We kept falling and laughing — we never really skated that day. A year later, we were married. Ten years later, we’re still married and still laughing.

‘Uncle’ Ed Is Dead ormer Kansas City television host and convicted sex offender “Uncle” Ed Muscare died January 8 of lung cancer. His last stop: a Florida prison. He was 79 years old.

On January 12, Muscare’s wife, Marion Muscare-Vianney, posted a tear-filled video, announcing the death of her “beloved” to the nearly 22,000 subscribers who follow the couple’s YouTube channel, “Edarem.” So far, more than 400 comments have been posted by viewers offering their condolences to the widow of the dead pedophile. Yes, Muscare was a child molester, convicted in 1986 of fondling a 14-year-old Florida boy during a family gathering in Orlando.

Many longtime Kansas Citians remember having uneasy feelings about Muscare, but not because he hosted late-night horror movies during the early 1980s (one of his on-air personas was, in hindsight, especially icky: “The Creeper”). He also was the star of a children’s show called 41 Treehouse Lane.

In 2006, Muscare resurfaced, posting bizarre homemade movies and music videos on YouTube. In one incredibly disturbing bit of footage from a 2009 video, a dog is shown suckling on Muscare’s bare stomach. Muscare, feeding off the encouragement of his viewers, kept posting.

noted Muscare’s whereabouts and sex-offender status the previous year. In April 2009, Midtown Miscreant blogged about the dog video and embedded it. Fark picked it up, and Uncle Ed went viral. Some commenters took to calling him the “Singing Sex Offender.” This got Muscare in trouble — as a term of his release from the earlier sentence, he wasn’t supposed to be online. He was forbidden from having Internet contact not only with children but also with anyone.

In 2009, authorities told Muscare to stop posting his videos. He continued to make new ones, though. In January 2010, a Florida judge sentenced Muscare to five years in prison for violating his probation. After that, Marion kept putting up videos of her husband. In October 2010, cracked.com listed Edarem’s happy little corner of YouTube as one of “the seven most unintentionally creepy places on the Internet.”

The past can be forgiven, but YouTube never forgets. And seeing Uncle Ed and Mrs. Uncle Ed wave his tattered old freak flag makes it hard to feel sorry for either of them. By failing to register as a sex offender and then interacting with people online, he didn’t just break the law but flaunted his disregard for it.

And the viewers who lapped up those crazy videos? Not helping. It all added up to a disgusting display that kept a convicted sex offender in the spotlight.

One of Muscare’s viewers calls him, in a post-mortem comment, “a national treasure of sorts.” Another viewer writes: “Goodnight, sweet prince.” There were a lot of R.I.P.s and emoticon hearts to go with Marion’s public grieving. It’s a lot to stomach.

Muscare’s obituary asks that those wanting to honor his memory “please plant a tree, become an organ donor, or make a contribution to the American Lung Cancer foundation.”

An appropriate donation would be to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.

eter Kinder peaked on February 8, 2008, when he announced that he would not run for governor.

Just two weeks earlier, Republican Gov. Matt Blunt had announced that he would not run for re-election, and almost immediately after that, Kinder jumped into the race. But the campaign was not to be. Instead, on a stage at Lincoln Days, an annual gathering for state Republicans in Springfield, Missouri, Kinder found himself sounding a very public retreat.

“Since my earliest days of involvement, the reason for being involved has been larger than any one person.

It has been emphatically not about me. It’s about the cause you and I share.”

Kinder did not smile. Grasping at the sides of the lectern, he continued.

“I am here today to tell you that after visiting with friends and being gratified by their support all across this state — grassroots volunteers, officeholders, fundraisers, captains of industry, people in the street — and being humbled by their support, that I will nonetheless stand down from the governor’s race here tonight in the interest of the larger cause that you and I share.

I will run for re-election as lieutenant governor. I will run the strongest possible race I can. I will take the game to the other team, and we will win this election in November.”

Applause and cheers rose from the hotel ballroom, lifting the Republicans to their feet. Kinder waved the crowd back down.

“I look forward to that kind of ovation someday when I announce for a higher office,” he said.

If order had any place in state politics, Kinder might have received the standing ovation he envisioned on November 20, 2011, when he was most recently slated to announce his candidacy for governor. In preparation for the kickoff, his campaign staff had booked a large room at Ray’s Plaza Center in Cape Girardeau, Kinder’s hometown. U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, a Republican representing Missouri’s 8th District, had been tapped to introduce the lieutenant governor. Multiple aides confi rm that one week before the event, plans were in place to bus supporters in and order a “Kinder for Governor” banner to hang behind the stage.

None of this came to pass. Instead, Kinder rattled Missouri politics when he announced on November 18 that he would not run for governor after all. Dave Spence, a St. Louis businessman, would have that honor, and Kinder would seek re-election.

This seemingly abrupt decision ran counter to the conventional wisdom that the 2012 gubernatorial contest would pit the Democratic incumbent, Gov. Jay Nixon, against Kinder, the default Republican frontrunner since 2008. But Kinder’s decision was neither abrupt nor unexpected. In the eyes of party insiders, it was inevitable. hen last April began, the only perceived inevitability was that Kinder would be his party’s candidate for governor. He had received the joint blessing of the Missouri Republican Party and the Republican Governors Association, which was already working to book big-name headliners for Kinder’s future fundraising events. The state’s premier GOP donors were onboard, too. According to former staffers, Kinder originally planned to announce his candidacy in the late spring.

Plans changed April 3, though, when the St. Louis Post-Dispatch ran a damning frontpage story, “Kinder spends time in St. Louis, courtesy of taxpayers.” During five years, the paper reported, Kinder had racked up more than $35,000 in hotel bills by spending some 300 nights in some of St. Louis’ ritziest rooms — and charging everything to the state.

Two days after the story hit, Kinder faced Capitol reporters in the state Senate’s Pershing Gallery at a last-minute press conference. Standing before a painting of Gen. John Pershing,

who had ascended to the Army’s highest rank, Kinder looked nervous but resolute.

Kinder insisted that he had done nothing wrong but, to put the story behind him, said he would repay all of the money.

“I seek to move this nimbus off the horizon, and let’s get to the real issues that concern this state,” he said.

But the nimbus sat, and Kinder’s own issues deepened and multiplied. As April ended, Kinder announced that he would pay back even more to the state — $52,000 total — out of his own pocket. During the same week, it

emerged that Kinder’s office calendar, which could verify whether his hotel stays had been for official or for personal reasons, was not lost, as his staff had claimed. Rather, it had been saved all along with the Office of Administration, one floor below Kinder’s office in the Statehouse.

Also that week, Kinder left the keys to his Ford Flex in the ignition while the car was parked at his Cape Girardeau home. Thieves stole the vehicle, crashed it into a gun store and then set it on fire.

In The Kansas City Star at the end of that week, Steve Kraske wrote what many political insiders were thinking: “Peter Kinder surely looked into the mirror at some point last week and questioned the wisdom of his birth.”

Kinder was born in Cape Girardeau in 1954, the third of four boys. His father, a pediatrician, was not political; his father’s attorney and best friend, Rush Limbaugh Jr., was. Kinder has publicly credited “Mr. Rush” and his sons, among them radio host Rush Limbaugh III, with sparking his interest in politics.

“I began to get interested in this business ... in the early primary grades,” Kinder said in his 2008 Lincoln Days speech. “The campaign was the Goldwater campaign, and I remember hearing Mr. Rush hold forth about it. And I can tell you that when you listen to his son, I can hear the old man booming out through his son, three hours a day, five days a week. It had a great impression on me.”

At 10 years of age, Kinder began stuffing envelopes after school at Republican headquarters, where Millie Limbaugh, Rush III’s mother, was in charge.

In 1972, when Kinder was 17 and a student at Central High School in Cape Girardeau, he entered one of his first political contests: a mock election organized by a few teachers to inform students about voting. The campaign was limited to a five-minute speech, and Kinder’s platform was constrained by the candidate he was portraying: the incumbent president.

With 119 of the 215 votes cast, Kinder won the fake election — and, in an irony apparent only now, did so with the last name “Nixon.”

Less than a decade later, in 1981, he was managing Republican Bill Emerson’s first congressional campaign and met David Barklage, who also worked for the campaign.

The two became friends and worked together again beginning in 2000, when Kinder served as president pro tem of the Missouri Senate.

November 10, he dropped a bomb: He announced that he would halt his bid for lieutenant governor and instead focus on spending time with his two children as he and his wife divorced. That afternoon, in a private caucus meeting with House Republicans, Tilley said he had decided not to run for governor for the same reasons that he would not run for lieutenant governor.

Halfway across the state, though, another threat to Kinder’s candidacy was taking shape. Dave Spence, a multimillionaire and the president and CEO of Alpha Packaging in St. Louis, had been eyeing Kinder warily since Chapman went public. He wondered whether the lieutenant governor would have the political fortitude to recover.

On October 24, as Spence seriously considered entering the race for governor, he cut Kinder a check for $5,500. In an interview with the Associated Press, Spence called the donation “a gesture of friendship.”

Roughly two weeks later, the “friends” — fraternity brothers who attended the University of Missouri at different times and did not meet each other until later in life — decided to size each other up. Over coffee in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton hotel in St. Louis, one of the hotels named at the start of Kinder’s slide, Spence told Kinder where he stood.

“Dave sits down with Peter and says, ‘I’m really serious about doing this. I don’t think

Kinder greets Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon at the 2010 State of the State address. you can mount a credible campaign. I’m going to run,’ ” a source with knowledge of the meeting tells The Pitch. “Peter didn’t think he was serious.”

But the lieutenant governor wanted to be clear that he, for one, was still very serious.

On November 13, Kinder’s spokesman, Jared Craighead, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Kinder was all in.

“The lieutenant governor will be announcing his plans in the next two weeks,” Craighead said, “but he will not be announcing that he is running for re-election as lieutenant governor.”

State Sen. Brad Lager (R-Savannah) took that statement as his cue to enter the lieutenant governor race left open by Tilley’s exit. The day before Lager announced his candidacy on November 14, he called Kinder’s campaign to confirm that Kinder would not change his mind.

“They said, ‘No.’ Period,” Lager says.

But Kinder had already undone his own campaign — with a tweet.

nlike most politicians, Kinder writes and sends his own Twitter updates. The practice has sometimes created controversy for the lieutenant governor. On June 7, 2010, Kinder noted via Twitter an “astonishing explosion of lefty Jew hatred.” On September 2 that year, he tweeted a link that he called a “MUST READ :)”

The tweet Kinder issued on November 11, 2011, then, was not his most outrageous.

And it wasn’t wholly surprising, either. The timing, however, was a killer.

It read: “RT @BrentTeichman: Free Wings today at @Hooters for Veterans and Active Duty Military Personnel... 11/11/11. Happy #Veterans Day #MO #pdk.”

If talk of Tammy Chapman had dissipated at all in the Missouri political firmament, the tweet revived it. When staffers asked him about the tweet, Kinder’s reaction was nonchalant, says one Republican who spoke to Kinder that day. By that afternoon, though, the tweet had been deleted.

But it was too late. Bloggers had picked up on the mention of Hooters. So had Spence.

One Republican staffer with knowledge of Spence’s reaction says the tweet “pushed Dave over the edge of the cliff.”

“His reaction was, ‘This is ridiculous — I’m getting in,’ ” the staffer says. “It became abundantly clear to him, with Kinder’s lack of discipline, that he had to do it.”

The Hooters tweet was posted on a Friday.

The following Tuesday, Spence announced that he would run for governor. In an interview with the Associated Press, he confirmed that he was “100 percent committed.”

Kinder, aides say, was not surprised, but he was angry and disappointed. During the days that followed, Kinder huddled with a close group of aides and confidants to decide what his next step would be. Could the candidate survive an expensive primary against Spence, only to face a taxing general election against Nixon?

A path to victory no longer seemed to exist.

“It was almost like two guys standing in the alley waiting to see who draws their gun first,” one Republican staffer says of Kinder and Spence. “Peter essentially put his guns down and said, ‘I’m not interested in a duel and I’m not going to do this.’ ” Late on the afternoon of November 18, Kinder announced in a statement that he would instead seek re-election as lieutenant governor and endorse Spence for governor.

“I believe, after numerous conversations with Dave Spence, that he is the Republican

Party’s best chance of defeating Jay Nixon,” Kinder’s statement read.

Kinder now faces a primary against Lager, in addition to state Sen. Luann Ridgeway (R-Smithville) and lawyer Mike Carter, as he seeks to hold on to his office.

Those close to Kinder say they haven’t ruled out a go at the governor’s mansion in 2016 — if Kinder is elected to a third term as lieutenant governor. But they admit that it’s tough to look forward when the ink on this campaign’s eulogy isn’t yet dry.

Reflecting on Kinder’s stillborn bid for governor, one Republican close to Kinder lists the miniature disasters that, one by one, bled the campaign to death: the hotel scandal, the subsequent decrease in cash flowing into the campaign, the Chapman scandal and another hit to fundraising, the public complaints from prominent GOP members that followed.

“It was,” the aide says, “death by a thousand paper cuts.”

When Kinder planned to announce his candidacy for governor in 2008, he couldn’t wait to schedule a proper kickoff event. Instead, he unveiled his plans in an interview with the Associated Press.

“I’m in,” Kinder told the AP. He assured the reporter that he would not change his mind: “No. Crossed the Rubicon.”

Instead, Sarah Steelman and Kenny Hulshof — at the time, the state treasurer and a U.S. congressman, respectively — were left to duke it out for the Republican nomination for governor. Kinder, the odd man out, was left to say at Lincoln Days that he would run again for lieutenant governor.

Unfortunately, in the two-week adrenaline rush that followed Kinder’s AP blurt, his staff had ordered the requisite first batch of “Kinder for Governor” T-shirts.

Four years later, those shirts are still in boxes.

Some political insiders wear the T-shirts anyway in private — perhaps as part of a morbidly funny inside joke or as an ode to what might have been. Maybe someday, they’ll be worn without irony, in a Missouri where everything finally goes according to Peter Kinder’s plans.

Saturday marks the second anniversary of the controversial Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling: the Supreme Court decision that equates money with speech and instills personhood on businesses, making it possible for corporations to pump unlimited funds into political campaigns. Move to Amend is still pissed. The national group is trying to raise support for a constitutional amendment that would nullify Citizens United. Activists in 80 cities around the country are protesting outside judicial centers today — when courts aren’t in session. Kansas City’s Occupy the Courts action, organized by Mary Lindsay and other local Move to Amend supporters, takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at Ilus Davis Park, across the street from the federal courthouse (400 East Ninth Street). Expect five faux Supreme Court justices, four of them dressed in robes decorated with corporate logos — to symbolize the corruption of the courts. In the mid-1990s, political scientist Samuel Huntington warned the West to prepare for the end of its influence. In his book Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, the Harvard professor also predicted the deterioration of global politics, due to increased conflict over religion, identity, language and history.

To this day, the book infuriates and gratifies conservatives and liberals alike. “It’s the most controversial book in American politics in the last 20 years, and it’s absolutely fascinating,” says Gary Armstrong, a political science professor at William Jewell College. He says Huntington was wrong about a lot of things but right about some others. Consider your own thoughts about Huntington’s theories when Armstrong summarizes them in a 7 p.m. lecture that promises to intrigue both those new to and those familiar with the topic. All right, no lectures here about the monolithic artistic achievement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. But let’s talk jobs for a minute. About 300 years ago, the composer needed one. (Employment numbers for musical geniuses, in any age, have never been what folks nowadays call robust.) So Bach looked up a fancy man he’d run into on a harpsichord-shopping trip and sent him some work samples: the six discrete pieces that make up the (monolithic!)

Last winter, comedian Dov Davidoff stopped in at KC’s Fox 4 morning show, and the interview was so awkward that it was awesome. “I just try to behave,” he says about the painful promotional appearances. “I won’t smile or anything.

I can’t.” Raised in a north New Jersey junkyard as the son of a world-traveling, communemember mother and a businessman-fromthe-Bronx father, Davidoff developed a bit of a chip on his shoulder. ecause Tom Hanks is both Hollywood’s last Everyman and its saint in chief, it takes a bona fide atrocity to kill him: AIDS, the Nazis, Jude Law. So maybe we’re overdue for a movie that sends him to perish offscreen in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Hanks, after all, was an anchor of the BY Tribute to Heroes telethon that aired a little less than SCOTT three weeks after the terrorWILSON ist attacks, the first actor to speak on camera that night. He helped us grieve. Why shouldn’t his presence be a signal that big-screen art can now officially emerge from the ashes?

So asks Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Warner Bros.’ big-budget, awards-baiting adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s grotesquely precious novel. The answer: No reason at all, except that this isn’t art. It’s two hours of gorgeously wrought grief porn, from the director of The Reader and The Hours. Could someone maybe put on a telethon to prevent Stephen Daldry from continuing to make movies?

His problem is one not of talent but of taste: The director has none. But Daldry’s movies are hardware magnets — Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet picked up Oscars on his watch — and that alone would keep a filmmaker of lesser skill on a studio payroll.

As in The Hours and The Reader, the actresses in this film carry the emotional burden. But Daldry’s fascination isn’t so much with strong, conflicted women as it is with what happens when a strong, conflicted woman must cope with a really annoying boy. smoldering stare, and has phone numbers for hookers pretty much on speed dial.

His extreme sexual appetite seems not to have affected his work or his social life when we meet him. But his X-rated (or, in this case, NC-17-rated) daily routine goes off the rails when his younger sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan), shows up and crashes at his place. A troubled woman with her own dysfunctional hang-ups, she starts complicating his life right away by having a one-night stand with his boss (James Badge Dale). But there’s another reason that Brandon doesn’t want his needy sis around. Her presence reminds him of the traumatic past that he’s been trying to, uh, ejaculate out of his system.

Manhattan has never sparkled more than it does here, but Shame presents the town as an all-that-glitters-ain’t-gold black hole. It’s a point that McQueen illustrates further by sending Brandon into a nightclub to catch Sissy per-

forming the anthem “New York, New York” as a slow, aching torch song. The rendition brings tears to both siblings’ eyes. Their city of dreams has failed to release them of the nightmare that has been their lives.

Rock bottom doesn’t turn out to be all that nightmarish, though. Brandon’s last-reel bender consists of a quick fix at a gay bar and an intense but unsatisfying three-way. The film hardly feels like an unshakable, engrossing study of a man’s crippling, pathological descent into hell. (Paul Schrader’s 2002 Bob Crane biopic, Auto Focus, gets a lot closer.) Fassbender gives it his suave all, playing a tortured soul dulling himself with sex, but McQueen (who previously directed Fassbender in the docudrama Hunger, his directorial debut) and his co-writer, Abi Morgan, don’t seem to know what makes a sex addict tick. The real shame in Shame is that it isn’t as shaming as it thinks it is.

New Authentic, Made from Scratch Mexican Cuisine

Ed Harris. Kate Winslet had (and had and had and had) the needy boy who would grow up to be haunted Ralph Fiennes. Here, Sandra Bullock (and, in a couple of scenes each, Viola Davis and Zoe Caldwell) is saddled with first-time actor Thomas Horn.

Horn, plucked from Jeopardy for his movie debut, has the unhappy task of playing Oskar Schell, Foer’s verbose 11-year-old protagonist and the orphan of St. Tom. His portrayal is effective, intense and true to the book — which is to say, he makes Oskar insufferable. The kid isn’t just needy but special needy. Oskar announces at one point that he was tested to find his place on the autism spectrum, but the results were inconclusive. There is a clinical term for Oskar’s condition, though: HFLF. He’s a highfunctioning little fucker.

If that sounds harsh, well, you haven’t endured scene after scene of Oskar forcing a frail old man (a silent, commanding Max von Sydow)

on a geocaching death march across New York’s five boroughs with blood-curdling outbursts and a cruel tambourine. You haven’t watched Oskar barge in on Davis — while she’s watching Jeffrey Wright leave her — and make her cry by talking about his dead dad. And you haven’t seen Oskar track down Wright and get him to open up about his own dead dad. At no time do any of these poor, otherwise sensible adults (or various others played, in shorter scenes, by less well-known actors) think to tape Oskar’s mouth shut, return him to Bullock, and start lobbying the government to lace school lunches with Adderall.

As each performer takes his or her turn patiently listening to Horn squawk his impossible lines and then giving him a short acting lesson, Daldry turns the emotional screws. Daldry’s movies also are showpieces for handsome technique, and cinematographer Chris Menges and editor Claire Simpson paint and cut these scenes with aching care, ensuring that no one will miss the capital-I importance of each utterance and every teary gaze.

Eric Roth’s adaptation (who else but Forrest Gump’s screenwriter?) irons out Foer’s tics and streamlines the plot, but it also makes Oskar a demanding little person rather than a rhetorical construct. A grade-school-age child who finds a key, thinks his doting father left it to him as one last puzzle to solve, and tries to meet every single person to whom the key might belong — the absurdity of that plot is meant to give Oskar lots of room to discover his own grief and the meaning of that emotion.

Seeing that grief provoked, smoking towers and all, and then enacted on-screen leaves room for nothing but a bare, misguided definition. One child can’t make sense of senselessness. This one does, though, by turning 9/11 into an opportunity for wide-eyed discovery.

If Tom Hanks were your dad, he wouldn’t let you watch this movie.

Let me just say right off that I don’t feel sorry for any dude whose dick I can see from the back.

In the opening minutes of director Steve McQueen’s new film, Shame, we see Michael Fassbender’s lead character get out of bed, walk naked around his swank yet minimalist New York apartment, and head into the bathroom for that all-important morning whiz. He’s shot from behind, but there it is, that impressive member, exerting a perfect stream between his legs, its owner unaware of the downfall that awaits.

Fassbender is Brandon, a dashing, charismatic urbanite who also happens to be a raving sex addict. Define raving, you ask? Brandon pleasures himself on virtually an hourly basis (yes, even at work), keeps stroke mags stashed around his apartment, seduces women with a pitch.com

he drink known as a Brass Monkey has several versions, the best-known being the combination of malt liquor and orange juice that inspired the 1986 Beastie Boys song of the same name. A more sophisticated (and potent) Brass BY Monkey cocktail is made CHARLES with gin, tequila, triple sec, orange juice, grapefruit juice F E R R U Z Z A and a splash of sweet-andsour mix.

So far, not one customer at the month-old they saw the building as an opportunity — not Brass Monkey restaurant, in Northmoor, Mis- a golden opportunity but maybe one of brass.

Hoover apologized for not having chopsticks. “They really don’t get chopsticks in Northmoor,” he said.

I admire Hoover’s brass: It takes a lot of guts to serve raw tuna and seafood crepes in a former dirty bookstore, now decorated with gold-sponged walls and framed monkey prints. If you like retro design, you’ll love being in the Brass Monkey: It looks like a restaurant and lounge from a 1980s Holiday Inn: faux elegant but with country station KFKF blasting over the sound system. It’s not for every taste, but it captures a certain John Waters quality that’s wonderfully tacky.

But tackiness, however wonderful, is the enemy of dishes like lobster-stuffed ravioli and praline-encrusted scallops, both on the Brass Monkey’s menu. But why would I do that to myself when I could have a hunk of beer-battered tilapia rolled in almonds and corn flakes and deep-fried? That dish turned out to be crunchy and tasty, though the dill tartar sauce, tinted a radioactive green, tasted not of dill but of sweet-pickle relish.

The throwbacks are what work at the Brass Monkey. The chicken Marsala, served over a hockey-puck-shaped mound of garlic mashed potatoes, is very good, as is the butterfl ied shrimp, rolled in coconut and deep-fried until the exterior is the right ratio of chewy to crunchy. Chef Elena Hoover impales the crispy crustaceans on wooden skewers, then pokes the skewers into half an orange for a festive visual presentation. In keeping with the citrus theme, the dipping sauce is made with orange marmalade. It’s a hell of a lot of sweet-

ness. Maybe a 40 of malt liquor would help.

The more creative the thinking behind a sandwich here, the less successful it is. An open-faced “Reuben” that was made with grilled salmon and a dollop of sorry-looking sauerkraut was, in a word, dreadful. But an uncomplicated croissant, filled with a great, fresh chicken salad and dotted with cherries, pecans and red onion, was terrific.

It’s hard to take all this in without shaking your head and asking: Why this location?

Why this menu?

On the matter of location, Hoover says he and Elena simply wanted a restaurant that they could manage on their own when it was busy, and close early if it was slow. As for the menu, the idea was to bring many of the popular dishes from their Florida restaurant to the chopstick-challenged Midwest.

That sounds pretty casual, but Ken and Elena Hoover aren’t monkeying around.

They’re determined to add something different — something tropical! — to an area where the closest thing to an upscale restaurant is probably the Journey Steakhouse, in the Argosy Casino.

The Brass Monkey is a daring gamble, then.

The brick building that houses the restaurant is a windowless box (no one wanted to be seen inside a peep house, after all), so nondescript that I passed it three times before spotting it. The Hoovers are going to have to work to get potential diners interested enough to, you know, peep in.

he northwest corner of 20th Street and Main emerged in 2011 as a sort of mini culinary epicenter of Kansas City. The Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange quickly came into its own as a smart destination for fresh, progressive plates. Down in the Rieger’s basement, the pseudo speakeasy and pioneering mixology BY lounge Manifesto reasserted D AV I D its reputation for shaking and stirring the tastiest cocktails H U D N A L L in town. And most weekend nights, the silver Port Fonda food truck could be found camped out in the parking lot, bumping hip-hop over its speakers and serving upscale Mexican street food to a tottering line of eager customers.

It’s easy to forget that the spot was more or less a dead zone for almost an entire year prior to this renaissance. Manifesto, which opened in 2009, was forced to close when 1924 Main, the restaurant upstairs that preceded the Rieger, abruptly shuttered in early 2010. (Their liquor licenses were connected.)

“When we went on hiatus in 2010, we tried to keep the Manifesto brand alive a little bit,” says Beau Williams, general manager at Manifesto. “[Owner] Ryan [Maybee] and I started this thing called the Traveling Cocktail Club, where we’d set up at different bars around town for a night. So we’d come and serve craftoriented cocktails at Pierpont’s or BRGR or Justus Drugstore. But then with the Rieger opening, and Manifesto opening back up, we kind of naturally stopped doing it.”

Bartender Dylan Sly arrived at Manifesto shortly after the reopening, following a stint mixing drinks at R Bar. Sly shares with Williams an earnest appreciation of the history, culture and science of cocktails, and had in mind a “sort of similar but sort of totally different idea” as the Traveling Cocktail Club.

“I’d wanted to start a cocktail catering company for a while, kind of a Manifesto-atyour-house type of thing,” Sly says. “The name ‘Traveling Cocktail Club’ was out there, and I thought it was a good fit, so I asked Beau and Ryan if I could use it, and they said sure. Then I realized I needed Beau and a few other people to help out with the business.”

— and have been gradually elevating the concept.

They’re available for parties, dinners, corporate events — any affair where the guests might be charmed by their miles-deep cocktail expertise.

“What we do all kind of depends on the size of the gathering and what the theme of the party is and what the organizers want from us,” Sly says. “In my mind, the ideal situation would be, we go into a house or party or space, and we have a scratch bar set up, so somebody can come up and order a Sazerac or a Ramos gin fizz, and we have everything on hand to make it. Or we can do a limited menu that lists the ingredients and features drinks we’ve invented.”

One hitch to the idea is the labor-intensive nature of crafting a first-class cocktail. At a place like Manifesto, patrons expect to wait a few minutes for their drinks — the vigorous glass shaking and careful garnishing are part of the draw. Would more traditional drinkers — the Scotch-loving lawyers, the vodka-true Mission Hills wives, the impatient livers of every social strata — give a damn about elderberry?

“To me, that’s a big part of this: getting these cocktails out there to people who might not come into contact with them otherwise,” Williams says. “I think there are people and organizations interested in hosting parties where the best cocktails you can get in this city are being served.”

“With larger parties, we’ll have to batch some of these drinks out beforehand,” Sly says. “In the end, the product will taste the same if it’s batched or not. But I really do think people are drawn to seeing the old-fashioned craft-cocktail experience: getting the jigger out, taking a mallet to a Lewis ice bag — the quaintness of it.”

It’s a quaint-friendly crowd that gathers at the City Arts Project building, at 21st Street and Campbell, on the Sunday evening before Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Recent Fat City profile subject Craig Howard, a cook at the Blue Bird Bistro who is set to open a membership farmers market at the site in the spring, had enlisted the Traveling Cocktail Club to conceive a drink menu for

pairing with the four courses of the intimate dinner he’s hosting in the main gallery space.

Campos and Richardson, outfitted in vests and ties, busy themselves behind a portable bar. Sly, not on the clock, slides into one of the three picnic tables that had been dragged into the space and spends a regrettable portion of his dinner cheerfully answering questions from the owner of the least-refined palate on The Pitch staff: “What’s Pisco?”

“What’s so great about Kold-Draft ice?”

“It’s really dense and dry, so it keeps the drink colder and it melts slower, which helps retain the flavor in the drink.”

“How did you guys get the snowflake on there?”

“We made a snowflake stencil that fits on top of the glasses, then we sprayed bitters on it.”

The wow response that the Snowflake (a frothy Williams creation made from Pisco, lemon juice, honey cinnamon syrup, egg white, and Angostura bitters) elicits is the real draw of something like the Traveling Cocktail Club.

It isn’t just that the drink is delicious, or that the attention to detail is remarkable. It’s that it greases the conversation at the tables. It gives people a shared reason to interact. Plenty of parties could use that kind of built-in backup.

“I could talk about cocktail culture all night,” Williams says. “To me, to me, it’s this holy American thing. … It’s not a fad.”

“What we’re doing is basically just riding the coattails of guys like Jerry Thomas, who pioneered these concoctions 200 years ago,” Sly says. “We’re just trying to be a part of that and present those great ideas and maybe add to them a little, and get people to try these delicious drinks. Or, you know, they can have a vodka tonic or a Scotch on the rocks. We do those, too.”

Family ’Tree DOOMTREE’S SECRETS TO A HAPPY COLLECTIVE

T

he fire and diversity that make hip-hop collectives compelling are also what can unravel them. Everybody’s got opinions — what hotel to book while on tour, where to go for coffee in the morning, how to execute a certain track. It’s challenging to harmoniously accommodate five or more personalities in any situation.

BY And when those personalities are MCs — not types who KYLE are hesitant to speak their EUSTICE minds — it’s no wonder that these collectives often evolve into solo ventures (Wu-Tang Clan) or outright breakups (A Tribe Called Quest).

Members of Doomtree, a Minneapolis crew boasting five MCs and two producers, insist that preserving their relationship as a family is first and foremost. They admit to having differences but believe that no issue could be big enough to drive a permanent wedge among P.O.S., Sims, Dessa, Mike Mictlan, Lazerbeak, Paper Tiger, and Cecil Otter.

“We typically don’t clash,” P.O.S. says.

“We’ve been brothers and sisters for 10 years now. We know how to deal with personalities, but we’re always family.”

This diplomatic chemistry is evident in a live setting. A Doomtree show is sometimes like an adrenaline-packed blow to the head and sometimes like a quiet lullaby. The range of emotion is part of what makes the collective special.

“Onstage, Doomtree is a cross between a revival meeting and an intramural hockey game. There is love, anger, laughter, abandon, release and a fair share of body checking,” Dessa jokes. “We’ve known each other and made music together for most of our adult lives, and the depth of those connections is clear. We script very little. There are more polished rap shows to be found, but there’s nobody with a more authentic, impassioned live performance.”

“I’m a fan of everyone in Doomtree, so for me, it’s like being able to back up some of your favorite artists,” Sims says. “There’s a general excitement in that. There’s an anticipation for what [someone’s] going to do next. Feeding off the energy everyone is bringing is an absolute thrill.” pitch.com

Archetype Is History

T

he release by Dekagon Records this week of Red Wedding marks the official end of an era for Archetype, the longtime Lawrence hip-hop pastiche pair. Producer Jeremy Nesbitt (aka Nezbeat) is building beats in San Francisco, and MC and lyricist Isaac Diehl (aka iD) has turned his attention to rock, playing bass and guitar.

Good for them, bummer for the rest of us. Red Wedding, with its dizzy samples, live instrumentation and thoughtful backpacker rhymes, is one of the most exciting hip-hop records to float out of the area in years. The Pitch recently checked in with Nesbitt and Diehl.

The Kills, with Jeff the Brotherhood and Hunters Still-around supermodel Kate Moss recently married Kills guitarist Jamie Hince, which gives a sense of the Kills’ current prestige across the pond. Over here in America, the other half of the Kills, vocalist Alison Mosshart, moonlights as the singer in the Jack White-led supergroup the Dead Weather. The Kills, we can then infer, is a “cool” band. It’s a loud band as well. Despite skeletal musical constraints — a guitar, a drum machine and a microphone — the group creates a massive, gut-punch sound that’s dirty, bluesy, dark and tense: rock and roll, baby.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo Best known for singing on Paul Simon’s landmark 1986 album, Graceland, vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo dates all the way back to Simon’s days rhymin’ with Garfunkel.

The South African male choral group, which recently celebrated its 50 years of existence, is in the midst of a North American tour stretching across 40 cities in support of its most recent a cappella album, Songs From a Zulu Farm.

We love and accept our son, and this news isn’t surprising, but we do have some concerns. He has already made the news public at school. We want BY to make sure he knows that we DAN love him and don’t care about his sexuality, but we want to S AVA G E prepare him to deal with those people who do. Also, any advice for when he starts dating would be appreciated.

Dad Seeks Support Dear DSS: “The importance of an accepting home cannot be overstated,” says Eliza Byard, executive director of GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, which works to create safe school environments for LGBT — and straight — youth.” (LGBT youth whose families are hostile are eight times likelier to commit suicide than their straight peers.)

“The bad news is that school can be a miserable place for LGBT youth,” Byard says. “The good news is that engaged parents can make a huge difference.”

You have to make your son understand that you care about him and that you’re aware of the challenges he faces.

“Learn more about his school and his experiences there since coming out,” Byard advises.

“What kind of response has he received? What supports are in place for him at school? Does the school have a Gay-Straight Alliance? Do students have access to LGBT-affirming resources in the library? Does the school have policies that address bullying? Are there adults in the school community whom he trusts and feels are supportive?”

Call your son’s school and set up a meeting.

Making sure his teachers and school administrators know that you’re on your son’s side — and that you intend to hold them accountable — can go a long way toward creating a safe environment for your son at school.

“Visible signs of support, such as a GLSEN Safe Space sticker on a door,” Byard advises, “can fundamentally alter the school experience of an LGBT youth by helping them identify those adults in the community who are supportive.”

As for dating and sex …

“Make sure he has access to all the health and safety information he needs,” Byard says. “Make yourself available to talk whenever he needs and welcome his boyfriends inside the house the same way you would if they were girlfriends.”

It sounds like she has a bad case of You’re Doing It Wrong, which is a social-skills disorder that members of the BDSM community are at particular risk of acquiring. BDSMers with YDIW feel that they have a right to inform other BDSMers that they’re doing it wrong — whatever it might be.

BDSM players should speak up, of course, when they witness other BDSMers doing something dangerously wrong, such as dangerous or nonconsensual play at public parties. The goals of creating a BDSM community were the sharing of skills, the promotion of good play practices, and the holding of dangerous or malicious players to account. (The primary goal? Getting BDSMers laid.) But some BDSMers confuse that responsibility for an invitation to critique other people’s kinks, sexual interests, preferred fetish roles, safe words, etc.

YDIW in BDSMers can be treated and cured through the application of “No one gives a fuck what you think, asshole.” It should be applied liberally whenever YDIW flares up.
