KC skateboard pro Sean Malto prepares to defend his Street League title at the Sprint Center.

A

few weeks ago, security guards handcuffed Sean Malto for doing his job in the wrong place. He and his friends were detained for skateboarding in the street. They were a couple of blocks from the pro skateboarder’s River Market loft.

“It was so weird,” Malto says. “It was like a sting operation.”

The 22-year-old pro skateboarder from Kansas City says a truckful of security guards — two in the cab and four in the bed — raced around a nearby corner. The guards jumped out of the still-moving truck and took off running.

“I thought somebody had robbed somebody,” Malto says. “And then the next thing you know, they tackle my friend J-Lo [Joseph Lopez].”

Malto says another friend also got tackled and pinned to the concrete. The guards who cuffed Malto and his crew claimed that they had received a complaint about the skaters destroyG O L property.

P E R MO INE AT ing “We’re having fun ONL M / P L O G with our friends on the P IT C H .C O street,” Malto says. “We’re not breaking into anything or doing drugs. But whatever — that’s just how it goes sometimes, I guess.”

Kansas City police officers responded, but whoever lodged the complaint didn’t step forward. Eventually, the cops let them go.

“The problem is, people still have that image of skaters as assholes or something,” Malto says. “We try to be as respectful as possible, but it doesn’t register, and people freak out.”

Skateboarding might be the only sport whose athletes — even the ones about to headline an arena event — run the risk of being detained by security. “You don’t see Dwayne Bowe getting cuffed for playing football,” Malto says. “That’s ridiculous.”

Malto is the hometown favorite heading into this weekend’s Street League DC Pro Tour, a two-day competition that kicks off at the Sprint Center Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m. (ESPN2 broadcasts the final round Saturday night.)

Malto won last year’s Street League championship, claiming a $200,000 prize. He wasn’t even supposed to be in the championship round after an injury-plagued season, but a late scratch made way for Malto.

Street League is just the beginning of a busy weekend for the young pro. After Friday night’s prelims, he heads to the Uptown Theater (3700 Broadway) for the premiere of Escapist Skateboarding’s “Red and Yellow” at 10 p.m. The video spotlights some of Kansas City’s best skaters, on a weekend when the biggest names in the skateboarding industry are in KC.

Malto: The champ comes home.

“It’s going to be good for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons,” Malto says. “They get to see that Escapist is doing a lot of good things locally for skating and ... the guys who run companies are going to see local talent and see what we have going on down here. And hopefully, a couple of these guys can go on a trip and get on with skate companies.”

Malto has trips of his own all summer. After Street League’s KC date, he’s finishing up a two-year skate-video project in Europe while touring the United States with the league.

Malto is also weighing an entry in this year’s X Games.

“If it works out, I’ll be there,” he says. “X Games are like a bonus. Street Leagues are

the priority. Those are the best contests in the history of skating.”

The usually unflappable Malto calls Street League’s Kansas City stop “kind of scary.”

“It probably is the most [high-]pressure contest,” he says. “Not because I won last year but because it’s in my hometown. I feel more pressure from that than anything else. You just got to relax and feel comfortable on your skateboard and just let it happen. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. If it does, cool.”

Last year, everything worked for Malto in the championship round. And he rewarded himself with a new BMW 535i.

“That’s probably the biggest purchase,” he says. “Other than that, it’s [the money’s] just been hanging out in the bank.”

Malto didn’t change his car brand, but his shoes are different. After his deal with Etnies expired, he signed with Nike. (He also has signed a deal with Skullcandy.) On an early May afternoon, he’s wearing a pair of blackand-gold SB Zoom Stefan Janoski shoes.

“I loved Etnies. I loved everything they’ve done,” he says. “Nike is Nike. They’ve been held at such a high level for so many years that when I got the offer, it was like, ‘Definitely.’

Nike — how can you say no to that?”

Only four skateboarders have signature Nike shoes. Malto wants to be the fifth. His first big gig for the shoe giant: a trip with other Nike athletes to China for the Festival of Sports in August.

“Hopefully Kevin Durant comes,” he says.

(Durant, like original Nike king Michael Jordan, has his own line.) “He’s my favorite player. He may be my favorite athlete. He’s just cool on and off the court. He’s super humble. He’s one of the best, and Oklahoma City is our closest basketball city, so I support them.”

As busy as Malto is, he plans to find time for one indulgence.

“I want to make it to OKC for a playoff game, too,” he says. “My prediction ever since the start of the season was OKC was going to beat the [Miami] Heat in Game 7. That’s what I want to happen, and I want to be there.

“If it happens, I’m definitely going to try every single angle [to get tickets],” he adds.

“Or just bite the bullet and pay.”

HEAD GAMES Killing a few brain cells with Kansas City’s NFL concussion expert

P

aul Anderson’s beer should be a celebratory one. The University of Missouri-Kansas City law student just took his last final. But rather than imbibing out of elation, Anderson occupies a booth inside a muggy, mostly deserted bar on a recent afternoon and talks about the death of his childhood hero, NFL linebacker Junior Seau. The 12-time Pro Bowler committed suicide the day before — May 2. He was the second retired NFL player in two and a half weeks to kill himself.

“It’s tough,” Anderson says. “If I could pick one guy who really stuck out the most and had the biggest impression on me, it was Junior Seau. I always wore his jersey: No. 55. I felt so tough because his name was ‘Say-ow!’ What cooler name could you have?”

Seau’s suicide was particularly disturbing: The 43-year-old former San Diego Chargers star shot himself in the chest, the same way former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson ended his life in 2011. Duerson, 50, used that method so his brain could be studied for damage. It was later confirmed that Duerson suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a brain disease that results from enduring concussions and repeated head traumas. Seau didn’t leave a note explaining why he shot himself in the chest, but his family is considering donating his brain to science.

Between telling stories, Anderson, 25, sips an IPA and checks his phone roughly every 20 seconds for Twitter updates. Seau’s death carries extra meaning for him. Since January, Anderson has been writing the blog NFLConcussionLitigation.com, which tracks concussion-related lawsuits against the NFL. His project, which he initially started to get the attention of potential employers, has become the comprehensive online resource about the 74 lawsuits filed by former players.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the day Seau died, Anderson’s website received its most traffic — around 4,000 hits.

NFLConcussionLitigation.com is a treasure trove for reporters, lawyers, former players and anyone else interested in the lawsuits. Anderson maintains spreadsheets that organize and list the approximately 2,146 plaintiffs by the lawsuits they are named in, and he has collected court documents and filings from the cases and the league’s responses.

“My last semester, I didn’t really care about law school,” he says, noting that he graduated summa cum laude. “I figured that this was more important.”

His fastidiousness is getting the blog noticed by marquee names in the national sports media. Mike Florio, a lawyer and football expert on NBC’s Pro Football Talk website, has quoted and linked to the site. Slate’s sports podcast, Hang Up and Listen, also touted Anderson’s work on a recent show. USA Today and The Dallas Morning News have both directed readers to Anderson’s site in the last three weeks. Now, he says, he’s getting requests to write guest posts on websites and do interviews on talk shows.

Anderson still wants to be an attorney; he plans to take the bar exam this summer. He’s just hoping that sports-oriented law firms will notice him and offer jobs.

Despite his ascension in the ranks of nationwide concussion-litigation experts, Anderson says he wasn’t trying to become a professional blogger.

“My purpose is to get my name out there, break into the industry,” he says. “Hopefully, this is an investment.”

His desire to work as a sports attorney or an attorney for a league is why he attempts to write without bias. (He does admit to writing a post about a new lawsuit because the firm filing it cut him a check.)

Anderson says it’s dangerous to put the blame for long-term head trauma entirely on the NFL. At this point, he argues, current football players know what they’re getting into.

“At the end of the day, the responsibility — a lot of it — does lie on the player,” he says.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t sympathetic to retired players. Halfway through his second beer, he tells a story that illustrates just how awful things can be for the players he writes about. Following an April conference in Las Vegas for a faction of retired players trying to shake benefits out of the NFL and NFL Players Association — he describes it as a “bitchfest” — he spent several hours at the airport with a retired former Pro Bowl player. He won’t name the player because the Pro Bowler is not involved in any lawsuits, but the player is considering joining one. The former star was a mess.

“We spent four hours hanging out before we caught flights. I just felt like I was his mom,” Anderson says. “He was super nice, but he would just leave stuff. He would lose stuff. It was an eye-opening experience for me.”

The player kept asking where his ticket was and had to claim a misplaced briefcase at the airport’s lost and found, Anderson recalls. “I was just like, this is scary, man,” he says. The player didn’t know about chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Even though it’s an affront to his libertarian political beliefs, Anderson says players’ mental health should be cared for after they retire.

“If you put in some time, I think you’re entitled to lifetime neurological benefits,” he says. “And it’s only going to benefit everybody because the NFL doesn’t want to continue to be stained by these suicides.”

Anderson kills his beer and leaves the dimly lighted bar for the startling clarity of the steamy, sun-drenched street. His phone buzzes, again commanding his attention.

“Cool,” he says, reading the message. “I’m going to do a radio interview this weekend.”

century ago, a cultural shift came to Kansas City: Housewives stopped baking bread.

It had always been a time-consuming, burdensome task, made miserable during the hot summers. Now, as KC flourished, there were more than 100 neighborhood bakeries — not to mention independent grocery stores and delicatessens — selling fine loaves of white, rye, pumpernickel, wheat and challah. Starting in the 1920s, Westport’s Manor Bakery (the forerunner of today’s financially troubled Interstate Bakeries) began home delivery of freshly baked bread. The ease and economy of commercially manufactured bread easily

trumped the time and effort required to make it at home.

The KC icon Roma Bakery opened in 1923, started by Sicilian-born Joseph Filardo; his cousin, Joseph Cusamano; and his brotherin-law, Jack Binaggia. It’s still an integral part of the local bread market, though the family-owned business was sold to Omahabased Rotella’s Italian Bakery nearly two decades ago. The heirs of the founders, John Filardo and Michael Quarrato, continue to oversee the Kansas City distribution arm of the commercial baking company, delivering breads like the ciabattini rolls created for Jasper’s Restaurant.

And while some restaurants (Café Italia in Parkville, for example) do their own baking, many purchase artisanal breads from local bakers. Lidia’s Kansas City bakes its focaccia in-house, but the other breads in its popular basket come from Farm to Market. You may not see patrons carrying paper-wrapped loaves of Le Monde Bakery’s baguettes through the streets of North Kansas City, but that shop’s loaves are visible in local restaurants and at Johnson County’s Dean & Deluca market.

Meanwhile, decades of grocery-store habits have given way to increased demand for artisan bread at home. After all, if you’re going to eat carbs, make it count with a buttered slice

of baguette or focaccia made this morning instead of a spongy slice of Wonder Bread.

Not that there’s anything wrong with the cheap, soft white bread favored at most of KC’s barbecue joints. Comedian Bill Cosby taught us that “an American can eat anything on the face of this Earth as long as he has two pieces of bread,” and that’s still true. But we’ve come far enough to understand that there’s nothing better than smoked beef brisket on, say, Farm to Market sourdough. So here’s a snapshot of the metro’s hottest bread ovens right now, a week’s worth of a food we’d never try to do without. continued on page 10

ohn Friend stands in the center of the cavernous space at 100 East 20th Street, pointing to the cinderblock walls that will hold ovens and equipment for Farm to Market, possibly as early as July. The bakery’s owner, Mark Friend, is moving the business from Waldo to the Crossroads, a milestone to complement the company’s 20th anniversary next year. The 18,000-square-foot warehouse, which last housed the Prime Rib Grill by Hereford House, is undergoing a $500,000 makeover. (It's tentatively scheduled to open this July.)

“You really can’t back up in our current space without hitting something,” Mark says. “This gives us the space to focus on each individual bread.”

Farm to Market launched in 1993, when Mark Friend and Fred Spompinato started the company with $20,000 (including $5,000 of their own money) — enough to buy an oven and a mixer. They worked in the kitchen of the Classic Cup and made deliveries from the back of a Mazda station wagon. Farm to Market’s early successes — Grains Galore and sourdough — remain the bakery’s top-selling loaves.

The business outgrew the Cup after two years and relocated to its current bakery and office space in Waldo, where John, Mark’s son, began working as a baker after high school. It was then that Kansas City discovered the bakery’s ciabatta, which has an airy and open crumb, in grocery-store aisles. The company also installed J. Llopis hearth ovens, imported from Spain, in three area supermarkets.

After graduating from the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State, John, 26, returned last summer to begin working full time at the bakery. He now manages the day-to-day operations, leaving Mark, 57, time to experiment on potential new products, such as a gluten-free bread.

“I’ve always been touched by John’s interest,” Mark says.

“I couldn’t imagine anybody running this company but me,” John says. “It’s always been a part of my life.”

In the past four years, the bakery’s food-service business has begun to eclipse its grocery accounts, with Farm to Market now being served at more than 100 restaurants. In 2011, the Waldo bakery produced 4,118,786 rolls, buns and loaves.

As Farm to Market prepares to move downtown, John envisions the awning he wants to hang over the Walnut Street entrance. “It will say, ‘Kansas City Born, Kansas City Bread.’ I think there’s still a lot of people that don’t realize we’re local and we’ve never wanted to be anywhere else.”

he wet plop of dough on a wooden prep table keeps time with the soft whir of an oscillating fan, filling in the silence between two men who are kneading and folding loaf after loaf at Fervere. It’s Wednesday night at the West Side bakery, and owner Fred Spompinato’s short-sleeved plaid shirt is slowly darkening with sweat as he and baker Chad Russell move the dough from table to oven.

“Feel is what it takes years and years of experience to get,” says Spompinato, 58. “The dough is different every night, so you have to know right where you want to be just by touch.”

He has spent 24 years discovering that touch. A day after graduating from the American Institute of Baking, in 1987, he started working at the Monterey Baking Co., which brought San Francisco-style sourdough bread to the Kansas City area (as the brand Pacific Baking Co.). There, he befriended a fellow baker, Mark Friend, and the two left to form Farm to Market Bread Co. in 1993.

“We did a focus group and found that bread was intensely personal,” Spompinato says. “The only thing that everyone could agree on was that they loved bread hot out of the oven.”

Friend wanted to expand; Spompinato didn’t. He sold his share of the business in 2000 and used the proceeds to open Fervere.

“I knew that I only wanted to bake three days a week. If it was just going to be me, three days and 50 hours would be all I could handle by myself,” Spompinato says.

The focal point of the bakery is the heat-retaining hearth oven, with its cathedral top — bricks arranged into a curved peak. Originally heated with oak, it’s now powered by an electric burner. As the night goes on, Russell pulls out loaves of ciabatta, cheese slippers, and orchard bread (made with raisins, apricots, apples and walnuts), letting a little heat escape from the oven each time it’s opened.

“Bakeries grow out of hand, and you lose focus once your customers dictate who they want you to be,” Spompinato says. “This oven ensures that’s not going to happen.”

At his busiest, he can produce 475 loaves by hand in a night — a far cry from the 50,000 pounds that the Pacific Baking Co. would produce in a day. He looks up from shaping the polenta bread, which is covered with a ShamWow to help moisten the surface and allow sesame seeds to stick to the crust.

“We live in the subtleties of life, not in the extremes,” Spompinato says. “This job is nothing like any of the bakeries I’ve ever been at, and that was the goal.”

Just after 10 p.m., the first of the night’s retail customers appears, eager to pick up bread that’s just out of the oven.

ith his tousled hair and his tattoo sleeve, Chris Glenn could be the frontman for a rock band. It was only five years ago that he was reviewing music for The Pitch.

But when Glenn begins to speak in the dining room of vegan delivery service Conveniently Natural (where he’s currently renting kitchen space), it’s clear that the hands behind the eight-month-old New Traditionalist bakery have found a new muse.

“The best thing about bread is making bread,” he says. “There is no other food that is so transformative, that can go from a pile of dust to a loaf of bread.”

Just two years ago, Glenn was a talented but raw baker experimenting on the woodburning oven in Café Europa. Between making pizza dough and batards, Glenn began working on an organic sourdough loaf to sell on Friday nights at the BadSeed Farmers Market.

“Once I could look people in the eye and ask them to give me money for what I was making, I knew I was ready,” Glenn says.

So was the Crossroads. Glenn went from selling 30 to selling 60 loaves every night, but the real value might have come from what became a de facto food-business incubator: the back corner of 1909 McGee, where employees of Soda Vie, Oddly Correct and Green Dirt Farm would talk about how to cultivate a following. For Glenn, that meant letting his fig bread and black-pepper-and-parmesan bruschetta do the talking.

“There’s just so much of him in his bread,” says his wife, Cara, who tags and wraps finished loaves and often demos or delivers them alongside Glenn. “That’s what people are tasting.”

He left Café Europa in September 2011 — they still buy his bread — and opened New Traditionalist. Over the past eight months, he has added the Farmhouse, the Better Cheddar, and Nature’s Own Health Market to his client list. And he’s back at the BadSeed Farmers Market on Friday nights, testing out new ideas, like his raisin and fennel loaf.

“Kansas City has a chance to have a reputation as a bread-baking town like San Francisco or New York in proportion to our size,” Glenn says. “And the coolest idea for me is that I can be part of that community.”

ike a jewelry shop displaying its prized gems in glass cases, the nine-month-old Bonito Michoacan puts metal trays of its Mexican breads behind glass doors, the better to view them in their yeasty glory. The exhibition includes the horn-shaped cuernos, the sugar-glazed pan dulce, the sugar-mottled conchas, the crusty French rolls called bolillos, and the saucer-sized and flour-dusted telera.

Although this sleek, shiny panaderia is best-known for its layer cakes and French-inspired pastries, the selection of breads, both plain and sweet, has become a signature of this busy venue. It’s open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, making it a place of pilgrimage on Sundays, when most other bakeries are closed.

Several of Bonito Michoacan’s employees don’t speak English, but the bread here knows no language barrier. Just point at the bakery cases and you’ll be handed a round metal tray and a pair of tongs. Load up the tray with whatever catches your eye (don’t forget a couple of triangles of the tawny cheesecake known as pay de queso), which is likely to include several bolillos. Take one home and split it, toast it in the oven and slather it with butter. Add a steaming cup of cappuccino, and you have one of the most satisfying simple breakfasts any culture offers.

he biggest difference between the way Jef Dover’s Le Monde bakes today and the loaves the bakery made when he started the place back in 2001? Dover has discovered that less is more.

“When we first opened,” he says, “we offered French baguette, focaccia, challah, rye, marble rye, whole wheat and cranberry rye.

But we got so busy just making baguettes — we do as many as 800 loaves a day — that we didn’t have the ability to do a volume of other breads. So today we only bake the baguette, focaccia and challah.”

That’s plenty to keep him occupied. Le Monde’s ovens are in operation seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Breads aren’t a huge component of the bakery’s retail operation, in downtown North Kansas City (“We might sell three or four dozen [loaves] a day,” Dover says), where the glass display cases are loaded with beautifully glazed pastries and flaky croissants, but they’re the bread and butter of the bottom line. Dover’s biggest bread clients are Dean & DeLuca, several local country clubs and a dozen restaurants.

He and his bakers start kneading loaves between 10 and 11 p.m. and usually work through the night until 3 p.m. the following day.

Dover didn’t set out to become an artisan boulanger de pain.

“I’m a hack,” he says with a laugh. “I wish I could say I attended the Cordon Bleu school, but I started out as a crew leader at McDonald’s.”

A fascination with the art of bread making inspired Dover to practice until he developed the perfect baguette. “The secret is using good flour, a long, slow rise time and steam so that you have a crispy crust on the outside and a yeasty loaf inside.”

The thing about bread is that the cost of ingredients doesn’t have to be expensive. But the labor costs — for really exceptional bread, anyway — can be very high. “You can’t underestimate the importance of a person who really knows how to bake bread,” continued on page 12 Dover says.

Two things happened five years ago that inspired Katie Olson to become a baker: She was diagnosed with celiac disease, and her infant son, Brody, was diagnosed with autism. Olson decided that a major dietary change was necessary for everyone in the family, and she began baking — breads, cakes, cookies, muffins — when she didn’t like the gluten-free options available in local stores.

Suddenly the former dog groomer was a vegan-baking goddess. “I never had any intention of making baking into a business,” she says. “I became a baker out of necessity. I was never really into baking, not even as a child. I never even had an Easy-Bake oven.”

But while baking things for her own use, Olson discovered there was a need for products that could be eaten by those with allergies to wheat, soy, eggs, corn, potatoes, dairy and rice. “I have clients who have allergies to some or all of those ingredients.”

The business (named for her son) soon got bigger than she expected. “A few years ago, I had HyVee as a client and had products in 21 of their stores. But it was bigger than I could handle,” Olson says.

“I’m the only baker. So I decided to focus on special orders and my Internet business. I ship all over the country and will deliver local orders for a fee. I’d like to set up a retail operation someday, but it’s cost-prohibitive right now.” (For now, there’s brodysbakery.com.)

Olson added bread — banana bread, lemon-banana bread, cornbread and a white sandwich loaf — after her first year in business. “I was experimenting a lot. I didn’t want to add another bad glutenfree bread to the market.

“I’m pretty picky about glutenfree bread, and some of them out there are either too dense or they crumble like sawdust,” she continues. “And they’re expensive!

So I worked a long time on that recipe. Mine holds up well and can be used for grilled sandwiches or French toast, if people want that.

I’ve gotten good reviews from parents.”

At Westport’s new Bread for All Tandoori Naan Café, the master baker is Kurdistan native Foad Salih, who begins baking the circles of yeasty dough each day at 10 a.m.

“The oven gets up to about 400 degrees,” says owner Stan Yoder. “Foad keeps a very close eye on each piece, because if it’s in the oven slightly more than a minute, it will burn.”

cauliflower, beef kebabs — but does a brisk retail business for patrons who simply want to take home packages of bread.

“It freezes very well,” Yoder says, “so many of our customers buy several bags at once. We have one customer who uses it to make homemade pizza.”

Before the café opened in April, Yoder was operating the storefront at 536 Westport Road as a bakery, with Salih each day preparing dozens of packages of the bread, which Yoder and his son Joel delivered to local Middle Eastern grocers.

Since April, however, the Yoders are no longer able to supply the small grocery stores. “We can barely keep up with the demand of the restaurant and our own retail customers,” Yoder says. “At some point, we’ll need to hire an additional baker to keep up with our demand.”

The 17-year-old downtown bakery and café, at Ninth Street and Vermont, offers different

specialty breads each day of the week (bagels are Sunday’s featured choice), in addition to the standard best-selling loaves. Among the latter are a country French loaf made with organic, unbleached flour; a rectangular ciabatta baked with extra virgin olive oil; and a whole-wheat bread made with heirloom “Turkey” wheat (a hard red winter variety grown in Decatur County, Kansas, and milled at the Heartland Mill in Marienthal).

Mike Humphrey has been one of the four staff bakers at WheatFields for more than a decade.

“I’ve been in food service all my life, but when I started at WheatFields, I knew I wanted to be a baker,” he says. “It’s one of the most rewarding professions that I can think of.”

Humphrey trained under founding baker Thom Leonard. It’s that hands-on experience, he says, that separates a great loaf of bread from one that’s merely good. “The secret to a perfect loaf of bread,” Humphrey says, “is time, temperature and a baker with real experience.”

It also helps to have a first-class wood-burning oven. WheatFields owns a 25-ton, Spanishmade J. Llopis, one of eight in the United States. “It’s really quite amazing,” Humphrey says. “It has a rotating hearthstone, which creates a beautiful crust and crumb.”

Last October and November, the musicians, sound engineer, animation designer and astronomer who make up Dark Matter took their Rocket Grant and launched two high-altitude balloon-camera systems that recorded images of KC and the state of Missouri. What came back forms the basis of their presentation, Ascent, an audiovisual journey from 95,000 feet in the air, set to an original music score performed live as the pictures are projected onto the 60-foot screen of the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium at Union Station (30 West Pershing Road, 816-460-2020). Local karaoke king Brodie Rush, whose Brodioke has been a nightlife staple for the past decade, is taking a break from the bar scene. “It’s been a good run, but having a kid marks a new chapter of my life,” Rush tells The Pitch. “Being bar-free is the change that my family and I need now.”

Brodioke lives on with guest hosts three nights a week (the Drop on Tuesdays, Beer Kitchen on Wednesdays and Bulldog on Thursdays). But Rush isn’t totally bowing out; he’s keeping the Monday gig at Nara (1617 Main, 816-221-6272). “Catching me at a Brodioke gig will be an exciting event,” he says, “not an opportunity to watch a guy wasting away and phoning in the night.”

New Bob Marley doc plunges

s documentaries on the late reggae revolutionary Bob Marley go (and I’ve seen a couple), Marley is defi nitely the most comprehensive — almost exhaustingly so.

Running at two hours and 24 minutes, the movie leaves no turn unstoned (sorry, but I didn’t start it — the fi lm fi rst hit theaters on April 20, get it?) as it examines Robert Nesta Marley’s journey. I pity the easily distracted stoner who comes in expecting a breezy refresher course on the reggae giant’s life, only to get this heavy-duty seminar.

Director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) includes interviews with all the right people: family, friends, collaborators, business associates, nearly everyone who was ever in Marley’s band. They collectively tell how Marley, son of a black mother and a white father, began his music career by joining with fellow future reggae icons Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer to form the Wailers.

Once Tosh and Wailer left the band, frontman Marley brought in background singers the I-Three (which included his wife and “guardian angel,” Rita). The result was reggae music inspired by his Rastafari way of life, yet influenced by the vital R&B that was beaming from the States.

In audio interviews excerpted here, Marley claims to have no ambitions. But the documentary makes it clear that, throughout his

rise as a performer, he wanted to amass a global following, leaving no one out, especially the black audience. At the height of his fame, when he was selling out venues full

urning flesh, a severed head, a rain of feces — there’s no horror movie like a Sacha Baron Cohen horror movie. (The naked wrestling match in Borat is to hotel rooms what The Blair Witch Project is to basements and Psycho is to showers.) No other screen presence of recent vintage matches Cohen’s understanding that shame, terror and comedy all work the same side of the gut. Certain freaky-scary things cause the helpless laughter, which comes with the gratitude that we aren’t watching ourselves. (On the bent plane of the Cohen universe, a place recognizable to any 13-year-old boy, those things include body hair, semen and the vagina — especially the vagina.)

Tickling an uneasy zeitgeist’s quivering underbelly is a core function of comedy, and Cohen’s latest farce, The Dictator, does that — but only just. Varying his angle of attack (if not his targets) by a few degrees, Cohen has made Admiral General Aladeen — the despot who rules fictional Middle Eastern oil power Wadiya — another oaf turned loose in America, where he spends about 75 minutes revealing our everyday hypocrisies, cultural and political. This time, though, everyone is in on the script, and the central character is supposed to take some of the pounding.

Every target here is obvious, though, and that obviousness becomes its own not very

But his status as both artist and activist also made Marley a target. As political groups began warring in the streets of Jamaica, the singer planned a free concert to ease tension. For his trouble, he was assaulted by unknown gunmen, though he miraculously walked away with minor wounds.

And all this is just the fi rst 90 minutes of Marley’s story, before we get to his selfimposed exile in England, his support of Africans who were struggling with apartheid, and the tragically shortened later years of his superstardom.

Macdonald, who stepped in after previously attached directors Martin Scorsese and Jonathan Demme bowed out, makes his movie as visually appealing as it is thorough.

(He peppers the first half with breathtaking aerial shots of Jamaica at its greenest.) And Marley revels in portraying its subject as an influential, groundbreaking artist whose influence only proliferated after his death.

He was the type of musician who continued to perform for thousands even after a venue was hit with tear gas. Macdonald’s movie cele brates a buffalo soldier who fought all the way to the end.

satisfying joke. It’s not the misfi re endured by anyone who saw Brüno, but — this long after Borat — the strain of coaxing shocked guffaws out of an already-primed audience is showing.

Teamed again with Borat and Brüno director Larry Charles, Cohen (co-writing with

overreach through the same meat grinder.

Under the pratfall thuds and tabla tattoos of the purposely generic Middle Eastern music, there’s not a lot to hear — the best lines are throwaways, the satisfactions mostly tonal and visual. But Cohen is an exuberant performer whose motion and voice mean more than what he’s yelling or yelping from scene to scene. (Anna Faris works hard as Cohen’s love interest, in on the joke that a movie about a fascist leader shouldn’t have a love interest and also in on that joke being impossibly but good-naturedly dumb.)

Sophistication isn’t the point, though. By design, this is a crude IED, not a nuke — closer to the Farrelly brothers than to Chaplin. Still, there’s something Groucho in Cohen’s swarthy joie de stooge, an echo here of that funniest of xenophobe-baiting funnies, Duck Soup.

There’s a fine, knowing moment when someone confides to Aladeen’s right-hand man that every celebrity — Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton, maybe even George Clooney — is up for a little self-debasement if the price is right. The right-hand man is played by Ben Kingsley, whose choices have amply demonstrated that very principle. It’s just a trace of meta, but it’s a satisfyingly radioactive one, the kind of gag that makes you hope there’s a Duck Soup lurking in Cohen, maybe apart from his familiar collaborators.

ntil recently, my favorite after-11 p.m. dining experience involved sitting at the counter at Town Topic and trying to decide among the patty melt, the fries and the chocolate cream pie. My second-favorite after-11 p.m. dining experience: ordering all three. But I’m going to have to put that feast in a new category: after 3 a.m. There’s a new No. 1 at 11 p.m., and I found it in a cozy Chinese restaurant in Overland Park.

The ABC Café — open until midnight six days a week — isn’t just a rare late-night Chinese restaurant. It’s also one of the most authentic Cantonese venues in the metro.

Like any good last-call destination, it’s a good place to eat alone (or with companions who have limited attention spans). The five or six tables E MOR on the western side of the dining room are outfitted with a wall-mounted T A E IN ONL .COM video monitor tuned to a H C IT P California-based Chinese station that plays (at an inaudible volume level) teen-oriented musiccompetition shows, news programs and a lot of car commercials. I asked my server one evening if the featured program I was staring at was an Asian-American version of American Idol. Without missing a beat, she looked at the screen, shrugged and said, “I don’t think it’s that good.” Then she left a ceramic pot of hot tea on the table and left me to stare at the color photographs of the dim sum specials inside an illustrated, spiral-bound menu.

No one else in the dining room (which, it must be said, is charmlessly lighted) was looking at the TV screens just then. The larger parties were engaged in lively conversation, sharing specialties from small plates on the big Lazy Susans on their tables. The smaller two-tops were occupied by young, attractive couples. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house. Fair enough — this was before 8 p.m.

A few nights later, I went back with my friend Martha. We arrived at 11:30 p.m. and found the restaurant just as full as it had been during prime time. There was an Entouragestyle group of 20-something ChineseAmerican hipsters, tattooed and dazzlingly handsome, who got up from their table every 10 minutes or so to pace through the parking lot, puffing on Marlboros and talking into cell phones.

“It’s very Hong Kong,” said the well-traveled Martha, observing the scene as she expertly wielded a set of black chopsticks and plucked up delicate, paper-thin slices of translucent amber beef tendon. I used a fork, stabbing the bits of chilled tendon with increasing delight as I found that the rubbery-looking connective tissue wasn’t chewy at all but supple. Each bite added to the dish’s slowly accumulating fire.

Martha toured through China for a job and was game to sample all kinds of the more un-

usual delicacies on ABC Café’s menu, including Shrimp rolls with cream cheese have spin. the steamed chicken feet, braised in a spicy, soy-based sauce. I found that it was something sauce. We watched different, perhaps more intriguing, dishes stream out of the kitchen, of a job eating the modestly meaty feet — too but my friends didn’t do tofu, let alone deepmuch exertion for too little pleasure. One pair fried intestines. of the cocky claws was enough for me.

hris Seferyn believes that you really need only three things to succeed in the restaurant business: sausages, beer and fries. That’s the premise behind Haus (3044 Gillham Road, hauskc.com), the restaurateur’s gastropub and biergarten, which opened May 11 in Martini Corner.

“We’re going to do three things really well: wurst, bier, fritten. This is going to be a gastropub — a drinking place that just happens to focus on some kind of food,” Seferyn says.

The sausages come from chef Alex Pope’s butcher shop, Local Pig. The fries are handcut, and the beer list (half of which resides on the bar’s 20 taps) is predominantly Belgian, German and Austrian. Haus is open 3 p.m.–1:30 a.m. Monday–Friday and 11 a.m.–1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Seferyn’s place is one of several new eating and drinking spots entering the marketplace in recent days. And even more are coming as summer gets under way. Here is what has popped up on Fat City’s radar.

Affäre (1911 Main, affarekc.com) is a little bit German and a little bit rock and roll. Chef Martin Heuser’s new Crossroads restaurant opened earlier this month with a collection of small E R O M plates, including lumpcrab salad, roasted-redpepper roulade, and T A E IN ONL .COM bison short ribs with H C PIT seared foie gras. Affäre is open 11:15 a.m.–10 p.m.

The taps are flowing again in the former Jack Gage American Tavern space, where The Beacon: a Kansas City Tavern (5031 Main, beacontavern.com) has debuted. The neighborhood bar and grill boasts hand-cut sweet-potato fries and a turbo-charged BLT with sugar-cured bacon, avocado and truffle mayonnaise. It’s open 11 a.m.–1 a.m. Monday– Saturday and 10 a.m.–10 p.m. Sunday.

It’s vegan Thanksgiving every day now that a local licensed outpost of the famed San Francisco eatery Café Gratitude has opened in the Crossroads (333 Southwest Boulevard, cafegratitudekc.com). The menu is all about organic, raw and vegan food.

Haus: the sausage king of Martini Corner puts the Colorado-based grocery chain in the old Borders space, where it offers reasonably priced organic produce and grass-fed beef. The Vitamin Cottage part: aisles of supplements, along with a roster of nutrition classes. The supermarket is open 8:56 a.m.–8:04 p.m. Monday–Saturday and 9:56 a.m.–6:06 p.m. Sunday.

The second location of the Wornall Road beer-and-burger destination Swagger has opened in Martin City, at 13401 Holmes (swaggerkc.com). There’s still the Dead Texan — a bacon cheeseburger goosed with a fried egg, and two grilled-cheese sandwiches where the buns would normally be — but the new spot comes with an oversized bar and more than 70 beers on tap. It’s open 11 a.m.– 1:30 a.m. Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–1:30 a.m.

Concept One , a pop-up restaurant at Studio Dan Meiners (2500 West Pennway), is now taking reservations (at conceptonekc .com) for its June 18–21 run. What to expect: a $60 three-course, farm-to-table meal cooked by chefs Jeff Lefko and Elise Landry, two recent Broadmoor Technical Center graduates.

Sugo’s Spaghetteria opens later this month (13386 Metcalf, Overland Park, sugoscucina.com). The St. Louis export from Michael Del Pietro uses only fresh pasta and has a rotating cast of four entrée specials, including a risotto of the day.

Wing Busters & More, expected to open June 1 (1128 Oak, wingbusterskc.com), cooks up wings and things. The original location, in Grandview, has more than 30 flavors of sauce and boneless and bone-in wings.

Also on the way is Barbosa’s Express (1124 Oak), a satellite of the St. Joseph institution, which is set to bring KC its Mexican fare in July.

Datura Records celebrates

his year marks the 10th anniversary of Datura Records, the label that Lawrence rapper Sean Hunt, also known as Approach, runs with his sister, Rolanda Suter. But Hunt, who was raised in Overland Park, has been active in KC and Lawrence for longer than a decade: rapping, producing, collaborating, even composing film scores. In 2007, he moved to San Francisco, where he worked, networked, made some music — and then returned to Kansas.

“I’d work 60 hours a week just to make rent,” he says, sitting outside in Lawrence on a recent muggy afternoon. “But I got to meet and work with the people I wanted to, and now I can work with them from here. … Innovative music is something the Midwest has always been good at. There are a lot of origins of funk in Ohio, and then jazz. I like the word groovy: The grooviest stuff can come out of the places you’d least expect.”

In recent years, Hunt and Suter have cultivated an impressive, tightknit hip-hop collective around Datura, known as Datgang. It includes Soul Servers members Deuce Fontaine, Smoov Confusion and Louiz Rip, as well as Royce Diamond, MilkDrop and Atilla.

As Hunt explains it, Datgang came together organically. Royce Diamond gave Approach some beats to rap over that were so dense, they “required some outside help” to do them justice. Hunt is soon releasing I Heard Some Things, a collaboration with DJ G Train on which a swath of Hunt’s guest verses from other albums will be mixed onto one comprehensive tape.

No sense in waiting until the landslide of material is released, however. This Friday, May 18, Hunt has put together a varied showcase at the Bottleneck featuring not only the entire Datgang crew but other local hip-hop luminaries: Miles Bonny, Deep Thinkers, iD (in a rare performance), Bear Club and Winners Circle, among many others.

“To put someone like iD on the bill with Winners Circle, who are more conscious, will surprise people,” Hunt says. “You can expect to see some interesting surprises.

I just think it’s important for artists to be around other artists.”

All in the family: Datgang members often perform together or support each other at shows, the group rarely works in the studio. “We all have our own studios,” Hunt says. “In Kansas City, there are three [studios] in Kansas and three in Missouri and then me in Lawrence.”

That helps explain how one label is putting out nine albums this year. That’s one album per artist, plus one group album. Hunt’s project, which he has been working on for the last couple of years and plans to release this fall, is a concept album called Makeout With Violence. Royce Diamond’s album, Mirrors and Smoke, was released March 17.

t some point last fall, the art punks started playing shows at a place called FOKL. Apart from being an extremely fun word to say, FOKL turned out to be a new art space, located right off the 12th Street Bridge, on Central Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. In November, FOKL hit its stride when a large crowd turned up for the first anniversary celebration of local vintage-clothes enterprise We Are Tribe. Since then, the space has earnestly hosted yoga nights, clothes swaps, and an art show for students of Wyandotte High School.

FOKL is operated jointly by Craig DeMoss, Rachel Helling, Leslie Kinsman, Allie Mason and Martin Swank — in their spare time — and this weekend, it continued on page 28

Fool’s Gold

When Fool’s Gold surfaced in 2009, the L.A. act included a dozen rotating members and delivered its lyrics primarily in Hebrew. On its sophomore album, 2011’s Leave No Trace, the ranks have been reduced to a core of five members, and English is now the preferred language. The band has retained the Afrobeat influences of its debut, but the songwriters (of which Foreign Born guitarist Lewis Pesacov is one) also seem to be on a bit of a Smiths kick. Recommended listening, if you like: “The Boy in the Bubble,” Dirty Projectors or The Queen Is Dead. And if you don’t like those things, what kind of person are you?

A background character in early ’00s Southern rap (he was in 504 Boyz), Curren$y bounced from the No Limit crew to Cash Money before deciding to self-release his material. His subsequent mixtapes, on which he fi xated his smooth-jazz drawl on little other than marijuana-related topics, won him some blog love and new momentum, which brought him back to a major label. Warner Bros. has given him his own imprint, which he calls Jet Life, but the drama continues: He is currently suing Damon Dash for selling his last album, The Muscle Car Chronicles, without permission.

One of the better local songs I’ve heard this spring is “Liars,” a Caves track that appeared on the Record Store Day vinyl comp by Record Machine-Golden Sound. One of the better local albums I’ve heard this spring is Vast As Sky, from recently resurrected Lawrence alt-country act the Roseline. And one of my favorite local venues to hear my favorite local bands is the Brick, so I’m pretty well set for this show.

This mellow Friday night on the prairie is headlined by St. Louis’ Beth Bombara, whose charming version of Americana calls to mind another Beth: Orton. David Burchfield, a local who writes tender alt-country songs garnished with steel guitars and fiddles, ought to nicely complement Bombara’s pastoral vibe. More modern and urban is opener Margo May, a singer-songwriter whose electric-tinged songs have as much to do with saccharine indie rock as they do folk music.

Mariachi El Bronx, with Two Gallants and Making Movies

These days, audiences are far less likely to have heard of angry L.A. punk act the Bronx than its alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx. What started as a borderline novelty diversion into Mexican mariachi music — the band dresses in charro suits and performs with acoustic guitars and a robust horn section — evolved into critical praise and a slot opening for the Foo Fighters. What’s the secret? Smart arrangements, high energy and a lack of irony. Two Gallants, a Saddle Creek duo, also operate at a vague intersection between traditional folk and punk.

Anybody else seeing Murphy Brown-era Candice Bergen when they look at David Lee Roth’s face these days? OK, OK, never mind, that was a cheap shot. Diamond Dave, of course, has been on the brain lately on account of the recent release of A Different Kind of Truth, the first Van Halen record to feature DLR’s pipes since 1984’s, uh, 1984. To support the album (which includes five reworked songs originally written in 1976, plus eight new ones) and their respective retirement plans, Van Halen is touring steadily through August.
