Edinger Medical Group Opens New Huntington Beach Office

After 30 years in the Beachstone Plaza, Edinger Medical Group has officially relocated its Huntington Beach office from 18682 Beach Boulevard to a newly renovated building on Magnolia Street to better serve its growing patient population.

Edinger Medical Group is a physicianowned primary care practice that has been making waves in Surf City since 1961, becoming a multigenerational favorite of Orange County residents. The group is comprised of 10 internal medicine physicians, 1 family medicine physician, 4 nurse practitioners and over 60 support staff.

The group has been consistently voted “Best Medical Group in Orange County” since 2017 in the OC Register’s people’s choice contest and it has hundreds of reputable 5-star reviews to date.

What’s the secret to their popularity and success? Edinger Medical Group seems to have found the perfect balance; it is small enough to provide personal care and accessibility, but also just big enough to have all the resources patients need to get healthy and stay healthy.

In addition, Edinger understands the importance of being innovative as

the healthcare industry is ever evolving. Therefore, the group welcomes change when it will benefit their patients in the long run – which is why it was time to close the doors of its outgrown Beach Boulevard office and relocate to a more advantageous location.

Formerly a bank that was left vacant for many years, Edinger started construction at the new location in early 2024, causing a curious buzz among Huntington Beach residents and passersby.

The brand-new office, located at 20981 Magnolia Street, be-

gan welcoming patients on Monday, November 4, 2024. Since then, visitors have raved about the surplus of parking, pristine exam rooms, large windows that fill the interior with natural light and warm yet modern design.

Patients who visit the new site can expect the same high-quality care that Edinger Medical Group has provided for over 60 years, but now with an elevated look and more convenient location.

The Benefits of Using a Local Senior Living Advisor

Whether you are planning ahead or finding yourself faced with an urgent need, the process of finding the right assisted living or memory care community can feel like a daunting task.

How do you know which community will be the right fit? Will your loved one be able to receive the care and attention they need? How do you find the best situation given your budget?

Most of us would do what we normally do nowadays when we need to figure out something new – we Google it. At the very top of any Google search for “assisted living” or “memory care” will be several national web-based companies who promise to help you figure out the options and find the perfect fit.

Many people will gladly enter their phone number and email address in order to receive their custom list of curated options, only to find that these online companies are really just data aggregators, meaning that they will take your information and blast it out to every assisted living facility in the area, or they will sell your information to other advertisers.

Then suddenly, you are receiving 2030 phone calls a day from sales representatives who want you to come in for a tour. And you’re right back to feeling overwhelmed and lost in a sea of options.

Another disadvantage of using a national web-based company is that they often make questionable recommendations. In a recent article by the Washington Post, it was discovered that 37.5% of one company’s recommendations were found to have major safety and care violations. Yet those recommendations had scored high on the web-based company’s internal measuring system.

A local senior living advisor is the better choice when facing such a chal-

lenging decision. Here are some of the benefits of a local senior living advisor:

Personalized & Localized Service

• In-depth Needs Assessment

○ What are your care needs?

○ What part of town would you like to be in?

○ What kind of amenities do you like?

○ What is your budget range?

• Personalized Roadmap – a customized plan to match your particular needs

• Selection Assistance – hands-on help and guidance as you review services and amenities

• Tour Assistance – They will often personally accompany you on every tour to help facilitate the process and answer questions

• Transition Support to make the move smooth and worry free

• Clients For Life – we will continue to check in on your throughout your residency at whatever community you choose.

A local advisor is the expert in their local area. They know the places with

great reviews and attentive staff, as well as knowing which properties might not be providing great service at the moment. They have strong community connections and can provide recommendations for other experts in the senior space from movers to organizers, from real estate agents to elder law attorneys.

Your local advisor is the one who now makes all the phone calls, sets up all the tours, and personally interfaces with the sales representatives from whatever communities you are considering.

Often, our clients are facing this decision because of an immediate need or crisis. Emotions are often high and the stress levels can be through the roof. A local senior living advisor can be your partner and your advocate through this whole process, eliminating a lot of unnecessary stress so you can give more of your energy to caring for your loved one.

Each advisor has agreements with hundreds of assisted living communities and small private care homes to receive a referral fee from whatever community the client eventually chooses, enabling the advisor to of-

fer their services at no cost for their clients!

There are many reputable and trusted local senior living advisors in Orange County. Please consider the benefits when you are faced with such an important decision.

OF COMPASSIONATE HOME CARE FOR SENIORS

Seniors overwhelmingly want to stay in the comfort of their own home as they age. Our home is filled with memories and it’s what we’ve created over the years with our loved-ones. In Home Care has become a wonderful way that families can honor the wishes of their loved ones by keeping them at home as long as possible. When additional help is needed, in home care support can be an invaluable resource helping seniors maintain their independence and dignity in the environment they are most comfortable in.

Often times I am asked why someone should choose Your Home Care to provide home care assistance for a loved one. My response is always the same, our company will always look for ways to exceed your expectations and provide a personal touch and meaningful interactions. We go above and beyond to ensure our clients get the best care and feel loved and supported by the our wonderful caregiver team.

Each case is unique and each client presents an opportunity for us to find ways to exceed expectations. It could be preparing a special homecooked meal, going on a favorite outing, baking a birthday cake for the special day, playing cards, reminiscing, taking them out to their favorite places, or simply being there to hold their hand. In many cases our loving caregivers become like family.

We recently spoke to Segal Ronen, President of Your Home Care Inc. about what they do and the benefits of home care services.

Q: Tell us a little bit about Your Home Care and what it is that you do.

A: At Your Home Care, our mission is to enrich the quality of life for seniors by providing compassionate caregiving services at home. We have been in business since 2002 and have roots in the community. Our agency is licensed, insured and bonded, all our amazing caregivers are vetted, trained and background checked. We service most areas of Orange County, CA with a concentration in Laguna Woods and the surrounding cities. And we also work seamlessly with all Long-Term Care Insurance plans. We are passionate about making lives better for the seniors entrusted into our care.

Q: What is the biggest gift or or blessing that you see while providing care for seniors?

A: The culture we have created here at Your Home Care is that of kindness, and compassion. The most important thing we can offer families is that we honor the people we are entrusted to care for. Our caregivers become an important part of their lives, providing connection and consistency that they lean on for support. There is nothing we enjoy more than to see our clients smiles when they are being loved and cared for. It is a gift to see our caregivers make such a positive impact in their lives.

Q: Can you tell us about the industry trend and your place in it?

A: The senior home care industry is growing and changing. The trend we are seeing is an increase in rates, add-on fees and lengthy minimum hour requirements. At Your Home Care we don’t have lengthy minimum hour requirements, nor do we up-charge. We make every effort to be as accommodating and flexible as possible to meet the needs of our clients. We are responsive and available to our clients and caregivers when they need us. We act quickly to address and resolve any issue or concern. And we strive to provide care for as many seniors as we can.

Q: How many hours does a typical home care client start with?

A: The hours vary based on the needs of the client. Some clients like to start with a four-hour, or a six-hour shift a couple of times per week. Others know they will need more care and schedule 12-24 hour days. We do our best to accommodate the needs of our clients. We work with many clients coming home from the hospital, or skilled nursing facility who require 24 hour live in care as they work to regain their strength. Another important aspect of scheduling is establishing consistency and dependability for

the families we serve. We work hard to have the same caregivers work with our clients whenever possible in order to build rapport and strong relationships. We want our clients to light up when their favorite caregiver walks through the door. It’s a very special bond.

Q: Tell us about the team at Your Home Care.

A: Employees and clients say they appreciate working with us because they can see and feel that we care. They have access to the president of the company when needed and can see just how important they are to us. I, Segal, directly oversee everything from client acquisition, employee hiring, scheduling and office administration. But the real magic behind what we do is the talented, experienced and warm team of caregivers we have the pleasure of working alongside. Our team is filled with special people and it’s apparent they genuinely love what they do and have “a calling” for this work. They are service-minded, kind, loving people, who truly enjoy caring for seniors as though they are family. They love to share their client stories with us and love the time they spend with our seniors, learning about their lives.

Q: What types of services does home care typically cover?

A: We offer a wide range of nonmedical home care services and customize a unique and personalized

care plan for every client. These services include services such as bathing, dressing, bathroom assistance and other personal hygiene needs. We prepare meals, provide transportation for outings, Dr. appointments, and grocery shopping, as well as help with light housekeeping duties. We assist with mobility and fall prevention, helping seniors with all the activities of normal daily living they might need a hand with. Companionship and social engagement is another key aspect of what we do. Some of our seniors feel isolated and lonely or may not have family close by, so a caregiver becomes a friend to talk to and their bond is lasting. Additionally seniors with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia can benefit greatly from a caregiver who is experienced in cognitive impairments and understands the challenges they face. They are trained on the techniques used to manage behavior, keeping them safe and well supervised.

Q: What makes Your Home Care stand out above others?

A: It’s our love for the people we get to serve. We absolutely enjoy that we get to make lives better and help preserve dignity for seniors who are not able to have the autonomy over the lives and bodies the same way they used to. We truly cherish being able to support the family members who can’t always be there and want to know their loved ones are safe, cared for and enjoying life while they are not together. It comes back to our mission…to provide kind, compassionate home care services that enrich families’ lives.

We would love to speak with you. If you are considering home care for yourself or for your loved one, please call Randi Kenny directly at (949)424-9322 and let us show you just how much we care.

IS AMERICA PREPARED TO RETIRE?

A look at some ways to get ready.

Are Americans saving enough? Only 19% of U.S. adults describe themselves as “very confident” when asked about their savings. Worry spots include retiring without enough money saved (16%) and anxiety about having a “rainy day” emergency fund (14%). These findings come from the 2018 Consumer Financial Literacy Survey conducted by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. (The survey collected data from 2,017 U.S. adults.)1

Only 41% of us keep a regular budget. If you are one of those roughly two-out-of-five Americans, you’re on the right track. While this percentage is on par with findings going back to 2007, the study also finds that while 65% of Americans are saving part of their annual income towards retirement, 29% indicate they are “not at all confident” that their savings will be enough to sustain them.1

Relatively few seek the help of a financial professional. When asked “Considering what I already know about personal finance, I could still benefit from some advice and answers to everyday financial questions from a professional,” 79% of respondents agreed with the statement. Yet only 13% indicated that they would seek out the help of some sort of financial professional if they had “financial problems related to debt.” While it isn’t surprising to think that 24% of respondents would turn to friends and family, it may be alarming to learn that 18% would choose to turn to no one at all.1

Why don’t more people seek help? After all, Americans of all incomes and savings levels certainly are free

to set financial goals. They may feel embarrassed about speaking to a stranger about personal financial issues. It may also be the case that they feel like they don’t make enough money to speak to a professional, or perhaps, a financial professional is something that millionaires and billionaires have, not the average American worker. Another possibility is that they feel like they have a good handle on their financial future; they have a budget and stick to it, and they contribute to an IRA, 401(k), or have some other investments. But that 79% admission, mentioned above, indicates that a vast majority of Americans are not as confident.1

Defined goals lead to definite strategies. If you set financial objectives, you vault ahead of most Americans – at least according to these findings. A written financial strategy does not imply or guarantee wealth, of course, nor does it ensure that you will reach your goals. Yet that financial strategy does give you an understanding of the distance between your current financial situation (where you are) and where you want to be.

How much have you strategized? Retiring without a financial strategy is an enormous risk; retiring with a strategy that hasn’t been reviewed in several years is also chancy. A relationship with a financial professional can help to bring you up to date about what you need to do and provide you with more clarity and confidence when it comes to the financial future.

A NEW CHAPTER IN DEPRESSION TREATMENT

We are excited to announce that our clinic (Renew Ketamine Infusion) is now offering SPRAVATO® (esketamine), a groundbreaking nasal spray FDA approved specifically for treatment-resistant depression. Most importantly, it is often covered by insurance for those who meet the eligibility criteria. Building on our years of experience providing intravenous ketamine therapy, we’re equipped with the expertise to offer SPRAVATO® in a way that maximizes its benefits for those who need it most.

SPRAVATO® is a form of ketamine, a medication we’ve been using successfully for years to help individuals with conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. Unlike traditional ketamine, however, SPRAVATO® is FDA-approved specifically for treatment-resistant depression, meaning it’s available for patients who haven’t found relief with other antidepressants. SPRAVATO® is unique because it works on different brain receptors than most antidepressants. It targets the NMDA receptor, a glutamate receptor that plays a crucial role in mood regulation, which allows for a rapid-acting effect.

Why Choose SPRAVATO®?

One of the primary benefits of SPRAVATO® is its rapid onset, offering relief often within hours to days instead of weeks. This can be life-changing for patients whose depression hasn’t responded to other treatments. It has also been proven to be effective when other traditional antidepressants have not worked. Additionally, the SPRAVATO® nasal spray is administered under the supervision of a healthcare provid-

er in our clinic, where patients can be monitored closely for two hours. This setup ensures a safe and supportive environment, as patients experience the treatment in a controlled space with access to healthcare staff.

As part of the strict safety requirements established by the FDA, SPRAVATO® must be administered in a certified clinic, like ours, with experienced staff available to provide both physical and emotional support. SPRAVATO® can cause dissociative effects or an increase in blood pressure, but under our care, these side effects are carefully monitored and managed to ensure the treatment is as safe as possible.

Insurance Coverage for SPRAVATO®

One of the most encouraging aspects of SPRAVATO® is that it is often covered by insurance for those who meet the eligibility criteria. While ketamine infusions are rarely covered, SPRAVATO®—as an FDA-approved treatment—qualifies for coverage with many insurance plans, making this advanced treatment far more accessible. We assist patients through the insurance process to help minimize the financial barriers to care.

Our Experience Makes the Difference

One patient at a time. You will never be alone. You will always be with a clinician and female nurse. You will never go home with the medicine. As pioneers in ketamine therapy, we at Renew Ketamine Infusion, have years of experience helping patients benefit from ketamine’s unique properties.

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician

Our team has been deeply involved in the field, staying informed about the latest research and refining our protocols to ensure safe, effective care. This history of experience is a strong advantage when offering SPRAVATO®, as we’re already well-versed in both the technical aspects of administering ketamine-based treatments and the patient support that enhances each session’s therapeutic potential.

Our staff understands the complexities of treatment-resistant depression and works closely with each patient to ensure they’re getting the most out of every session. With SPRAVATO®, our commitment is to provide a comprehensive, compassionate approach that supports both the medical and emotional needs of each individual.

Is SPRAVATO® Right for You?

If you or someone you know has struggled with depression that hasn’t responded to traditional therapies, SPRAVATO® could be a transformative option. With the combination of our expertise and the unique benefits of SPRAVATO®, we are here to help you find a path forward. To learn more or discuss your eligibility for SPRAVATO®, contact us to schedule a free consultation.

We’re thrilled to expand our services with SPRAVATO®, offering a new hope for individuals battling treatment-resistant depression.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong

places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)

Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.

After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever

Audio / Video

leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.

And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply

look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.

If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Owners Skip Myers and Jon Colburn and their team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space.

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

The technicians and designers who work with clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Jon. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

Skip and Jon are also advocates for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” says Jon. “There’s the televi-

sion, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with the experts at ReelTime and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

E is for Engineering!

How Stratford’s Engineering Curriculum Takes Students to the Next Level in STEM/STEAM Education

“Scientists study the world as it is; engineers create the world that has never been.”
– Theodore von Karman, Hungarian-American mathematician, aerospace engineer, and physicist

Engineers develop new technologies or improve existing ones to increase their benefits, decrease known risks, and meet societal demands. They ask questions, define problems, plan, investigate, construct explanations, and design solutions. Children are naturally curious: they are eager to learn the “how and why” of everything: from “why does a beaver build a dam” to “how does a windmill work?” We encourage our curious and budding engineers of the future to understand the answers to these questions through hands-on engineering projects embedded in Preschool to Middle School science and engineering curriculum. Critical thinking, innovation, collaboration, and communication skills are intricately woven into the topics that students learn in their Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aligned science curriculum.

STARTING ENGINEERING CONCEPTS EARLY

Early learners, Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten students, love working with their hands! You can hear the exciting sounds and playful investigations in the classrooms during a science unit on-ramps and pathways. What might seem like simple play is actually quite complex, as children tackle big ideas around energy, force, and motion. After exploring the relationship between materials, the learning culminates in a design challenge: build a system that a small marble can move through. Our early engineers eagerly build, test, and try again until they achieve success together. In addition to feeling a sense of accomplishment, the children begin to understand how mistakes are opportunities to learn…a lesson for a lifetime!

Engineering, the all-important “E” in STEM and STEAM education – in this new age of technology, a robust engineering curriculum is more essential than ever. At Stratford School, our engineering curriculum is designed to prepare students to meet the unique challenges of the future armed with a solid engineering foundation from which they can build upon, whether they choose to continue their studies in any of the many engineering specialties that exist today or use those critical engineering principles to improve systems and solve problems in any field they decide to go into.

DESIGNING SOLUTIONS FOR THE FUTURE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

In addition to being integrated into the science curriculum, engineering is also offered as a choice elective at Stratford Middle School. Students

who take Engineering design a sustainable futuristic city using engineering design principles and participate in the FutureCity Competition every year. Our students have consistently demonstrated innovative thinking in creating physical models of the city using mainly recycled materials. Stratford teams have placed in the top five positions in the past several years. One year, the FutureCity theme focused on designing a wastefree city inspired by the principles of a circular economy. Stratford students secured the first position in the regional competition and moved on to the national level. Students worked hard to create a future city that produces zero waste, can accommodate any age or ethnicity, and can ensure the comfort, safety, and convenience of its residents. A summary of the numerous components that make their city unique include the water filtration system, which filters water to be reused, the stacked agriculture farms that mimic natural environments and minimize space use, solar panels, wind turbines, and other examples of renewable energy.

At Stratford, in addition to developing the skills of creativity, curiosity, and perseverance through the engineering design process, our students learn a growth mindset and treat each challenge as an opportunity for growth and success in the future years!

Abiding Savior Lutheran School & Preschool

Building Christ-Centered Leaders

My husband and I remember our kids’ preschool years. Which will forever be known in our home as the grouping of years when we received advice - solicited and otherwise - from everyone we knew about which school has the best standardized test scores, or the greatest teacher of all time, the coolest playground, the worst cafeteria lunches. While all that is seemingly important, we remember being more concerned with selecting a school that would combine curricular learning with foundational development for our kids’ bodies and spirits as well. It’s a particular feat to emerge from university well educated to be sure, but what good is it really to gain the world and lose your soul?

Luckily for parents of school-aged children in South OC, it’s not necessary to spend long hours searching for a program that combines a culture of mission with a developmental approach in teaching (whereby students learn through play, movement and music) and an elementary school experience that follows along

with California State Standards and benchmarks to guide their teaching through mainstream curriculums.

Voted best faith-based school and preschool in Orange County, Abiding Savior Lutheran School takes very seriously the Biblical command to “train up a child in the way they should go, for when they are old they will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22). But what sets its campus apart from every other Preschool - 8th in the county? Parents and students would say it’s because Abiding Savior’s administration and teachers “bring [their] hearts to work.”

teaching staff is absolutely the best. They give so much of themselves to the families of Abiding Savior. They know each and every student in a very special way. They take into account their learning styles and if they are going through something that needs their attention.”

Emphasizing a growth mindset built on solid academic instruction and preparation for high school and beyond is key, built on a foundation of learning with the goal of “building Christ-Centered leaders” through an engaging curriculum, empowering social development and enriching service activities. Small class sizes leads to more individualized attention.

“Our preschool and elementary school share the same mission statement: Joyfully and intentionally make and nurture disciples who make disciples,” says Ms. Lucas. “We do that by loving, serving and connecting. We have weekly chapel services, daily religion classes and our Bibilcal Worldview is woven throughout our curriculum.

“Because of our culture, the comment that we hear most often when people walk onto campus is that they feel so welcome,” says Principal Donna Lucas. “When a student enrolls here they are more than just a student, they are a part of our family. They are important and special because they are a child of God. I believe that our

Service is a cornerstone of Abiding Savior’s mission. Students and staff collect offerings for many nonprofit organizations throughout the region, including NEGU, Disaster Relief Funds and other church outreach programs. Over 300 toys are collected each year for Spark of Love, over 500 boxes are packages for Operation Christmas Child and the school’s annual food drive benefits South County Outreach and Abiding Savior’s own pantry - amazing generosity for a school of just under 300 students.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

DESTINATION

DINING

Fancy yourself a foodie? Sandos is an epicurean delight. The extensive list of eateries on-site transports guests several continents from delicious Mediterranean-inspired seafood specialties at Riviera to La Toscana’s classic Italian cuisine.

Asian so El Templo’s traditional Japanese teppanyaki house where “playing with your food is the name of the game” was right up our alley. Chefs chopped, grilled, tossed and flamed a delicious dinner coupled with high energy entertainment. And no Mexico vacation would be complete without sampling authentic regional fare – offered here as a beautiful buffet laid out under the massive palapa roof of Las Máscaras amidst a colorful backdrop of Mexican masks and artwork.

Speaking of entertainment, there is no shortage of nightly shows. Our favorite was the Sacred Fire Ceremony set at city center to tell the tale of a traditional Mayan legend. On our last night, we wound down the evening at Magic Town, where we played Mexican games and enjoyed the vibrant music of Juan Gabriel.

L’Elefant Bar provides a popular watering hole whether you are in the mood for a cappuccino or something a little stronger. Specialty drink options abound in and out of the water – get cozy on the terrace at El Manglar for charming views of the river and mangrove or swim up to the Sirena bar at the lively main pool.

SANDOS AQUAPARK

A thrilling water wonderland with slides and attractions for all ages is the perfect way for the littles to expend a ton of excess energy while grownups relax poolside. For our part, an afternoon spent here allowed for great parent/ teen bonding as we alternated between “racing” down multiple waterslides and floating along a luxurious lazy river. Best yet, no jungle or mangrove forest was moved or impacted by the waterpark’s construction - ensuring that a minimal carbon footprint and a commitment to environmental preservation remains a key feature in the litany of unforgettable reasons to choose this premier destination for your next family adventure.

A variety of cuisines, handcrafted cocktails, spacious accommodations, abundant indoor and outdoor activity and unparalleled service at Playa del Carmen’s eco-luxury resort on the Riviera Maya makes the proverbial chasm between memory-making family-fun and an all-inclusive vacation look like a paved road to paradise.

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions.

Q Should I pay attention to wine ratings? What do they mean?

A At the end of the day all wine ratings really are are opinions and scores from people who drink and know a lot about wine.

So if you need some help picking out a wine from a region you know nothing about, then sure, take a look at an online magazine and see what some of the ratings say. Generally, 88-90 points and higher mean the wine is going to be good. But once you get to the high 90’s you’re likely going to be paying a lot more for them, mainly because they have the high rating.

But I can let you in on a little secret, many amazing producers out there don’t even get their wines rated! The best way to find these is to look for wines with high ratings, remember the areas they come from, and then look for other producers in the same areas. You can often find killer wines for a fraction of the price when doing it this way. Another secret… this is exactly the way Somm’s Stash wines are made

Q How long do wines stay good after opening?

A This is an easy one, but still important. In general, wines will still be good for a day or two after you open them, but will start to degrade a bit from the moment you open them. Usually by day three you’ll notice the wines aren’t as good as they were when first opened, and by days four and beyond the wines just don’t taste right.

A little hint to get an extra day or two out of opened red wine is to seal the bottle with a cork or rubber stopper and store the half empty bottle in the fridge! The low temp in the fridge helps slow the degradation process. Just let the wine slowly warm up in a glass when you want one, cupping your hands around the glass will speed this up a bit.

Q What are sulfites and are they bad?

A We’ve all heard it… “Do you have any wines without sulfites? They give me headaches.” This is when the som-

melier mentally puts his or her palm to their face.

In the recent social-media-driven years, the word “sulfites” has become the new bad word in wine. But why? When did we become so focused on this one component in wine, treating it like a poison? It’s mentioned with an almost villainous undertone now, like some evil wizard is adding it to wine when no one is looking.

In reality, sulfites have been a known part of wine making for a thousand years. They are harmless to almost everyone and occur naturally in all wines. Yes… I said naturally in all wines.

Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people.

In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine.

The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party.

It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries.

Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

Mission Viejo Wigs: Where Customers are “Family”

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.

But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.

It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”

Thank you Betty!

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”

There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.

When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired  hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

Why Repipe when you can ?

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

Pipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home.

Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide.

Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.”

Pool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there is a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.”

In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different.

Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching.

“Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

To connect with Jason and his team, call (866) 567-5106 or visit www.WhyRePipe.com

We have a ton of experience with all kinds of doors, no matter how old, what material, or what brand.”

Performance & Professionalism: Dr. Slide-Door

Several times a year my husband and I resolve to embark on a litany of long overdue home improvement endeavors. Clean out the garage. Pare down our closets of ill-fitting clothing. Fix broken things. Like many fellow homeowners, the latter often leads down a rabbit hole of deferred maintenance projects.

Acommon refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced.

Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes.

Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them, he stepped in with a solution. “Usually people think they just have to be replaced, but that isn’t the case!

If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.

Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site.

“Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.”

With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions.

Often, what sets business owners apart from their competitors is passion. The drive to do what no one else is doing. For some, it’s perfectionism. The desire to get it correct, or perform with timeliness under contract. For Ryan Curnow, potential is the key word. Most importantly, how it can enhance his client’s day to day, when promises are actually kept, and projects get finished.

Inspired years ago by a well-known household name in contracting, Ryan pledged to treat his own employees with respect, appreciation, and dedication - which in turn ensures he and his team are able to help homeowners achieve the kitchen of their dreams.

“We show up on time, we listen carefully, we deliver on what we promised the customer we would do.” The transformations Ryan and his employees set about to execute go beyond the simple look of the project, delivering outstanding service and

high-quality renovations that “make your kitchen the heart of your home.”

There’s also no second-guessing whether or not the photos you saw in the glossy magazine were an actual kitchen or a rendering. And the real kicker is that if you like the bones of your existing kitchen and your cabinets are structurally sound, then a tune-up might be all you need.

Kitchen Tune-Up specializes in five core services: the original kitchen tune-up, which is an artistic restoration of original factory finished cab-

inets, cabinet painting, redooring, refacing and custom cabinets. Every step of the way, you’ll be greeted with collaboration, and a bespoke solution to your specific needs.

Looking for an updated kitchen style? Refresh without replacing all the cabinets by simply replacing the doors and drawer fronts. Kitchen seem dark and dated? Crave a pop of color? Ryan’s cabinet painting service offers a cost-effective transformation whereby your cabinet doors and drawer fronts are whisked away for cleaning and painting and reinstalled for a fresh look.

“Restoring your existing wood cabinets in an easy process that takes less than a day is so satisfying for us,” says Ryan. “When you combine wood reconditioning and changing out your cabinet hardware, you can create a modern new look in very little time.”

Every step of the way, you’ll be greeted with collaboration, and a bespoke solution to your specific needs. Ryan’s commitment is to tailored fixes or custom creations right alongside outstanding service. Ensuring your space remains functional and timeless no matter the update, he and his team strive to truly make your kitchen the “heart of your home.”

Life. Organized.

Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.

Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”

I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply

a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.

Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.

“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”

Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.

“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”

Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy

Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”

“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”

In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

South Coast Shutter and Shades

Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”

Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.

“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"

Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

California Gun Services Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal

After my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house and helping to maintain the garden.

One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”

Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services (CGS), Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in, I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.

My grandma was afraid the grandkids might find it and would “just feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishionersmany of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

A BUSINESS IS BORN

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project.

“Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely,” he says. “So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”

Over the years, Jeff has encountered a variety of different circumstances where individuals seek his assistance in disposing of unwanted firearms. All situations call for professionalism and expertise, but some also require a more delicate approach. One such case was a recent call by a family whose patriarch was once a responsible gun owner, but was now suffering the early signs of dementia. “His family wanted the firearms removed for safety reasons, but the gentleman lawfully owns the guns so it’s important to have a heightened sensitivity so as not to create upset,” says Jeff.

In addition to lay people looking for help, Jeff and his team also assist estate and probate attorneys representing

clients who are surviving family members in possession of unwanted firearms to navigate the process of safe gun disposal.

Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. Jeff adds that “ … we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”

San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgeable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”

As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have is California Compliant.

“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.

“Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

www.CaliforniaGunServices.com

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:

GUN AUDIT

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

GUN DISPOSAL

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

GUN TRANSFERS

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

AMMUNITION AUDIT

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home.

Your Project, Your Way

Transforming Your Space with the Stars of Flooring: Floor Coverings International

Over the years since we moved into our (new to us) home, my husband, Tim, and I have embarked on several major home improvement projects. Exterior paint was on the menu, as well as hardwood floors for the living and dining room. I’d like to think we’ve done an admirable job of defining our family’s “style,” laying out options and evaluating flooring samples.

It’s now over a decade later and we’re again contemplating moves to freshen up the dated design in a few spaces. Although Tim is a seasoned pro at coordinating projects, I’m admittedly more than a little intimidated by the process. Which is why I’m happy to have discovered the locally and veteran-owned Floor Coverings International. Justin Schuhardt, who owns the franchise location serving South Orange County, shares the “convenience philosophy” that uncomplicates the endeavor of home-makeovers since the parent company’s inception in 1988.

Justin, who has been helping his OC customers take the stress out of renovating since 2016, is an army veteran and 25-year supply chain professional. I’m certain flooring was an easier issue to navigate than some of the big-

gest logistical challenges of our time, and Justin was equally methodical in choosing which business to represent in following his passion for making homes beautiful.

“I didn’t want it to just be a contractor’s license and check on the table,” he says. “In Flooring Coverings International, I found the perfect match for my future customer’s investment in time, energy, and money.”

And the process couldn’t be easier. Justin and his team of highly trained flooring professionals come to you with a mobile flooring showroom featuring 3000+ design samples. You’ll work with the same team from start to finish to create your ideal space by balancing your vision with budgetary needs and advising on different aspects of each flooring option and the specific installation requirements.

Discover inspiration, style and the perfect products for your project. Choose traditional, mid-century modern, transitional, eclectic. Select carpet, luxury vinyl plank, hardwood or laminate. Then the company’s profes sional flooring contractors work within your busy life to schedule a convenient

time for you. Every aspect of your life will be considered! They’ll move any furniture you need them to, remove and haul away your old flooring, thoroughly prepare the subfloor for your new floors, install your new floor coverings and add new trim if necessary and finally, clean up and remove any excess product.

“We pride ourselves on delivering the professionalism and trust you can count on,” says Justin. “We arrive on time and provide clear project timelines. You’ll receive a down-to-thepenny quote and guarantee that we will not be happy (with the project) until you are.”

BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

I haven’t been a kid in a while. What I recall about music lessons is that they were forced, and more importantly, stodgy.

Beginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach.

A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections.

“The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur-

suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff.

Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.”

If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).
