LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

“Uniting our community” has been core to our mission since I co-founded South Bronx United 15 years ago. We know that a strong community can make all the difference for youth and families in the face of challenges. This is why we opened the SBU Clubhouse in 2022 to provide a home for the organization, a safe space during out-of-school time for South Bronx teens, and a hub for both academic and soccer programs. This was also a driver behind the construction of our Clubhouse Café. It opened on January 8th giving us the unique ability to reach our community—the broader South Bronx, our immediate Concourse and Mott Haven neighborhood, and families already connected to SBU programs—in a new way.

The café also strengthens our community by serving as the foundation for our new workforce development program. Since launching in July with a small cohort of 16- to 24-year-olds, the program has given us a new way to support young adults in the South Bronx keeping young men and women in school or employed while giving them the skills needed to succeed in a career of their choosing. Along with our existing college and career success supports for SBU Academy alumni, these programs stand in contrast to the Bronx as a whole, where the youth unemployment stands at 24%, representing an epidemic of young adults, and especially Black and Latinx young men, who are out-of-school and out-of-work. South Bronx United programs have sought to ensure that our graduates avoid this predicament and become positive contributors to their families, their community, and the world.

Of course, the important work with the next generation starts well before they turn 16 years old. In 2023, our programs reached more than 1,600 children and youth. South Bronx United instilled health, fitness, teamwork, and joy by delivering soccer programming at eight locations: the SBU Clubhouse, plus parks and schools throughout Mott Haven, Morrisania, and the Concourse. Our youngest participants build athletic and social skills through indoor soccer classes at two years old. At age four, children can start in our Recreational Soccer Program, and by elementary school children can also participate in our Community School sites or in the SBU Pre-Academy. In middle school, our heaviest programmatic focus is on social-emotional learning, academic growth, and college prep. This past year, we strengthened our high school preparation for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in the SBU Academy. We expanded weekly boys’ and girls’ discussion groups to help them build crucial social-emotional skills. Our academic curriculum for high school students continued to evolve to put them in the best position for college and careers. Graduates of the most recent SBU Academy and College Access Program class are now attending Syracuse University, New York University, Fordham University, Smith College, Hobart & William Smith College, Baruch College, among many others.

Supports must be comprehensive, so we also continued to provide social work services and legal assistance to address needs that extend well beyond the field and the classroom. SBU managed more than 60 immigration cases this year, as demand for assistance increased, helping recently arrived youth and families navigate immigration challenges and assisting youth towards legal permanent residency and naturalization.

All these efforts, every program and every success story, build a better future for our youth and for our community. As you read through the following pages, please consider how you can support. South Bronx United only succeeds through the strength of our volunteers, donors, advocates, and champions! Join the South Bronx United community!

Sincerely,

2023 ANNUAL REPORT 2
SOUTH BRONX UNITED 3

South Bronx United opened the Clubhouse Café on January 8th, 2024. A social enterprise coffee shop, the Clubhouse Café is located at 812 River Avenue, just one block from Yankee Stadium, and is one of the only coffee shops in the Bronx’s Concourse neighborhood. It is an important part of SBU’s new Workforce Development Program, which helps participants build job skills, cultivate a potential career, and secure long-term employment through weekly workshops and on-the-job training.

In order to expand our community impact through employment, job training, and an excellent cafe experience, we partnered with New York City Colombian coffee roaster Devoción. The roaster has elevated the third wave coffee movement at its five locations throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn by selling the “freshest coffee” available in the U.S. going from farm-to-cup in as little as 10 days. As a certified B-Corp, Devoción’s dedication to supporting the local communities in which they operate aligns perfectly with South Bronx United’s goals for the Clubhouse Café. As part of Devocion’s partnership with South Bronx United, the brand provides substantial support including infrastructure, product, and training for staff and youth fellows.

Another key partner in the project is Harney & Sons, a family-led fine tea brand with an international reputation and a flagship shop in SoHo. Sweets and pastries are sourced from South Bronx bakeries Mottley Kitchen and Sully & Vanilla.

Our first employment cohort launched in July 2023 with 12 young women and men, including seven who participated in the Café Fellowship. They completed barista training at Devoción’s state-of-the-art education lab in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Drop in to the Clubhouse Café to meet the Fellows behind the counter and continue their training!

WHERE WE CALL HOME

Since the fall of 2022, the SBU Clubhouse has provided a safe space for youth participants during out-of-school time. A 3,000 square foot space that features a mini soccer pitch and a classroom, the SBU Clubhouse offers youth a place for pick-up soccer, homework help, and socializing with friends and teammates on a daily basis. Other activities include indoor soccer classes, tutoring, birthday parities, community events, and more.

MISSION AND VISION

South Bronx United’s mission is to use soccer as a tool for social change. We aim to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership so that they can succeed in high school, college, careers, the greater community, and beyond. We strive to promote educational achievement, health and wellness, and character development through activities on and off the soccer field and to unite a diverse group of individuals and an incredibly diverse community toward common positive goals.

SBU envisions a South Bronx community where:

… all youth have the support network they need to succeed in school, college, careers, and their community.

… all youth have access to educational, athletic, and college and career readiness resources.

… all immigrant families receive dignity, support, and opportunity.

SBU’s vision is to become:

… an international leader in a place-based approach to using sports for youth development.

… a citywide leader in expanding academic, college, and career opportunities for immigrant youth and their families.

… a community leader in youth development programs and services for at-risk and immigrant youth.

PROGRAM OTHER
Number of Youth Served

The SBU Academy provides a pathway from middle school to high school to college to careers for primarily first-generation and immigrant youth. The program keeps youth on track academically and supports their mental and physical wellbeing by combining competitive soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, and youth and family support services. All student-athletes train and compete with one of ten travel soccer teams while attending at least two afternoons or evenings of classroom-based programming each week. This includes after-school tutoring, boys and girls discussion groups, high school preparation, math and English groups, SAT preparation, and college prep mentoring for high school seniors. Throughout the year, youth participate in college trips, service projects, leadership activities, and team-building events often. During the summer, most participants attend the five-week, full-day Summer Soccer Scholars program.

The Student-Athlete Pathway

The Student-Athlete Pathway guides the SBU Academy program in the classroom and on the field. Programming is designed to support the development of specific, gradelevel academic, social-emotional, and athletic skills, as well as college and career preparation. For example, 9th graders work on developing advanced expository writing skills, a knowledge of high school requirements and the college process, self-identity and communication skills, and—on the field—agility, quickness, and communication with and without the ball and principles of attack and defense.

Play Proud

In 2023, SBU Academy student-athletes went on a special journey with our partners NJ/NY Gotham FC and its official supporters’ group Cloud 9. As part of Play Proud—Common Goal’s LGBTQ+ and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion educational program—SBU received training, resources, and support to develop inclusive policies and practices. Staff development weeks were held in Seattle and New Mexico alongside Gotham FC and Cloud 9 representatives. SBU staff returned to lead youth through important discussions, banner and tifo-making with Cloud 9, and on-the-field activities at Red Bull Arena before Gotham FC’s Pride Match. We continue to work together to understand and break down barriers within our game and our community to make the game more inclusive of LGBTQ+ youth.

Summer Soccer Scholars

82 SBU Academy student-athletes attended the Summer Soccer Scholars program last July and August. The full day program for rising 6th through 11th graders features five weeks of academics, soccer, team-building, exploration, and trips. Participants arrive daily at 9 am for morning meetings, competitions, and activities. They then take two required courses (Humanities, Math, or Health) and select an “SBUniversity Major”. Last year’s majors included Robotics, Sport Psychology, Digital Media, and Business. After lunch, students train on the soccer field or compete in a summerlong World Cup. The day ends at 3:30pm. On Fridays, participants head out on field trips to fun destinations including Governor’s Island, Rockland State Park, a Central Park scavenger hunt, the American Museum of Natural History, and Dorney Park. Interns from various colleges and summer fellowships complement staff to serve as assistant teachers, coaches, and mentors.

College Success Program

“I will be graduating as a social work major. The inspiration for picking my major actually came from SBU. Both Bridget and Jessica showed me the impact social work can bring to someone’s life and I wanted to do the same impactful work they do. At the moment, I am a Social Work intern at SBU. I’ve been learning more and more as time goes by thanks to Danielle and Miriam who’ve been trusting my abilities and expanding my perspectives. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the student athletes in the classrooms and seeing them out on the field too. It feels like a memory lane everytime I go to tutoring with them, and it pushes me to be someone they can feel supported by.”

GLOBAL YOUTH LEAGUE AND COLLEGE ACCESS

The Global Youth League (GYL) offers high school girls and boys the opportunity to compete in a Saturday soccer league, along with access to immigration screenings and social work services. The GYL is open to all teens from the Bronx and northern Manhattan with a particular focus on supporting immigrant youth.

170 Youth Served, Ages 14-19

For the 2022-2023 school year, GYL 11th and 12th graders were eligible to participate in weekly college prep workshops through the College Access Program. The Liverpool Community Foundation led the fall workshops through its Global Work Program curriculum. Students in the 10th grade were invited to attend monthly workshops. At the end of the school year, 11th graders were invited to complete the program in the 2023-2024 school year.

CLUBHOUSE CLASSES AND LEAGUES

Children of varied experience levels join for indoor soccer classes and 3v3 leagues at the SBU Clubhouse. Younger children learn the game, build hand-eye-foot coordination, and develop listening skills while older youth develop soccer skills in tight spaces. Most coaches are alumni of the SBU Academy or the Workforce Development Program.

302 Youth Served, Ages 2-15

SBU PRE-ACADEMY

Through the SBU Pre-Academy, boys and girls in 3rd through 5th grade compete on one of three travel soccer teams, training twice each week on the soccer field while developing as athletes and individuals. Teams compete within the greater New York City metropolitan area. The program offers preparation for youth prior to joining the SBU Academy, which starts in 6th grade. Staff also hold middle school preparation workshops and offer other family services.

SOUTH BRONX UNITED 19

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Recognizing that college is not the pathway for every young adult, SBU launched the new Workforce Development Program in July 2023. The program also serves SBU program participants and alumni who are pursuing a higher education degree and either need to work in order to support their studies and their family, are at risk of withdrawing from school, or hope to gain job skills that will set them up for success after their formal education ends.

A six-month fellowship, the Workforce Development Program offers young adults aged 16-24 a pathway to careers through job skills workshops, on-the-job training, and paid employment. Each cohort serves 10-20 fellows. The program will reach 20-40 young people annually.

Fellows meet weekly for classroom-based workshops on communication skills, resume writing, interviewing, the job search, and more, while pursuing one of two tracks: the Coaching Corps or the Café Fellows. After completing four weeks of pre-employment skills training and two weeks of hands-on training, SBU hires fellows as employees in its soccer programs or in the Clubhouse Café for the remainder of the fellowship.

Upon completion, every graduate is placed into a job, internship, or other career training program or continues full-time school enrollment. The program helps participants maintain or improve upon their long-term employment prospects.

Coaching Corps

• Train as soccer coaches and mentors.

• Gain a US Soccer Federation coaching license.

• Hired as coaches in SBU’s Community Schools sites, Recreational Soccer Programs, Clubhouse classes, and SBU Pre-Academy.

Café Fellows

• Train as baristas with Devoción Coffee and to work in the food, hospitality, and business sector.

• Gain a New York State Food Handler’s Certificate.

• Hired as employees in the Clubhouse Café.

IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES

South Bronx United is recognized by the Office of Legal Access Programs (OLAP) at the United States Department of Justice. This allows designated staff to practice immigration law and represent youth, families, and the community in proceedings before Immigration Court and the United States Citizenship and Immgration Services (USCIS). SBU’s Immigration Services Program Manager, a DOJ accredited representative, assesses the needs and eligibility of youth and their family members, manages immigration relief cases, provides legal services and referrals, and offers information to community members on relevant immigration issues. These steps are crucial to improving the lives of many youth and families and to helping youth on the path towards college and careers.

South Bronx United has supported youth and families in gaining work authorization, legal permanent residency, asylum, and citizenship, with a particular focus on cases for undocumented youth who are eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Staff also organizes Know Your Rights sessions and immigration clinics for youth and parents. SBU is a member of the Bronx Immigration Partnership and the New York Immigration Coalition.

“I joined the SBU Academy about a year after moving to the United States in 2014. I am extremely thankful to SBU for providing me with the chance to join this wonderful family, for helping me grow both academically and athletically, for helping me learn the language, and helping me a lot with finding the right college for me to attend. When I reached out to SBU regarding becoming a citizen of the United States, they immediately offered help there too. After a long process, I became a citizen in September [2023]! SBU had an important impact on both my personal development and my big accomplishment of becoming a US citizen.”

In 2023, SBU supported the applications of 3 new US Citizens and 4 new Legal Permanent Residents...
