An honest debate about the streetcar gets drowned out by annoying peripheral issues.

ansas City, Missouri, leaders must feel like they can’t win for losing.

When city leaders try to move a big-dollar idea along, they get accused of cramming pet projects down everyone’s throat. When they launch an “outreach” effort to talk to more people about those ideas, they get slapped with an ethics complaint.

Last week, Citizens for Responsible Government (CFRG) sent a letter to the Missouri Ethics Commission complaining that City Hall was steering money through contractors in an attempt to sway voters. The contract in question was part of a larger $4.3 million award to Burns & McDonnell to do pre- engineering work on the streetcarexpansion proposal.

To those suspicious of City Hall’s motives, the deal smelled like city leaders getting ahead of themselves to please one of Kansas City’s biggest businesses.

Those concerns were stoked by a $685,000 subcontract by Burns & McDonnell to Parson & Associates to knock on doors to gather feedback about the project.

Parson & Associates also does PR work for the downtown streetcar project. Presumably, the firm would like to get paid for that work and to keep getting paid. Those chances increase the farther the proposed streetcar line extends through the city.

For city insiders, the arrangement looked like municipal business as usual — and not in a bad way. Parson & Associates is a minority-led business, which satisfies city laws for minority- or women-owned companies participating in municipal contracts. For a city often criticized for its lack of planning, why not plan ahead? Why not get out into communities affected by the project to get a sense of how its residents feel? And why call it electioneering when the outreach process hasn’t even started?

Mayor Sly Ja mes la mented CFRG’s ankle-biting, saying that outreach was a requirement of the National Environmental Policy Act. This is where the city gets itself in the cross hairs of groups like CFRG. Voters haven’t passed the streetcar expansion, which means the city hasn’t applied for the 50-percent federal-funding match that it needs to collect local taxes to fund the project. Therefore, the NEPA requirement doesn’t yet apply.

Federal regulators also don’t care what type of outreach cities do before they apply for federal funding. As far as the Federal Transit Administration is concerned, City Hall can knock on all the doors it wants. But once the application process for federal funding starts, the city must do some sort of outreach.

These types of community-engagement projects aren’t rare. Jackson County officials held town-hall-style meetings in anticipation of their as-of-yet-unrealized commuter-rail program. Doors got knocked on ahead of the construction of U.S. Highway 71.

It’s not a mystery where City Hall stands on the streetcar; staffers and council members aren’t disinterested, neutral observers. It’s a city-led project — and, perhaps, more than any other since the Power & Light District, it has been a mayoral crusade.

Last week’s dustup is endemic of the discussion surrounding the streetcar, one dominated by reactionaries on both sides who drown out any attempt at honest debate.

CFRG is aligned with Friends of KCI. Both groups oppose Kansas City’s forays into big-ticket items, citing other basic needs being ignored. It’s a reasonable position, but it often amounts to loud voices without sensible alternatives to City Hall’s attempts to forge progress on issues like public transportation.

On the other side are people like Russ Johnson, a sitting council member who is defining his time in office by pushing the

streetcar and airport projects. Publicly, he doesn’t help either cause with his level of discourse. Johnson sees any streetcar dialogue that isn’t 100-percent aligned with his views as an attack on his mandate as the chairman of the city’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Johnson has spent time rooting through journalists’ Twitter feeds, including mine, and has leveled absurd accusations of bias against journalists who follow opponents of his projects on the social-media platform.

Johnson also hasn’t fared well in public appearances when quizzed about the streetcar’s merits. He struggles to hide his disgust toward any commentary that doesn’t square with his beliefs.

There are other reasonable, measured viewpoints on the streetcar, and there’s plenty of room to have a sensible discussion. But they get drowned out by the louder voices on both sides.

The August election, the fi rst of two to approve or reject the streetcar expansion, can’t come soon enough.

ansas City icons (Marilyn Maye, Valomilk candy, Arthur Bryant’s) are forever being discovered and rediscovered by observers outside our metro.

Mostly, even the click-baitiest of such notices are good for us — those outsiders stoke the reputations of people and products that many of us take for granted.

A few weeks ago, for instance, the Daily Meal website posted a list that claimed to compile “The 101 Best Burgers in America,” citing Winstead’s and Town Topic as KC’s representatives. Two fi ne joints, to be sure, with a combined hamburger history of 111 years.

But really, is what comes off the grill at Winstead’s or Town Topic a legitimate contender for a national database of awesome burgers? Ask a local and you’ll get a fast answer: most days, no.

I know, I know: It’s sacrilege to speak of Kansas City’s most famous hamburger — the Winstead’s steakburger — in anything but worshipful tones. Yes, it’s a hallowed product, little-changed from what Nellie and Kathryn Winstead started offering 74 years ago. But to most outsiders (you know, people who weren’t born in Kansas City — people like me), a Winstead’s burger, with its rumpled buns and thin, greasy patties, is no longer all that distinct from, say, a Steak ’n Shake single. In fact, that’s about the nicest thing I’m willing to say about the “steakburgers” at Winstead’s now.

What I will say is that some burgers in the metro are good enough for the national spotlight. Or, anyway, a very bright regional spotlight. And over the next few months, I’m going to tell you about as many of them as I can eat, starting with the ones on this list. They share a simple commonality: affordability.

For less than $10 (sometimes way less) at one of these places, you can get a burger that would make even famous Winstead’s booster Calvin Trillin defect.

The food truck next to the Local Pig butcher shop in this historic East Side neighborhood serves a variety of meaty sandwiches — the daily specials might feature a lamb gyro or a meatloaf patty melt — during the day, but there’s always a terrific burger on the menu: a juicy 6-ounce patty (ground Angus beef from Seneca, Kansas), masterfully grilled and topped, if desired, with an array of cheese options. (I’m partial to the housesmoked provolone.) The buns are Farm to Market.

Humdinger Drive-In 2504 East Ninth Street, 816-231-0888 Triple cheeseburger, $5.49 On Kansas City’s East Side, there’s a burger shack dating back to 1961 that clearly deserves some kind of culinarylandmark status. But the Humdinger doesn’t get that kind of institutional respect because the surrounding urban neighborhood — with its vacant lots and crumbling sidewalks — has become so depressing. The place proudly carries on anyway, serving the most eclectic menu of any fast-food joint in town: tenderloins and tacos, gizzards and Italian steaks, fried okra and cherry malts — and possibly the most life-affirming triple cheeseburger in town. It’s thick and greasy and utterly redemptive.

Sheridan’s Unforked 7337 West 119th Street, Overland Park, 913-661-9887 Pure (single with cheese), $4.60

Local restaurateur Jim Sheridan is still better-known for his frozen custard than for his sit-down food, but his prototype fast-casual venue cooks some terrific burgers, including the signature Pure, made with NatureSource beef (raised without growth hormones or antibiotics) and dressed up with tomato, fresh greens and the optional — and free — slice of American cheese. It may be the metro’s most quietly healthy hamburger, and it’s delicious.

Christy’s is a proud relic of 1960s auto culture, when customers loved eating in the privacy of their own cars. Nothing has really changed over the four decades that the place has been open, though the menu has grown more international (tacos, burritos, egg rolls). The juicy, smoky, thick burgers remain superb, and they’re not much more expensive today than they were when Richard Nixon was in the White House. They come dressed for that era, too: mustard, ketchup, pickle, onion. Judging by a glance down at the parking-lot pavement, though, those fresh onion slices get about as much respect as Nixon did after Watergate.

HiBoy Drive-In 924 West U.S. Highway 24, Independence, 816-252-4050 Quarter-pound HiBoy, $4.95 There are three HiBoys in the metro, all locally owned. The original location, at 3424 South Blue Ridge Cutoff, is operated by one owner, with a different operator running the two Independence burger venues. That includes the tidy brick building on 24 Highway, a favorite since 1957. The burgers here are like what you’d make at home if you had time: ridiculously thick, with firm buns and tasty pickles. But there’s no reproducing the HiBoy sauce at home. Don’t ask. It’s a secret.

Green Room Burgers & Beer 4010 Pennsylvania, 816-216-7682 Cheesy Brownfield, $6.50 (includes choice of cole slaw, fruit or cottage cheese) Bonus: A burger and a half-order of fries go for $6 from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This two-year-old burger venue, in the basement of the Westport Coffee House, puts out a smart selection of custom burgers, with the signature being its Brownfield: pickles, red onion, ketchup and mustard (and, on request, seasonal greens and tomato). The house cheeseburger, the Cheesy Brownfield, gets topped with a slice of that good old American fromage or — for two bits more — Tillamook cheddar, Irish cheddar, goat, swiss or feta. The buns, either a fluffy yeast bun or pumpernickel — pumpernickel! — come from Roma Bakery. It might be the only joint in town where you can eat a burger while playing a board game with strangers.

Bleu Burger 320 Southwest Blue Parkway, Lee’s Summit, 816-347-9393 Stuffed All-American, $7.50 (includes fries or sweet-potato tots) Bonus: All burgers are half-price from 4 to 10 p.m. Mondays.

Tony Olson decided that “stuffed” was the next big thing in the burger business, and so he has made this spacious venue, the former Bullfrog bar, into a family-friendly sandwich emporium. The man is not kidding about this whole stuffed thing, either. The burgers are as thick as Stephen King novels, and sometimes just as scary. The fat patties are almost always cooked medium-well, the better to seal in a center that has been augmented with various combinations of cheese, condiments and vegetables. The most basic of the eight choices is the All-American, which has our national shiny orange cheese both in the middle of the patty and on top of it. Pretentious? You bet. Also: pleasing, with a populist price.

Hobo’s Grill & Bar 1036 North Agnes, 816-241-4626 Double cheeseburger, $6.50 A newer addition to the East Side saloon scene, Hobo’s is, literally, on the other side of the tracks. Owners Bob Morris and Dave Hugo have cleaned up their old roadhouse (formerly the River’s Edge) and now serve a damn good menu. Go for the towering double burger, expertly grilled and made with McGonigle’s ground beef. You get your choice of cheese, with lettuce, tomato and mayo an additional dime apiece. Obviously, it comes in a plastic basket, with potato chips. Splurge for the fries, though, for $1.50 more.

Walsh’s Corner Cocktails 304 West 85th Street, 816-361-7099 Cheeseburger (includes choice of fries, chips, cole slaw or cottage cheese), $6.75 Bonus: Wednesday is Burger Night, when all burgers are $1.50 off from 6 to 11 p.m.

This dimly lighted, congenial neighborhood saloon has been serving booze and burgers since 1978. The burgers are discounted on Wednesdays but taste just as good the other six days of the week: always 6 ounces and always cooked well-done (as the menu declares). It’s far from fancy but totally satisfying. And an extra 75 cents buys you onion rings instead of fries. Spend the money you save on some extra rounds, because the room can feel like a real-life Cheers.

The perennial winner of local “Best Burger” competitions, the Flea is a polarizing choice: People either love the food and the ambience at this oddball combination of low-rent saloon and vaguely sordid flea market or complain that it’s too loud and inconsistent. There are eccentricities — it’s still cash-only, and the service is notoriously inattentive — but the hamburgers really are very good. The ground chuck is from McGonigle’s, and the kitchen grills it perfectly. The place has a decent beer selection, and there’s air hockey. What more do you need?

I’ll cop to being a bit of a grump about geeksversus-jocks tropes. The culture offers only so many ways to celebrate the necessarily limited “computer nerd wins hot cheerleader by not being rape-y cretin” story. Lysistrata Jones, now playing at Egads Theatre, doesn’t necessarily shake those narrative templates, and its modern take on the ancient Greek source material rings a bit hollow. A sex strike to end a bloody war is one thing, but to win a college basketball game? Yet the musical is also one of the most infectious, unapologetically fun productions I’ve seen this season.

The musical’s book, by Douglas Carter Beane (of To Wong Foo fame), adds some surprisingly fresh jokes and glimmers of self-awareness to a familiar story line. The basketball team at Athens University hasn’t won a game in 33 years, and cheerleader Lysistrata Jones — girlfriend of the team captain, Mick — is totally tired of spurring on the losing team. She corrals her pompom entourage and proposes a pact: no more sex until their boyfriends start scoring on the court.

Lysistrata turns out to be a more dedicated and intelligent leader than her gratuitous Valley Girl dialect suggests. Mandy Morris pictures and to make the most of multiple playing areas. is almost exhausting to watch in the title Bold technical elements add to the prorole, so committed is she to her character’s crusade. Her comedic timing and wide-eyed duction’s style: Alex Perry’s contemporary facial expressions are spot-on, and when she lights give texture and a youthful palette to the stage, and Morgan Myers’ costumes aid flashes a rare dark look or a sudden shift into characterization by combining off-the-rack a serious register, she disarms us. In her reading, there’s more to “Lyssie J” than perk and pieces in clever ways.

I’ve complained before about the crackling sound system at Off Center, but I’m going to keep harping on it as long as it keeps marring good work. Spotty feedback noises suck the life out of some exceptional performances here. What should be a tender ballad — Mick’s “When She Smiles” — was DOA the night I saw the show, thanks to constant audio interruptions and mics cutting out. (P.T. Mahoney, an absolute pro, kept his cool.)

And I’ll put my money where my mouth is: If someone fires up a Kickstarter campaign to fix the issue, I’ll be the first to contribute.

Egads’ actors and designers are too good to be undercut by equipment issues.

Lysistrata Jones’ pop power should make it a summer hit, despite a target demographic that I can’t quite place. The sunny story line and smartphone-speak seem meant to appeal to younger viewers, but some of the language (and lingerie prancing) may give parents pause. Either way, the musical will be heaven for the toe-tapping show-choir set, and the script comes packed with enough referential jabs and genuine laughs to charm the sarcastic and the sedentary alike.

ike many artists, painter Michael Young has moved through several periods: dark, semiabstract, aliens. Now, though, he can be said to have begun a new one: the sold-out period. Collectors are buying works by the Kansas City, Kansas, native as fast as he can produce them — sometimes sight unseen.

Todd Weiner, in whose gallery Young opened his latest show, Inner Outer Limits, on June 5, says he has sold more of Young’s paintings than any of his other artists’ works. (There’s apparently a fellow in Ecuador who’s way into Young.)

The appeal is obvious enough. Part Hieronymus Bosch, part Mad magazine, his busy, colorful images dare you to spot every odd, unnerving, witty detail. His use of perspective and scale gives the pieces assembled at Todd Weiner Gallery a tinge of the surreal, visible most strikingly in “Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead,” which re-imagines a Wizard of Oz tableau as a place somewhere over a dystopian rainbow. But Young’s style also shows, in its fluidity and smoothness, the influences of Art Deco and regionalism.

Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” subjects even appear in one of his works.

Young’s earlier phases showcase those influences, tracing his journey from commercial

art (which he studied in Salina as a young man) to architectural illustration (his first KC gig) to his 1978 arrival in New York, where he learned to render human anatomy with mentor Bill Weltman and studied at the Art Students League. It has been a journey there and back, with other stops along the way, but his art has matured into something fantastical and fervid, while Young has learned to think less.

“In the last five years or so, I’m more just having at it,” he says. “I’ll know the biggest pattern and then just work it out as I go. It’s more fun but frustrating, too.”

During a visit to his studio, Young answered The Pitch’s questions about what’s fun and what’s frustrating.

The Pitch: How would you describe your work?

Young: I would describe it as stylized realism. Black comedy.

So not surrealism?

Or stylized surrealism. That way, I’m not trying to make things look like it’s actually a photograph, where some people do. It still looks like a painting.

Where do your ideas come from?

My mom claims I got the literal side from her. It was always easy to come up with ideas, since I was real young. I’ve worked with people before who would say, “I have no idea what to paint. I want to paint, but I don’t know what to paint,” and I feel so sorry for them.

Life’s not fair in that regard. It’s just strange.

I’m glad I got the literal side.

A lot of your paintings include landscapes or some sort of architectural space. How did your background as an architectural illustrator affect how you conceptualize space?

It teaches you — forces you in your head — to understand light, shade, shadow and backlighting, so you can just draw whatever and know how to do it in your head instead of taking a picture or using a model. It’s internal now. And it helped me understand how perspective works. You can have the rising line in the picture, out of the picture, down there, out there. It helped me with trees and foliage, scale. You can see that my work now is a little looser. In the earlier years, I can show you things that were so, so tight. But I gradually, gradually changed over the years.

“Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead” reminds me of Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights” because you have so many elements, and you can tell that each one has its own individual story that’s being lived out within the painting. It’s not of a moment but more of a scene. Is Bosch an influence?

Yeah, when you look at his pictures, everyone has their own little thing. I love his work.

But for years, I was inspired by the regionalists: Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton and Dale Nichols and those people. There are different surrealists I really enjoy — René Magritte.

You’ve also done a book of surreal houses, Houses on Parade. What’s behind that?

Young in his KCK studio We had a house fire at our Merriam house — it wiped it out pretty bad. So we were staying in a little apartment house, and one day, I was going, “House fire, fire house, firehouse.”

OK, we got firehouse. “Icehouse, row house” — look at how many. So that’s what started it — I came up with about 90 paintings. It’s a guessing book, so if you can’t guess the picture, you can go to the “house key” in the front, and it tells you the title.

You’ve explored a style you call “prismatism.” What is that, and are you still engaging with it?

I need to get back to that. It’s harder. It takes longer. It’s really very simple in a way, but when you look at it, it kind of messes with your mind. It’s basically two colors creating a third color. If you have an intersection, and one color’s yellow and one’s red, you’ll have orange in the middle. You’re painting what’s behind it. You have to know what’s on that other side and almost think 3-D in your head.

Way back, Charles Sheeler, one of the American regionalists, kind of experimented a little with it. I took off on that to make it go even further. Around 2000, I was just playing around with it — how far can I take this?

I thought about it, and I just wanted to try to see if it worked for me. The challenging part is still making it look rendered — light change, shadow and backlighting, combining those with the overlapping technique.

Does prismatism sell?

I’ve sold a lot of them. The gentleman in Ecuador prefers these.

ummer is for cold beer — cold beer in sweaty cans, gripped in koozies. So I called Matt Gardner, general manager at Kansas City’s Flying Saucer, and asked him to take me beer shopping for a Fourth of July backyard barbecue.

My only request: Keep it craft. Forgo the Bud and the Miller and the Coors Light Summer Brew.

That’s no special challenge for Gardner, who has managed a list of more than 240 beers, reflecting some 100 brewing styles, since the KC Flying Saucer opened, in May 2008. He’s a hometown guy, growing up in Topeka before attending college at Baylor, and he hooked on at the Houston Flying Saucer before transferring to Charlotte, North Carolina, for three years and finally returning home.

Gardner meets me on a hot Thursday morning at the Prairie Village Rimann Liquors. He hops out of his car and picks up a baby carrier from his backseat. His 3-month-old daughter, Elena, is sleeping. The three of us head into the store.

This time of year, Gardner says, he respects the can. “It makes sense to me,” he tells me.

“They leave a smaller footprint, and they’re easy to dispose of. You don’t have to worry about broken bottles.”

As we browse the store, Gardner’s first tip is to go for variety: “I want to get two to three different styles.”

He’s an IPA fan, and he’s quick to point out the red, blue and silver cans of Oskar Blues’ Dale’s Pale Ale. The Longmont, Colorado,

brewery was the first craft-beer maker to can its brews, and it started distributing in Kansas only this past March. (Its beer isn’t yet available in Missouri.)

“I think it’s a good, approachable, American pale ale,” he says.

I grab a six-pack.

Gardner also raves about Deschutes’ Freshly Squeezed IPA. “It’s fantastic,” he says.

“Bright, citrusy, tropical fruit. Beautiful, beautiful IPA. That’s one of the best IPAs that you can find out on the market right now.”

I pull a sixer from a cooler — bottles, this time.

We decide to cross the state line to see what the Show-Me State has that Kansas doesn’t.

“I like living so close to State Line Road,” Gardner says. “You have the ability to cross State Line and find all of the different beers easily. One of my favorite breweries is [Michigan brewer] Bell’s, and you can’t get it in Kansas.

I always like to have some Two Hearted Ale on hand, and I have to go to Missouri to get it.

Luckily, it’s not that far.”

At Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits, we face a long cooler of craft beers. Gardner picks out a fourpack of Stiegl Radler. The bright orange-andwhite tallboy cans (16.9 ounces, 2.5 percent alcohol by volume) hold an elixir that’s perhaps more grapefruity than it is beery. Gardner says the low ABV and the citrusy flavor make it a great summer beer.

I also pick up Nebraska Brewing Co.’s EOS Hefeweizen, which I already know as one of my favorite wheat beers.

“They do a lot of good stuff,” Gardner says.

“We sell quite a bit of it.”

The neon-green cans of Ska’s Mexican Logger (5.2 percent ABV, 16 IBUs) call out to Gardner.

“That’s cool because it’s a light-bodied, very effervescent beer,” he says. “It’s very approachable for people who may not like craft beer. It’s just a fun beer.”

Gardner puts the Ska in our basket and adds a couple more beers to the mix: Founders’ Rübaeus, a raspberry ale that he says is more approachable for beer nondrinkers, and Perennial’s Tart Hopfentea, a Berliner Weisse brewed with a tropical-tea blend by the St. Louis small-batch brewery.

“It’s extremely fruity, raspberry, that’s something really refreshing,” Gardner says of Rübaeus. “It’s more thirst-quenching.”

As for Hopfentea: “It’s really beautiful, citrusy, lightly tart beer. Everything they do is out-of-this-world.”

The key is mixing up the styles, he adds. “I want to get a variety of styles, so people aren’t forced to drink one specific beer, whether it be an IPA or a pale lager, or whatever.”

As Gardner drives us back to our meeting spot, he admits that his own parties tend to end up full of wine drinkers.

“Generally, we have a lot of friends who drink wine, so there’s a lot of wine as well,” he says. At this, Elena wakes up and lets out a cry.

“I always make sure that there’s beer there, too,” he says.

Ophelia’s Bobby Stearns helps

T

he secret to that perfect burger: The sucker has to be bad for you. We’re talking a greasy, messy tower of meat. The kind of thing for which you must unhinge your jaw. This was lesson No. 1 when Ophelia’s executive chef Bobby Stearns agreed to help me build the kind of mind-blowing meaty masterpiece that makes everyone at a cookout fall silent after the first bite.

Within two minutes of meeting Stearns at McGonigle’s Market, I was standing with him in front of the meat counter, gazing at mounds of ground chuck. At more than 6 feet tall and wearing his uniform from his lunch shift, Stearns looked like a man who knew what he wanted.

“I’m not terribly health-conscious,” he said, and ordered a pound of 80-percent-lean ground chuck. “It’s fattier, so it tastes better.”

“That’s cool,” I said, curbing my dressingon-the-side impulses. Today I’d decided to go all out and eat whatever Stearns told me to eat. “Let’s do it.”

Stearns noted my enthusiasm and ordered two Sheboygan bratwursts. This wasn’t because of indecision; the plan was to grill the brats, slice them lengthwise and “butterfly them out” on top of the burgers.

Stearns’ cooking instructions for the burgers themselves surprised me. Instead of throwing them on the grill alongside the brats, he recommended cooking them on the stovetop with a bit of vegetable oil over high heat.

Those much-lauded black grill lines? Not all they’re cracked up to be.

“It’s a matter of preference, but I think

they take away from the flavor of the meat,” Stearns said. Also stealing the meat’s spotlight: excessive seasoning. When you’ve got good-quality beef, you don’t need fancy meat rubs or award-winning sauces to make your burger sing. Stearns uses sea salt and pepper.

With the most important part out of the way, Stearns moved on to the cheese, selecting a block of muenster from the cooler. The cheese matters; rubbery Kraft Singles simply will not suffice. Stearns said sometimes he’ll go to Better Cheddar to find the right cheese, with gouda another of his favorites.

Next we needed to give our burger some pizzazz, so we drove to a Price Chopper to shop for toppings. I tend to get lost in the grocery store.

Even when I make a list, I somehow find myself in the cookie aisle contemplating the structural integrity of double-decker Oreos, so it was a good thing I had Stearns to keep me on track.

He knew what he wanted: a yellow onion, and red and yellow bell peppers. (They taste the same, he said, while the flavor of green bells is totally different.) I was to julienne the veggies and cook them with butter over low heat until they started to caramelize.

“You can leave them for, like, 45 minutes and just forget about them,” Stearns said. “But make sure it’s real butter.”

The veggies would go on top of the burgerbrat one-two punch, and that would be topped with the muenster and chilled kosher dill pickles. “Some people like to add lettuce or a tomato,” Stearns said, “but I usually don’t.”

That was fine with me; we weren’t making a fucking salad here.

At this point, the only thing missing was bread to hold all of this deliciousness in place.

Much like cheese, good buns are important.

Stearns prefers them fresh from the bakery, so he selected a bag of store-prepared brioche rolls. For a simple sauce to spread on the bun, Stearns said to mix equal parts ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise — “the real stuff,” he said, no Miracle Whip allowed — with a few squirts of Sriracha.

“That’s perfect,” I said, delightedly throwing a plus-sized bottle of rust-colored rooster sauce in our basket. “Isn’t food just a Sriracha delivery system?”

While we were waiting in the checkout line, I asked Stearns about sides. I shouldn’t have been surprised that his first suggestion was “a whole lot of stuff that’s bad for you.”

He loves macaroni and cheese, as well as baked beans with a bit of grùyere thrown in.

He enjoys putting surprising twists on traditional dishes, such as using jicama instead of cabbage for slaw and adding edamame to pasta salad.

Stearns and I parted ways in the parking lot, and I headed home to cook. An hour later, I had an amazing, greasy beast of a burger that lit up all of my brain’s pleasure centers. I didn’t even bother to post it on Instagram.

When I finished, I fell into a luxurious three-hour meat coma. What can I say — sometimes it’s good to be bad.

Summer SoundS jangly shimmy that allows for dancing even as it encourages you to wreck the room.

The various interstitial bits of studio banter (“Mark E. Smith can suck my crotch”) give the album an element of fun. The Kids Have No Taste is harmonious, despite its attempts to convince you otherwise. Even the weird and off-kilter “Hippie Drug” is catchy, and the dance-floor grinder “Sweet Ass Dank” that closes out the record soothes all the way into its inevitable disintegration.

A few local releases rounded up tal bridge in “The Tijuana Upholstery Job” sings like a mariachi band, and the swing of “Fried Chicken for Breakfast” sounds like something ZZ Top would broadcast from a border radio station. The inclusion of “The Queen of Rosedale,” which was on Federation’s debut album a full seven years ago, seems a little crazy, though. Why rerecord something old when you’re putting out so few songs, right? But the interplay between the soaring soul of Monique Danielle and frontman Gregg Todt — in addition to some royally beefed-up guitars — makes this track Hermanos de Sangre’s centerpiece.

Burial Teens Fascist Chrome (self-released) If you had to name a band that typifies the underbelly of Kansas City rock-centric music today, you may as well say it’s Burial Teens. Unapologetic and intentionally contrary, the band — guitarist and lead singer Nathan Loud, drummer Dan Ohm, bassist Carrie Thomas — began under this name just a few months ago and was obviously fated to implode. And so it has: Scarcely three months since the release of Burial Teens’ debut, Fascist Chrome, the group has split.

But Chrome is a fantastic parting shot.

The record injects nine tracks of dense, freak noise into the ear wound you’re left with. The music is devoid of sheen and pop hooks, but Burial Teens’ dissonant energy is nonetheless infectious. It’s damn near impossible to tell what Loud is singing about through the petulant whine of his voice and his scuzzy guitar work, and with song titles like “Mutilate It,” “I Believe in Demons” and “Sex With the Bisquick,” you’re probably better off not knowing. But the true beauty of this group lies in the irritable rhythm section, the messy wail of Loud’s malcontented singing (if you can call it that) and the sweat you can feel through your speakers.

all Blood The Kids Have No Taste (self-released) Calculated in its use of lo-fi recording techniques, the first release from the full-band All Blood expands on the work that Jonathan Brokaw has been recording as a solo project for the past few years. The quartet mines a sonic territory familiar to fans of Goner or Slovenly Recordings — angular, but with a 24

Brooke Tuley First Midnight (self-released) When garage-rock trio the Bloodbirds dissolved last year, following the relocation of bassist Anna St. Louis, local music fans mourned the loss of one of their community’s most enigmatic groups. But in April, drummer Brooke Tuley announced the release of First Midnight, a small batch of songs she had recorded with her husband, Bloodbirds guitarist Mike Tuley, and now it seems that the best-loved parts of the band live on.

First Midnight opens with some dissonant electronics on “Waves,” and Brooke Tuley’s voice breaks in with a low, sullen monotone.

The track is less than two minutes, and it sets a spooky, spacey tone — something she carries, more or less, throughout the rest of the album. The reverb-soaked chords and lofi fuzz that were the Bloodbirds’ trademarks still crackle and pop on First Midnight, but much of the fury of her earlier band is traded for songs that could pass for discordant lullabies. “Black Death Specks” sounds like a bedroom recording for a rainy day, and on it, Tuley channels the dark moodiness of Nico and Sharon Van Etten. And by the time she gets to the jangly eulogy of “She’s Gone,” you’ve forgotten all about the singer’s pre-

Thanks to a serendipitous collaboration with Kendrick Lamar last year on his debut mixtape, Watts Up, Gee Watts is one of Kansas City’s most buzzed-about rappers. And when his debut, 199X (say: nineteen ninety never), was at last released, in April, it stirred up a flurry of approval from underground hip-hop blogs and local listeners.

Watts earned this success without a bunch of big-name assists; there are minimal guest appearances, and no Lamar. The appeal instead lies in Watts’ ability to merge throwback samples from the likes of Jay Z, Outkast and 2Pac with his own fresh flow and slick production (compliments of Arkutec, Mike Hurst and D/Will). The result is an album that was born from the blissful marriage of ’90s-era hip-hop and the synth-driven beats of the Internet age. It’s hard to settle on just one highlight of this excellent release, but “Flatline” makes a strong case as Watts delivers his purposeful lyrics over a smoky, jazzy bass line.

FederaTion oF HorsepoWer Hermanos de Sangre (self-released) It’s strange to think of a bunch of Midwestern white guys putting together this EP. It bookends three high-octane, full-throttle rockand-roll numbers between an instrumental cumbia (“De Estas Mano...”) and a cover of the traditional Mexican song “Volver Volver.”

Somehow, it all works. The instrumen-

red kaTe/THe Bad ideas Self-titled 7-inch split (Mills Record Co.) Red Kate and the Bad Ideas’ new split single marks the first release by local store Mills Record Co. Each side features two tracks from both groups, each song a brief starburst of joyful fury.

Both bands deliver their interpretation of punk rock skillfully and directly, and there’s plenty to like: driving riffs, fast drums and lots of vaguely melodic screaming. The themes here are far from original; on the Red Kate side, frontman L. Ron Drunkard first sings about longing for a lost lover (“On My Mind”), then following your dreams (“New Dreams”). The Bad Ideas choose a more anarchistic route, with singer Dawn nearly blowing out her vocal cords as she rants about the collapsing of society (“Apocalypse Detroit”) and working for the man (“I’m Stuck”). Punk has always been about the rough edges of imperfection, and these songs are no exception. Buy the vinyl and you can reflect on all that four times in a half-hour.

FINDING NORMAL

The Abnorm talks being a solo artist versus working with rap group Yawn Johnson.

ast year, local rappers the Abnorm, Huey P. Nuisance and Domineko formed Yawn Johnson. None of them knew how long the partnership would last. The group released its debut album in October. Even that was accidental. No one expected a full-length.

Seven months later, Yawn Johnson is still going strong. The trio opens Saturday’s show at the Riot Room for CES Cru, which has signed to Strange Music. The Pitch called the Abnorm at his KC home.

The Pitch: How did Yawn Johnson form?

The Abnorm: The back story on that is, we three — me, Huey P. and Domineko, formally known as iR neKo — we have the same manager, and he was like, “Why don’t you collaborate, make a song together?” And we had a producer who was gonna throw us a beat, and the beat was called “Yawn Johnson.” We decided to just roll with that as the group name.

We were just going to do that one song, but usually, when I’m working on my thing, I need the whole album started coming together. It to have a concept before I start writing. I want was really a quick process that came together it all to have the same feel, the same vibe. But honestly, with the Yawn Johnson thing, I think in about two and a half, three months. It was a much quicker process than I’m used to, and the reason that it was so popular is because there’s something for everyone on there. We we meshed really well together.

I remember talking to you last year, when got some serious stuff, something for people to Yawn Johnson was still new. You weren’t sure if turn up to and a lot of storytelling, and that’s it was going to be a real group or just a one-time the beauty of it. But that’s also challenging for thing. But you guys have been booking a lot of me because I like my shit to be really cohesive.

I remember for “Style Style,” we were instead of smoking on my tracks. I’m trying to find the balance of that in real life as well. The at Huey’s house, and the beat was playing, and the song just happened, just like that, joking way it comes across in the music is dark. I’m struggling with it. It’s what I’m going through one minute, writing the next. And then for the other ones — for, like, six of them, I think — we at the moment, and that’s dark.

Is it hard for you to be so personal with music wrote in the studio. We all brought songs in and that you’re putting out publicly? fleshed them out. It was so easy. The chemistry I just feel like once you really put your all was just there. We weren’t butting heads at all.

How does working with Yawn Johnson differ into your music, people are going to follow you that much more. Anyone can rap about jewels from your solo stuff?

Yawn Johnson came together pretty fast. and cars and money, but that’s not the life I’m living, and I’m gonna let you know what I’m We didn’t create it with a concept in mind. We living. People can connect with that a lot more were just putting out songs, you know? And

With red drapes and faux-classic paintings adorning its walls, Green Lady Lounge has felt joyously eclectic since it opened in December 2012. Last spring, the bar took that eclecticism a step further, replacing the main floor’s piano with a B-3 organ. Played correctly, it can fill the room with the soul of Ray Charles and the funk and jazz of Lonnie Smith. And that’s just what the Boogaloo 7 has been doing every Friday since the switch. Organist Chris Hazelton adds Nick Howell on trumpet, Nick Rowland on alto and tenor sax, Brett Jackson on baritone sax, Matt Hopper on guitar, Danny Rojas on drums and Pat Conway on congas.

Music Forecast Get all the jokes about Sarah McLachlan’s ASPCA commercial out of your system right now, because you’re unlikely to recall that particular piece of marketing when you hear her sing Thursday at Starlight. The Canadian songstress is on tour in support of Shine On, a sunny pop record that makes 1997’s Building a Mystery seem downright funereal. But even with a brand-new album to support, McLachlan won’t ignore her catalog of gloomy classics. Sure, you say you don’t really need to hear “Angel” or “I Will Remember You” ever again, but deep down, you know you really do.

The five members of Boy & Bear are latecomers to the whole hipster-folk sensation, but these Australians play the game just as well as Mumford who came before. Boy & Bear’s recent Harlequin Dream is a Fleet Foxes– paced slow-burner coated in waves of 1970s California dreams. Lead singer Dave Hosking coaxes you into a soothing, protective cocoon of sound, and the songs are pretty much perfect for a warm Sunday — which is probably what you’ll find when Boy & Bear performs at the Riot Room this weekend.

It’s a total wet dream of a double headliner, and whether you’re into cowboy hats and marijuana or women who rock a mean fiddle, Sunday’s show is a do-not-miss.

Whenever someone utters the phrase “cover band,” my mind immediately conjures up a sad scene of social misfits in tie-dyed T-shirts and socks-and-sandals combinations, holding up lighters for a clutch of musicians playing what vaguely sounds like the Grateful Dead or Van Halen. But Los Angeles four-piece Zepparella blasts that stereotype to bits. Drummer and founder Clementine (who goes by just the one name) originally began the project as a way to learn John Bonham’s drum parts. Now, though, the all-women Zeppelin tribute act has a decade under its belt and a diverse legion of dedicated fans. Live shows are a spectacle, so clear your night.

The Black Lillies

The Black Lillies were last in town for February’s Folk Alliance International Conference, and the act’s sets were among that event’s highlights. The Knoxville, Tennessee, band lives in the dirt-road dust clouds and backwoods highways where Americana, 1970s roots rock and Appalachian harmonies meet. Lead singers Cruz Contreras and Trisha Gene Brady work their instruments together beautifully, and it’s unlikely that these people will stay on the club circuit much longer.
