Systematic Withdrawals In Retirement

Many of us grew up with the concept that making regular, periodic contributions to our retirement account was a sound investment strategy.

T

he idea was that, in a fluctuating market, regularly investing a set amount would enable an individual to buy more shares when prices were low and fewer shares when prices were high.¹ Does this mean that taking regular, periodic withdrawals during retirement makes similar good sense?

Actually, it can be quite problematic.

Systematic withdrawals do the precise opposite of systematic investments by selling fewer shares when the price is high and more shares when the price is low.

This, in effect, reduces the number of shares that may be able to participate in any subsequent market recovery.

Here’s an example.

In the accumulation phase, if a portfolio falls by 25%, it will require approximately a 33% return to get back to its pre-decline value.² In the distribution phase, if you withdraw 5% of your portfolio for income and suffer the same 10% market decline, you would need to see an 18% market rebound to get back to pre-decline value.²

SEQUENCE OF RETURNS

In the accumulation phase, investors tend to focus on average annual rates of return, less on the sequence of the returns. If you’re a buy-and-hold investor, ignoring short-term fluctuations may be a sound long-term approach.

If you are in retirement, however, you absolutely care about the sequence of the annual returns.

For instance, comparable portfolios might deliver the same average annual return over a 20- or 30-year period, but they could have radically different outcomes in terms of account balance

and income production. Generally speaking, negative returns in the early years of your retirement can potentially reduce how long your assets can be expected to last.

Mencken once remarked that, “For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.”³ Anticipating a lifetime of withdrawals from a defined asset pool over an indefinite period of time is a complex challenge for which there is no simple solution. Pursuing this challenge can require creative approaches and persistent vigilance.

One of the Global Center’s largest fundraising events of the year is the annual Priceless luncheon. This year’s event will be held Saturday, September 17 at 11:30 a.m. at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach, where 300-400 are expected to be in attendance. The luncheon raises awareness around the issue of human trafficking, and supports the Global Center’s programs in education, prevention, training, and advocacy.

This year’s keynote speaker for the Priceless luncheon will be Ernie Allen, founding chairman, former president and CEO for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

During his tenure, more than 180,000 missing children were recovered and the recovery rate increased from 62% in 1990 to 97% in 2012. Allen created the national 24-hour missing children hotline; brought age progression, facial reconstruction and other forensic resources to law enforcement; and provided training for more than 300,000 police officers.

n the midst of a contentious election year, the concept of sustainable peace may seem like nothing more than campaign rhetoric. But the team at the Global Center for Women and Justice at Vanguard University is reaching across the world and even governments—even across faiths—to create a partnership of peace and hope.

From this private Christian university’s collaborative work with Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad starting this July, to the partnership integrating women’s studies at the University of Duhok in Iraq, the Global Center for Women and Justice is breaking down barriers by building up relationships. Locally, the Global Center holds annual workshops, conferences and fundraisers in Orange County to gather local leaders, students, teachers and child welfare professionals to develop skills in identifying and preventing human trafficking.

This is just one piece of the complex puzzle that Dr. Sandra Morgan, director of Vanguard University’s Global Center for Women and Justice, has been working on in her advocacy for advancing the global status of women. In 2010, Dr. Morgan became the director of Vanguard’s Global Center for Women and Justice, and her international partnerships with governments and universities have facilitated women’s equality around the globe. These partnerships have given resources to law enforcement and community leaders here in the U.S. “Justice is priceless, and in justice, there must be resolve. That is our job,” said Dr. Morgan.

“We need to educate every teacher, school-based professional, probation officer, healthcare provider, and child welfare worker because this happening in our own community.”

For now 14 years, Vanguard University’s Global Center for Women and Justice has provided training and resources to enable leaders in promoting justice for victims of human trafficking and modern day slavery. With over 21 million people living in slavery today, the Global Center works diligently in their efforts to end human trafficking and the cyber-exploitation of women and children in Orange County and worldwide.

During the luncheon each year, three distinguished recipients of the Diamond Award are honored for their efforts in pursuing justice for women and children in the Orange County community. The 2015 Diamond Award winners included Orange County Transportation Authority’s Human Trafficking Campaign “Be The One,” as well as Kyla Smith, director of The Dream Center’s Project Home for Victims of Human Trafficking.

Human trafficking survivors from New Delhi, India, Pabitra Sunar, Chandrakala Badi, and Devisara Badi were also honored with the Director’s Youth Award for their work in advocacy for marginalized women in India. Through sponsorship and donations at last year’s luncheon, over $200,000 was raised for local and global advocacy and education programs.

isitors to my Tea Salon frequently ask me why I chose a French theme for my restaurant, my answer is always the same. I love all things French, especially the beautiful city of Paris. Due to an inner-ear problem, I have never been to the city of love, so I decided to bring it stateside. Old Towne Orange was the perfect choice. My husband and I own the building and this community is a great place to do business. I have been a business owner in this charming district for over 20 years, I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

When you first enter, you’ll discover a little French souvenir shop filled with much of the same merchandise you find when you visit Paris, France. Looking Before You Leap: Steps to Take Before the Wedding Dance

any people my wife’s and my age have shared the experience we enjoyed recently on a Saturday evening: a handsome young man, well established in his business field, greeted his successful, beautifully attired bride at the altar as they calmly repeated their wedding vows without the fear and trembling that my generation almost universally experienced under the same circumstances. The difference?

The couple’s seven additional years of age – and their accompanying financial stability—were enough to supply both the bride and groom with the steadiness so lacking in so many of the weddings of earlier generations.

Eleanor Barkhorn wrote in an article for The Atlantic that the average age for Americans getting married increased by seven years from 1960 to 2013.1 Ms. Barkhorn quoted an academic survey saying that college-educated women have largely benefitted from marrying later. Specifically, she explained that the average income for women who attended college and married after the age of thirty earn fifty-six percent more than women with college degrees who married before age twenty.

While brides and grooms may marry more comfortably when tenure is tolled and assets accounted, success brings its own perils to the pulpit.

“Divorce attorneys have a special name for financially comfortable couples who marry without any planning ahead of their vows,” explains Kevin Gibbs, an Anaheim attorney who is Board-Certified as a Family Law Specialist in California.

“We call them ‘Inventory.’ You might consider them more confident at their weddings, but family law attorneys know that their confidence is often a stone castle built on a foundation of sand.”

What kind of planning does Gibbs recommend for the well-shod marrieds-to-be?

“There are two answers to this question,” explains Mr. Gibbs. “If the couple has concerns about both their assets and their income in the event of a divorce, then they need to talk about a Premarital Agreement, or a PMA. These allow for an agreement that will address both who owns what and who pays whom if there is a disparity between their incomes.”

“However,” Kevin goes on, “A trust can allocate and specify who owns which assets just as well as a PMA, so if there isn’t any concern about income disparity, a trust will usually suffice.” Gibbs smiles before he adds, “And the father-in-law doesn’t get testy about why a groom is generating a document to cheat his little princess. Instead, his new son-in-law becomes a prince who is doing right by the Apple of Daddy’s eye by setting up a trust to protect her.”

Given a choice between a document which smacks of heavy self-interest (like a Premarital Agreement) or a document which carries the image of a new in-law who worries about his or her duties to the clan (such as a Trust), many advisors recommend foregoing the PMA in favor of a trust for the protection of the assets of both the bride and the groom.

“I’ve never had a couple argue about setting up a trust to protect their assets. They simply sign-off on a document that has three accounts listed for yours, mine and ours,” notes Attorney Gibbs. “On the other hand, there’s always a little extra tension energy in the air on signing day for a PMA. Some people need the PMA, but most well-heeled clients can get by with just a well-written trust.”

Well-heeled or barefoot—couples who come to their wedding with their assets already properly managed will be much more likely to live happily ever after than those who leap before they have looked.

Incontinence Under-reported in Younger Women

Many people don’t know that bladder control problems are one of the most common health problems that women face every day. A mistaken belief is that urinary incontinence is more prevalent in middle-aged to older women, especially those who’ve had a baby.

Many believe the bladder problems are a part of getting older.

H

owever, according to a 2016 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found that women who have never been pregnant suffer from bladder control problems and that incontinence is often underreported. A study from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia studied women between the ages of 16 and 30 who had never been pregnant. The researchers found that women who had been sexually active and who were not currently using oral contraceptives had the highest rate of urinary incontinence.

There are many reasons younger women may be affected by bladder control symptoms. These include previous episodes of trauma, recurrent bladder infections, back injuries, side effects from medications and poor pelvic muscle tone. Symptoms can get so bad that some women don’t want to leave their homes because of a fear of embarrassing leakage. The young women in the study reported an increased sense of shame from bladder leakage.

The lymphatic system delivers nutrients to body tissues and removes waste products. It operates similarly to the circulatory system but is a separate system.

Lymphedema can be complicated to treat, which is why you should see your medical professional for appropriate options as there are many variables, techniques and specialized treatments for lymphedema.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

W

hile the circulatory system relies on the heart to pump blood around the body, the lymphatic system relies on routine movement of the muscles and joints to push lymph fluid through the body. If a section of the lymphatic system is blocked or damaged, normal drainage may be slowed or stopped, resulting in swelling or lymphedema.

The most common procedure for managing lymphedema is called Complex or Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

What Else Can You Do About Your Lymphedema?

The following recommendations apply only to the area of your body affected by lymphedema.

• Keep the affected area very clean • Avoid injuries to the skin that can lead to infection, such as scratches or bites from pets or bites or stings from insects.

• Avoid other activities that can cause more extensive trauma to the delicate lymphatic vessels, such as excessive strain during exercise, restriction of blood and lymph circulation by blood pressure cuffs, tight bra straps, waist bands, etc.

• Avoid temperature extremes that can stress the lymphatic system

CDT has two phases: phase l, reduction and phase ll, maintenance, each consisting of four elements. All the elements have specific contributions and can only be effective if applied together. The four elements of CDT are:

This swelling occurs most often in the arms and legs, but it can also affect the face, neck, abdomen, or genitals. It is estimated that 5 million Americans suffer from lymphedema – resulting from cancer treatment

• Skin Care • Manual lymph drainage (MLD) • Compression therapy • Exercise therapy Short stretch bandaging is used in the reduction phase.

So when Dr. Hsu learned that Vernon was a Lakers fan, he volunteered a pair of tickets that allowed Vernon and his wife their first visit to the Staples Center to watch their team play last December as part of Hospice Care of the West’s new “True Loves and Wishes” program created to grant the wishes of its patients.

"We had such a wonderful time," says Donna. "I had never been to a professional game and it had been many years since Vernon had been to one, so we can't thank Dr. Hsu enough for such a memorable afternoon. It certainly added to the excitement that the Lakers won that day! But more than that, everyone at Hospice Care of the West is so nice and so caring, they have really been an incredible help to us on every level."

Spotlight On: Mr. Vernon Clover

A native Oklahoman, Vernon met his future bride on a blind date and they will celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary in October. An "Army brat," Donna was born in Pennsylvania and raised all over the country in states where her father was stationed, including Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Donna's son David Schaffer lives two blocks away from the couple and her daughter, Chris, lives in Texas, while Vernon's daughter Stacey lives in Tulsa. Vernon and Donna are the proud grandparents of three "lovely granddaughters" - Alexis, 21, Caroline, 16 and Isabella, 13.

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.

When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

WHAT YOU NEED: • 8 paint sticks (we got ours at Home Depot) • Wooden monogram letter (we got ours at Michael’s) • Wooden scroll (we got ours at Michael’s) • Red, white and blue craft paint • Foam brush • Small bristle paint brush • Matte Finish Spray Paint (we used Krylon) • Sandpaper • Masking or Painters tape • Hot glue gun and glue • Twine *Primer spray or paint, only needed if both sides of the paint sticks have writing on them Independence Day is just around the corner and what better way to show off your patriotic creativity than by making a DIY monogram paint stick flag! Start the summer celebration off right with this must-have red, white and blue home décor piece!

Monogram Paint Stick Flag Steps: 1. If both sides of your paint sticks have writing on them, you may need to put primer on them before painting. This prevents the writing from showing through the craft paint.

2. Using foam brush, paint the blank side of 4 paint sticks white paint and the other 4 paint sticks red. It is not necessary to paint the back of the stick, unless desired, but be sure to get the sides.

3. Using the small bristle paint brush, carefully paint the monogram letter and scroll with the white paint.

4. Set paint sticks, monogram letter and scroll aside to completely dry.

5. Once completely dry, place 2 white and 2 red paint sticks together in an alternating pattern and mark off an area with masking/painters tape about 5 inches from left edge.

6. Use the foam brush to paint surface of the sticks blue. You may need a couple of coats to cover the color underneath.

7. Once dry, peel off masking tape and paint the side edges of blue section.

8. To add a rustic feel, use sandpaper to lightly sand the edges of sticks, monogram letter and scroll.

9. Flip over and organize the paint sticks so that your flag is face down on a flat surface, spacing about 1/8 - 1/4 inch apart.

10. Using the masking tape, tape the ends of the paint sticks to the flat surface so that they do not move while you work.

11. Using hot glue gun and a piece of twine about 30 inches long, put a dab of glue about 1 ½ inches from the left end of the bottom flag stick and press end of twine into glue to secure.

12. Repeat step 11 on each stick, moving from bottom of flag to top of flag. Do not cut off extra twine.

13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 for the right side of the paint sticks.

14. Remove tape and flip over to front side. Tie the ends of the twine into a bow as a way to hang your flag, and trim ends according to preferred length.

15. Determine placement of your monogram letter and scroll in the blue section and apply a small amount of glue on back of monogram letter and scroll (be sure to place the glue where it will touch the sticks) and secure.

16. Thursday, April 14th marked the 42nd year that members of the three Rotary Clubs in Orange formally recognized outstanding men and women members of the Orange Police and Fire Departments for their dedication and service to the community. Orange Rotary Clubs began participating in the traditional event to promote greater appreciation for those who keep our community safe.

Orange Rotary Co-Chairs Matt Drenner and Jay Carr along with Orange Rotary President Dr. Murad Gharibian, thanked all members of the program participants, including Rotary District Governor Ken Padilla, Orange Rotary members Gary Remland, William G. PREPARING FOR TAKEOFF Colonel Gregory G. Raths Reports for Congressional Duty

McDonnell’s “masterpiece fighting jet,” the F-4 Phantom, rolled off the production line in December 1960, as a fleet defender built to intercept nuclear foes. Delivered to Miramar Naval Air Station, the jet was eventually bound for nearly four decades of service in the U.S. military.

or a rookie pilot, the F-4 could be a little hard to handle, its two-seater capacity requiring a little more of a team effort than fighter pilots were used to; and a nose that rose notoriously slowly off the deck of an aircraft carrier. For those of us who know nothing about planes, let alone what Mach 1 or 2 mean, a slow-going-nose doesn’t sound like much. But for Colonel Gregory G. Raths, USMC (RET) it was as much of a trial as any: with a bit of speed, that slow nose could over rotate to a stall. A rather rude initiation to the Marine Corps, if you ask me.

Luckily, meeting Col. Raths is nothing like stalling out over the deck of a 45,000 ton aircraft carrier, even though his sights are currently set on becoming a U.S. Congressman this year perhaps a task equal to lifting off the deck in a multi-million dollar war machine.

budgets. My first assignment was in Orange County, CA - at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.”

Closed now, El Toro was long part of the vision of a developing community - a vision that Col. Raths would like to see brought back to American towns. Dwight Whiting, Boston-born founder of the town of El Toro, helped establish the first church, negotiated the arrival of the Santa Fe railroad through the valley, and saw the future of the community in its gentleman farmers: working hard and living off the wealth and proceeds of their walnut and apricot groves. Replaced now by shopping malls and a new town moniker, the vision Whiting and Col. Raths share for the country is fading, and Col. Raths believes it is time for a change.

and three sisters he grew up with in Phoenix, Arizona. The fifth of eight children, Col. Raths had an early view into the life of a serviceman. His father served in the Army Air Corps from 1941-1945, as a bomber pilot during WWII, and flew combat in the European theatre in the A-20, a night fighter and adaptable light bomber mostly used by the Allied forces in World War II. His mother stayed home full time with the family, keeping the household running.

“The American people have had enough,” he says. “We have been deceived, betrayed by our elected officials.

“As a kid, I mowed lawns, delivered handbills, went door to door selling anything from light bulbs to Christmas lights,” he says. Each step around the neighborhood was a step towards a life of service: to his community first as an Eagle Scout, class president, and multi-sport athlete, and eventually to his country - joining the Marine Corps Officer Candidate Program in 1972 after his freshman year at Arizona State University (ASU).

Enduring summer training at Quantico during the summers of 1973 and 1974, Col. Raths also received his Bachelor's Degree in Business in 1975. By the time he graduated flight school in Pensacola, FL, “Vietnam was over, and the military began drawing down its forces, and reducing its

leaders who are not worried about the next election or pleasing special interests groups. We can't count on the same politicians who got us into this mess to get us out.

There is only one special interest group I am interested in serving: the people of the 45th Congressional District."

Col. Raths brings a unique experience and perspective to negotiating Washington’s political scene. Serving as Chief of Staff of the White House Military Office during Clinton’s administration taught Raths much about how career politicians function, and he’d like to be a force that changes those functions.

We need new leaders with honesty and integrity” - two traits Col. Raths learned en force through his tours aboard the USS Midway, and later as squadron commander off the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. “Washington D.C. has proven its ineptitude, and we must not allow this dreadful sequence to continue.”

At Mach speeds, most modern aircraft must compromise in order to maintain handling ability. Supersonic speeds create shock waves, and the stronger the shock wave is, the greater the pressure difference, which causes a sonic boom. While those outside the cockpit are witness to the boom, those inside the aircraft cannot hear it. America is at the edge of Mach speed right now, cruising into the path of governmental dependence and the “damaging impact of complacency and apathy.” Col. Raths would like to take back the controls.

His new assignment is a personal one: One he believes must be based on solutions, not politics as usual. Courage, rather than the opinion of a special interest group, or the hope of reelection.

Col. Raths has no aspirations to become a career politician - he’s already completed a 30 year military career and spent the past twelve years in the private sector as a commercial airline pilot, president of an automobile parts distribution firm, and is currently an author and publisher.

He volunteers within his community of Mission Viejo as a member of the Elks Lodge, the Rotary Club, American Legion, VFW, St. Kilian Knights of Columbus and serves as President of the Board of Directors for the charity Patriots and Paws, a nonprofit organization that provides companion dogs, furniture and home goods to veterans and active duty members at no cost.

Overseeing military support from the White House is no small task, especially after serving in the military at such a volatile and unpopular time, and Raths is all too familiar with the stresses and victories surrounding military legislation coming from Congress. He would like to make it clear that his next battle is back in Washington, fighting for the people of the 45th Congressional District where he’d like to “fix the mess that has been created by politicians invested in maintaining their power, rather than doing what they know is right based on the principles that made this nation great to begin with.”

He is running for office because he simply believes that “a drastically new course for this nation must be drafted" and is committed to leading that charge on behalf of his friends, neighbors and fellow citizens in California's 45th Congressional District.

For our future and that of our children and grandchildren: the time to survey the scene has passed. Start those engines, ladies and gentlemen.

s summer approaches and the final weeks of school wind down before the crazy chaos that defines “family vacation” days descend upon our household, my husband and I decided to coordinate a romantic weekend to celebrate (both of our birthdays are in the same month). We were looking for a locale no longer than about an hour away by plane, with plenty of outdoor activities and indoor recreation, a temperate climate and fine wine and dining. And ideally an all-inclusive experience so that once we checked in, we wouldn’t want (or need) to leave until it was time to head home.

From dramatic lanterns greeting guests on the front drive and glass of local wine offered upon check-in to indoor fireplaces throughout the property and wine tasting in Cork Wine Bar (the resort’s custom-built wine room), fire and wine define the “theme” of the guest experience here. Curl up with a good book at the communal firepits against a backdrop of breathtaking views and relax to the sound of waves crashing on the beach below. Cork Wine Bar: Stop by the resort’s signature wine room for flights of wines, cheese and chocolate, as well as wines by the glass or bottle. Sommeliers specialize in introducing guests to interesting new wines and in providing education on every aspect of the wines.

hough we believe that everyone should weight train, we recognize that weightlifting is especially important for women—and it’s women who are less likely to make a habit of this form of exercise. Whether it’s due to the tired myth that women can bulk up from weightlifting, or because they feel less comfortable in the weight room, it is costly to their wellbeing.

Because women have less muscle than men do to begin with, there is greater need to lift weights to prevent the natural loss that occurs during the aging process. So if you’ve been avoiding lifting weights because you think you’ll get mannish or bulky, that’s the last thing you should worry about! It is proven that women do not have the same levels of anabolic hormones that men have, and that’s the key component in building muscle.
