STEPS TO UNLOCKING YOUR HEART HEALTH
Prioritize heart health with expert guidance on lifestyle choices, diet, and quitting smoking for a vibrant, fulfilling life.
Cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, remain the leading causes of death in seniors. Because of this, I help my patients who are age 55 and over understand and prioritize their heart health at Greater Newport Physicians MemorialCare. By identifying key risk factors and adopting heart-healthy habits, they can significantly reduce their risk and enhance their overall well-being.
As we age, several factors contribute to the development of cardiovascular events, with high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, diabetes, smoking, and obesity being among the most significant risk factors. These conditions can damage blood vessels, increase the likelihood of plaque buildup in arteries, and elevate the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Fortunately, many risk factors for cardiovascular events can be mitigated through proactive lifestyle choices, even as seniors. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and quitting smoking are crucial steps in reducing cardiovascular risk.
By engaging in low impact activities like gardening, tai chi, and walking, seniors can enjoy the physical and mental benefit of regular exercise while promoting heart health and overall well-being. I encourage seniors to choose activities they enjoy and can sustain over time, making exercise a rewarding and sustainable part of their lifestyle.
It’s never too late to learn new healthy eating habits. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins can lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, and promote overall heart health. Limiting intake of saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars is equally important for seniors in reducing their risk of experiencing cardiovascular events and maintaining better heart health as they age.
For seniors, smoking poses a myriad of dangers to heart health and overall well-being. The chemicals in tobacco smoke damage the lining of blood vessels, leading to the buildup of plaque and narrowing of the arteries. Smoking also reduces oxygen levels in the blood, strains the heart, and contributes to the development of high blood pressure.
Seniors should be vigilant in recognizing warning signs for early intervention and treatment. Symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, fatigue, and dizziness should not be ignored and warrant prompt medical attention.
Regular check-ups are also essential for monitoring my senior patients' blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and additional risk factors. With education, personalized risk assessments, and collaborative goal setting, my goal is to empower them with the knowledge and tools they need to prioritize their heart health.

The Rewards of Being a Caregiver
By Jim Kordenbrock Jr., Gerontologist and Michelle Thomas
We want to let you in on one of the best kept career secrets about why paid caregivers love what they do! Caregivers use words to describe their job such as “meaningful, powerful, life-changing, positive impact, and rewarding.” So, what’s this great secret of being a paid caregiver? Here it is- the Caregiver creates a special relationship and bond with the older adult they help, sometimes becoming closer than any family member. Many families thank the Caregiver for being so kind and compassionate in giving so much to the older adult they helped. But, if we’re being candid, the person receiving the most reward is the Caregiver! The caregiver has spent weeks, months, and even years learn-
ing from the older adult they cared for at one of the most important times in their (end of) life.
Imagine the reward in helping to make an aging adult’s life better while allowing them to age with dignity and respect. It’s about providing a sense of comfort, safety, security, and independence to older adults while never allowing them to feel abandoned. Imagine being with an older adult at their end-of-life, and the relief of that special older person knowing that you were there for them until their final breath. As the great Harvey Mackay says, “the quality of your life is determined by the quality of your relationships.” This is a profession that truly comes from the
heart. It doesn’t matter about your socioeconomic status, education, career, accomplishments, or life experience. You will succeed if you truly want to make a difference to an older adult. Caregivers are the few, the proud, the compassionate giants!
Several studies have shown the positive impact of being a paid caregiver. Specifically, improved physical health, a sense of purpose and satisfaction, leading to an increase in mental well-being, and enhanced social connections, reducing loneliness and isolation.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any experience. That’s right, you only need the heart and desire to help an aging adult. Most reputable agencies have wonderful training programs to teach you the best ways to support an aging adult, allowing you to gain the confidence and skills to become a successful caregiver as a client’s needs advance.
So, what does it take to be a great Caregiver? Here are some thoughts on the characteristics of great Caregivers. The chances are you already have many of these qualities!
1. Character. Your DNA must be driven by a servant mentality characterized by compassion, empathy, and a powerful desire to serve others.
2. Empathy. You must have the ability to understand the person you are taking care of, the impact of their life course on what makes them who they are today, what drives them, their personality, their idiosyncrasies, and their family dynamics.
3. Patience. The biggest challenge is having patience and compassion while caring for an aging adult, especially those living with dementia, who at times express their frustration through actions and words that can feel cruel or hurtful.
4. Dependability. You cannot be late for a client, not even one minute. The client is waiting for you and if it is an early shift, they will be lying in bed waiting for you to help them start their day.
5. Adaptability. No two days are the same despite a lot of routine tasks. You must be able to think on your feet. You also must be ready for any type of curve ball that will come your way. The client may be talkative or want some quiet timeyou must recognize that and adapt accordingly based on their needs.
6. Anticipation. It is critical to be proactive and anticipate needs, look around, and always put the client first, based on what is important to them.
7. Trustworthy. You must have their best interest at heart with the highest level of integrity. You may be exposed to some very privileged information, some of which no one else in the world may even know about. You may also be asked to help with their finances, paying bills or other sensitive information. The key is that the client must trust the caregiver.
The current growth rate of the U.S. population over age 65 is unprecedented, at 48% between now and 2050 according to populationpyramid.net, and thus the need for caregivers will continue to rise dramatically. We need compassionate, kind, loving caregivers who enjoy working with older adults. It takes a special person to be a caregiver, but the benefits are tremendously rewarding and healthy for you. Being a paid caregiver will likely be the most rewarding career you will ever have.

Perspectives from Enduring Couples at The Covington, an ECS Senior Living Community in Aliso Viejo
Every marriage has its story, and the longer the marriages, the richer the stories. Four longterm couples at The Covington, an independent senior living community in Aliso Viejo, reflect on their marriages for the month of February celebrating love.
Beth and Barry Lamont
In the mid-1960s, Barry was an Air Force officer when he volunteered to attend the Government language school in Monterey, California. He signed up to learn Korean, “and I was lucky enough to get in,” Barry says.
After graduation, one of his fellow officers in language school was assigned to Seoul. “He preceded me,” Barry says, “and by the time I got there, he was already engaged to be married.” It was at his fellow officer’s wedding that Barry spotted Beth. “We kind of clicked,” he says, “but she was very reluctant to be seen with me, because in those days respect-
able Korean women did not openly date men.” When they saw each other, Beth would bring a couple of her friends along with her, so no one would know who Barry was with. “We had a courtship in secret,” he says.
One of Barry’s language teachers from Monterey was Beth’s relative. The teacher wrote a letter of introduction for Barry to Beth’s family, and they allowed Beth to date him. Barry and Beth were married within the year.
Barry was transferred to Japan, where they had their two daughters. When he mustered out of the Air Force three years later, Barry went to Harvard for his MBA. His first job out of business school was with a bank in Chicago. “I joined them because they were starting up a Korean office,” he says. And within a year the couple were back in South Korea. During their time in Seoul, they went through a marriage course in the Catholic church. “It’s to make good marriages better,” Barry says. “You learn the importance of forgiving and having compassion for each other.’”
They have called The Covington home for two years. Barry smiles, saying that Beth “has blossomed here. Her paintings were on exhibition in the lobby.” The supportive community that they sought throughout their travels, they have now found at The Covington.
Barbara and Mark Pray
Barbara and Mark met through their work in 1978. Barbara was managing a bank in Fullerton, and Mark, originally from Michigan, had recently moved to Southern California as an HR Manager. “He came in to open an account,” Barbara says. A few weeks later, he came back. “He wanted to talk to me about other bank services,” she says. Barbara recalls that as he left, she thought to herself that he was a really nice guy. “And I thought, I hope he feels the same way about me.” A week later, Barbara came back from lunch to find a note on her desk, asking her to call Mark Pray. The phone call resulted in a dinner invitation.
Beth and Barry Lamont - Wedding, 1968
were married. So you went through the college system as a married couple,” Vi says. They had their first daughter when Vi was just 19.
“So we go for dinner,” Barbara says, “and he’s in HR. The dinner was nice but he asked HR questions.” She laughs, describing the dinner like an interview. Clearly Mark approved of her responses to his questions, as about a month later, he asked Barbara to marry him. It was to be the second marriage for both of them, and they decided to visit a Minister Barbara knew in Laguna Hills to discuss the type of wedding they wanted. “The Minister talked to us for a while, and then he said ‘I think you’re a perfect couple. When do you want to set the date?’ and I thought, well, why not now?” So Barbara and Mark got married right then and there!
They both had daughters from their previous marriages, and Barbara recalls how they all got on well. “And we’ve been married for over 46 years now,” she says.
Mark reflects on what they’ve learned over the years, to establish a solid marriage. “Figure out what you both like to do and then do it together frequently,” he says. “And be honest with each other. And if something is not working the way you think it should, take the time to talk about it.”
The intuition that inspired their short courtship also inspired their decision to move to The Covington two years ago. They knew right away they
liked it. The size, location and nonprofit nature of the organization was important to them. “When you know, you know,” Mark says. Barbara adds, “Most importantly, we find the neighbors here are friendly, active, and positive; and the team, personable and professional.”
Vi and Jim Ritchie
The Ritchies grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. They started dating in their Senior year in high school and were married after their Freshman year in College in 1958. “Back then, there were a lot of couples our age who
Being married and having children at a young age Jim says, “we grew up together.” They moved to Southern California for Jim’s job, which he describes as a good move. Removed from families and friends, they had to dig in and make the marriage work.
Barbara and Mark Pray
Vi and Jim Ritchie
“Change generates growth,” Jim says, and the move allowed them to grow together even more.
When their parents were aging, they returned to Phoenix where Vi’s career began to flourish. She eventually became the President of the Arizona chapter of a national organization of marketing professional services. “It’s something she couldn’t have done when we were raising our children,” Jim says.
Jim was offered a job as a Superintendent of a school district in the Bay Area, and they moved again. When it was time for retirement, they returned to Southern California.
Looking back on their 66 years together, Jim reflects on all the transitions they have navigated. “The other person may not always be in the same place where you are, but it’s important to understand what’s going on during those times with your partner and support them as best you can.”
Jim says that their move to The Covington nine months ago has been another form of transition for them. “Here, we both have an opportunity to grow through community.”
Joni and Bob Arnold
Joni & Bob Arnold grew up in Minnesota, and in 1974 they were set up by a mutual friend. Bob was 29 at the time, and Joni was 27. “We both had been in relationships, so we knew what we wanted,” Bob explains. When Bob first saw Joni, he thought she was “cute and short.” And Joni thought he was “cute and funny,” they laugh as they recall their first impressions.
On their first date, he went to her apartment for dinner. She put a frozen pizza in the oven and forgot to remove the cardboard from its bottom. But something clicked beyond the pizza, as their second date was just two days later. By the end of the week, Bob mentioned that they should get married, and on Monday they went ring shopping. So, within five days, they went from first date to engagement. They were married six months later.
Bob says that Joni can always find the good in people, which served her well in her career as a social worker in Minneapolis. Bob’s work in the aerospace industry took them to Virginia,

They’ve been at The Covington for just over a year. “Joni’s involved in everything,” he says. Bob appreciates that they can be as active as they want to be. Looking back on their 50 years together, Bob reflects that the small disagreements don’t mean much. “They just kind of evaporate.” What surprises Bob the most is that “the time just goes by so fast.”

TIPS FOR FILING YOUR
INDIVIDUAL & BUSINESS TAX RETURNS
By Peter D. Prescott, CPA and Grant Prescott, CPA, CFP®
Based upon recent hiring of thousands of IRS agents and their increased audit activity, we can’t think of a more important time to have your tax returns prepared by a professional CPA firm. It is critical that you remove the guesswork when you prepare your tax returns. Our firm is ready to review your unique situation to determine if any of the following tax planning ideas should be implemented.
INDIVIDUALS
1. Based upon the heightened and ongoing ID Theft and Fraud concerns which will not go away, we highly recommend that each taxpayer obtain an IRS Identity Protection PIN from the IRS at irs.gov/ IPPIN to immediately get your PIN. You must give this PIN number to your tax preparer so they can electronically file your tax returns. For future tax years, the IRS will provide you with a new IP PIN for each new tax year for this purpose.
2. Pay careful attention to the Tax Filing Deadlines: Due Date & (Extension Deadlines). S Corporation and Partnership returns are due on March 17 (Extensions Sept. 15). Individual, Trust and C Corporation returns are due on April 15 (Extensions for Individual & C Corps on Oct. 15 and Trusts on Sept. 30).
3. Taxpayers age 70.5 or older can contribute to charities up to $108,000 directly out of their IRA for Tax Year 2025. This reduces AGI and most likely will lower your tax bill. This is a huge tax savings if you are taking the Standard Deduction and no longer claiming charitable deductions.
4. If you had or will have a large capital gain, consider investing in a “Qualified Opportunity Zone” within 180 days of sale or exchange to defer and partially eliminate the initial capital gain in addition to having the potential of eliminating taxation on appreciation on the new investment property.
5. Anyone who receives employer stock options should seek a CPA for tax preparation. The Form 1099-B you receive may not correctly report your cost basis and many taxpayers mistakenly pay tax twice on the gains.
6. California tax laws have little conformity to the new Federal tax laws. Due to the differences in Federal and California law, it is quite possible that you will take the Standard Deduction on your Federal Return and Itemize for your California Return. More importantly, consider bunching itemized deductions into one year so these deductions will exceed the standard deduction for additional savings. An important example: Alimony Paid is deductible on your California return and income to the recipient even when the Alimony is not deductible or taxable for Divorces after December 31, 2018.
7. Taxpayers can change the tax treatment on their IRA contributions as late as the extension deadline for determining if their timely contribution will be treated as PreTax (Traditional), After-Tax (Roth IRA or Non-Deductible IRA). This is important to review prior to finalizing your returns. Contributions levels have increased, too. For 2025, only The IRS (not CA) allows the “Super-Catch Up” Pension Contribution up to an extra $11,250 (instead of the normal $7,500) for taxpayers age 60 to 63.
8. IRS and CA both offer one-time late filing or payment penalty taxpayer abatements. You can request this every 4 years with the IRS for individuals, businesses, trusts and estates. CA allows it just one time and it is only for Individuals.
9. Consider reducing your Medicare Premium Surcharge by keeping your Modified Adjusted Gross Income under specific income levels. A $1 difference can translate to an extra $164 up to $1,030 in annual premiums. More importantly, when notified that you have a premium increase, consider filing Form SSA-44 or
call 800-772-1213 to report a life changing event that can reduce or eliminate the additional Medicare Premium Surcharge (IRMA).
10. Residential Rental Income for 14 days or less is not taxable income. This is often called the “Augusta Rule.” Review with your CPA to see if it applies to your home.
BUSINESSES
1. Although the New Beneficial Ownership Reporting Requirements are still in flux, we recommend new entities prepare and file within 30 days of creation and immediately for existing entities.
2. Review to see if a 401k, SEP-IRA or Defined Benefit Plan is the most beneficial plan for saving pre or after tax. Plans and new increased contributions can now be established/paid for Tax Year 2024 as late as the extended due date for your return in 2025.
3. Important to review your Meals and Entertainment expenses in detail. For Federal purposes, Entertainment is no longer deductible (tickets and entertainment events). For California tax purposes, Entertainment expenses and Meals per above are deductible at 50%. Therefore, be sure to deduct Entertainment expense on your California return. For Business Meals, Travel Meals and Staff Meals for the Benefit of the Employer, these costs are deductible at 50% by both Federal and California. Additionally, Staff Holiday Parties are 100% deductible by Federal and California.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.
The Benefits of Using a Local Senior Living Advisor
Whether you are planning ahead or finding yourself faced with an urgent need, the process of finding the right assisted living or memory care community can feel like a daunting task.
How do you know which community will be the right fit? Will your loved one be able to receive the care and attention they need? How do you find the best situation given your budget?
Most of us would do what we normally do nowadays when we need to figure out something new – we Google it. At the very top of any Google search for “assisted living” or “memory care” will be several national web-based companies who promise to help you figure out the options and find the perfect fit.
Many people will gladly enter their phone number and email address in order to receive their custom list of curated options, only to find that these online companies are really just data aggregators, meaning that they will take your information and blast it out to every assisted living facility in the area, or they will sell your information to other advertisers.
Then suddenly, you are receiving 2030 phone calls a day from sales representatives who want you to come in for a tour. And you’re right back to feeling overwhelmed and lost in a sea of options.
Another disadvantage of using a national web-based company is that they often make questionable recommendations. In a recent article by the Washington Post, it was discovered that 37.5% of one company’s recommendations were found to have major safety and care violations. Yet those recommendations had scored high on the web-based company’s internal measuring system.
A local senior living advisor is the better choice when facing such a chal-
lenging decision. Here are some of the benefits of a local senior living advisor:

More Prescription Drug Savings Coming in 2026
There are a few other changes to prescription drug plans on the horizon. In 2024, Medicare negotiated for the first time the prices of 10 of the most commonly used and expensive prescription drugs. The lower prices take effect in 2026 and are expected to save people enrolled in Medicare an estimated $1.5 billion in outof-pocket costs in 2026 alone.
The first 10 drugs with negotiated prices include:
In 2025, Medicare will select an additional 15 drugs covered under Part D to negotiate prices that will become available in 2027, and more medications will be negotiated each year beyond that.

Have You Been Struggling with Depression That Just Won’t Lift?
Introducing SPRAVATO® at Renew Ketamine Infusion: Setting a New Standard in Depression Care
By Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD
If traditional antidepressants haven’t worked for you, there’s hope. Renew Ketamine Infusion is thrilled to offer SPRAVATO® (esketamine), an innovative nasal spray FDA-approved in 2019 specifically for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Even better, SPRAVATO® is often covered by insurance for those who meet the eligibility criteria.
With our years of expertise in ketamine-based therapies, we at Renew Ketamine Infusion are uniquely qualified to deliver SPRAVATO® with unmatched care, compassion, and professionalism.
Depression can be profoundly debilitating, and for many, conventional treatments fall short. SPRAVATO® offers a breakthrough, working differently than typical antidepressants by targeting the NMDA receptor in the brain, leading to rapid-acting effects— often within hours or days. As an FDAapproved treatment, SPRAVATO® is covered by many insurance plans, making it more accessible to those who qualify.
This medication must be administered in a REMS-certified clinic under medical supervision, ensuring safety and support throughout the treatment process. It is not a medication that can be taken at home.
What Makes Renew Ketamine Infusion Different?
At Renew Ketamine Infusion, we are not just administering SPRAVATO®— we’re redefining how it’s delivered. Our approach is built around the patient experience, ensuring safety, com-
fort, and individualized attention at every step. Here’s what sets us apart:
1. One-on-One Constant In-Person Supervision
You will never be left alone during your SPRAVATO® treatment. A highly trained clinician and a female nurse will be with you at all times to ensure your safety, answer questions, and provide reassurance. Your care is our top priority.
2. Exclusive, Private Experience
We treat one patient at a time. Unlike other clinics where patients may share spaces or wait in group areas, you will have your own private room to relax, reflect, and simply be yourself.
3. Psychotherapy Services Offered and Customized Workbooks
To maximize the benefits of SPRAVATO®, we integrate it with tailored psychotherapy sessions led by licensed and trained psychotherapists. Each patient receives a personalized treatment workbook to guide their journey and provide tools for lasting change.
4. Access to Providers Beyond the Session
We believe care doesn’t stop when the session ends. Our patients have direct access to providers after their visits to ask questions, share concerns, or simply seek guidance.
5. A Patient-First Approach
At Renew Ketamine Infusion, every detail of our care model is designed with the patient in mind. We cut no corners and leave nothing to chance. From the moment you step
Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician
through our doors, your comfort, safety, and progress are our sole focus.
Years of Experience You Can Trust
As pioneers in ketamine therapy, we have spent years refining our methods and staying at the forefront of research. This deep experience allows us to offer SPRAVATO® with confidence, ensuring that every patient receives the highest standard of care. We understand the complexities of treatment-resistant depression and are committed to providing a supportive environment where patients can find relief.
Why Settle for Less?
If insurance will cover your treatment, why not choose the best? At Renew Ketamine Infusion, we combine clinical excellence with a compassionate, patient-first philosophy. You deserve a team that understands your unique needs and works tirelessly to help you achieve the relief you’ve been seeking.
Start Your Journey Today
If you’ve struggled with depression that hasn’t responded to other treatments, SPRAVATO® may be the solution you’ve been waiting for. Contact us today to schedule a free consultation and take the first step toward a brighter future.

ALTAN
The spirit and sound of Altan comes from the deep and rich musical tradition of their native Co. Donegal, Ireland. On one of his many visits to the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair, Belfast born flute player Frankie Kennedy met fiddler and singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, sparking off a deep musical connection, marriage in 1981, and a journey that took them all over the world. Their vision was to bring the unique repertoire of Donegal music to the world and that mission is still as strong as ever.

Scripted Bar & Kitchen
Premium Luxury Bar and Casual Restaurant
Date nights and family outings often include two of my favorite past times – dining out and going to the movies. With the opening of Scripted Bar & Kitchen (located inside the MetroLux Theatres in the Outlets at San Clemente), combining both for a memorable evening out with my husband or a family fun day with the kids just became infinitely easier.
For the former, the full-service bar features a nearly 30-foot show stopping (pun intended) natural stone quartzite bar serving top liquor brands for a variety of classic and custom cocktails, craft draft and bottled beer, fine wine and non-alcoholic beverage options. Another defining feature – six overhead television screens perfect for catching favorite sporting events.
I lean toward appetizers as entrees so the perfect “date night” involves a glass of fine wine and an array of delicious dishes to share. Our faves at Scripted? The fried calamari with marinara, Thai chicken tenders (options also include BBQ, plain or Buffalo), Bretzel bites with beer cheese sauce or honey mustard and edamame. Other popular picks include the pro-
sciutto arugula plate, crab rangoons (think crab and cream cheese accompanied by a sweet chili dipping sauce) and hulk nachos (homemade tortilla chips, chicken, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and cheese sauce).
The great thing about Scripted Bar & Kitchen is that it’s open to the public – whether or not you’re going to a movie. So it’s destined to be an option for a quick bite to refuel when my daughter and I hit the Outlets for a mom + me shopping excursion.
Meals out with the kids? There are plenty of pasta and pizza offerings including the Penne Emiliano (julienne of zucchini, prosciutto and creamy Parmesan) and a spicy sausage flatbread topped with mozzarella, Andouille sausage, pepperoni and chili flakes.
“Handhelds” served with fries, rice, truffle fries or side house green salad range from a crispy shrimp burger and Malibu organic veggie burger to a herb chicken bacon avocado sandwich on ciabatta and the signature Metro burger with gouda cheese, bacon onion jam, arugula, tomato and garlic aioli.
You’ll have your work cut out for you in choosing between the sweet treats for dessert. The Metro sundae puts an inventive spin on the traditional favorite topping vanilla ice cream with brownie bites, chocolate and caramel drizzled popcorn and whipped cream – yum!

Lake Tahoe’s South Shore Escape
The Ultimate Year-Round Family Escape
From a winter wonderland to sun-soaked summers, discover endless adventures for every age
BY JODY ROBINSON
If you ask my family where they’d like to vacation each winter, the “list” of destinations is unsurprisingly short: Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. Ask the same question in the spring, and the breathtaking alpine retreat tops the list again. South Lake Tahoe literally offers something for everyone. Skiing, boating, golfing, shopping, gaming, nightlife, hiking, biking. Dining out or cooking dinner
with the family, staying slopeside or near the waterfront: there are endless combinations of fun to be had. Taking a break but staying close to the amenities that make you comfortable at home can be a tough lift, but on the shores of the lake waterfront homes often come with a dock for easy access to get you to whichever activity you’d like.
Split by the massive, magnificent alpine lake in the middle, both the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe are easy to navigate and offer an abundance of outdoor (and indoor) attractions and activities year-round.
Our family is rather partial to the south shore - many of our best vacation memories were made here over the years. It doesn’t matter which season you visit: whether a winter wonderland or a water enthusiast’s dream during the summer. When snow caps the Sierra Nevadas, there’s snowshoeing, cross-country and downhill skiing and snowboarding, while warmer weather is perfect for hiking, biking, kayaking or simply soaking in the picturesque environs from the shoreline. Pristine waters, deep gorges, craggy mountains and tall green trees define the spectacularly scenic landscape.
For a more comfortable, cozy and convenient option to staying in a traditional hotel room, The Tahoe Keys Resort (LakeTahoe. com or 800.698.2463) offers an extensive selection of luxury homes, condos and rustic cabins to suit your specific needs – whether you’re a couple looking for a romantic retreat, a family with kids or a large group of friends.

Pets of the Month
Meet Mae Mae, a very good girl who is ready and waiting for a family to call her own. What some would perhaps call a mature lady of ten, we call a sweetheart with so much love to give. Mae Mae is personally of the mindset that age is just a number- and not one that will keep her down! She likes to balance an active life with lots of relaxation. The perfect day starts by going on a scenic walk and ends cuddled up on the couch for movie night. Mae Mae would make a great addition to the family, but would prefer to be the only pet in a home so she doesn’t have to share the spotlight.
Say hello to Pidgey, a ten month old kitty now available for adoption. Though practically a kitten herself, Pidgey came to us as a momma of four. Now that they’re all grown and adopted, Pidgey is ready for a happy ending of her own. She has a quiet personality and can be a little shy until she gets to know you, but opens up to be a sweet and curious girl when she’s comfortable. She would thrive in a calm home where she can finally settle in.
ADOPT ME
Hi there! My name is Arlo and I am looking for my new best friend. As a young dog only one year old, I like to stay active and love long walks or romps in the yard. After playtime is done, I enjoy relaxing on the couch by your side. I get along with family members of all ages and wouldn’t even mind a dog friend of similar temperament. Can I come home with you?

Cefali & Cefali, APC
Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries
By Jody Robinson
It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.
Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.
Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.
“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.
Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start
Michael and Courtney Cefali
to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”
Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”
With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.
“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”
Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?
Don’t let the good life pass you by.
If you’ve ever marveled at the sun as it sinks from the sky, you’ll feel right at home at The Seville. With a California vibe and coastal view, it’s the perfect setting for the good life. Make every day and every moment, count.
By Jody Robinson
When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.
What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong
places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)
Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.
After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever
Audio / Video
leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.
And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply
look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?
Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.
If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Owners Skip Myers and Jon Colburn and their team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.
“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space.
We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”
The technicians and designers who work with clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.
There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.
“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Jon. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”
Skip and Jon are also advocates for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.
“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” says Jon. “There’s the televi-
sion, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Life. Organized.
By Jody Robinson
Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.
Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”
I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply
a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.
Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and
San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.
“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”
Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.
“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”
Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy
Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”
“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”
In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

Your Project, Your Way
Transforming Your Space with the Stars of Flooring: Floor Coverings International
By Jody Robinson
Over the years since we moved into our (new to us) home, my husband, Tim, and I have embarked on several major home improvement projects. Exterior paint was on the menu, as well as hardwood floors for the living and dining room. I’d like to think we’ve done an admirable job of defining our family’s “style,” laying out options and evaluating flooring samples.
It’s now over a decade later and we’re again contemplating moves to freshen up the dated design in a few spaces. Although Tim is a seasoned pro at coordinating projects, I’m admittedly more than a little intimidated by the process. Which is why I’m happy to have discovered the locally and veteran-owned Floor Coverings International. Justin Schuhardt, who owns the franchise location serving South Orange County, shares the “convenience philosophy” that uncomplicates the endeavor of home-makeovers since the parent company’s inception in 1988.
Justin, who has been helping his OC customers take the stress out of renovating since 2016, is an army veteran and 25-year supply chain professional. I’m certain flooring was an easier issue to navigate than some of the big-
gest logistical challenges of our time, and Justin was equally methodical in choosing which business to represent in following his passion for making homes beautiful.
“I didn’t want it to just be a contractor’s license and check on the table,” he says. “In Flooring Coverings International, I found the perfect match for my future customer’s investment in time, energy, and money.”
And the process couldn’t be easier. Justin and his team of highly trained flooring professionals come to you with a mobile flooring showroom featuring 3000+ design samples. You’ll work with the same team from start to finish to create your ideal space by balancing your vision with budgetary needs and advising on different aspects of each flooring option and the specific installation requirements.
Discover inspiration, style and the perfect products for your project. Choose traditional, mid-century modern, transitional, eclectic. Select carpet, luxury vinyl plank, hardwood or laminate. Then the company’s profes sional flooring contractors work within your busy life to schedule a convenient
time for you. Every aspect of your life will be considered! They’ll move any furniture you need them to, remove and haul away your old flooring, thoroughly prepare the subfloor for your new floors, install your new floor coverings and add new trim if necessary and finally, clean up and remove any excess product.
“We pride ourselves on delivering the professionalism and trust you can count on,” says Justin. “We arrive on time and provide clear project timelines. You’ll receive a down-to-thepenny quote and guarantee that we will not be happy (with the project) until you are.”

South Coast Shutter and Shades
Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”
Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.
“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."
Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.
Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”
A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her
my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"
Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."
SOUTH COAST SHUTTER AND SHADES
Ask a SOMM
By Jody Robinson
A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served.
Q Does white really go with fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?
A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.
Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?
A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and
therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!
Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?
A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

More Prescription Drug Savings Coming in 2026 Mission Viejo Wigs
By Stephanie Frisch
There are a few other changes to prescription drug plans on the horizon. In 2024, Medicare negotiated for the first time the prices of 10 of the most commonly used and expensive prescription drugs. The lower prices take effect in 2026 and are expected to save people enrolled in Medicare an estimated $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket costs in 2026 alone. The first 10 drugs with negotiated prices include:
In 2025, Medicare will select an additional 15 drugs covered under Part D to negotiate prices that will become available in 2027, and more medications will be negotiated each year beyond that.
Other changes on the horizon in 2025 and beyond;
Midyear Statements for Medicare Advantage Plan Members.
This will matter to Medicare beneficiaries who have chosen Advantage plans instead of original Medicare, 50.5 percent as of July 2024. The midyear statement will show available benefits that you haven’t used — important since those extras are often what persuades a Medicare enrollee to sign up with a particular plan.
For example, if they haven’t used any of their dental, vision, hearing or fitness benefits, plans are required to notify them if they have any benefits left.
I can’t even imagine how difficult it was for the insurance companies to develop the software that tracks this for each Medicare Advantage plan enrollee. ALL Medicare Advantage insurance providers MUST comply.
