We are so glad to be back after such a long time of not printing. When we last published a magazine, back in March, we had no idea that we wouldn’t publish another one until now. What a difficult and stressful time it’s been for everyone. I really hope that life returns to normal soon. Thank you so much to all the school staff for helping to hand out Primary Times this month. We’ve worked really hard to be able to publish this issue. Thank you to all our staff, advertisers, suppliers and schools who have supported us. Our magazines were delivered wrapped in protective bags and packed in cartons so thank you to our printers and distributors too for taking such care. September is when we publish our comprehensive Choosing your New School feature, designed to help Year 5 and Year 6 pupils decide on which secondary school to choose. Some schools are hoping to hold open days at the schools while others are going to hold virtual open days. (Some schools didn’t know at the time of us going to press.) We haven’t been able to publish our open day tables this year, but we have included a table of secondary schools so do check when and how they are organising their open days this year. Many businesses have been hit very hard with the lockdown and sadly not every business will survive. Now that times are hopefully getting a little easier do try and support your local businesses. They really need you. Stay safe and well.

A Safe Return to Jigsaw Performing Arts

Jigsaw Arts celebrated 25 years this summer, but they certainly didn’t expect to have the year we have had! But they are delighted to be back doing what they love doing, after a challenging few months. Health and safety have always been their number one priority, but they have further enhanced procedures in all their schools now, ready for a return this autumn. They ran a hugely successful trial of these new systems in one school during the summer, to ensure that they created a safe environment, whilst still providing a fun and creative outlet for students. Sessions are designed to develop children’s confidence, focus and social skills from an early age, giving them a head start in life. Performing arts is great for well-being and happiness. Dance really gets bodies moving, excellent for aerobic fitness and co-ordination. Learning to use breath and voice to make a great sound in singing is exhilarating and improves the speaking voice. Drama combines movement and voice as well as lots of teamwork and thinking on your feet which builds confidence, creativity and self-esteem. There is nothing better than performing arts to connect and bring people together. It’s also lots of fun and lots of laughs - just what we need right now! For more information or to book a two-week trial, search for your nearest school on their website www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk.

Razzamataz Maidstone & Medway are preparing to get back to the classroom from September. When schools closed their doors in March, Razzamataz Maidstone and Medway were determined not to abandon their families and took the classes online for all students ranging in age from two to eighteen. As well as the regular classes, the students have been enjoying special guest workshops with stars from West End shows including The Lion King, Hamilton and Les Miserables as well as a Zoom class with Sky 1’s Got to Dance. To continue to inspire students, the teams at Razzamataz have been non-stop with activities. The Seniors Zoom Evening In allows all the oldest students to catch up and get creative with set team projects. There was also an online performance of Rent on social media, which achieved 10,000 views across Instagram and reached 13,000 people of Facebook. Before reopening, all of the schools have completed a COVID-secure health and safety audit to ensure the safety of students, families, staff and wider communities. Choosing your New School with

The definitive guide to open days for that all important decision.

At every age of their development, your child is an individual growing in confidence, resilience and experience.

Choosing your New School

Choosing your Child’s Secondary School

It’s been a strange year – there’s an understatement if ever there was one. However, some things still have to happen and choosing your child’s secondary school is one of those. If your child is in Year 6, you still need to submit your application by the end of October. If they’re in Year 5, it’s also good to get your ideas together now. Choosing a secondary school may at first appear to be a daunting and complicated decision faced by parents. However it doesn’t need to be. Although it’s important and with so many schools to choose from, with so many variables and specialisations, there are ways to make the process of finding the best school for your child easier. We have lots of ideas here as well as a table of local school websites to help you. Schools are telling you about themselves in different ways. Some are still holding open days but numbers are limited to maintain safe social distancing and booking is almost always required. So make sure that you register nice and early so as not to miss out. Others are doing virtual open days but numbers may still be limited and attendance and appointments to speak online to staff may still need to be booked so don’t leave it too long.

Opportunities at The Hayesbrook School

The Hayesbrook School inspires student aspiration through excellent teaching and a wide and varied curriculum. It places a strong emphasis on enrichment opportunities through a multitude of after school activities and visiting speakers as well as local, national and international trips and visits. Offering students new opportunities develops confidence and self-esteem which in turn supports academic success. In association with Chelsea Foundation Football Academy, the school offers a unique opportunity for students who are serious football players, both male and female, who want to study level 3 qualifications to combine their academic studies and train like professionals with UEFA certified coaches. The School is also proud to have its own Combined Cadet Force (CCF) available to students, and works in partnership with Tonbridge School to offer students a full range of opportunities including off site experiences to apply their skills and knowledge. Together, the new cadets develop qualities such as self-discipline, loyalty and respect, strong leadership, teamwork and resilience that will help them achieve excellence and shape their own future. The school’s focus to motivate students has supported the development of a whole new curriculum which was launched during 2019. This includes a new approach to teaching English. The school’s approach has adopted and applied the Rehearsal Room Shakespeare approach, where the aim is to extend students’ ability to explore the English language in the same way actors do when rehearsing a play. Students are encouraged as a group to collaboratively establish the world in which a story takes place, tell the story, reveal the characters and explore the language. From September 2020 the curriculum experience for students is being carefully re-modelled again in order to ensure adequate opportunity to catch up with progress that time away from school may have affected, during the pandemic. With a strong emphasis on developing reading and vocabulary, students will also have additional time to accelerate their numeracy and literacy skills. For more information, please visit www.hayesbrook.kent.sch.uk.

St Joseph’s Convent Preparatory School St Joseph’s is an independent Prep and Pre-Prep (nursery) school for three to eleven-year-olds, in Gravesend. They pride themselves on offering educational excellence with a varied programme of extra-curricular activities and events to help their children develop into independent learners, to prepare them socially, morally and culturally for the world that awaits them. St Joseph’s pupils benefit from an exceptional curriculum with small class sizes allowing for more focussed and tailored learning. All children, from pre-prep to Year 6, also have lessons with specialist teachers in languages, speech and drama, music and physical education. This is all achieved while keeping fees affordable. The school’s proprietors, the Sisters of Mercy, founded St Joseph’s to offer an excellent education to as many children as possible. To achieve this, all income is reinvested into the school, keeping the fees as low as possible. Situated in Gravesend, the school has easy access to the A2 and M2. The former home of Charles Dickens, Gad’s Hill, is an independent day school in Rochester, Kent, for girls and boys aged between 3 and 16 years old. Set in more than 12 acres, Gad’s Hill boasts modern facilities while retaining many of its traditions since being founded as a school in 1924.The new part of the school, including a theatre, refectory and sports hall, was built in 2013 and sits aside the 18th century country manor where Dickens lived until his death in 1870. A typical day at Gad’s Hill may see senior students study English in Dickens’ former bedroom before exercising on the indoor climbing wall in the school’s purpose-built sports hall. From the Nursery, which is set in the great author’s apple orchard, to GCSE lessons, class sizes are small, allowing teachers greater knowledge of pupils’ individual strengths and personalities. The broad curriculum values practical and vocational subjects alongside the more traditionally academic, with pupils able to follow a pathway to GCSE in Art, Design Technology, Drama, Food Preparation & Nutrition and PE in addition to Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography, Spanish and Computer Science. Music BTEC is also available. At the same time, the innovative Combined Cadet Force programme offers a suite of qualifications, including Institute of Leadership and Management, BTEC, Duke of Edinburgh and First Aid awards that deliver the vital life skills to equip leavers for adult life. The school works in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, recently named Modern University of the Year 2019 by The Times’ Good University Guide, to train and inspire the creative talents of its students. Additional co-curricular activities throughout Gad’s Hill include London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art courses (LAMDA), fencing, rock climbing, dance, singing and instrumental music lessons. Gad’s provides a bus service throughout Gravesham, Longfield, Kings Hill and Medway for junior and senior students and offers wraparound care from 7.30am-6pm for kindergarten and junior children. Choosing your New School

Beth Tweddle’s Curriculum Programme

The Olympian-led Beth Tweddle Curriculum Programme is available to schools across the UK from September. The new 10-week online programme focuses on physical literacy, as well as Beth Tweddle values such as friendship, respect and determination and is aligned to Key Stages 1 and 2, with outcomes across Science, PHSE and Physical Education. The complete programme can be used for the whole school and consists of weekly videos and resources provided exclusively by Olympic medallist and world champion gymnast, Beth Tweddle MBE. Since launching in the North West in 2015, the Beth Tweddle Curriculum has engaged over 30,000 children and more than 300 schools. Beth Tweddle told Primary Times, “I’m passionate about ensuring all children are given the opportunity to have fun and stay active in school, so this next step to offer our programme nationally is something myself and the team are so proud of. We’ve had nothing but great feedback so far from pupils and teachers and we feel now is the right time for the programme to be made available to all primary schools. “Now, more than ever, it’s crucial for children to be fit and active. We designed the programme to be fun and engaging with the ability to deliver both in the classroom or living room, if pupils are learning from home.” Schools that sign up will receive a full 10-week programme, with each week focusing on a new value, as well as videos, a knowledge and understanding piece (KS1 and KS2), a physical literacy lesson, a 30-second participation challenge and a certificate for each week. The programme works within school term times so there are three start points in a year. However, a school can theoretically start at any point during the term and deliver it continuously for 10 sessions. The physical literacy programme aligns with social distancing as it can be delivered within teachers’ own parameters and can support teachers who do not usually deliver Physical Education. To find out more or sign up to the programme, go to bethtweddlegymnastics.co.uk/national-curriculum or email samantha. scotland@btgymnastics.co.uk.

Walk, Cycle or Scooter to School

As children and young people head back to school, families are being encouraged to travel by foot, bike or scooter. With roads a lot busier now, parents and carers are being asked to play their part in cutting congestion, reducing carbon emissions and boosting children’s health. Recently released guidance from the Department for Education shows that at least 50% of journeys to school of two miles or less need to be walked and cycled in order to allow space for those on socially distanced public transport who need to travel further. The health benefits from changing your school run routine can be significant. Currently only around half of children aged five to 16 are meeting the UK Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations of at least 60 minutes moderate-vigorous activity per day across the week. Sustrans has teamed up with the Bikeability Trust to invite schools across the UK to take part in this year’s Bike to School Week. The event runs from 28 September to 2 October and celebrates the amazing benefits that an active school run can bring. Cycle training, such as Bikeability, can help pupils cycle safely and confidently on the road. Photo credit: Chris Foster 16

What’s New for the High Weald Academy?

Students and the community of Cranbrook saw the exciting opening of their new state-of-the-art secondary school during the last academic year. The purpose built, 21st century school building is one of the best and most modern learning environments in the area, providing students with an inspirational setting to achieve and excel. All the 69 classrooms and offices maximise natural light and have climate control to ensure a comfortable place in which to concentrate and focus. The brand new science laboratories, art rooms, ICT suites and drama studio provide specialist spaces for students to experience new things. The school’s focus to motivate students has supported the development of a whole new curriculum which was launched during 2019. This includes a particular focus on a new maths curriculum, which has been developed to allow and support every student within The High Weald Academy to succeed and achieve their best. Through adopting and applying the Maths Mastery approach, the aim is to extend students’ ability to explore maths. Students will be encouraged to utilise the five pillars of the mastery approach to hone their knowledge and understanding of how to apply their learning and develop their confidence in such a vital subject discipline. As we return to lessons in September the curriculum experience for students is being carefully re-modelled again in order to ensure adequate opportunity to catch up with progress that time away from school may have affected, during the pandemic. With a strong emphasis on developing reading and vocabulary, students will also have additional time to accelerate their numeracy and literacy skills.

Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System Have you ever wanted to know more about the solar system we live in? Are you a budding astronaut trying to pick which planet to go to first? Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System is the perfect guide to the universe we live in. Primary Times was lucky enough to speak to Dr Maggie and pick her brains about space.

What can readers expect from your book? Did you ever want to be an astronaut? Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System allows readers to take an epic journey that no human or space probe has ever made. It’s a guided tour through the solar system, exploring all the wonderful highlights out there, such as the largest mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons on Mars, which is nearly two and a half times the height of Mount Everest. There are so many amazing things to see in outer space and with this book you can visit them all.

What made you first interested in space? It was the Moon landing that had the biggest impact on me. I was born during a fantastically exciting time for space exploration and heard about it a lot as I was growing up.

What’s your favourite planet? They’d all be amazing to visit, but the one I would like to go to the most is Mars. Mars is smaller than Earth but we know that it used to have liquid water running over its surface. I would love to go to investigate why the planet changed so much and find out what happened to the water. 20

Sept - Oct 2020

Yes! I have wanted to go into space ever since I was a small child and I would still love to today.

Do you think aliens exist? If you look out into the night sky, you can see thousands of stars. Each one of those stars is a sun like ours, and many of them sit at the heart of a solar system just like ours. We call the planets that orbit around these distant stars ‘exoplanets’ and we are discovering more and more all the time. Our galaxy, known as the Milky Way, contains around 300 billion stars, that means there are hundreds of billions of planets. We also think that there are around 100 billion galaxies in the universe. That is a mind boggling number of planets. With all these planets out there in the universe, it seems unlikely that life would have only occurred here on Earth. Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System by Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock and illustrated by Chelen Ecija is out now, in hardback, priced £12.99 (Buster Books). Family Health Health has never been higher on the agenda for families than it is now for a variety of reasons. We’ve pulled together some useful tips on key areas of concern for families during this time. Coronavirus (COVID-19) The NHS website is the primary resource for the most up-to-date advice and information for the current pandemic and contains frequently updated guides to testing, symptoms and treatment. CBBC Newsround has compiled a special Coronavirus minisite which contains helpful and entertaining videos and is frequently updated www.nhs.uk/conditions/ coronavirus-covid-19 www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/51861089

Child Flu vaccine As with previous years, primary school aged children will be offered their vaccination in school. In some areas, it might be offered in primary care settings. Children who are home educated will also be offered the vaccine. Pre-schoolers aged 2 and up will begiven the vaccination at their GP surgery usually by the practice nurse. www.nhs.uk/conditions/ vaccinations/child-flu-vaccine

Eye Health Free NHS sight tests are available at opticians for children under 16 and for young people under 19 in full-time education. Local opticians will have special arrangements in place in order to make appointments safe in this present time. www.nhs.uk/conditions/ eye-tests-in-children

Foot Health Well fitting shoes, are an essential part of helping to ensure good child foot health and can prevent problems in later life as the bones in a child’s foot do not fully form until they are around 18 years old. Independent shoe shops often offer a child foot measuring service, however, at the moment we note that some parents may have reservations about visiting stores for this purpose. Websites such as the one for Start-Rite shoes have a downloadable paper measuring guide and Clarks currently offer virtual fittings through an online Zoom video call. www.startriteshoes.com/ measure-at-home www.clarks.co.uk/ measureandfit-shoe-size

Mental Health and family relationships We know that this is a challenging time for many families in a variety of different ways. The NSPCC website is full of advice and resources dealing with family mental health issues in everyday life and during the coronavirus pandemic. Take a look at the Action for Children website for links to national helpline and organisations who supply general support to children, as well as adults. Reading Well for Children is a fantastic list of recommended books to promote mental health and wellbeing with books. Check out the websites/social media of your local library to see what arrangements they currently have in place as it is possible to access some texts via online systems/ audiobooks/ebooks/download. www.nspcc.org.uk www.actionforchildren.org.uk/ support-for-parents reading-well.org.uk/books/ books-on-prescription/children

Nutrition The NHS Change 4 Life website has some great resources on eating healthily, understanding nutritional information and cost-effective recipes that are suitable for families and healthy snacking www.nhs.uk/change4life

Exercise Local parks are great places for families to carry out socially-distanced exercises where sports clubs may currently be operational. At home, don’t forget that The Body Coach’s ‘PE With Joe’ sessions are still available on YouTube as a special playlist for all the family and the excellent Change4Life website has a series of 10 minute shakeup exercise games involving famous Disney and Pixar characters. We also recommend the Cosmic Kids Yoga YouTube channel for fun themed yoga through storytelling and popular characters including Trolls, Harry Potter and Frozen. Search YouTube for The Body Coach – then find PE With Joe in the playlists tab www.nhs.uk/10-minute-shake-up/ shake-ups www.youtube.com/user/ CosmicKidsYoga/featured
