes. The

company uses modern service software that provides real-time updates after each visit, including water chemistry readings and exactly what was added. That level of transparency is reassuring—especially when you’re trusting someone with a significant investment.

Sean himself grew up immersed in the industry, gaining handson experience with pool systems, equipment, and customer service from an early age. Over time, that foundation evolved into leading teams, overseeing complex builds and remodels, and upholding the standards set by the generations before him.

“A pool is a major investment, and working with a company that truly cares makes all the difference,” he says. “When you focus on doing quality work and building trust, everything else falls into place.”

From my perspective, that isn’t just talk. South County Pools has made pool ownership feel effortless. And that peace of mind allows us to simply enjoy it—exactly as it should be.

Where Commerce Meets Calling:

The Mission Behind Cutting Edge Auction Gallery

In a marketplace crowded with online auctions promising maximum return, Cutting Edge Auction Gallery offers something different—purpose.

Founded by longtime collector and entrepreneur Garrett Logan, the company blends decades of experience with a mission rooted not in profit alone, but in impact.

Cutting Edge as a corporation traces its history back 35 years, but the story truly spans four decades of collecting and just one year of formal auctioneering. That distinction matters to Logan. “This isn’t something I woke up and decided to do,” he says. “My life has been consumed with collecting stuff for more than 40 years. The auction platform simply became the right vehicle at the right time.”

Logan’s background is firmly grounded in business. He studied at Cal State Fullerton and spent years in the credit card processing industry, gaining a firsthand understanding of margins, systems, and how money actual ly moves. But his personal evolution

changed the direction of his professional life. “When the Lord changed my heart,” he explains, “I realized I needed to get rid of this meaningless stuff and use it as a venue to share the gospel.”

away from their environment and into something life-giving.”

At Cutting Edge, every transaction has the potential to serve a larger purpose. If a client consigns an item, 15 percent of the final sale is directed toward specific outreach efforts. If an item is donated outright, 75 percent goes toward those same causes. The company is transparent about its structure—Cutting Edge is not a 501(c)(3)—but the intent is clear.

That realization became the foundation of Cutting Edge Auction Gallery—a hybrid of commerce and conviction. While many auction companies focus solely on maximizing consignment profits, Logan chose a different model. “I believe there are a lot of auction companies set up strictly to sell consignment items for profit,” he says. “I do not think any other online auction company has a true interest in helping underage youth in places like Watts—getting them

The supported initiatives are deeply personal to Logan. One benefits Camp Oakhurst, a long-weekend camp experience designed to remove young people from difficult environments and expose them to faithbased mentorship. Another supports a youth group from Calvary Stockholm that travels to major cities throughout Sweden, meeting people on the streets and sharing the gospel in places where organized faith is often absent.

Visit CuttingEdgeAuctionGallery.com and you’ll find an eclectic mix of estate pieces, collectibles, art, and unique finds—items once gathered for personal passion now released with purpose. It’s a reflection of Logan himself: a collector transformed into a curator of opportunity.

“I’m not here to compete with the biggest auction houses,” Logan says. “I’m here to be obedient with what I’ve been given.”

In an industry driven by transactions, Cutting Edge Auctions is quietly redefining value—proving that what we let go of can matter just as much as what we acquire.

THE ART OF THE EXIT:

How The Deal Firm Is Redefining Business Brokerage in Southern California

In Southern California, where ambition is as much a lifestyle choice as surfboards and sunrise walks, owning a business is often deeply personal.

These are not just balance sheets and profit margins—they’re decades of early mornings, late nights, family sacrifices, and hardearned pride. And eventually, for every owner, the same quiet but monumental question arrives: What’s next?

That moment of reckoning is where The Deal Firm comes in.

A client-centered business brokerage and M&A firm with a distinctly human approach, The Deal Firm has built its reputation by rethinking an industry long plagued by inefficiency and detachment. Selling a business, after all, is rarely just a transaction. It’s a turning point. And according to the firm’s leadership, it deserves to be treated that way.

At the heart of The Deal Firm’s Southern California presence is Tom Burns, a broker whose credibility comes not from theory, but from lived experience. Burns joined The Deal Firm in 2008, but his story began long before brokerage. For 19 years, he owned and operated a garment manufacturing company in the Los Angeles apparel industry, managing 70 employees across five departments and working closely with banks, accountants, factors, and major retailers. Along the way, he also owned and sold three restaurants—one in Dana Point, one in Palm Springs, and another in Laguna Beach.

“That experience gave me the confidence to sit across the table from business owners and truly understand what they’re dealing with,” Burns says. “Their problems, their successes, the pressure— it’s familiar territory.”

brokers with decades of experience across multiple industries. “If one of us hasn’t sold a certain type of business before, you can be sure someone else on the team has,” he says. That collaborative approach allows clients to benefit from collective wisdom while still receiving individualized attention.

And attention is the point.

Burns’ path into brokerage was sparked by frustration. While searching online for a restaurant to purchase—at the same time he was running his manufacturing business— he found himself disappointed by the brokers he encountered. “I thought I could do a better job than these people,” he recalls. That dissatisfaction became motivation, and eventually, a calling.

Today, Burns has sold a remarkably diverse range of businesses, from mainstreet operations to mid-tier companies valued between $250,000 and $10 million. Restaurants, small manufacturing firms, fashion boutiques, law offices, hair salons, laundromats— even a fishing resort near Mammoth— each transaction different, each owner’s story deeply personal.

The Deal Firm’s strength lies in that diversity, and in the team behind it. Burns is quick to emphasize that he doesn’t work alone. The firm is intentionally small, made up of seasoned

The Deal Firm prides itself on creating an environment where clients feel comfortable sharing the “little secrets” of their businesses—the nuances that don’t show up on spreadsheets but can make or break a deal. That level of trust is essential when helping owners prepare for what is often the most significant financial decision of their lives.

Burns holds a B.S. in Business Management from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and an MBA from Long Island University, but he’ll tell you education only goes so far. What matters most is empathy. “I love talking to business owners,” he says. “Listening to their stories and helping them prepare an exit strategy—now or even years down the road.”

In a region defined by reinvention, The Deal Firm stands out by honoring what came before. With modern tools, transparent processes, and a deeply personal approach, the firm is redefining what it means to sell a business in Southern California— helping owners close one chapter with clarity, confidence, and the respect their life’s work deserves.

are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered precancerous because, if left alone, it could develop into skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed to the sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly, and some forms are tender to the touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. It is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, and it is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms, soles, under your nails, and places most have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check—it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs and the Ugly Duckling

A - Asymmetry: If you draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice, crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6 mm, i.e., the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full-body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

There are restaurants you visit for the food – and then there are places that make you want to linger, glass in hand, conversation flowing, the soundtrack of the evening just right. In Dana Point, Brio Tuscan Grille has quietly become one of those destinations. The Italian-inspired fare draws you in, but lately it’s the live entertainment that keeps you there a little longer on a Friday or Saturday evening out.

Brio’s elegant yet relaxed Tuscan-influenced setting – with its glowing lights, olive-wood accents, and breezy patio – makes you want to slow down. Add to that a carefully curated lineup of live music, and the restaurant feels less like a stop on the way to somewhere else and more like the place to be.

And March is shaping up to be a particularly special month for that blend of atmosphere, music, and that easy Dana Point vibe.

The calendar is dotted with performances that run the gamut from soulful crooners to upbeat grooves, giving diners something to anticipate whether it’s a casual dinner or a special night

• Millertime Boogie Band – delivers a high-energy mix of classic boogie-woogie and dance-ready rhythms

• Chandra and Dave – a dynamic duo whose blend of acoustic flair and thoughtful vocals feels perfectly suited to Brio’s patio nights.

• Cheryl Silverstein Live Jazz – a touch of smooth sophistication, perfect for those laid-back weeknight dinners or weekend wine pours.

• Garces and Gateani – musical storytellers whose engaging performances have quickly become a Brio favorite among locals and visitors alike.

This kind of programming doesn’t overwhelm the dining experience; it elevates it. You’ll hear familiar favorites and rediscovered gems that pair beautifully with Brio’s wood-grilled entrées, handcrafted pastas and coastal California wines. The music becomes part of the meal, part of the feeling of being

present and in good company – an ingredient as integral as olive oil or a perfectly balanced Negroni.

There’s warmth in Brio’s service and décor, and now warmth in its soundscape too. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely Friday dinner, a post-work respite with friends, or a special Saturday night out, the live music feels like part of the rhythm of South County itself – unhurried, soulful, and just right.

For March nights in Dana Point that call for good food, good music, and even better memories, Brio Tuscany Grille has found its perfect note.

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper: a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions.

Q Do I really need a wine fridge, or is a regular refrigerator okay?

A If you’re just keeping a bottle or two on hand for pizza night or the occasional celebration, your regular fridge is totally fine for short-term storage. Just don’t let that Sauvignon Blanc get lost behind the takeout for months!

For reds, you actually don’t need to keep them in the fridge at all. If you’re drinking them within a few weeks, just stash the bottles in a cool, dark spot—like a closet corner—and they’ll be perfectly happy. No fancy equipment required.

But if you’re planning to save bottles for more than a few weeks—especially reds, or anything you want to age—a wine fridge is a worthwhile upgrade. Wine fridges keep bottles at a steady, wine-friendly temperature (usually 50–60°F), with the right humidity and less vibration. Regular fridges are colder (great for milk, not for Merlot) and can dry out corks over time, which isn’t ideal for wine.

If you don’t have a wine fridge, just aim for a cool, steady spot away from sunlight and temperature swings— think closet, basement, or even a quiet corner. Avoid the kitchen (it gets too warm) and steer clear of anywhere near a heater or sunny window.

Bottom line: Consistency is more important than obsessing over the exact number. If your wine isn’t baking or freezing, you’re doing just fine.

Q Does wine have to be stored on its side—and why?

Bottom line: For casual sipping, your fridge (or closet!) works in a pinch. If you’re building a collection or want your wine to taste its best longterm, a wine fridge is the way to go. Most important? Don’t overthink it— just enjoy your next glass!

Q What’s the ideal temperature to store wine at home?

A The sweet spot for storing wine at home is between 50 and 60°F (10–16°C). Reds tend to like a little bit warmer temperatures—anywhere between 55 and 62°F—while whites prefer it a touch cooler, around 45 to 55°F. That’s if you’re planning on serving them almost right away.

To make life simple, you can store almost any wine at 52 to 55°F. The reds will just need about 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature to warm up before serving, and the whites might want to spend 10 to 15 minutes in a regular fridge to chill down a bit more.

A If your wine has a cork, storing it on its side is a classic move— and for good reason. Keeping the bottle sideways helps keep the cork moist, which prevents it from drying out and letting air sneak into the bottle (the sworn enemy of fresh wine). If the cork dries out, it can shrink and let oxygen in, which speeds up aging and can spoil the wine. A little contact with the wine keeps the cork swollen and airtight.

If your wine has a screw cap or synthetic cork, you can store it upright with no worries. Those closures don’t rely on moisture to keep a seal. But if you’re not sure, sideways is always a safe bet.

Bottom line: Sideways for corks, upright is fine for screw caps. If you want to impress your friends, just toss out a line about “proper cork hydration”—and you’ll sound like a pro.

Where Horsepower Meets Hospitality: Inside SoCal Classic Car Venue, Laguna Hills’ Most Unexpected Event Destination

An Entrance That Stops You Cold

There are event venues that impress—and then there are those that stop you in your tracks. SoCal Car Venue in Laguna Hills is firmly in the latter category. Step inside and it’s immediately clear this isn’t just a place to gather; it’s an experience. Polished steel, sculpted curves, and an extraordinary collection of automobiles set the tone for events that feel anything but ordinary.

Home to an enviable lineup of Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Alfa Romeos, Corvettes, Camaros, and other classic and exotic cars, the space blends high-octane

glamour with genuine warmth. The result is a venue where celebrations feel personal, intentional, and memorable.

From Storage Space to Signature Venue

“We officially launched our event venue business in late 2015,” says Jay Morash, Events and Digital Marketing Manager. “Like many businesses, we paused during the pandemic from 2020 through 2022. When we relaunched in 2023, we were very intentional about the types of events we wanted to host and the experience we wanted to offer.”

Today, SoCal Car Venue specializes in birthday celebrations, celebrations

of life, corporate events, and holiday gatherings—occasions where atmosphere matters just as much as logistics.

Cars as the Conversation

What truly sets the venue apart is the collection itself. Unlike traditional banquet halls or blank-slate industrial spaces, the cars here aren’t décor— they’re part of the storytelling. Each vehicle adds character and sparks conversation, appealing not only to serious car enthusiasts, but also to guests who appreciate craftsmanship and design.

“Aside from notable car museums, we believe we have one of the nicest

car collections in Southern California,” Jay says. “No matter who walks through the door, there’s always something that catches their eye.”

Freedom to Create Your Own Experience

Another defining feature of SoCal Car Venue is its flexibility—something increasingly rare in the event world.

“We give our clients complete control,” Jay explains. “They can bring in any caterer or vendor without extra fees. They can rearrange the layout, move furniture, and even bring in a few of their own cars. It’s their event—we’re here to support their vision, not limit it.”

That freedom makes the space especially appealing for corporate clients seeking a distinctive off-site setting, as well as families planning milestone birthdays or meaningful celebrations of life. The venue adapts effortlessly, whether the tone is polished and professional or intimate and reflective.

Experience That Shows

Behind the scenes, Jay and his father, Dean, bring backgrounds in marketing, sales, and event-driven environments—particularly within the tech sector. That experience translates into a keen understanding of flow,

guest experience, and the small details that elevate an event from good to exceptional.

Clients frequently remark on how seamless the process feels. Testimonials consistently highlight the venue’s uniqueness, the accommodating team, and the lasting impression it leaves on guests—many of whom are still talking about the cars long after the event ends.

Thoughtful Amenities, Curated Events

SoCal Car Venue also offers practical amenities to simplify planning, including tables, chairs, and audio equipment available for rent. The team is transparent about what they do—and don’t—host. By not booking quinceañeras, bar or bat mitzvahs, high school dances, or baby showers, they maintain a curated calendar and a consistent experience aligned with the space.

“Our goal is simple,” Jay says. “We want to help people create lifetime memories.”

A Venue That Dares to Be Different

That philosophy is evident throughout the space. This isn’t a venue designed to churn through events—it’s one created for moments that matter. In a region filled with beautiful venues, SoCal Car Venue stands out by delivering something rare: an experience with style, substance, and soul.

Sometimes the most unforgettable celebrations happen where you least expect them—surrounded by engines, elegance, and stories waiting to be shared.

Owner Dean Morash and Jay Morash, Events and Digital Marketing Manager.

Holding On to What Matters Most

When families welcome us into their homes, it is often during one of the most tender seasons of life. Hospice is about comfort, dignity and peace—but it is also about love. And love doesn’t end when a life does. It lingers in stories, in photographs, in the way someone laughed, prayed, cooked or held your hand.

At Community Care Hospice, we believe caring for a patient also means helping families cherish the moments that remain—and preserve the memories that will follow.

So often, loved ones tell me their greatest fear isn’t just loss. It’s forgetting. The sound of Dad’s voice. The way Mom signed her cards. The stories Grandpa told about his childhood. That’s why memory-making has become such a meaningful part of what we do.

Our team helps families create keepsakes that become treasured heirlooms. Hand molds and fingerprint charms. Quilts from a loved one’s clothing. We help assemble photo albums and printed memory books that capture a life well lived. For some families, we can help record legacy videos—gentle conversations where a parent or grandparent shares advice, blessings and stories in their own words.

These aren’t just projects. They are gifts. They give families something tangible to hold when the house feels quiet. They allow grandchildren yet to be born to know the voice and heart of someone they never met.

For me, this work is deeply personal. My mother, Vivian, founded the original Community Care Hospice in 2003. I grew up watching her sit at kitchen tables, hold hands, and guide families through sacred moments with grace. When she was lat-

er diagnosed with terminal cancer, I saw hospice from the other side—as a daughter. I experienced firsthand how meaningful compassionate, personalized care can be.

Continuing her legacy here in South Orange County is both an honor and a calling.

What sets Community Care Hospice apart is our commitment to truly individualized care. We build a local, multidisciplinary team of nurses, physicians, chaplains, social workers and trained volunteers who actively listen—to the patient and to the family. Every care plan is thoughtfully designed around physical comfort, emotional support and spiritual peace.

We are especially proud of our holistic approach to pain management. In addition to traditional medical care, we incorporate complementary therapies that promote calm and comfort—all at no cost to the patient or their loved ones. Our goal is simple: to ease suffering and create space for meaningful connection.

We are also deeply honored to serve veterans, with certified military chaplains and volunteers who understand the unique experiences of those who have served our country.

Hospice is not about giving up. It is about embracing what matters most. It is about sitting a little longer, saying the words that need to be said, and preserving the stories that deserve to be told.

At Community Care Hospice, we strive to set a higher bar for end-oflife care—one rooted in dignity, compassion and legacy. Because every life is extraordinary. And every family deserves the chance to hold on to what matters most.

It’s

A Milestone for Sure… TURNING 65.

The most common method of enrolling for Medicare Part A and Part B is using the Social Security website: www.ssa.gov (or you can call 800-772-1213 to make an appointment to apply over the phone).

This is only if you’re not taking Social Security earlier than your fully vested age. You’ll get your Medicare card automatically if you are already taking Social Security early (You can start Social Security at age 62). If this is the case, your Medicare card will arrive about 3-4 months before the month of your birthday.

For those of you not taking Social Security early, you’ll want to start the Medicare Part A & B application process 3 months before your birthday month to make sure you’re good to go on the first day of the month that you turn 65 (unless you’re born on the 1st, then you get to go on Medicare one month early).

Once you apply for Medicare you will receive a letter in a few weeks from Social Security saying they’ve received your application, and it was approved.

Then a second letter arrives, and it gives you your Medicare number and that letter then tells you that you’ll be receiving your Medicare card in a few weeks. This is a big milestone financially for most because of the cost of their health insurance if they are paying for it privately (group insurance can be expensive too however). Most people (who am I kidding; this applies to everyone) can hardly wait to start saving money (At age 64 rates are over $1500 a month for true health insurance coverage. Once you get your “Original Medicare” card (paper; red, white and blue with an eleven-digit random alpha-numeric combination and a Part A and Part B effective date on it); you have choices to make.

Medicare alone is not enough, and that’s where I come in to help you understand your Medicare options. Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare

Supplement (Medi-gap) plans and Medicare Drug plans are complex and the fact that you can have my knowledge (at no cost to you) to help you decide the right choice for you at this “decision dilemma” in your life will give you peace of mind. Much of my consultation time is going through the appropriate steps of someone just getting their Medicare active, understanding what IRMAA is (most living in Orange County have it and must pay more than the base Medicare Part B premium.) And learning how form SSA-44 can help them not overpay for their Medicare Part B and Part D. This really has nothing to do with my profession because I’m an insurance broker, not a government employee. But understanding these initial steps seem to be the most daunting for most that I meet with and I am happy to help educate them on more than just Medicare insurance.

Stephanie Frisch is the owner of Insurance 101 and is an independent insurance broker dedicated to helping others make “educated decisions” about their insurance choices when it comes to Medicare. For answers to your questions, or no-fee consultation, call 949-292-4958.

When Smart Dental Care Knows No Borders: A HebeDoc Experience

In a region where choice is abundant and expectations are high, healthcare decisions are no longer driven solely by proximity or tradition. At the heart of that conversation is a reality many struggle to reconcile: how treatment abroad can cost significantly less and still deliver exceptional quality. The answer, quite simply, is overhead—and HebeDoc exists precisely at that intersection.

Rather than positioning medical and dental care outside the U.S. as a gamble, HebeDoc reframes it as a guided experience grounded in economics as much as expertise. The company connects American patients with carefully vetted medical and dental providers abroad, handling every detail—from transportation and lodging to pricing and care coordination—so the focus remains on quality, not confusion. Lower costs aren’t the result of cutting corners, but of dramatically lower monthly overhead compared to U.S. practices.

For Beverly Hills restaurateur Len Hayashi, the idea wasn’t born out of bargain-hunting, but discernment. A seasoned traveler and thoughtful decision-maker, Hayashi has built his success by questioning assumptions— particularly the belief that higher price

tags automatically signal better care. Understanding that a Los Angeles dental office may carry $50,000 to $60,000 in monthly overhead, while a comparable practice in Mexico operates under $20,000, reframed the conversation entirely.

A Conversation with Len Hayashi

South County Magazine: How did you first learn about HebeDoc?

Len Hayashi: I heard about HebeDoc through another successful business owner in Beverly Hills who casually mentioned having dental work done in Mexico—and said he wouldn’t go back to the U.S. That stopped me. I’m financially secure, but I’m careful about how I spend money. I’ve traveled extensively, and the truth is, the U.S. isn’t the best at everything—especially when it comes to dentistry.

SCM: Did you have reservations about having dental work done outside the U.S.?

Hayashi: Of course. We’re conditioned to assume healthcare abroad is inferior. But my experience in Los Angeles pushed me to question that. After waiting weeks to see an endodontist, his diagnostic test was literally blowing air on my tooth and asking if it hurt. Then he quoted me $1,800 for a root canal that he would have performed naked eye, without the benefit of high-tech equipment. That felt excessive. HebeDoc addressed my concerns with transparency—clear credentials, clear pricing, and a process designed for Americans who expect professionalism.

SCM: What work did you have done, and how was the experience?

Hayashi: I initially had a root canal, and I’ve since returned for more extensive work for myself and family. The coordination was seamless. I knew the exact cost before crossing the border—no surprises. My Mexican endodontist –trained in Germany - spoke excellent English, didn’t talk down to me and prioritized comfort. His technology impressed me most: a $50,000 surgical microscope with 30X magnification, CT imaging—far more advanced than many U.S. offices I’ve seen.

SCM: How did the facility compare to U.S. clinics?

Hayashi: Better, honestly. The equipment was state-of-the-art, and unlike the U.S., crowns didn’t require multiple visits. In Molar City, where there are hundreds of dentists and labs, crowns can be made in hours instead of weeks.

SCM: How significant were the cost differences?

Hayashi: Dramatic. That $1,850 root canal in LA cost $400 through HebeDoc. My mother was quoted $37,000 in the U.S. for Emax crowns—$14,500 through HebeDoc. My father needed his upper arch replaced: $44,000 in Southern California versus $12,000 using Straumann implants, the global gold standard.

SCM: Anything else readers should know?

Hayashi: HebeDoc handled everything—car service to the Yuma border, a beautiful Airbnb, all included. Like many people, I worried about quality and safety. But HebeDoc guided us every step of the way, and the results were exceptional.

I

Turning 65. It’s A Milestone for Sure…

Turning 65 is a big milestone in a person’s life. For most, it’s also the time to apply for Medicare. Most commonly now you apply for Medicare Part A and Part B on the Social Security website.

I’m told by my clients that are new to Medicare that they feel fortunate to have me “hold their hand” and help them through the process. I will “hold your hand” too if you want my assistance as you face this dilemma of decisions. Much of my consultation time is going through the appropriate steps of someone just getting their Medicare active. This really has nothing to do with my profession because I’m an insurance broker, not a government employee. But this seems to be the most daunting step for most that I meet with.

You can enroll in Medicare online by going to SSA.gov. You’ll see the word, “Medicare” and below that it will read, “Sign Up for Medicare”. From there you’ll click on the blue rectangle that reads, “apply online”. Then select, “start a new application”. Follow the prompts pertinent to you and you’ll be done in no time!

You’ll want to start this process 3 months before your birthday month to make sure you’re good to go on the first day of the month that you turn 65 (unless you’re born on the 1 st , then you get to go on Medicare one month early).

Medicare alone is not enough, and that’s where I come in to help you understand your Medicare options. Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement (Medi-gap) plans and Medicare Drug plans are complex and the fact that you can have my knowledge (at no cost to you) to help you decide the right choice for you at this milestone in your life will give you peace of mind that you deserve for someone facing such a big birthday milestone.

One Season at a Time

How Knott’s Peanuts Celebration Grows With a Family

There are places that quietly thread themselves through a family’s life, marking time not by dates but by stages. For our family, Knott’s Berry Farm has always been one of those places. From the years when our kids were barely steady on their feet – clutching our hands as they stared wide-eyed at Camp Snoopy –to their teenage years, when independence mattered more than proximity, Knott’s has remained a constant. So when I recently attended Knott’s Peanuts Celebration, it felt less like covering an event and more like stepping back into a shared family scrapbook.

The Peanuts Celebration is, at its core, a love letter – to Charles Schulz’s beloved characters, to simple joys, and to the kind of wholesome fun that doesn’t need reinvention. Throughout the park, Snoopy and the gang are everywhere, not as nostalgic window dressing, but as active participants in the day. Costumed characters mingle easily with guests, posing for photos, dancing impromptu, and reminding you that joy doesn’t have to be complicated. One of the highlights was It’s Your Life, Charlie Brown, a charming stage show that blends humor, music, and a gentle emotional arc. Watching families

settle into their seats – parents with coffee in hand, kids buzzing with anticipation – I was struck by how rare it is to find entertainment that genuinely works across generations. The jokes land for adults, the physical comedy delights younger kids, and the heart of it all – friendship, perseverance, and a little self-doubt – feels timeless.

Elsewhere, live music and interactive activities fill the park with an easy rhythm. There are hands-on craft stations where kids can color, create, and linger – something Knott’s has always done well. It’s never been just about rides; it’s about giving families permission to slow down together. As our kids grew older, those moments shifted from crafts to coasters, but the feeling remained the same: shared experience, shared memory.

Food, of course, plays its part. Limited-time Peanuts-themed treats add a playful layer to the day, from sweet indulgences to comforting classics. Knott’s has long understood that food is part of the experience, not an afterthought. It’s another reason families return year after year – because traditions taste familiar.

Walking through the park during the celebration, I couldn’t help but reflect on how Knott’s has grown with us. When our children were toddlers, it

was a manageable adventure – small enough to feel safe, varied enough to feel exciting. In their elementary years, it became a place of milestones: first “big kid” rides, first independent steps away from us. In their teenage years, Knott’s offered freedom – space to roam with friends, thrills that matched their growing confidence, and a shared place we could still meet at the end of the day.

The Peanuts Celebration taps into that same philosophy. It’s not flashy or overproduced. It doesn’t chase trends. Instead, it leans into what Knott’s has always done best: creating experiences that feel genuine, accessible, and rooted in tradition. In an era where family entertainment often feels fragmented by age and interest, Knott’s continues to prove that there’s value in gathering everyone in the same place, for the same reason – to simply enjoy being together.

Leaving the park, I realized that while the kids may no longer need us to hold their hands, Knott’s still holds space for us as a family. And that’s what makes celebrations like this matter. They aren’t just events on a calendar; they’re reminders of why places like Knott’s Berry Farm endure – because they grow alongside us, one season at a time.

Simplifying the Cost of In-Home Care

When a loved one needs in-home support, most families know exactly what they’re hoping for: safety, comfort, dignity, and compassionate care. What they often don’t know is how to pay for it.

Between private insurance, longterm care policies, out-of-pocket expenses, and even Veterans Affairs benefits, the financial side of caregiving can feel just as overwhelming as the emotional side. That’s where Home Helpers of Orange Coast sets itself apart.

For the past 15 years, the agency has become more than a trusted provider of in-home care. It has become a steady, knowledgeable guide for families navigating unfamiliar territory.

“About 75 percent of my calls are from people just looking for information,” says Owner Dwight Brown. “Caregiving is emotional enough. People shouldn’t also have to struggle to understand what help they qualify for.”

The Hidden Support Many Veterans Overlook

One of the most significant—and most misunderstood—resources available to families is through the

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Many veterans and their loved ones don’t realize the VA may fully cover non-medical in-home care services.

This can include assistance with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, mobility, medication reminders, and companionship—services that make it possible for seniors to remain safely at home.

“I can’t tell you how many veterans or their children have no idea these benefits exist,” Dwight says. “When we explain that the VA may pay for the care they need, the relief is immediate. They go from stressed to hopeful in minutes.”

Home Helpers works directly with the VA, helping families coordinate benefits and navigate the paperwork. For those already balancing doctor’s appointments and changing health needs, having an advocate who understands the system can make all the difference.

Experience That Simplifies the Process

While VA benefits can be lifechanging, they are just one piece of the puzzle. Home Helpers also works closely with private insurance providers, longterm care insurance plans, and families paying privately.

Dwight’s earlier career with respected healthcare organizations such as CareMore and SCAN Health Plan gave

him an insider’s understanding of how coverage systems function. That experience informs the way his agency operates today—combining heartfelt caregiving with administrative clarity.

“We’ve seen every type of care imaginable,” he says. “Because of that experience, we know how to make the process easier, faster and far less overwhelming.”

It’s a rare blend: compassion paired with practical expertise

Of course, payment options matter— but so does the care itself.

Home Helpers of Orange Coast maintains one of the largest caregiver networks in the region, allowing the team to thoughtfully match each client with a caregiver whose personality, experience and style align with the family’s needs.

“Caregiving is deeply personal,” Dwight says. “A great match feels like family—not a formal arrangement.”

For families searching for reliable, compassionate, and financially accessible in-home support, Home Helpers of Orange Coast stands ready to guide the way—with heart, experience, and a sincere commitment to serving those who once served us.
