Make Essex’s Only Light Fantastic Train Spectacle Your Family Treat

Lambeth Marks Holocaust Memorial Day “You didn’t think about yesterday and tomorrow may not happen. It was only today that you had to cope with and you got through it as best you could.” Iby Knill, survivor of the Holocaust. Lambeth’s 2022 Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony will take place on Sunday, 23 January and again will be held in the Lambeth Assembly Hall. This event, to be attended by the Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Annie Gallop, will remember, honour and share stories from those persecuted in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. The theme for 2022 set by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is “One Day”. There will be several contributions, including from Dunraven School, Streatham & Clapham High School and the South London Liberal Synagogue. The event will run from 3pm to 4.30pm (doors open at 2.30pm). Attendance at the Commemoration is free and all are welcome. For more information on this year’s theme, visit www.hmd.org.uk.

At the end of November, the volunteers of the Epping Ongar Railway put the finishing touches to the Light Fantastic services week, ahead of a sell-out first weekend. The Light Fantastic service takes passengers from North Weald to Ongar and back aboard a brilliantly decorated train. After boarding, the music starts and the passengers travel to Ongar enjoying a show of music and lights along the way. On arrival at Ongar the train stops for a short while when everyone gets the chance to see the train in all its glory before returning to North Weald. The event builds on the previous years and everyone is set for it to be a sell-out. However, at the time of writing there are some tickets available before Christmas or why not think about taking the family out for an evening service with lights and music after Christmas? The Epping Ongar Light Fantastic runs on selected dates until 9 January 2022. For more information and to get tickets, visit www.eorailway.co.uk/events.

Christmas at the Brunel Museum

In 1843, two great Victorian masterpieces were unleashed onto the world: Brunel’s Thames Tunnel and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Transforming the Grand Entrance Hall into an underground cinema on selected nights, the Museum will host special screenings celebrating the man and his work. Dan Stevens stars as Dickens in The Man Who Invented Christmas, with the journey that led to the creation of the author’s timeless tale. In the second festive film, the role of the author is taken up by Gonzo the Great in A Muppet Christmas Carol, arguably the finest adaptation of the story.

The Go-To Service for Organising the Class Card At Group Cards they speed up the organising of greetings cards from groups of children and parents. It’s the go-to service for busy class representatives and is especially helpful during the Christmas season.

Group Cards launched in September 2019 and have already had fantastic feedback from satisfied customers. They are a growing company that helps groups show their recognition to valued teachers and friends by providing an easy to use, online platform for the gathering of messages and monetary collections. Their mission is to bring communities closer. Group Cards takes care of all of the leg work, chasing, reminding and message compilation, to deliver a well-presented card. Choose an eCard, a real card, or design your own. There are many designs to choose from and for eCards, you can have up to 35 messages FREE! Customers have said, “I’ve used Group Cards numerous times and will continue to recommend it to friends and family” and “Such a brilliant system, so easy to use – will be using it a lot!” Let Group Cards take away the hassle of organising the class Christmas card this year. Connect with Group Cards at www.groupcards.co.uk, fb @ groupcardsUK or IG @group.cards.

Learn to Swim Properly with Angela’s Swim School How Social Activities Benefit Children’s Development

Childhood is a key time for developing lifelong skills and abilities. One area that really helps children to learn and develop new skills is social playtime. This can include a wide range of activities from sports to performing arts. It covers anything that requires children to work together to play. Social playtime helps children to learn and develop many skills that will be vital as they become adults and will continue to benefit them throughout their lives. Some of the key ways social playtime helps children develop is by improving social skills, building confidence and developing children’s emotional intelligence. It also encourages teamwork and introduces the concept of friendly competition. At Jigsaw Performing Arts Schools your child can benefit from improving all of these skills through dance, drama and singing. Book your two week trial at www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk to discover if it is the right activity for your child.

Make room for swimming in your life. It’s the essential water safety life skill that’s highly inclusive and gives a total body workout, building muscle tone and improving breathing and circulation. Angela’s Swim School offers lessons to children from 4 months old, plus adult classes for all abilities. Learning to swim from a young age really helps children build in confidence, strength and stamina. To help children learn to swim the right way, Angela’s Swim School has developed the Swimstylers, who are at the heart of the school’s teaching programme. These inspirational characters break down how to become a strong, independent swimmer into clearly defined targets, which step-by- step show children how to progress their swimming with confidence and strong technique. The six Swimstylers characters feature on class names and awards so charting progress is really easy - that’s from non-swimmers up to a 1500m swim. The swim school’s founder swam competitively at the highest levels. Angela’s insight and winning techniques have been the basis of her swim teaching career for over 25 years and made Angela’s Swim School a major provider of lessons in the Southeast, with pools nearby in Southwark, Greenwich and Bromley. Give them the gift of swimming today. Join Angela’s Swim School.Visit www.angelasswimschool.co.uk for more information.

The Delancey UK Schools’ Chess Challenge is a multi-stage chess competition for UK based young chess players aged 18 years and younger. The competition welcomes players of all experience levels from beginner to seasoned junior international. The ‘Terafinal’ took place at Blenheim Palace with 60 players spread across the five age group sections with under 8s, 10s, 12s, 14s and 18s competing for an array of monetary prizes and trophies. Earning the winning trophies wasn’t an easy ride for any of the players, with a jam packed weekend of suspense-filled games charged with challenges and well co-ordinated moves. It has been a long journey to the Terafinal with more than 2,250 students representing over 800 schools and chess clubs competing online throughout the summer in the Megafinals and Gigafinals. Unfortunately, this is the second year in a row that the initial stages have been impacted by the pandemic, but this has not stopped these young chess enthusiasts, as more than 12,000 games have been played online and over half a million moves made. Young chess players have really taken to online chess and it has opened up new avenues for teaching, education and accessibility.
