BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE
By Jody Robinson
Beginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach.
A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections.
“The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur-
suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff.
Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.”
If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

History-Making Women Your Daughter Should Know About
As a mother, the greatest gift you can give your daughter is the support in letting her know that she can do and be whatever she wants in her life. We should embrace the accomplishments of women that have come before us and exist today, and use them as a platform for inspiration for the future. These are but 14 of those women that believed their dream and gave us the opportunities that we have now.
Cleopatra (30 BC)
The last ruling pharaoh of Egypt, when women were not accepted as leaders. Beyond her beauty, Cleopatra was educated to be pharaoh and was adept at the art of negotiation. She overcame all obstacles in her devotion to maintaining the country of Egypt. Her well-known liaisons with both Mark Anthony and Julius Cesar of Rome, Cleopatra made use of her intellect, charm, sensual prowess and diplomatic abilities to keep the Romans from invading Egypt. She remains an icon symbol of today as one of the first women to be a ruler of a nation.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1850-1902)
Born in a time when women could not own property and were actually considered the property of their husbands or fathers, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was both an abolitionist and was passionate about women’s suffrage. She established a movement of such strength and determination for the rights of women that the call was taken up in many European countries as well. As a mentor to Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s influence helped to create some of the laws that we have today.
Anne Frank (1929-1945)
Hidden in a home to avoid the German forces, Anne kept a diary of what it was like to go through the experience. The young Jewish girl painted a picture of life during those days of the Holocaust. The gripping tale, expressed in a diary became one of the most widely read books around the world. Her death in a concentration camp made the horrors more real and is used in the hopes that nothing like that will ever be repeated in history.
Indira Gandhi (1917-1984)
Indira Gandhi was well educated in the art of politics and became not only the third Prime Minister of India but the only woman to have that office. During a time of political crisis, her presence was a major deciding factor in the war with Pakistan. Known for her strength, Gandhi was responsible for some of the changes to the constitution of India which are in place today. India has historically maintained a ‘caste’ system, where women were not given many human rights. Indira Gandhi broke through the barriers of her time to help her developing country.

Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
Known as the ‘first lady of civil rights’, Rosa Parks played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement when she refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama. Her action catapulted the movement into the headlines around the world as it exposed the treatment of Black Americans as second class citizens with few legal rights. The refusal led to her arrest and then later to the continuation of the non-violent protests that eventually led to the changes in the laws of the nation towards equality.
Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)
The early 1930’s was a time when air flight was just beginning to come into its own. America looked to the male pilots as their modern day heroes. When a woman’s ‘place’ was solely considered in the home, Amelia Earhart entered the scene as a daring pilot that broke the barriers for the typical image for women. She took on many of the record breaking flights with photos taken in her trousers and jacket. Amelia became a symbol to the world of not only one of the best pilots, but for the independent attitudes of women.
Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000)
The beautiful Austrian born movie star played opposite of some of the top leading men of Hollywood of the day. However, Hedy Lamarr was not just a pretty face, she was also incredibly brilliant. In an effort to create technology that would be of assistance for America during World War II, Lamarr was coinventory of a spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology that could actually control torpedoes. When she notified the American government they did not take her invention seriously, after all, she was a movie star. It wasn’t until later that her inventions were reexamined and it is now being used in many of the devices of today including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and CDMA cellular communications.
Dr. Shirley Jackson (1946-Present day)
Dr. Jackson broke through a number of areas in American society as the first Black American female to receive a PhD from MIT and then later with her technology discoveries. During her time at Bell Labs in the 1970’s, she was a theoretical physicist, but telecommunications was still a male-dominated industry. The scientific research that she conducted resulted in the ability to invent many of the technologies that we take for granted today: touch tone telephones, fiber optic cables, portable fax, solar cells and the technology that created call waiting and caller ID.
Dr. Grace Murray Hopper (1906-1992)
Dr. Hopper’s name might not be one that you know, but as a computer scientist and a Naval Rear Admiral, she was one of the first computer programmers in 1944 and was responsible for the invention of the first computer programming ‘compiler’, which led to the advanced programming COBOL language. She is credited for coining the term ‘computer bug’ as well as ‘debug’ based on the fact that when she investigated a reason for a lack of connectivity in one of the systems, she found a dead bug was actually blocking the signal.

Gloria Steinem (1934-Present)
As a political and social activist and journalist, Ms. Steinem launched the feminist movement that changed the way the world viewed and treated women. The 1960’s were still a time when women were restricted in the types of jobs and pay and could not even purchase a home without the co-signature of a male relative. Gloria Steinem brought the inequalities of the American woman to the front of the media and allowed the nation to adopt a change of laws and attitudes towards women.
Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997)
Diana’s marriage into the Royal Family forever changed the way that the world viewed their elite. Known as ‘the people’s princess’, Diana was the first member of royalty to relate to the average individual in ways that had never before been seen. Her world travels, combined with her passion for charities allowed her to lead the campaign that eventually banned the use of land mines. Diana paved the way for the next generations of England’s royalty to have lives that were less cloistered and closer to the people that they govern.

Aung Sang Suu Kyi (1945-Present)
Suu Kyi avidly promoted democracy in her country of Burma. Placed under house arrest, she remained so for fifteen years until finally freed due to an international campaign. The entire time she was under arrest she continued the pursuit of democracy and is currently one of the most notable individuals around the world for courage and strength of beliefs. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1991 where it was quoted that “Suu Kyi’s struggle is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades.”
Maya Angelou (1928-2014)
There are few women, let alone Black American women, that have had such an influence on a country and its people. Maya’s contributions as a poet, author, actress, singer and dancer gave her the opportunity to receive over fifty honorary degrees and her body of written work has been incorporated into many television shows and productions. Participating with Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X in the Civil Rights Movement, Maya brought an element of truth and reality to a campaign that was long coming to the country. She had the honor of reciting her poetry at the inaugurations of both President John F. Kennedy and President Bill Clinton. Maya Angelou had the ability to bring a crisp clear message, sometimes in a call and at other times, a whisper, so that the words were heard by everyone. “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
- Maya Angelou
A young woman who became an international hero when she stood strong in her beliefs for education for women. As a Pakistani activist she stood up to the Taliban, who banned the ability for girls to attend school. She was most known when she was shot by the Taliban and later recuperated to speak to the world about the struggles of women in her country. She has remained defiant against the suppression and has become a spokesperson around the globe. Malala has become the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace prize and continues as a human rights activist.

Turns 20! Summer Fun as Summer Fun LEGOLAND® California
BY JODY ROBINSON
My husband and I made the mistake of telling our kids we were planning an overnight stay and two days of fun at LEGOLAND® in Carlsbad two weeks prior to the planned visit last month. As you can imagine, we were on the countdown for the the next 13 days, peppered with questions about which attraction in the park we would experience first, if we could plan to be at the entrance “right when they open” so as to be among the first in line, whether two days was really enough time to enjoy the main park, the water park AND the aquarium?
The hotel was a dream come true for our kids and their parents - they loved everything about their stay - from collecting clues in a scavenger hunt that results in a code that unlocks a treasure chest in the room (which reveals a Lego set they could work on while mom and dad get the bags unpacked). Our accommodation is divided into an adult section with a king bed and a smaller, separate nook with bunk beds). The rooms are themed according to five popular lines of Lego toys: pirates, adventure, friends, kingdom and NINJAGO guest rooms.
Bricks restaurant features a buffet of foods that will appeal to everyone — soups, salads, easy-access entrees, and a bar at kids’ level so that they can serve themselves.
Breakfast, which is included with the room, has everything you can think of: eggs, an omelet station, pancakes, yogurt parfaits, pastries, fresh fruit and an array of hot and cold beverages.
But the best benefit of staying in the hotel situated at the entrance to the park? Hotel guests enjoy early access - a full hour before the general public. And if you want to take a break to relax or refuel, get your hand stamped and you can come and go as you please (with free return entry into the park without waiting in line).
Summer is stacking up as a sure-fire adventure along the Pacific as LEGOLAND® launches its roster of new adventures to celebrate the resort’s 20th anniversary including a new interactive Birthday Dance Party, LEGO Friends birthday show, exclusive birthday desserts, pop badges and more. The new
shows can be seen daily now through Sept. 1 and are filled with singing, dancing and characters for all families to enjoy. In addition to free birthday admission for kids under 12, the debut of LEGO® Movie 2 Experience and LEGO City 4D-Officer in Pursuit, a new film debuting in Showplace Theater with dazzling 4D real-world effects, the new LEGOLAND Express Train and recreated DUPLO® Playtown debuts, reimagined in a new park location complete with a slide, hide and ride throughout the interactive play area.
All 20th birthday activities are included with the price of admission into LEGOLAND California Resort. For more information, visit www.LEGOLAND.com.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS
By Megan Spurgin
On June 10, 2023, the communities of Tstreet Volleyball Club and Fairmont Schools will come together on the Fairmont San Juan Capistrano campus to celebrate the opening of the new state of the art sand volleyball courts. Tstreet’s humble beginnings started in the sand back in 2005 when owner and two-time Olympic gold medalist Troy Tanner wanted something special for his then 11-year-old daughter Bailey Tanner. “There was a lack of teaching and mentoring youth athletes in
club volleyball that I knew I wanted for her,” Troy Tanner said. “A lot of families in the area had similar goals for their daughters. Word spread, and Tstreet grew rapidly.”
In addition to a successful pro career both indoor and on the FIVB and AVP tours, Tanner had an incredible run with Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings in 2008, coaching the dynamic duo to an unprecedented 76-1 international record, culminating in Olympic Gold in Beijing. Tanner stated back in the early years of Tstreet, “The sand could be a volleyball player’s best friend. Sand volleyball improves agility, strength, and stamina, which translates directly to indoor play. I knew that when I started a club, I’d want to incorporate sand training.”
Now, alongside Fairmont Schools, Tstreet is getting back to those roots.
On June 10th, Troy
Tanner and Misty May Treanor will reunite on the sand court to share their passion and knowledge of the sport and give back to the up-and-coming generation of beach players.
Troy has surrounded himself with talented, hard-working, good people, and together we have created a volleyball club with a reputation for integrity, organization, consistency and of course, great volleyball. To be back in the sand on Fairmont’s campus is the culmination of years of hard work and brings Tstreet back to its passion to grow the sport both indoor and outdoor. We cannot wait to embark on this journey in the sand!
Tstreet’s Summer Sand program begins June 19th – we hope you can join us!

When the kids were elementary school aged, my husband and I embarked on an ambitious endeavor to visit all 50 states as a family by the time our oldest graduated from high school. With 27 under our belt, we were well on our
way ... then the pandemic hit and stalled out all our travel plans for the better part of two years. Our son is now a high school freshman and we are happily back on track - making up for lost time by taking advantage of every long weekend to explore another of our country’s infinitely interesting destinations. This time ... the Lone Star State’s capital city was on the agenda.
There are few places more interesting than Austin. Similar to Nashville, the city is a perfect amalgamation of Southern charm and modern sensibilities. Great music, great food, and the great outdoors make it the Bermuda Triangle of a good time - you’re only too easily lost in the pure satisfaction of it all. Options for swimming, boating, even surfing abound. A standing wave isn’t the city’s biggest boast though: it’s fun for all ages at any time of day or night. Vibrant entertainment and inspired local cuisine all withing easy walking distance in downtown make it a snap to find spots to stroll if you’re short on time or like us, trying to make the most of every moment during a weekend retreat.
The crucial first step was in identifying the ideal “home base”an accommodation comfortable for our family of four to spread out in a
16
locale close to all the action so that we wouldn’t have to spend much, if any, time in the car exploring the environs. We stumbled upon what proved to be the perfect place - and in my opinion quite a revolutionary concept in vacation rentals.
Kasa.com offers travelers short-term rentals inside boutique hotels or multi-family properties in a growing number of metropolitan cities across the country.
Different by design, Kasa.com showcases stylishly designed, professionally managed rentals that are more standardized than what you’d find on Airbnb at better rates than many hotels by leveraging vacant units. The reservation process couldn’t have been easier, the
experience super reliable, expedient and convenient. The standard of service and customer communication was exemplary - overseen by a globally connected leadership team to make it seamless to stay, and even easier to enjoy your time away from home. Whether it’s business travel or a family vacation, Kasa’s team is in place to assure your delight. As much space as you need, an unmatched standard of cleanliness, easy booking interface for online check-in/out and 24/7 contactless access makes the entire process a breeze.
Our “home away from home” was an apartment in the heart of downtown, literally walking distance
to well ... everything we wanted to do in the city. The two-bedroom apartment on the 15th floor offered panoramic city views, super spacious accommodations outfitted with all the basics you’d need (bed linens, towels, bathroom essentials), a full kitchen, open dining/living area, laundry and to the delight of our teens - ultra-fast, free WiFi. We couldn’t have been more pleased and are already looking into Kasa’s offerings for the other states we still need to cross off the list.

Other than strolling around downtown and indulging in a couple of pretty amazing meals (as expected, Texas barbecue and steak dinners were not-to-be missed), we thought it’d be especially fun (and educational) to take an Austin Duck Adventure (austinducks.com) to tour the city with a splash (pun intended).
The original Austin tour, the company offers an amphibious excursion - starting out on land driving through downtown (Historic Sixth Street, the State Capitol Building, Governor’s Mansion) before splashing into beautiful Lake Austin for a from-thewater perspective of this vibrant city. Our guide, Captain Bob, couldn’t have been more animated, knowledgeable and entertaining - it’s no surprise that Austin Duck Adventures is one of the city’s longest running sightseeing experiences.
Next up, we decided to keep the water theme going with a Capital Cruises (capitalcruises.com) duffy boat rental for a self-guided tour of Lady Bird Lake, a placid picturesque river that separates South Austin from the North side of the city. Walkers, joggers move along the lakeside paths while aqua enthusiasts take to the water by canoe, kayak, Swan pedal boat or standup paddleboard (all available via Capital Cruises).
While swimming around on the Internet prior to our trip, I came upon Magic’s Theater
experience - John’s “Closeup Magic Show” (sleight of hand table magic performed for a small audience made for an intimate and engaging outing - one that our son in particular found most memorable. John regaled guests with tales of his time working in Hollywood and shared details of the museum’s myriad memorabilia.

Abiding Savior Lutheran School & Preschool
Building Christ-Centered Leaders
By Jody Robinson
My husband and I remember our kids’ preschool years. Which will forever be known in our home as the grouping of years when we received advice - solicited and otherwise - from everyone we knew about which school has the best standardized test scores, or the greatest teacher of all time, the coolest playground, the worst cafeteria lunches. While all that is seemingly important, we remember being more concerned with selecting a school that would combine curricular learning with foundational development for our kids’ bodies and spirits as well. It’s a particular feat to emerge from university well educated to be sure, but what good is it really to gain the world and lose your soul?
Luckily for parents of school-aged children in South OC, it’s not necessary to spend long hours searching for a program that combines a culture of mission with a developmental approach in teaching (whereby students learn through play, movement and music) and an elementary school experience that follows along
with California State Standards and benchmarks to guide their teaching through mainstream curriculums.
Voted best faith-based school and preschool in Orange County, Abiding Savior Lutheran School takes very seriously the Biblical command to “train up a child in the way they should go, for when they are old they will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22). But what sets its campus apart from every other Preschool - 8th in the county? Parents and students would say it’s because Abiding Savior’s administration and teachers “bring [their] hearts to work.”
“Because of our culture, the comment that we hear most often when people walk onto campus is that they feel so welcome,” says Principal Donna Lucas. “When a student enrolls here they are more than just a student, they are a part of our family. They are important and special because they are a child of God. I believe that our
teaching staff is absolutely the best. They give so much of themselves to the families of Abiding Savior. They know each and every student in a very special way. They take into account their learning styles and if they are going through something that needs their attention.”
Emphasizing a growth mindset built on solid academic instruction and preparation for high school and beyond is key, built on a foundation of learning with the goal of “building Christ-Centered leaders” through an engaging curriculum, empowering social development and enriching service activities. Small class sizes leads to more individualized attention.
“Our preschool and elementary school share the same mission statement: Joyfully and intentionally make and nurture disciples who make disciples,” says Ms. Lucas. “We do that by loving, serving and connecting. We have weekly chapel services, daily religion classes and our Bibilcal Worldview is woven throughout our curriculum.
Service is a cornerstone of Abiding Savior’s mission. Students and staff collect offerings for many nonprofit organizations throughout the region, including NEGU, Disaster Relief Funds and other church outreach programs. Over 300 toys are collected each year for Spark of Love, over 500 boxes are packages for Operation Christmas Child and the school’s annual food drive benefits South County Outreach and Abiding Savior’s own pantry - amazing generosity for a school of just under 300 students.

Bahia Resort Hotel San Diego’s Premier Beachfront Destination for Family-Friendly Fun
By Jody Robinson
When folks picture Southern California, they might bring up a mental image of Disneyland, or perhaps the golden coastline and its accompanying aqua waters. But I can guarantee at some point in their imaginings, they’re thinking about sunny San Diego.
Nearly perfect weather all year round, miles of sandy beaches, lush tropical gardens, and the spectacular Mission Bay which plays host to an incredible number of recreational activities on and off the water.
Tucked away on a private fourteen-acre peninsula on the west shore of Mission Bay, the Bahia Resort Hotel is the ideal home base from which to explore the environs - whether you are looking for a relaxing retreat lounging poolside with frosty libations or a more active adventure defined by biking, kayaking or motorized boating.
Recently renovated rooms and suites are amenity rich and literally steps away from the water’s edge
with views of the marina, white sand beach or the property’s lush private gardens and grounds.
For our part, our family of four opted for one of the newly updated Marina Suites (each with a private patio or balcony) overlooking the beautiful dockside boats on Mission Bay. The resort’s suites offer more space to spread out with a separate bedroom and living area and included a kitchen with stove, oven and compact refrigerator for a convenient, casual opportunity to refuel between activities during the day.
DESTINATION DINING
The Bahia’s new upscale restaurant, Dockside 1953 is certain to make waves (pun intended) on the city’s coastal dining scene with its picturesque waterfront setting, nautical-inspired design and eclectic menu of mouthwatering dishes by new Executive Chef Bryan Stuppy.

Chef’s culinary offerings feature “a strong focus on sustainable seafood from local fishmongers and the highest quality produce from local growers and producers.” Seafood aficionados like me will have their work cut out for them in deciding between the literal bounty of “raw” standouts like locally caught Rockfish ceviche, Ahi Tuna tostada or Chef’s crudo. Can’t choose? The Seafood Tower offers an impressive sampling of oysters on the half shell, shrimp, ceviche and seared tuna.
I’m personally a fan of making a meal of several appetizers and the menu here provided a delicious opportunity to share an array of delicious dishesfrom the melt-in-your-mouth seared Day Boat Scallops and fragrant Bistro Steam Mussels to the pasture fed Wagyu and Lamb Meatball with whipped Valibreso and Calabrian Chili tomato sauce.
The warm, welcoming ambiance takes inspiration from its scenic waters edge locale with a light, airy casual-Californian beachside design (table tops and menu boards that resemble boat decking, brass signage, nautical light fixtures, furnishings done up in seafoam blue and sand). Several paintings of classic motor yachts and notable San Diego icons including the
Star of India, Point Loma Lighthouse and the Giant Dipper rollercoaster adorn the walls. A handcrafted scale model of a vintage speedboat serves as an eye-catching centerpiece of the restaurant. But the restaurant’s spacious outdoor patio with cozy firepits and unobstructed views of the bay are its piece de resistance.
OUTDOOR ENDEAVORS
As we discovered on our family’s previous staycations here at Bahia, there is no shortage of outdoor activity. Much to the delight of our teenage kids, options include tennis, taking a dip in the Junior Olympic swimming pool, stand up paddleboarding, afternoon bike rides, boat rentals for a scenic spin around the bay or lounging in a cabana with a good book on the secluded beach.
als. For those with a need for speed, guests can rent a Hurricane or Rinker powerboat. We spent an exhilarating hour with a spin around the bay aboard a 20’ Hurricane Deckboat - a fast, fun craft that’s also a super comfortable ride for up to 10 passengers. While boaters stay within the bay, our experience alternated between a leisurely cruise in the channels and a wind-through-your hair ride at speeds topping 40 mph.
Experience the best of beach living with direct access to the sand or choose a balcony view of the tidal teal just steps away. Take advantage of onsite gourmet dining, or the plethora of outdoor activity. Newly renovated, there isn’t a better spot in San Diego to stop and relax, all year round.
Endeavoring to meet the needs of all aquatic enthusiasts, Action Sport Rentals (actionsportrentals.com) is located right on property. Rent a single or tandem kayak, stand up paddleboard, pedal board rental or body board rental. Prefer a leisurely watercraft, Action Sport Rentals offers sailboats, fishing boats or pontoon rent-

LEARN ABOUT THE EARTH’S ROTATION WITH A HUMAN SUNDIAL
A beautiful work of art with a hilarious story to go with it Encourage curiosity by asking your child questions about the relationship between the sun and the time of year, seasons, and how it differs in different parts of the world.
For a more hands-on approach, you can have your child act as a human sundial and track the sun throughout the day. Have your child pick a spot in your driveway or sidewalk that gets plenty of sun. Using sidewalk chalk, trace your child’s shadow on the pavement (or if your child wants to do the tracing, switch roles). Repeat this at different times throughout the day when it is sunny. You might set an alarm or use meal and snack times as your cue: 8 am, 10:30 am, 1 pm, 3:30 pm, and 6 pm. Use your chalk to record the time of day next to each shadow tracing. Then, make a note of where the sun is in the sky during each tracing.
After you’ve completed a few tracings, have your child observe the differences in their shadows. They can measure their shadow and record their observations in a notebook.
When you’ve completed a day, discuss why their shadow changes. You might ask how their shadow changed according to the sun’s position, when their shadow was the shortest and longest, or if their shadow also changes through the year.

GO STARGAZING ON WARM SUMMER NIGHTS
On those extra hot summer days, take a break from the heat and have some summer solstice fun at night instead. Go stargazing in your backyard, in a park, on the beach, or in different locations around your city. This may be a younger child’s introduction to astronomy. Older kids can learn about stars, light, our solar system, and galaxies.
There are plenty of ways to make a stargazing activity your own. If your child is fascinated by the constellations, print out a guide or use one from a book and identify them together. Many constellations can easily be spotted and recognized. After identifying these constellations, you might talk about how they got their names and who discovered or named them.
If you are visiting different locations to see the stars, talk to your child about how the night sky will look different in a big city versus a rural area. You can even measure the differences using a light meter or a camera. Light pollution from homes, cars, streets, and other buildings will affect how easily you can see the stars. Air pollution and smog can also affect visibility. Does your city have a lot of atmospheric pollution? Where is the best place to go stargazing near your home?

New Friends, Cool Activities, Unforgettable Fun: A Guide to Choosing the Right Summer Camp
BY CRYSTAL NAY
Instead of passing away lengthy summer days at home and leaving kids to their own devices, more and more families are opting for summer camp—both day camps and overnighters – with offerings right up until school starts again next month. Attending these are not only a child’s summer highlight, but also a childhood rite of passage. It’s the ultimate sign of a summer well spent.
There’s no shortage of options for summer camps, and parents may even find the process of finding the right one a little overwhelming. Sports camps, art camps, culinary camps, fashion camps, language camps, maker camps, camp camps! But, behind all the possible selections is a way to narrow it down and choose the camp that best suits your child.
The Selection
First, start with your child’s interests. Surely, you wouldn’t sign your sports star up for a theatre camp if she just can’t stand the thought of a musical, just as you wouldn’t sign up your future Tony winner for a cooking camp if he or she can’t stand the idea of sautéing an onion. Some basic online searches, sifting through social media, and reading through listings in local family magazines (much like this one!) will provide you with options for summer camps that are tailored to your child’s interests. “[Parents] need to find a place where their children can thrive and grow and have a positive experience,” explains Patricia McMaster, Director of Community Programs at Orange County School of the Arts.
Marisa Sutherland, Kids Club Director for Capistrano Valley Christian School (CVCS) agrees with McMaster’s assessment and adds “Go and look at the program, speak to others to see how they have enjoyed it in years past.”
SUMMER CAMPS
26
The Preparation
Nervousness is normal, so whether it’s you as the parent or your child who’s experiencing the twinge of anxiousness, it’s usually settled within minutes on the first day of camp. Which is a good thing, considering you can’t let that get in the way of making sure your child is fully prepared for his or her summertime activities.
Whether this is the first summer camp for your child or the fifth, there’s always that mandatory element of preparation. Camp T-shirt, sack lunch, fieldtrip permission slips. Just as you’ve probably done your annual teacher meet-and-greet to prepare your child for a new school year, you should meeting camp instructors beforehand so familiarity is established, and so you can tell your children what they can look forward to doing.
Sutherland suggests going even further to ask the director to show photos of years past and talk to your children about the excitement that awaits them.
The Experience
The camp is chosen, your child is prepped, you’re ready to go. But summer camp isn’t just a tuck-n-roll operation for parents. There are things that parents can
do to make the summer camp experience as enjoyable and enriching as possible.
Parents, take note. All of our camps directors said the primary thing that helps with the quality of your child’s experience is being on time. That’s right. Being on time for both pick-up and drop-off has an incredible impact.
Trisha Loos, director of Mad Science of South Orange County, shares with parents that the key to reinforcing the enrichment of summer camp is to listen to your child share about it, and to get as much feedback as possible. “Ask your child to tell you what they learned that day. Have them discuss the take-home projects.” For Mad Science, children take home cards to explain the work and the science they did that day.
Aside from arriving on time, prepared, and sporting those iconic summer camp T-shirts, Sutherland cannot stress enough the importance of a good night’s rest. “It’s warm in the summer, and we play outside and do off-campus activities outside.”
For McMaster, the ultimate summer camp experience is enjoyed through art. “Parents should find programs that provide the opportunity to participate in a unique experience in arts education—a program where the children can grow
as artists and individuals.” With these artistic values in mind, the summer camps offered through Orange County School of the Arts are designed for this very purpose. Their classes are taught by professional artists, and it’s through their enriching classes that students are given the opportunity to refine their skills and flourish.
Many summer camp participants react well to a small care package from their parents. If your child carries a bag (to day camp or otherwise) or sack lunch, sneak a little surprise in one of the pockets. Just as you may leave notes in your child’s lunchbox during the school year, their days spent at summer camp provide equal opportunity to do the same.
When choosing your child’s summer camp, knowledge is key. The more you know about the camp—from counselors and instructors to activities and fieldtrips—the surer you can be that your child will have an exciting and memorable summer experience. M

A Stay Above the Rest: La Jolla’s Grande Colonial Hotel
By Jody Robinson
There is architecture, and then there is design. One accounts for the specifics of buildingspecs, features. The other drags your feelings into the picture. Any good resort combines the best of both, introducing its guests to a luxury of mind and spirit: an escape for the entire being. One of the very few hotels I’ve ever found to boast such a wedding of the two also called for the union of past and present, history and modernization.
The only Four Diamond Hotel in the Village of La Jolla, The Grande Colonial Hotel has been welcoming guests to a gorgeous coastal respite for over a century. One of San Diego’s oldest original seaside hotels, the property has been completely modernized, yet remains faithful to the timeless elegance of its storied past - the sophisticated decor infused with a classic European ambiance and aesthetic. This intimate, iconic property is ideally situated amidst the pristine beaches and regal bluffs of one of Southern California’s most picturesque coastal towns.
Choose from luxurious ocean, garden, or village view rooms, sumptuous suites, vacation rental studios and indulge in an escape to the past, with all the modern amenities you might ever need right at your fingertips. Each accommodation captures the quintessential California coastal lifestyle. Our family’s Ocean Grande Double Queen room was super spacious and defined by loads of natural light and spectacular views of the Pacific, which is literally steps away. On the weekend, it’s a short stroll from the hotel to the water’s edge and the enormous grassy area (Ellen Brown-

ing Scripps Park) adjacent to the La Jolla Cove where you can peruse the handcrafted wares (jewelry, photography, paintings, textiles and woodwork) of local artisans.
My daughter and I strolled down to the La Jolla Cove each morning to watch the sealions and their pups frolic in the waves and in the evenings, our entire family trekked on foot all through the village, window shopping the scores of art galleries and boutique shops.
The emphasis on local artisanry carries through to the casually elegant
farm-to-table dining experience at The Grande Colonial’s NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar. Award-winning Chef Jason Knibb creates a unique seasonal menu dictated by the local harvest. Our family enjoyed brunch, people watching on the sidewalk patio while noshing on fresh from the oven house-made sourdough bread slathered with salted butter. Both kids indulged in fluffy blueberry lemon buttermilk pancakes that were every bit as delicious as they sound. The cuisine was excellent, the service attentive, yet unobtrusive ... the perfect way to while away a late morning.
Stay in and relax, or take a drive through La Jolla Cove to the Shores. Whatever you do, lean into the artistry of a well-designed vacation, with gracious personalized service every step of the way.

Experience the Magic and Wonder
Universal Studios Hollywood
By Jody Robinson
When they opened Harry Potter’s Wizarding World at Universal Studios more than a decade ago, I was ecstatic because our kids were in the thick of the book series and had seen all of the movies, several times. Our son dressed as Harry one Halloween, while our daughter was Hermoine. Twice.
That was then. This is now - turns out, revisiting with older kids was just as much fun. Families with young children will love Despicable Me Minion
Mayhem, the Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash, DreamWorks Theatre featuring Kung Fu Panda and the Super Silly Fun Land play area. Truth be told, my daughter and I still love Gru and the Minions and are all about Po.
We were surprised at the level of anticipation surrounding Super Nintendo World, the new immersive themed land at Universal Hollywood. Located in a recently expanded region of the popular theme park, Super Nintendo World marks its US debut with groundbreaking rides like Bowser’s Challenge and Mario Kart. Along with perfectly appointed dining at the Toadstool Cafe and shopping at the 1-UP Factory store, Super Nintendo brings one of their favorite nostalgic video games to life.
A unique combination of working movie studio and an amusement park, Universal Studios Hollywood
is fun for all ages - the kids love the thrilling rides and interactive attractions and we all love the world-class immersive shows like WaterWorld and the Special Effects Show. Let’s not forget the World Famous Studio Tour, which takes guests on a tram ride though the backlot of a real working movie studio. During the behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood movie making, visitors can see famous movie sets, experience special effects demonstrations and even come face-to-face with some of their favorite movie characters.
Highlights of our day include Transformers - The Ride-3D, the super scary (for me) Revenge of the Mummy (think high-speed roller coaster that travels forward and in reverse), Jurassic World and of course, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff.
The park was a feat to conquer before the addition of Super Mario World: now we have to level up to make it all the way through.

Club Literacy: Creating a New World of Words
BY JODY ROBINSON
BY ANN LAURENCE
In a day in age when most ten yearolds have their own cell phone, and are, at many schools, required to have their own laptop, the demand for true literacy is faltering; and therefore incredibly precious. So what are parents to do prior to age 10, when game apps and screen time take over, and many children’s love of books and reading falls by the wayside?
Tracey Pringle likes to think that instilling a love of literacy early on is the best way to develop lifelong achievers, and is betting her livelihood on it. With Club Literacy, Mrs. Pringle has turned a typical education center into a nurturing environment in which all children are encouraged and guided to reach their creative and academic potential. Dedicated to the development of lifelong readers, Club Literacy was
born out of two Bachelors degrees, one in Speech Communication, one in Early Education - and eight successful years in the trenches of public school, teaching Kindergarten through Fourth grade.
“My proudest moments have been seeing my own children develop a strong love of literature,” says Tracey. “I’m a literacy advocate, through and through.”
Credentialed in both California and North Carolina, Tracey also travels internationally to research effective educational techniques. Offering both specialty summer classes and a full lineup for the fall, Club Literacy is gearing up for another reading year. “We start with the basics - we’ll meet those ABC’s any way we can!”
ABC Club, for ages 4-5 introduces to club members through fun and exciting books, fairy tales, fables, poems, and parodies. Students enjoy
Specially designed for full and halfday kindergartners, Kindergarten Smart Start and Early Literacy both explore further the ideas and shapes of the ABC’s, building the foundation of reading readiness. Beyond simple recognition and sound links, students are provided with the opportunity to engage in cooking experiments, themed dress-ups, phonics games, creative dramatics, and even collaborate with the rest of the class to publish a class book. According to a 2013 study from the U.S. Department of Education, approximately 32 million adults in the United States can’t read. Stopping that trend before it starts, with tender, loving encouragement is a priceless gift, and Tracey and her team are proud to send students home with a wide variety of tools to succeed.
Kids progress through 123-ABC Math Journals and Book Bunch, where trueto-life mathematical situations are provided to explore and investigate. With reading, as with mathematics, the sooner a child can demonstrate their reasoning and illustrate their thinking, the stronger their confidence will be later on in school. “Many problems have multiple solutions, and by giving students the
32
chance to work through them, we reinforce phonic skills, and basic word sight recognition. Simultaneously, writing skills are strengthened!”
As a mom whose elementary-aged daughter has attended Camp Literacy’s summer camps and reading classes, I can personally attest to the fact that while what Tracey provides is a focused learning experience, she does so in an environment of fun and creativity - my daughter absolutely LOVES everything about being a part of the Club Literacy “family,” from the camaraderie and encouragement to the educational activities.
Tracey, a 2010 recipient of the WomanSage Award for her work in Child Development, loves nothing more than getting buddies together and working towards successand her Book Bunch is exactly that. “Their collective goal is to become great readers and writers, and by placing an emphasis on phonic skills and word recognition, students exploration of the worlds of pirates, mermaids, and sea monsters becomes an opportunity, not just a magic story hour.”
And before you know it - that child who would rather look at their smartphone will be saying the three little words every parent wants to hear (not “Mom, more dessert”). More. Books. Please.

SUMMER MUSIC CAMPS
New Orleans Family-Friendly Fun in the Big Easy
By Jody Robinson
When someone says “festival season” to me, the one of the first things that comes to mind is Coachella. But long before the annual music and arts festival began in Palm Desert, another season entirely captured America’s imagination: that of Louisiana’s favorite French city. With over 100 festivals year round, New Orleans is the prime destination for any type of vacation - but is especially friendly for families in the summer months.
From art and music to food and drink, seasonal celebrations, tours and an abundance of attraction, there is always something to do day or night on the banks of the lower Mississippi. Stroll the vibrant French Quarter or experience a free concert in Lafayette Square. Hop aboard a streetcar or play outside in the city’s 1300-acre City Park: complete with paddle boats, a Mother Goose-themed playground and an antique carousel. From Bourbon Street to beignets, no matter what time of year, fun is always in season in NOLA.
Immediately after school let out for the summer in early June, our family boarded a flight to the Crescent City armed with an itinerary that encompasses Creole cooking, 18th century historic structures, jazz music, ghost tours and cultural attractions – all part of a gumbo (pun intended) that has been simmering here for three centuries.
While searching online for an ideal home base, two properties stood out above the rest: The Higgins Hotel and the Loews New Orleans.
HONORING HISTORY, HEROES AND HEARTFELT HOSPITALITY
Opened just two years ago on The National WWII Museum’s campus in the Arts & Warehouse District, The Higgins Hotel (HigginsHotelNola.com) harkens back to an earlier era. An Art Deco and period-inspired aesthetic and architectural influences are evident throughout the property – from its expansive lobby defined by a floor-to-ceiling mural looming over the reception area and a myriad of elegantly arranged WWII artifacts on display to each of its 230 spacious and well-appointed guest rooms and suites –all thoughtfully equipped with modern conveniences and special touches (think ultra-comfortable beds, stylish seating and pretty spectacular views of the cityscape).
34
Higgins Hotel
Distinctive dining options here include Café Normandie for breakfast and lunch featuring sophisticated French-influenced fare and Rosie’s on the Roof – a local favorite for small plates, sandwiches and salads during the dinner hour. The latter paying homage to the new female American workforce of the WWII era. Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon representing the women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war, producing munitions and war supplies.
that gave us all a greater understanding and deeper appreciation of the epic and global scale of the war that changed the world.
LEANING INTO LUXURY
A Four-Diamond luxury property, Loews New Orleans (LoewsHotels. com) leans into the city’s love affair with art – starting at reception’s beautiful tiled mural and stained glass. Each of its 285 bright and spacious guest rooms and suites showcase original local artwork and iconic New Orleans images as accents.
The best part in my view? Its proximity to the neighboring National World War II Museum (NationalWW2Museum.org) – where we could incorporate history, education and inspiration into our vacation for a particularly memorable afternoon with our teenagers in tow. Our experience was defined by immersive exhibits, soaring aircraft and personal stories from Home Front efforts to the combat encounters of the American soldier abroad. If you go, don’t miss “Beyond All Boundaries” - a moving 4D cinematic journey produced and narrated by Tom Hanks
As lovely as the views are in each accommodation, the vistas to behold beyond the wall-to-wall windows of this 22-story Big Easy high-rise are even more mesmerizing – nearby New Orleans neighborhoods ablaze in color, the city skyline sparkling at night and the magnificent Mississippi River, always a storied beauty to behold. Each of the generously sized rooms are finished in modern blues, grays and pops of bright color and characterized by thoughtful décor and Southern charm.
For our son who recently embarked on a regular fitness regime, 24/7 access to the fitness center’s state-of-the-art
cardio and strength equipment was a huge bonus, while the indoor lap pool, whirlpool and sauna were more my speed for a little exercise and wind down at the end of the day.
DESTINATION DINING
Speaking of day’s end, Bar Peters at the Loews features Cajun-inspired entrees, light bites and hand-crafted cocktails influenced by the spirit of the city.
A friend recently turned me onto a super cool site (AtlasObscura.com) for the “definitive guide to the world’s hidden wonders,” which is where we discovered Muriel’s. New Orleans is no stranger to paranormal activity or classic Creole cuisine so we were anxious to sample both at Muriel’s Jackson Square (Muriels.com).
At this iconic French Quarter eatery, guests are said to dine amongst the patrons of the city’s past – there’s even a hidden séance
room on the second floor where a special table is reserved each night for the spirit of the former owner (cus-

tomers and employees have reported seeing objects moving around the room and voices emanating from the second floor when no one is there).
It’s easy to see why this establishment is so popular – in addition to its prime location in the heart of the French Quarter, Muriel’s menu is filled with regional favorites – including seafood specialties which were right up this seafood aficionado’s alley. The New Orleans seafood gumbo, crawfish and goat cheese crepes, shrimp and grits were a delicious introduction to creole cooking.
greens and fried catfish. My personal pick? The chicken and andouille gumbo – a hearty, rich, generously seasoned Creole stew.
And no trip to New Orleans would be complete without indulging in a few beignets at Café Du Monde (CafeDuMonde.com) – the famous fritters here are piping hot squares of doughy delight topped with con-
light and sound spectacular featuring two-story projections of the artist’s most compelling works. It is another singularly unique experience that is a both entertaining and educational family outing.
For Cajun Southern Cooking, we experienced Cochon (CochonRestaurant.com) for authentic, traditional dishes custom crafted from locally sourced pork, fresh produce and seafood. Set in a rustic, yet contemporary interior of a renovated New Orleans warehouse, the menu is characterized by a bevy of unique starters and main courses that make a meal here a truly memorable experience for the senses.
I’m particularly proud of our teens, both of whom have in recent years stretched their culinary palates. But none so much as on this trip where they had an opportunity to try crawfish pie, fried alligator with chili garlic mayonnaise, roasted pork belly with pepper jelly, bacon braised collard
fectioner’s sugar. Café Du Monde is not-to-be-missed – this French coffee stand is open 24 hours a day and has been in operation since 1862.
SIGHTSEEING AND GHOSTLY SIGHTINGS
The city’s only 360-degree observatory, Vue Orleans (VueOrleans.com) offers unparalleled views of this storied city in literally every direction you look – from the entire length of historic canal street to the way in which the Mighty Mississippi winds its way through NOLA. We ascended the 34 floors in less than 60 seconds – then had a ball challenging the kids to locate the landmarks from the previous days’ excursion.
If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a painting and are a fan of post-impressionism, don’t miss Van Gogh New Orleans: The Immersive Experience (VanGoghExpo.com). Ranked among the 12 best immersive experiences in the world by CNN, this touring exhibit is a 20,000-square-foot
New Orleans is considered to be “the most haunted city in America” so no visit here would be complete without getting a little scare on. The Ghosts of New Orleans (GhostCityTours.com) is the No. 1 tour for families and children, but is also great for history buffs and fans of the paranormal. This all-ages walking tour takes you to some of the most famous haunted locations in the French Quarter, including sites of grisly murders and crimes where the victims are said to haunt the living today and homes of famous residents whose ghosts still walk the halls of their past lives (it’s no coincidence that the tour starts right across the street from Muriel’s, whose previous owner committed suicide on the second floor (in the area that once served as the slave
quarters and is now home to the historic structure’s Séance Lounges) after losing his beloved home in a game of cards in 1814.

Raising Confident Daughters
BY ANN LAURENCE
In the tween and teen years, it’s mission critical to instill confidence in our young, impressionable girls. How can you help raise your daughter to have high selfesteem, self worth and confidence?
Teenage girls today are likely more challenged to maintain a positive selfesteem than when their moms were their age. Our society and the media set such high (and often unapproachable) standards on girls to be “perfect” and to “fit in.”
“Self esteem and happiness are not directly related to praise and awards,” says Kelly Klaus, a licensed marriage and family therapist based in San Juan Capistrano. “Self-esteem is felt with a sense of value that was honestly earned from effort of the child. ‘You are so smart,’ is very different from ‘you studied so hard to earn that grade.’”
Here are some tips to help empower our girls
PRAISE HER
But don’t compliment girls only on how they look – parents’ praise should be
focused on efforts and accomplishments rather than physical appearance. By recognizing her talents and abilities, you will help build her self-confidence.
“There are two types of praise: processoriented and outcome-oriented,” says Kelly. “The first focuses on effort, persistence and resourcefulness. When we praise our daughters for hard work and overcoming adversity, they want to keep engaging in experiences. If we praise them for the outcome, we put the emphasis on the place they arrived rather than the effort. Our daughters learn that if they are not first or win, it’s not worth the effort. It is so important to allow our daughters the gift and experience to fail at something so they appreciate their own ability to rise above the failure and feel in control.”
BE HER ROLE MODEL AND ENCOURAGE STRONG ROLE MODELS
If your daughter sees that you are happy and comfortable in your own appearance – no matter what shape or size - she
will grow up to love hers. Never put down your own body in front of your daughter and don’t have a “wardrobe crisis” in her presence.
Want to reinforce the beauty in strength? Encourage strong role models – whether it be a family member, teacher, someone in your daughter’s community or other women with admirable achievements (see page XX for feature on Inspirational, History-Making Women).
KEEP THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION OPEN
Allow your daughter to lead the conversations and really listen to what she has to say. Encourage her to talk about what’s going on in school, with her friends, or even about what’s playing on television and the things she sees in media. Have open and frank discussions about relationships, body image, appearances and peer pressure, as well as how girls are portrayed in media.
Self-esteem is felt with a sense of value that was honestly earned from effort of the child.
