w Candle Child Bereavement Service Just like adults, children react to death in different ways at different times. They may seem to be sad, very naughty or not to care at all. They may have behaviour or concentration problems at school or home, difficulties with eating or sleeping and feel very anxious or guilty. St Christopher’s Hospice understands how difficult it can be to find a way to explain what has happened, to cope with their questions and to manage their behaviour. St Christopher’s Hospice is there to support them, and you, through their Candle Child Bereavement Service. They offer one-to-one and group counselling for any child or young person in Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham or Southwark experiencing loss through death. They also offer specialist training, advice and consultancy services to schools and other organisations working with children facing bereavement and an advice service for parents and professional carers. To ensure that they can continue to offer support whilst keeping you safe during the pandemic, they have reshaped their service. St Christopher’s aren’t currently able to offer face-to-face appointments, but they’re still here for you, with sessions now done over the phone. Any parent, carer, teacher or health care professional can make a referral and young people over 16 can refer themselves. See www.stchristophers.org.uk/candle for more details.

Maritime Academy Trust’s ‘Five Meals for £15’

Pupils from Maritime Academy Trust Schools, in Kent and south east London, were so inspired by Marcus Rashford’s #EndChildFoodPoverty campaign, and his latest collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge to promote healthy daily budget recipes, they created their own ‘5 Meals for £15’, Maritime Recipe eBook using BookCreator. The delicious recipes range from traditional ‘Toad in The Hole’ to ‘Colourful Prawn Salad’, and include options for vegetarian and vegan diets, with preparation and cooking times. There are also recipe tips including variations, such as adding meat, prawns or Quorn to ‘Thai Style Veggie Rice’ for extra protein, and useful budgeting ideas, such as roasting a whole chicken and using the remaining portions for meals later in the week. The Trust is concerned that the level of child poverty in the UK has increased over the last five years with a dramatic rise during the pandemic and the economic crisis accompanying it. Today’s statistics are alarming. Before Covid-19, 4.3 million children were living in poverty in the UK, that’s 9 in every classroom of 30. 2.3 million children experienced food insecurity between August 2020 and January 2021. Two in five children (1.3 million) in the UK living under the poverty line are not eligible for Free School Meals. Marcus Rashford has highlighted the need for children and young people to be encouraged to develop their cooking skills and understand how to budget, plan and create healthy and delicious meals. Sparking an interest in cooking with projects like these, ensures that pupils are on the way to developing these lifelong skills, and maybe the next generation of Michelin-starred chefs are in the making!

Summer Treats at Greenwich Theatre

This summer, Greenwich Theatre is showcasing two spectacular shows for the entire family. The rescheduled adaptation of Joan Aiken’s acclaimed novel The Wolves of Willoughby Chase will run alongside a brand-new retelling of family-favourite Pinocchio. The productions will combine captivating music and magical storytelling for children aged 6 to 12. The Wolves of Willoughby Chase tells the story of two brave and determined girls as they encounter unforgettable characters, take on ferocious wolves and battle through snowy wastelands. Bonnie, Sylvia, and their friend Simon the gooseboy soon realise that the wolves roaming the forests outside may not be as dangerous as the wolfish adults plotting inside. Carlo Collodi’s iconic tale of a talking puppet, Pinocchio, has been adapted specifically for Greenwich Theatre by Anthony Clark. Packed with puppetry, a wood-influenced score, and a sense of adventure, the production is a beautiful re-imagining of the original material. Join Pinocchio, a talking cricket and a whole host of characters, as they discover the impact of their actions and lies. These magical, musical, multi-rolling treats are the perfect way to celebrate the summer in true theatrical style.

Fun Days Out with the Family

Congregation – An Outdoor Sonic Adventure this August

As we look forward to the summer months and having fun together, Team London Bridge is collaborating with award winning artist Ray Lee to bring the outdoor sonic adventure, Congregation, to the London Bridge area. Go along and take a voyage of discovery with your family and friends through the streets and parks of London Bridge. Explore the surrounding area ending at a secret location led by a magical sphere. The orb seemingly has a mind of its own as it tells you which way to walk by the sounds it makes. If you’re not heading in the right direction, it will let you know! As you go on your journey through familiar sites and less known territory you will reach a destination where the spheres will join in a pulsing web of electronic sound. Ray Lee, creator of Congregation, is an artist and composer who has won many awards. Ray has toured his work nationally and internationally with appearances at major outdoor programmes around the world. Congregation is part of a year-round cultural

programme run by Team London Bridge. Attractions in the area include Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast, Unicorn Theatre, the Old Operating Theatre, The View from the Shard, the London Bridge Experience and Bridge Theatre. School’s Out for Summer...

Elephants Spread Across London!

If you go down to some of London’s parks over the next few weeks you may be even more surprised than you would be by a teddy bear’s picnic. A herd of a hundred elephants will be spread across Green Park, St James’s Park, and Berkeley Square until 23 July. As you may have guessed, the elephants are beautiful statues, not living creatures. The herd were hand-crafted by The Real Elephant Collective – a group of artists and indigenous Adivasi tribals, and have travelled all the way from the Nilgiri Hills of Southern India. Marking the climate change conference COP26, the CoExistence campaign aims to trigger a moment of collective empathy for the world’s biggest and most intelligent land animal, that, like so many magical creatures, now find themselves living in humandominated landscapes. As the herd make their way around the globe, they are telling the story of human encroachment on wild spaces and inspiring the world to find ways to coexist with all the other living beings that make our world magical – from tigers and orangutans to tree sparrows and elephants. Projects made possible by the sale of the sculptures include the securement of wildlife corridors which enable safe movement for animals and people, and the protection of vital indigenous tribal knowledge and livelihoods. Following London, the pachyderm parade will make their way to the USA where they will migrate, in matriarchal fashion, from the east to west coast of America. This stage of their monumental, life-long journey will last 3 years and cover over 13,000 miles. Photo credit: Claire Wood

A Day Out to Margate Caves

Looking for something different to do with the kids over the summer holidays? Why not hop on the train to sunny seaside town Margate and take a subterranean journey through time at one of its hidden gems – The Margate Caves. Back in 1807, wealthy Margate gentleman Francis Forster made an extraordinary discovery. Beneath a pear tree in his garden was a huge underground cave system, the remains of a chalk mine that had been hidden for more than 100 years. He commissioned paintings, fashioned an ice well to store his wine collection and created a space to entertain the great and good of Margate. Now, concealed beneath an ordinary road in the town and accessed via a twisty 15m tunnel, the Margate Caves open up to reveal a magical subterranean cavern, filled with colourful cave paintings and murals, relatively unchanged since Forster’s time. Enthusiastic volunteers are on hand to highlight the fascinating stories, murky myths and geological quirks of this mysterious site, which over the years has been used as a Victorian tourist attraction and wartime air raid shelter. Above the ground in the award-winning Visitor Centre, there is a lovely café, a gift shop and a fact-packed discovery room displaying the extraordinary history of the Caves, showing how it is entwined with Margate’s rich social and cultural past and weaving stories of drunken gentlemen, local giants, ancient Kings, shameless smugglers and enterprising vicars... What will you discover?

Spark4Kids Summer Computer Workshops

Computational thinking – the instinctive ability to work out exactly how to tell a computer what to do – is as important as numeracy and literacy in today’s digital world. By learning to code, children gain this key skill. An often overlooked aspect of coding is how much of a creative outlet it can be for children. Coding allows children to express their ideas computationally and gets them thinking of themselves as creators and not just consumers of technology If your child loves technology, then attending a Spark4Kids workshop and learning to code or touch-type could be their ultimate holiday activity! Term-time online classes and DofE (Skills) courses are also available. To book, visit www.spark4kids.com/summer-2021-workshops, or call Spark4Kids on 020 8090 1444. Primary School Heroes Inspire Active Kids

Children are inspired to be active more by primary school teachers than professional athletes, according to a new poll of parents of children aged four to 11 by health body, ukactive Kids. The poll shows that 67% of parents in the UK think that teachers are ‘fairly’ or ‘very’ inspirational as role models for their child to keep active, as opposed to athletes (60%). As pupils approach the end of their first term back after lockdown, the poll sheds light on the importance of more physical activity as part of the school day, and the vital role that school staff play in providing it. The campaign is supported by Team GB 400m hurdler Jessie Knight, who told Primary Times, “We know kids look up to athletes who act as positive role models, but as this poll shows it’s so important we recognise the unsung heroes working behind the school gates who are not only teaching but also motivating kids to be more active every day. As an athlete and a school teacher, it’s a great feeling to inspire children to be more active and to see the joy and positivity it brings them, as well as the physical rewards.”
