LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Like the rest of the world, SBU spent 2021 learning to live with a pandemic that might be with us for years to come. At the start of the year, the SBU Academy was wrapping up a two-month stretch of remote tutoring and college prep, necessitated by New York City school closures. The academic program returned in mid-January to a hybrid structure with optional in-person attendance. With frigid temperatures, high winter COVID-19 infection rates, and no soccer to be played (snow was on the ground and indoor gyms were off-limits), fewer than one-third of participants elected to attend in person. Still, the vast majority—87 percent—joined their assigned academic session on a daily basis either remotely or in-person. In March, our Recreational Soccer Program kicked off its second post-pandemic season. The excitement of children and parents, relieved to have the athletic outlet back, was in the air. That spring, we also actively supported vaccination drives and brought a mobile vaccine clinic to our end-of-year barbeque. We hosted a vaccine information session for more than 70 youth and families with two respected bilingual doctors. To kick off the fall, we brought back our annual Health and Wellness Day which included providing vaccine and testing information to hundreds of families. On the field, individuals and teams dealt with health restrictions and quarantines, and again missed program traditions like overnight travel, college visits, and tournaments. Still, we ended the school year on a high note with an in-person and streamed celebration for graduating SBU Academy seniors. The fact that the pandemic consumed their last fifteen months of high school made it even more amazing that all 31 seniors graduated on time. All but one are now attending college: at New York University, Binghamton University, University at Albany, Fordham University, Baruch College, and more. Their success is no fluke, as proven by the current Class of 2022. Five current seniors received early college admissions in December, including one to Columbia University and another to Brown University. They are on track to become the first SBU Academy grads to attend those Ivy League schools. July brought not just heat and sunshine, but also the return of fully in-person, engaging summer programs. Our Summer Soccer Scholars program for rising 6th through 11th graders in the SBU Academy meant the return of academic classes (including in business, photojournalism, or coding) and field trips from Bear Mountain State Park to Governors Island. At the same time, SBU’s Summer Soccer Camp brought daily soccer fun to 145 elementary-age children over six weeks. By September, our programs felt relatively normal, despite occasional quarantines and a renewed push for youth to get vaccinated. Forty high school students visited Manhattanville College (our first college visit in two years), nearly all recreational soccer divisions reach capacity, and after-school programming resumed at three public schools. Immigration legal services picked back up culminating with the support for four new United States citizens, including three alumni and one parent. Through all of this, SBU still managed to launch new projects that will bring our core youth development and college access outcomes to more young people and give students a home-away-from-home as they recover from the worst of the pandemic. We started the GYL College Access Program in the fall with weekly college prep sessions for high school participants in the Global Youth League and for student-athletes attending a new school partner, International Community High School. We are also close to opening the new SBU Clubhouse, a 3,000 square foot space in our new offices just one block from Yankee Stadium. It will include a mini indoor soccer play area and a classroom to give youth a safe space to hang out, complete homework, and attend college prep workshops while expanding weekly soccer classes to more young children and families. By the time you read this, the SBU Clubhouse may already be our new home. In 2022, SBU continues to push ahead in expanding recreational opportunities, narrowing the growing academic achievement gap, and providing a comprehensive support network for at-risk, immigrant, and first-generation youth. To continue growing our impact through challenging times, we need more champions who can make a difference by spreading our mission and vision and by investing time or resources in South Bronx United. South Bronx United’s mission is to use soccer as a tool for social change. We began the year in conversation about how we can lead our community forward on important social issues. On MLK Day, SBU Academy students engaged remotely in activism discussions and projects with topics including school equity, community budgeting, the PlayProud initiative and LGBTQ+ inclusion.

In April, we hosted a vaccine information session with an infectious disease doctor from Mt. Sinai Hospital and a family doctor from Montefiore Hospital, both bilingual. Then, SBU partnered with NYC Health + Hospitals to host a vaccination site at SBU’s end of year BBQ.

At our 9th Annual Literacy Day, all participants ages 4-14 in our Recreational Soccer Program joined soccer-themed reading circles, and were able to take home a new book!

The spring season culminated with our inaugural PlayProud Tournament. Mixed squads comprised of players from the SBU Academy girls and boys U15-U19 teams competed round-robin style, with time between matches filled with affirming and educational discussion about how we can all help build a community that is inclusive of everyone.

We celebrated the SBU Academy Class of 2021 in June. Each of the 31 graduates found a way to adapt to a new normal and achieve their goals, rising to colleges across the region and beyond—from Baruch College to Fordham University to New York University to Binghamton University.

In July, we finally returned with fully in-person programming both in the classroom and on the field. SBU Academy student-athletes returned for five weeks of the full-day Summer Soccer Scholars program, and elementary students had the opportunity to attend morning soccer camp.

Our annual Health and Wellness Day returned to launch our fall Recreational Soccer season. Local partners provided families information on everything from the healthy produce provided by local hydroponic farms to COVID vaccines to local planting initiatives. Teqball and other fitness activities ensured there was fun for the whole family.

We launched the Global Youth League College Access program this fall, expanding college prep resources to more SBU student-athletes than ever before. The program includes monthly workshops for 10th graders, weekly college prep workshops for 11th graders, and individual college guidance counseling for 12th graders.

It was an unforgettable joy to have the extended SBU family convene in person for our 11th Annual Benefit. Luis Miguel Echegaray (CBS Sports) returned as host, and we honored SBU Alumnus Alseny Barry. It was our most successful fundraising event ever, ensuring that we can continue to expand our programming and services in 2022.

THE SBU ACADEMY The SBU Academy provides a pathway from middle school to high school to college to careers for primarily first-generation and immigrant youth. The program keeps youth on track academically and supports their mental and physical wellbeing by combining competitive soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, and youth and family support services. All student-athletes train and compete with one of ten travel soccer teams, while attending at least two afternoons or evenings of classroom-based programming each week. This includes after-school tutoring, boys and girls discussion groups, high school preparation, math and English groups, SAT preparation, and college prep mentoring for high school seniors. Throughout the year, youth participate in college trips, service projects, leadership activities, and team-building events often. During the summer, most participants attend the five-week, full-day Summer Soccer Scholars program.

SBU Academy high school students and alumni have the opportunity to work or volunteer as coaches and referees in the Recreational Soccer Program and at SBU Community Schools sites. The most committed students can join the Coaching Corps, a year-long fellowship that provides in-depth training and experience for a select cohort of young leaders. Coaching Corps Fellows prepare to work as youth coaches and mentors through monthly training sessions, practical experience serving as assistant coaches in an SBU program, individualized coaching support, U.S. Soccer coach licensing courses, and the option to be certified as referees. They also receive a $1,200 program stipend. Due to COVID-19 related afterschool program cancellations, SBU worked with only one fellow during the 2020-2021 school year. Five fellows started in the 20212022 year. To date, 18 young people have completed the Coaching Corps Fellowship.

Summer Soccer Scholars After being cancelled due to the pandemic in 2020, 82 SBU Academy student-athletes attended the Summer Soccer Scholars program last July and August. The full day program for rising 6th through 11th graders features five weeks of academics, soccer, team-building, exploration, and trips. Participants arrive daily at 9 am to attend an elective class (e.g. chess, art, cooking, fitness), one block of math (e.g. World Cup Math, Money Math), one block of humanities (e.g. Cultural Storytelling, Sports in Society), and a “major” (e.g. coding, business, or photojournalism). After lunch, students train on the soccer field or compete in a summer-long World Cup. The day ends at 3:30pm. On Fridays, participants head out on field trips to fun destinations including Governor’s Island, Bear Mountain State Park, Coney Island, Rye Playland, and Dorney Park. College interns from across the country complement existing staff to serve as assistant teachers, coaches, and mentors for participating youth.

They have additionally shown me how to be part of a team and the importance of collaborating and supporting others. Being part of the SBU community has also allowed me to meet and establish relationships with many great people - coaches, mentors, tutors, and staff - who have helped me develop personally and academically. I would not be the person I am today, with the incredible future that lies before me, without SBU. The club has always been there for me whenever I needed anything, not just with school or soccer. It has given me so much, and shown me how contributing to one’s community can really change lives. I look forward to giving back in the future and helping others in the same way that all the people at SBU have helped me.”

Youth Profile: Jennifer Oliveros The daughter of immigrants from Ecuador, Jennifer Oliveros was driven to succeed in the classroom and on the soccer field. She started school in the South Bronx speaking only Spanish. At age 12, Jennifer found South Bronx United and joined the SBU Academy. In addition to starring on her soccer team, she served as a referee and coach in SBU’s Recreational Soccer Program. The past two years presented new challenges for her as she navigated school and family life during a pandemic. Through the end of her junior year and entirety of senior year, she had to wake up at 6 a.m. every morning to do her own schoolwork before helping her 9-year-old and 4-year-old brothers. Last June, Jennifer celebrated the end of a school year unlike any other with other SBU Academy Class of 2021 graduates at an in-person Senior Celebration ceremony. She became the first person in her family to graduate high school. Now, she is one of two SBU Academy graduates this year with full scholarships to attend New York University, where she hopes to study engineering.

RECREATIONAL SOCCER The Recreational Soccer Program provides opportunities for children to learn and play soccer in a fun, developmental environment over 33 weeks of the year. The Saturday program is held at three sites in the South Bronx: Macombs Dam Park, Mullaly Park, and Patterson Park. Open after-school sessions give children additional chances to play and train. 712 Youth Served, Ages 4-16

SBU COMMUNITY SCHOOLS SBU offers after-school programming for students at three South Bronx schools: Boys Prep Elementary School, Girls Prep Elementary School, and P.S. 218 through the WHEDco after-school program. Programming is held up to three afternoons per week. Every school site is staffed by at least one head coach and a young leader, an alum or high school student from the SBU Academy who serves as assistant coach through the Coaching Corps fellowship. Due to the pandemic, most schools canceled after-school programs for the 2020-2021 school year, but SBU coaches did hold remote after-school soccer sessions at Girls Prep. The programs returned on-site to all three schools in October 2021. 105 Youth Served, Ages 7-12

SUMMER SOCCER CAMP After a year off, SBU brought back its six-week, half-day summer soccer camp in July. The camp gives elementaryaged children the opportunity to learn soccer and play in a fun, developmental environment. The camp is open to young players of all levels. 134 Youth Served, Ages 5-12

GLOBAL YOUTH LEAGUE The Global Youth League (GYL) offers high school girls and boys the opportunity to compete in a Saturday soccer league, along with access to immigration screenings and social work services. The GYL is open to all teens from the Bronx and northern Manhattan with a particular focus on supporting immigrant youth. Partnering organizations included Adlai E. Stevenson High School, CITC Saturday Night Lights, and Rooklyn International. 146 Youth Served, Ages 14-19

SBU PRE-ACADEMY Through the SBU Pre-Academy, boys and girls in 3rd through 5th grade compete on one of three travel soccer teams, training twice each week on the soccer field while developing as athletes and individuals. Teams compete within the greater New York City metropolitan area. The program offers preparation for youth prior to joining the SBU Academy, which starts in 6th grade. Staff also hold middle school preparation workshops and offer other family services. 38 Youth Served, Ages 8-11

GYL COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAM

Program enrollment is open to high school students who are in the Global Youth League or attend International Community High School, a new school partner located in Mott Haven. The program launched with 24 participants this fall.

IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES South Bronx United is recognized by the Office of Legal Access Programs (OLAP) at the United States Department of Justice. This allows designated staff to practice immigration law and represent youth, families, and the community in proceedings before Immigration Court and the United States Citizenship and Immgration Services (USCIS). SBU’s Immigration Services Program Manager, a DOJ accredited representative, assesses the needs and eligibility of youth and their family members, manages immigration relief cases, provides legal services and referrals, and offers information to community members on relevant immigration issues. These steps are crucial to improving the lives of many youth and families and to helping youth on the path towards college and careers. South Bronx United has supported youth and families in gaining work authorization, legal permanent residency, asylum, and citizenship, with a particular focus on cases for undocumented youth who are eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Staff also organizes Know Your Rights sessions and immigration clinics for youth and parents. SBU is a member of the Bronx Immigration Partnership and the New York Immigration Coalition.
