Film Preview Guide We’ve all been missing going to the cinema this past year. We may have got square eyes watching the television so much but it really isn’t the same as the big screen is it? We’ve got some great ideas for you for your first trip back (plus one or two also available on streaming services).

Felix and the Hidden Treasure Felix and the Hidden Treasure is an adventurous and heart-warming story for all the family. Convinced that his father, who disappeared at sea two years ago, is still alive, 12-year-old Felix embarks on a search for him in the company of Old Tom, a retired fisherman, Squawk, a thieving one-legged parrot, and Rover, a cat who acts like a dog.Their journey takes them to Darkshadow Island, where a secret community inhabits an underground city, ruled by the megalomaniacal Morgäa, possessor of a priceless treasure. Felix and the Hidden Treasure from Signature Entertainment will be in cinemas nationwide from 4 June with previews from 28 May.

Luca Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Luca is a comingof-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his new found best friend but the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret. There are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface. Luca arrives on Disney+ on 18 June.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines From the humans who brought you Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie comes The Mitchells vs.The Machines, an animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet… saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right? It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people”. Her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising! Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet. Now it’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug Monchi, and two friendly, but simple-minded robots to save humanity. The Mitchells vs.The Machines is on Netflix now.

Tom and Jerry One of the most famous rivalries in history comes back to life in the live-action/ animated hybrid film when Jerry moves into New York City’s finest hotel on the eve of “the wedding of the century,” forcing the event’s desperate planner to hire Tom to get rid of him, in director Tim Story’s “Tom and Jerry.” The ensuing cat and mouse battle threatens to destroy her career, the wedding and possibly the hotel itself. But soon, an even bigger problem arises - a diabolically ambitious member of the hotel staff conspiring against all three of them.Tom and Jerry is out on digital platforms on 17 May and on physical and video-on-demand on 24 May.

Wildwood Wildcats

Wildwood Trust, in collaboration with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Vincent Wildlife Trust, is taking the first steps in a ground-breaking new project to establish the first wild population of the functionally extinct wildcat outside of Scotland in over 200 years. The project will be the first of its kind outside of Scotland and could herald a new dawn for this iconic British species which is on the verge of total extinction in the wild. The European wildcat is Britain’s rarest mammal and the only native cat species surviving in Britain. The wild population is thought to be less than 300 individuals, living exclusively in the remote Scottish Highlands. However that population has been declared ‘functionally extinct’ which means that there is no longer a viable population left in the wild. The species was hunted and persecuted to extinction in England and Wales a century ago, resulting in its disappearance. Loss and fragmentation of habitat and more recently interbreeding with domestic and feral cats, means it has not been able to return. Until now. Laura Gardner, Director of Conservation at Wildwood Trust told Primary Times, “Our goal is to return a viable and self-sustaining wildcat population to its former range. As a leading British wildlife conservation charity, we have developed years of experience and expertise in breeding wildcats in support of the existing Scottish conservation project. We are now excited to be utilising these skills to benefit wildcat recovery more broadly across Britain. This will be a long term commitment for Wildwood requiring increased resources and infrastructure so we are relying on the public’s support to help.” After announcing this exciting new partnership last year, Wildwood is now taking the first steps in building new wildcat breeding facilities. Each enclosure will house a breeding pair of cats, whose kittens will later be released into the wild. Wildcat mating usually takes place between January and March with litters of 1-8 kittens born between April and May. Breeding wildcats is notoriously difficult, as any noise and disturbance can adversely affect the cats. To ensure the survival and safety of the kittens, stress must be kept to a minimum. With this in mind, the new breeding enclosures will be built off-show at Wildwood Trust’s parks, helping to prepare kittens for life in the wild. The Trust needs £50,000 to complete the build and is calling on the public to get involved by donating to the project and giving wildcats a brighter future. You can visit the Wildwood Trust near Canterbury in Kent. The Trust has over 200 native animals, past and present. It is set in beautiful ancient woodland where visitors can see bears, wolves, bison, deer, owls, foxes, red squirrels, wild boar, lynx, wild horses, badgers, beavers and many more.

Support The Fiorentini Foundation The Fiorentini Foundation, the charitable arm of the Anna Fiorentini Theatre School, supports children with learning and/or physical disabilities and those that have been badly bullied or suffer from chronic health conditions. Due to Covid-19, fundraising had to stop. The school is now on a mission to bring in lost funds so that they can continue supporting their most vulnerable children. The school’s primary purpose is to instil in young people the key life skills including teamwork, self-expression, confidence, communication, discipline and respect and to support the younger generation in achieving their aspirations. Thanks to the renowned professionalism of the school they have also successfully launched the careers of many students helping them gain leading roles on TV and film and on the West End stage. They provide up to 85 bursaries per year for the most vulnerable children and are currently supporting 15 children with or affected by cancer who crave much needed fun and respite. During this pandemic student numbers have decreased from 560 to 165 due to social distancing regulations and fear of returning to classes. (Even with 560 students the organisation just about breaks even and remains not for profit). Thankfully the school has managed to get a disruption loan to cover all overheads that still had to be paid whilst unable to deliver full services. However, this is a loan and not a grant and still has to be paid back. For the school to be able to continue giving support to its most vulnerable children they need donations that can be allocated specifically for this purpose. If you think you might be able to help or would just like to find out more, please visit www.fiorentinifoundation.enthuse.com/cf/covid-19appeal. To find out more about the school, visit www. afperformingarts.com.

The Book Club will launch in June 2021 with its first title, A Dinosaur Ate My Sister by Pooja Puri, illustrated by Allen Fatimaharan - a laugh-out-loud, fully-illustrated time travel adventure. Join Brake’s Kids Walk

Thousands of school children are walking for road safety this June, with Brake’s Kids Walk. Brake, the road safety charity, is organising the event in which thousands of schoolchildren across the UK will take part in a short, supervised walk to promote important road safety messages. Children will walk in pairs in crocodile formation within their community, to emphasise the importance of being able to walk without fear or threat from traffic or pollution. The walk will take place on Wednesday 16 June. By signing up to Brake’s Kids Walk, schools and educators can access a free action pack featuring lesson plans, assemblies, activities, and posters, all brightly illustrated and featuring popular Shaun the Sheep characters. As well as teaching children vital road safety skills, Brake’s Kids Walk raises awareness among parents and other adults of the need to protect children on our roads. Posters and demonstration materials highlight what children need to be able to walk safely in their communities: footpaths, cycle paths, safe places to cross, and slow and clean traffic. Brake has been running walking events for school children at a national level for more than 15 years. The charity is also behind Road Safety Week – the UK’s biggest road safety campaign each November. All schools and education communities are invited to sign up to Brake’s Kids Walk 2021. Billionaire Boy From the award-winning West End producers of Gangsta Granny comes this amazing new production of David Walliams’ bestselling story Billionaire Boy. Ages 5+

When a school trip to the Natural History Museum in London reunites Jack and Megan with an old friend Trunk, they are whisked away to the Academy of Barmy Composers and the cities of Salzburg, Vienna and Paris for an adventure in opera’s classical period (1750–1820). Tasked with taking the music and stories of Windy Wolfie (Mozart, the penniless prodigy), Tortellini Rossini (the king of the dining table) and the moody but resilient Bilious Beethoven back to the present, will they be able to triumph over the return of Mozart’s most evil creation? It’s an accessible, fun introduction to opera for primary school children. Combining facts, jokes, songs, brilliant illustrations and a humorous story, this book is perfect for use as a teaching resource in schools as well for home-learning. The book has received praise from The National Children’s Orchestra who said, “The history of classical music has never been so much fun!” With two further ABC of Opera books planned, covering the Romantic and Modern music eras, these musical adventures through the history of opera are set to provide a unique and creative way to introduce children to this art form for many more years.

Wild Nights Out

Discover the magic of exploring the outdoors after dark with new book, Wild Nights Out, by Chris Salisbury. Take a walk on the wild side with the first nature guide to focus exclusively on exploring the night. Since 1880 when the first house was fitted with electrical lighting, artificial light has become the norm, creating more and more spaces lit 24 hours a day. Whilst much was to be gained by this new dawn for humanity, we have also, in turn, lost our familiarity with the dark. Over time darkness has become something to be feared, associated with crime and nightmares, rather than mystery and enchantment. In Wild Nights Out, Chris Salisbury encourages us to venture out into the dark to experience the way our eyes adjust and our other senses are enhanced, and to find joy in the natural wonders of the night. Perfect for parents, campers, teachers, nature educators and anyone who has used lockdown to explore their own environments recently, this thrilling hands-on guide is an introduction to nocturnal wildlife, their behaviours, their habitats and how to observe them without being detected. Learn how to call for owls, walk like a fox and expand your sensory perceptions. Not only will this instil a lifelong love of the dark, it will also boost the resilience and self-confidence of children and adults alike. An outdoor educator, Chris shares over twenty-five games, walks and exercises to reacclimatise to the dark, and invites us into this nocturnal

dimension with tales of the constellations and planets to share around the campfire. Whether it is a weekend away, summer holiday or just back garden adventures, his book provides all the practical information on how to conduct safe night walks, as well as interesting animal facts and mesmerising stargazing stories. Beautiful black-and-white illustrations are featured throughout. Wild Nights Out is published on 3 June at £14.99.

Education News Learn about Animals at Home

The RSPCA has launched a new education programme for parents to teach their children about animal welfare at home. The new programme focuses on the welfare of dogs, cats and rabbits and provides parents with information and activities they can

do with their children. During the pandemic, there has been a huge surge in pet ownership and these activities can help prepare those families who are thinking about getting a pet, or help those who have recently bought or adopted a pet, to learn more about their animal’s needs and behaviour. The programme begins by introducing the concept of compassion and outlining the animal’s needs, there are then a range of discovery activities focusing on dogs, cats and rabbits for parents and children to complete together, and the final section is advocacy which brings together their learning and encourages the family to champion animal welfare in a creative and imaginative way. This could be carrying out a litter pick, creating a wildlife friendly garden, or keeping an eye out for higher welfare labels like RSPCA Assured when shopping. David Allen, Head of Education and Prevention at the RSPCA, told Primary Times, “Whilst adults should always be ultimately responsible for pets, caring for them can involve the whole family. Children can help with things like cleaning small animal enclosures, preparing a pet’s food and enjoying going out for walks with the dog - all as part of regular supervised family activities. Helping to care for pets can encourage children to become more responsible and increase their empathy and compassion to others.”

The environmentally friendly ideas are accessible, affordable and easy to set up, while avoiding the need for single-use plastic. They’ll help you engage children in sustainable, stimulating science. This book will inspire teachers and engage children of all abilities. The

How to Help a Reluctant Reader The team at Clarssroom Private Tuition have put together a few tips for you. Reading is an important life skill. A popular quote says ‘Today’s reader, tomorrow’s leader’ (Margaret Fuller). We all want the best for our children and being able to read and comprehend is essential to making the most of life. So, what do you do if your child is a reluctant reader? Note that a reluctant reader is different from a struggling reader. If your child is a struggling reader, do get in touch with Clarssroom so that they can help you better understand what the challenges are specifically, and help your child overcome them. If your child is showing little to no interest in reading, the following tips can help get them consuming a few paragraphs or pages each day and in time even enjoying it!

1. Relate it to something they enjoy

We are more inclined to do things we enjoy and that probably goes double for children. So, if they enjoy singing, why not try to get them reading song lyrics (obvious) or a little about the songwriter or original singer (not so obvious). If they enjoy playing a particular video game, you could get them reading about the video game character or even the makers. Also, try various content, not just books, but comics, poems, magazines etc.

2. Make it fun

If your child thinks reading is a chore then they are likely to be disinterested in it. But if they identify with different characters in fiction or with books related to a TV show or movie they enjoy, that will change their perspective of reading. Another simple, quick and fun thing that can really help to improve your child’s reading skills is to turn on subtitles whilst they are watching TV and movies – that way, TV time is also reading time. 14

May-July 2021

3. Read with them

Lead (and read) by example. Consider reading through a recipe with them, a non-fiction story or a popular fairy tale. Then discuss what you think and how it makes you feel. You could take turns to read a chapter out loud. Let your child see you reading where possible and, if they ask, let them know why you are reading. You might be reading a news article (to be informed), a novel (to unwind/be entertained) or a textbook (to pass an exam).

4. Make them comfortable

The skill of reading is better learned than forced, so find out what your child is comfortable with and start there. It might help to have a dedicated reading time, even if it is just a few minutes, as well as a dedicated reading area if possible. Let them develop this skill at their own pace.

At Clarssroom they are there to support you, as you support your child and help them become the best reader that they can be. Visit their website www. clarssroom.co.uk or call 020 3991 6110. Follow us on Instagram - @primarytimesse

Physics isn’t the first GCSE Ipin has taken early, having passed her iGCSE Maths Higher Tier in 2019, when she was just seven years old. Ipin, who is now studying towards taking her A Levels in Maths and Physics, said on her ambitions for the future, “I would like to be the youngest person to attend the University of Cambridge. I like explaining topics to others and want to help people understand Physics, so I want to become a professor at a university in the future.” Commenting on Ipin’s achievements, Sarah Skevington, Head of Juniors at Blackheath High School, said, “Ipin embodies the Blackheath High spirit as an ambitious, driven and passionate pupil who is set on following her dreams. We’re proud that Ipin was able to achieve this during the pandemic whilst learning from home.”

whole class will be mesmerised by experiments to simulate a solar eclipse, build a wormery, make a lava lamp and watch a volcano erupt – all in a jar. Each science experiment is accompanied by a clear explanation of the science behind it, photocopiable worksheets with illustrated, stepby-step instructions for pupils to follow and evaluation sheets to consolidate learning. From science specialists to those just getting to grips with the subject, all teachers can deliver these environmentally friendly, inclusive activities with minimal preparation. Dr Sai Pathmanathan has over 20 years of experience in science education. She develops hands-on activities and resources for all ages and abilities, and runs science clubs and community events. Catching up After Lockdown Primary Times explores some of the ways we can try to bridge the gap in education after lockdown. The term ‘extra-curricular’ has probably never meant more to us than it does now, after the unprecedented upheaval of standard education that we’ve experienced over the last year or so! Many parents may inevitably be searching for the means to begin the ‘catch up work’ that they feel is needed, to replace what was lost during lockdown. Back in Autumn 2020, the Department for Education estimated that students in years 3-7 were on average a month behind on reading, and three months behind in maths. These findings prompted government funding to be allocated to help schools support children and enable them to regain confidence in these areas - to the relief of many. But, with access to these schemes depending on area and eligibility, some of us who want to give our kids an extra boost will be putting our homeschooling caps back on for a little while yet, at least. Primary Times takes a look at some top ways to boost learning after lockdown, both at school and at home.

Create a Reading List

Luckily, reading is something that can easily be worked on at home. Take some time to sit down with your child and make a list of books that they would be interested in reading over a period of weeks. Remind them - you can’t judge a book by it’s cover! Try to encourage one or two choices that might be a little out of their normal comfort zone, so that they have a broad range of themes. Allocating daily time for them to read independently (every night before bed works well), or with you, will have a positive effect on their confidence, vocabulary, writing, and their world knowledge.

Summer Schools

Current government guidance states that by mid-June, schools should be informing parents whether they plan to run a summer school, and if so, how many places they intend to offer. These will be particularly beneficial to (and largely aimed at) children who are making the transition to Secondary Education. Check your child’s school website for latest news or ask their teacher for more information on availability in your local area!

Tuition

While private tuition may be an option that could certainly give your child an extra legup on the curriculum, eligible families can also take advantage of the National Tutoring Programme. It’s a scheme in which schools are offered access to subsidised tuition for children who require extra support following the effects of Covid-19. The government provided £350M to fund this scheme at the end of last year, and it will be in place until academic year 2021/2022.

Maths is everywhere…

Whether it’s weighing out ingredients to bake a cake, cutting up a pizza into fractions or getting them to measure the height of their brothers and sisters – maths in the home is all around you when you look for it. There are also some great, free online resources like www.mathsontoast.org. uk or www.whiterosemaths. com that are packed with at-home mathematical activities designed to flex their arithmetic muscles.

Maths in everyday life A trip to the supermarket Looking at price labels, calculating the percentage discounts of reduced items and handling money and calculating change at the checkout can all contribute to children’s mathematical learning. Cooking at home Choose a recipe that produces a smaller amount than the number of people in your family, such as four biscuits for a family of 8. Fun Gardening Activities for Children It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from 29 May to 6 June, so it’s the perfect time to get children into gardening. Whether you have a small patio or a large lawn, gardening is a great and inexpensive way to get your little ones outside, appreciating nature and getting creative. Here are some fun ideas which we’ve put together in conjunction with Squire’s Garden Centres to get your children into gardening. Quirky Planter Creations

Turn unwanted items into perfect plant pots! You’ll be amazed at what can be recycled – old wellies, a pair of jeans, empty food tins or even plastic bottles all make fantastic planters. Then watch as your flowers bloom.

Create Crackin’ Cress Heads

Carefully remove the top of your eggs, wash the shells and dab them dry. Draw faces on your shells with felt tip pens. Dip some cotton wool in water, squeeze out the excess, and then place one cotton wool ball inside each shell. Sprinkle a few cress seeds on top. Sit your cress-filled shells in egg cups or an egg box on a sunny windowsill and watch them grow! Cress seeds are available for £1.99 at Squire’s.

Bring Bees to Your Garden

Gardens with bees mean that your flowers and fruit will be pollinated and then set seed, and most importantly produce fruit for you.To make bees welcome, why not add quiet areas in the garden for wildlife, including bees, to take over? World Bee Day is on 20 May.You could take the opportunity to make a bee hotel. Bee homes are fun to make and can be made into a pretty, as well as a useful, feature in the garden. The Wildlife Trusts have a guide about how to make one at https:// www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-make-bee-hotel. If you really get

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

into bees in your garden, Friends of the Earth have a Bee Saver Kit which includes a spotter guide, hints about making your garden bee friendly, bee friendly seeds and more.

Grow Your Own

Try growing tomatoes, strawberries or even a pumpkin in time for Halloween! Pumpkin seeds can be sown outdoors in May and June and are £1.99 per pack at Squire’s.

Encourage Other Wildlife into Your Garden

Add flowering plants such as lavender, foxgloves or roses which provide nectar, plant a shrub or tree for shelter, create a log pile for bugs and insects, or add a pretty ladybird tower to your garden.

Sensational Sunflowers

Sunflowers are bright and cheery and very easy to grow. Sow seeds outdoors in May and the flowers will bloom from June to September. Sunflower seeds are available for £1.99 per pack at Squire’s. Squire’s also has a ‘tallest sunflower’ competition that children can enter. Simply take a photo of your child next to their tallest sunflower between 1-20 August 2021 for the chance to win £100! Find all the details at www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Make Your Own Miniature Terrarium

Use a clean glass or jam jar and add a layer of decorative stones and sand. Top with soil, and then add moss on top that will act as grass. Plant miniature plants or cuttings into your jar. Add a small rock, or even mini people, Lego figures, plastic dinosaurs or animals to really bring your terrarium to life!

There are 16 Squire’s Garden Centres across the South East. Shop instore or buy online for local delivery at www.squiresgardencentres. co.uk

As you get ready for the inevitable spring clean, your little ones can lend a helping hand with their very own child-sized tools from Casdon. Henry and Hetty’s faces go hand in hand with happy housework and these mini versions won’t disappoint as each item works in a similar way to the adult version. ReNewToys

One of the biggest problems we face today is the impact of man-made materials on the environment. For example, 95% of the pollution in the Mediterranean Sea is plastic. Similar problems are being experienced all around the planet. It is with this idea in mind that Mondo, a multinational group with over 70 years of experience in the toy market, has launched ReNewToys. This brand-new set of beach products (buckets, rakes, spades and more) is built using recycled materials coming from the preconsumer food chain. Food grade plastics cannot contain dyes or other additives deemed harmful to humans, therefore enhancing the chemical safety of Mondo toys. They are the ideal choice for playing outdoors while taking care of our coastlines.

Winning @ Home Education Books

The world of education and learning has evolved rapidly since the pandemic, with youngsters now needing to engage in different ways, particularly when it comes to the “new normal” of learning from home. Some home education books can look a bit bland and don’t seem to represent today’s society. That certainly couldn’t be said of the new Winning @ Education series which is a fun and exciting way of introducing your child to maths and English. The Winning @ range is designed to help your child develop a love of learning from as young as 3 years old.The entertaining activities help children achieve their academic milestones and build their confidence. There are different objectives highlighted on every page to trace their progress and encourage children to work independently. These fun activity books will help increase confidence, independence and love of learning. All volumes in the series are available now from the publisher’s website at www.snowtigermedia.co.uk.

The Wingman

Perfect for playing in the park, the Wingman is light, quite small (15 cm across) and easy for little fingers. It throws like a Frisbee but with its unique aerodynamic design, Wingman flies over 130 feet and doesn’t veer off course to leave you or your partner hanging. With its silicone material, you can catch it easily by squishing it in your hand and fold it away to fit snugly in your pocket. It is described as indoors and outdoors safe and while it’s very light, I wouldn’t necessarily throw it at your favourite vase! It is however very unlikely to cause injuries. The Wingman is available at about £7 from Amazon and leading toy and leisure stores.
