Merry Christmas To Everyone T here is no other time of the year that even comes close to being similar.

Whether you celebrate it as a religious holy day, a non religious holiday or both, Christmas should still be kept in our hearts and celebrated – it is just too special a time to go without. To children, the Christmas season is magical. It’s a time in their lives when memories are made that will live forever. Yes, it’s a fact, children are brought up being told about people that may or may not exist. But does it really hurt anyone for them to have that handful of years believing in such colorful and good characters as Santa and Mrs. Claus, or cute helpful little elves, Ok, possibly the Grinch might bring on some bad dreams and vibes, so maybe some can do without that guy. But even when we become adults, those

Christmas memories; especially if they are caught in photos or on video will bring smiles to our faces. It’s one of the good things in life; happy times to cherish forever and pass on to new family members as they arrive and grow.

The Brilliantly lit Christmas trees and neighborhood homes, the peaceful and Heavenly Nativity scenes, the parades, the special meals and desserts, the sweet smell of pine and sugar treats, the gifts, the music, the movies we look forward to year after year, the time spent with family and good friends and the image of Santa everywhere you turn adds to the tradition that so many people hold so near and dear to their hearts and souls. That it was all started with the birth of the Baby Jesus; Son of God more than 2000 years ago is the reason for the season and makes

this time of year not only festive but also sacred to the now more than 2.6 billion Christians around the world and certainly to the people of South Boston. This is also a special and sacred time for people of the Jewish faith; where family and friends gather to share each other’s company and love and honor God as well. People of all faiths and no faith are always welcome to share in this special time and it’s a beautiful thing. From all of us here at South Boston Today to our friends and neighbors, have a Merry Christmas.

May this year bring good tidings to one and all and may the coming new year bring happiness, good health, prosperity and stability. And of course, to our friends of the Jewish Faith, we wish you all the same and hope that you enjoyed a very Happy Hanukkah. May God Bless you all.

Don’t Be Afraid To Say The Word Christmas John Ciccone

ach year, on this very week, this column brings up a topic that shows itself to be an issue with some. It’s the reluctance, or in some cases even the fear of uttering the word ‘Christmas’. Although the number of Americans and even some people locally who hesitate to say the word Christmas for fear of offending others has largely diminished, there are still some of those folks around.

Don’t get me wrong. In America, we are blessed to be able to say whatever we please.

Our Constitution guarantees us that right; a right found in very few other places. In past years, saying the word was thought to be insensitive to those who don’t celebrate the holiday/holy day. Wishing people a Merry Christmas was frowned upon by the more liberal leaning among the population and it was strongly suggested that more generic greetings should be the new way to go. Using ‘safe’ terms like ‘Season’s Greetings’ or ‘Happy Holidays’ to others was said to be required in the effort to not hurt the feelings of some of the Christmas haters out there. And for the most part, those days are gone. I mean, seriously, how sensitive and fragile must someone be to take offense when someone thinks enough of them to take the time to wish you a Merry Christmas even if you don’t celebrate it. And yet, there a few still caught up in the past who don’t dare use the dreaded greeting of Merry Christmas. In a way it’s funny, but

also a bit sad. So to those few still walking on eggshells over how to greet others during this ‘Christmas Season’, let me try to ease your concerns.

Christmas was designated to be a federal holiday in the year 1870 by the Congress of the United States. As a federal holiday, it’s perfectly legal to put up Christmas decorations; even those of a religious nature in public buildings, in schools and in and on any government property. When officials tell us that doing so violates the rule of ‘separation of church and state’ as found in the US Constitution, they are either lying or just don’t know what they’re talking about.

Nowhere in the Constitution is ‘separation of church and state’ even mentioned. You can look it up. So legally, images of Santa Claus and even Nativity Scenes are legal any place in America. And as we state in this paper each year, when it comes to Christmas trees, it’s safe to call them exactly that. Those who still worry about being politically correct or ‘WOKE’ as it’s called now, you can relax. You don’t have to avoid the actual name by saying ‘holiday tree’ or winter solstice bush, festive shrub or calling them just trees. Remember, and I repeat, if it’s a lit up, decorated evergreen tree on display in December, it’s a Christmas tree.

Again, people are free to call it whatever they choose. But when you call it anything else to avoid saying Christmas tre out of fear or peer pressure, you sound, well, kind of silly,

maybe even a bit wimpy.

The point to be made is this: Celebrate the Christmas season the way YOU want to celebrate it. If you choose to do so generically that’s fine too. Not everyone is religious.

Or if you don’t want to celebrate it at all, well, go for it.

But if all the surveys are right, the overwhelming number of Americans prefer the traditional way to observe Christmas. Most asked will tell you that they love to see the lights, the movies and decorations

and the music; even those songs that get over played each year. They enjoy going to the pageants, the plays and even seeing the carolers out on the streets; a tradition that seems to be coming back. But what you might not want to do is to let others who don’t like the Christmas season discourage you or pressure you to not. Don’t allow those who for whatever reason feel the need put a damper on something most of us look forward to – or ruin it for everyone else.

Jon Keller’s Political Crystal Ball For 2026 “What’s past is prologue,” wrote Shakespeare in “The Tempest,” and who are we to argue with him? So, with the events of 2025 in mind, here is an educated guess at what’s in store for Massachusetts in the year to come, not to be used as a guide for wagering: JANUARY: Gov. Maura Healey delivers her State of the Commonwealth Address. In a tribute to her friend and Celtic legend Bob Cousy’s jersey number, it contains fourteen basketball analogies, each more tortured than the last, including a reference to her troika of GOP challengers as “threesecond violations.”

FEBRUARY: Pool camera cutaways during President Trump’s State of the Union speech show members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation expressing their contempt in creative ways. Rep. Katherine Clark is seen cradling an abacus and moving a bead each time the president lies.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren wears a crocheted beer bucket hat ringed with cans of Michelob Light, from which she chugs every time Clark moves a bead. Warren is helped from the chamber by aides halfway through and receives treatment for alcohol poisoning.

over the state’s future manifests in a record primary election turnout on September 8, as voters shake off Labor Day distractions and swarm the polls. Unfortunately, the election was inexplicably held on September 1.

MARCH: The stage at Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s State of the City speech is adorned with blown-up photos of State Senators Karen Spilka and Nick Collins with blood-red circle-and-slash overlay, and a mammoth skyscraper of paper next to the podium representing the 78,384 votes she received. During the event, cars belonging to City Councillors Ed Flynn and Erin Murphy, critics of the mayor, are booted, towed and set on fire.

JUNE: The Harvard Commencement, delayed from late May due to four straight days of torrential rain, is finally held in stripped-down form due to university-wide budget cuts. In place of the usual pomp and in an effort to raise badly needed funds, the graduates engage in carnival-style games, including Whack-A-Tent, a Larry Summers dunk tank, and a raffle to win stuffed and mounted body parts, courtesy of Harvard Medical School.

APRIL: During the 130th running of the Boston Marathon, ICE agents are pelted with half-full hard-seltzer cans as they herd the Kenyan frontrunners into a police van along the route. Addressing an adoring crowd at the state GOP Convention in Worcester later in the month, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons defends the roundup as a key step in their “Make Sure America Finishes First” campaign.

JULY: Riot police are called to the Hatch Shell on Independence Day when disputes over whether we are celebrating America’s Semiguincentennial, Bisesquicentennial, Sestercentennial or Quarter Millenium erupt in vicious brawls.

Dozens are arrested and charged with assault and battery with a picnic basket.

NOVEMBER: Massachusetts voters turn election day into a sweeping referendum on President Trump, returning all Democratic incumbents by wide margins and ejecting most of the remaining Republican incumbents. The only GOP candidate to crack 40% is Senate nominee John Deaton, running on the slogan: “I hate Trump worse than Maura Healey.”

AUGUST: An exchange in the first televised GOP gubernatorial debate goes viral when the three candidates bicker over who hates Healey more.

Brian Shortsleeve: “I was there first!”

Mike Kennealy: “You don’t even know what real hate is!”

Mike Minogue: “Who am I? Why am I here?”

DECEMBER: Mayor Wu refiles her tax-classification bill for the fifteenth time with five minutes left in the legislative session. The next morning, she denounces the “do-nothing” Senate at a press event featuring a photo of Senate President Spilka’s home, egged and festooned with toilet paper. Says Wu: “It’s time for grown-up leadership.”

MAY: At the state Democratic Convention, Sen. Ed Markey wins the party nomination by acclamation after performing 100 Marine push-ups on stage and shattering the world record for the mile in a jaw-dropping jaunt around the DCU Center. “Let’s see Seth Moulton top that!” declares a heaving, sweat-soaked Markey.

SEPTEMBER: Public anxiety

OCTOBER: The soaring cost of living and down economy prompt scores of parents statewide to forego new Halloween costumes for their kids. Instead, they modify last year’s most popular getup, the T-Rex Dinosaur, into the Tax-HikeO’Saur, a dinosaur wearing only a barrel with its pockets turned inside out and a tax bill protruding from the rear.

Senate Tax Relief Bills Advance Testimony Being Taken

wo Senate proposals aimed at delivering property tax relief to homeowners are currently being reviewed by the Senate Committee on Ways and Means after advancing in the Senate last week.

S.1933, An Act to Prevent Property Tax Bill Shocks, filed by Senator Will Brownsberger, would allow municipalities to phase in significant residential tax increases over several quarters and provide targeted relief to seniors, low-income residents, and others most vulnerable to residential property tax increases.

S.1935, An Act Relative to Municipal Tax Relief, filed by Senator Nick Collins, would authorize municipalities to issue uniform rebates to homeowners using surplus revenue. This would provide immediate relief to residential property owners without undermining fiscal stability.

The City of Boston’s budget has grown 26% over the last four years.

With the City refusing to reel in spending, they have decided to increase taxes on commercial property owners and homeowners. Boston

property tax increases for 2026 have been set for homeowners at the following rates: $12.40 per $1,000 in value for residential and $26.96 per $1,000 in value for commercial. Both represent an unnecessary increase over last year.

According to Evan Horowitz, Executive Director of the Center for State Policy Analysis at Tufts University, the City is “choosing to raise tax rates and pretending that it’s not a choice at all, that they’re being forced to do it and someone should rescue them.”

Furthermore, while the City continues to raise taxes on residential and commercial property owners, they are currently sitting on over $552 million in reserves.

The Senate bills are focused on providing relief to residential property owners to mitigate municipal property tax increases on homeown-

ers by leveraging the City’s substantial taxpayer reserves.

The goal of the Senate bills is to provide municipalities with the tools to provide real relief for residential taxpayers without harming small businesses or putting the economy at risk. With affordability on everyone’s minds, increasing the tax burden unnecessarily on homeowners and businesses to perpetuate exponential and irresponsible spending increases is unacceptable.

The Senate Committee on Ways and Means will receive written testimony on legislation related to municipal property taxes beginning Thursday, December 11, 2025, through Monday, December 29, 2025, at 5 p.m. The public is encouraged to participate by submitting written testimony via email to SenateCommittee.Ways&Means@masenate.gov.

Volunteers help flip the switch for annual 31 Nights of Light Celebration

he top of the Prudential Center Tower will shine red in honor of the American Red Cross as part of a monthlong celebration of Massachusetts charities and nonprofit organizations.

On Tuesday, Red Cross of Massachusetts volunteers will flip the switch to light up Boston’s skyline as part of Prudential Center’s 17th Annual 31 Nights of Light program. The top of Prudential Tower will beam red in support of the Red Cross mission.

Joining Red Cross CEO Holly Grant to flip the switch are one of Red Cross MA’s oldest volunteers as well as one of the youngest. John “Mr. Jack” Kavanaugh, 88, is a military veteran who volunteers with the Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces team and also serves as a Mass Care Chief for the Disaster Cycle Services team.

Anna-mary Geist has been running Red Cross blood drives since her son Sam was 2 years old. Sam needed multiple blood transfusions to survive three open heart surgeries – the first when he was only a few hours old. Now 16, Sam advocates for blood donation in his community and helps his mom recruit and register blood donors.

The 31 Nights of Light program was introduced in 2009 to celebrate local Boston-area organizations and draw attention to the great work they do in Boston and beyond. Utilizing a state-ofthe-art LED lighting system, the top of Prudential Tower will change color daily to honor its 28 community partners.

Christmas connects us not only to our own family stories, but to moments across history when this holy season shaped hearts, nations, and even the course of the world.

1222 – St. Francis Brings the Nativity to Life Saint Francis of Assisi, once born into wealth, chose a life of humility and service. Dark Days by Kevin Devlin Book review by John Joseph Fahey

L

ocal author Kevin Devlin has recently released his latest work, this time a dystopian novella, titled Dark Days. The premise revolves two opposing forces --- moving the conflict forward --- not only between the political groups, Patriot Cause and the New Americans but the book’s narrative unfolds into a scenario where the reader realizes how easily political (and individual) freedom can be so clearly compromised.

The current release is timely, as certainly there is no dearth in the country’s public arena concerning impassioned discussions regarding philosophy and viewpoints among the republic’s electorate. What Dark Days achieves is a striking illustration of war torn crusaders ever loyal to their cause in a country that has descended into chaos.

2023 – Ukraine Moves Christmas Ukraine officially shifted Christmas observance to December 25, a powerful expression of cultural and spiritual

independence during a season of hardship.

2023 – Bethlehem’s Quiet Christmas Amid war, Bethlehem scaled back celebrations, offering a poignant reminder that the first Christmas entered a world marked by suffering—and brought hope into darkness.

2024 – Notre Dame Reopens Notre Dame Cathedral reopened during Advent, symbolizing restoration, perseverance, and the enduring call to worship.

The Greatest Christmas Event of All Above all, Christmas marks God’s greatest gift: the birth of Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, humanity was offered redemption and hope.

That holy night in Bethlehem changed history forever.

Devlin’s audience will also note that the battle between the book’s factions is not in an obscure land – miles away on unfamiliar territory – but rather here, in this country – more precisely on terrain that will be known to many readers as the author himself is local. Devlin grew up in the Dorchester/South Boston area and one might be acquainted with several of the character’s names or settings that are used in this realistic and sometimes vivid depiction of armed rebellion.

An armed uprising between those who want to protect the nation from those advocating revolutionary change – a chilling theme, but certainly plausible – as one versed in current events can appreciate. Those belonging to the Patriot Cause – the protagonists, are at odds – both politically and tangibly with the antagonists referred to as the New Americans. But, however one might agree or disagree with the issues at stake, the underlining cause for tension and encounter is, and can be argued as being paramount to nation-wide dissention, is the unwillingness to respect fellow citizen’s beliefs. We find the following quote particularly relevant when the

character Sergeant James “Jumpin” Donnelly asks a member of the New Americans why it was acceptable to kill civilians: “Murdered because they oppose your views. Because they don’t believe in your idea of creating a new America to replace the old America? An old America, allegedly unworthy of existing, corrupt and in need of being dismantled and destroyed. Is that their answer to resolve our differences?”

Dark Days is thought provoking and rich in dialogue – Devlin’s characters providing good insight into the psyche of not only the zealous caught up with their cause of revolt – and those who contest it. Dark Days is a 140 page concisely written story, divided among thirty two chapters with Prologue and Epilogue and encompasses credible interchange between combatants respective to dissention and polarization of the country – conversations that one could agree are certainly probable! One need only need look at the political arena within the last several years to realize this.

In his Prologue, Devlin sets the stage for the chronicle; Law was replaced by lawlessness, and “Fear bred violence and disregard for

the welfare of others. Civility and mutual respect were under attack.

Only insults were allowed to flourish in the public square. No solutions to resolve problems and settle differences were put on the table to be amicably discussed and possibly implemented.” This is what precipitated a national uprising; this is what caused society to devolve into one of chaos and mistrust – and this is what Dark Days so persuasively cautions!

I

t’s only a few days away! This is the time when everyone is focused on last minute items, so I would recommend some or all of the following ..

Christmas dinners typically start and/or finish with something sparkling. Sharfenburger California Sparkling Wine, Blanc de Noir,

NV,($22.99) provides a great choiceon the nose, there are notes of mountain flowers, citrus zest and a whiff of forest floor. On the palate, lemon and lime flavors combine with tangerines and raspberry essence all wrapped up in a pleasant finish.

Rive de Malva, St. Joseph, Rhone Rouge,2020, ($29.99) is made in the northernmost Appellation d’Origine Controlee in the Rhone Valley. It presents distinctive aromas of spices and peppercorns, as well as earthy undertones. On the palette, it breaks down into notes of cinnamon and cloves, giving a full, rich mouthfeel. Not surprisingly, the finish is long and very rich.

This is one red wine that will enhance every bite of your Turkey.

Jean Louis Chave,” Mon Coeur” Cotes du Rhone, ($22.99) is one that presents very distinctive notes of peppercorns and spices on the nose, while the palette has a fullbodied mouthfeel that’s best enjoyed

with swirling as opposed to sipping.

As with all whites from this region, the finish is notably long and full.

The Chave family have been making wine since 1481 and have said that the wines of today are changed little from that time.

The Rhone River itself begins in the Alps and flows 515 miles, draining into the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhone Valley itself is made up primarily of steep hills, cut deeply by the Rhone glacier over 4,000,000 years ago. Like Sicily, the Greeks were the first to grow grapes here, but when France was known as Gaul under the Romans, winemaking became much more organized. Many of the villages and communes of today have the same place names that were given by the Romans. Sainte Cosme Cotes du Rhone, ($21.99) is one of them. On the nose and palette, there are distinctive notes of blackberries, plums and violets. The

mouthfeel is fresh and fruity, and the finish is pleasant and juicy.

Cotes du Rhone Classique, Domaine de la Présidente, ($37.99) is one of the older estates in the region, having first made wine in 1650.

On the nose, there are vibrant notes of Elderberry and Blackberry, while the palette also presents those, along with a tinge of butterscotch and salty caramel. You should try this one with holiday appetizers.

Last but not least, Henri Model, Cotes du Rhone Villages Blanc, Vaudun, ($31.99). This is a very structured white, made primarily with Viognier and a little Carcassonne.

A great nose of mountain flowers and raspberries that go directly to the palette. The finish, while shorter than reds, is refreshing and fruity.

I think that any (or all) of these will add another layer of holiday cheer to you and yours.

New England Council Celebrates 100th Anniversary

A

century ago, business and government leaders gathered in New England and formed a regional organization dedicated to promoting economic development and a high quality of life in the region.

At the time, a trend was developing where companies were seeking more opportunities for economic growth outside of New England. A group of concerned businesses and the six New England governors met to consider a collective strategy to grow the economy of the region, promote its value and unique strengths and capabilities, and enhance the quality of life.

The New England Council was formed.

Today, the New England Council remains a leading voice for economic development and a powerful center of collaboration and cooperation among business, government, and community leaders and organizations.

Recently, celebrating the 100th anniversary, more than 1,800 gathered for the Council’s Centennial Celebration and presentation of awards to individuals making significant contributions to the economy and quality of life in New England.

“The history of the Council is extraordinary and is articulated in so many

ways by the many accomplishments and advances the region has made over decades,” said James Brett, president and CEO of The New England Council.

“One hundred years ago, the organization’s founders realized they could accomplish much more with a collaborative effort focused on a common mission. Our membership represents every New England state, and all industries participate in a variety of programs and initiatives to advance the sectors. From financial services to health care, higher education, technology and more, the region excels and is often looked to as a model for inter-state cooperation.”

This year, the Council presented several special new awards, recognizing prominent leaders for their extraordinary contributions to New England’s economy and quality of life. The Council presented its Centennial Award to Sandy M. Edgerley, Co-Founder of The ‘Quin House and a local philanthropic leader who has supported many worthy causes in the Greater Boston area. The Founders Award was presented to Maine Governor Janet Mills in recognition of the Council’s founding in Maine in 1925.

And the Legacy Award was given to Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Decking The Halls With The Annual Condon Community Center Senior Christmas Party 2025!

T

he Condon Community Council hosted its annual Christmas party on Tuesday at St. Peter Lithuanian Church Hall, bringing together South Boston seniors for an afternoon filled with food, music, and holiday cheer. The festive crowd arrived dressed in Christmas attire and enjoyed a delicious luncheon provided

by Alfredo’s, complete with coffee and dessert.

The hall was filled with music and laughter as raffles were called and Christmas songs were sung, showcasing the strong sense of community and togetherness that defines our neighborhood. Musical entertainment was provided by Al and Brendan Gavaghan of Celtic Law. The duo also shared the microphone with Theresa and Helen, who delighted the crowd with their own performances. St. Peter Academy (SPA) were special invited guests who sang their own written songs, complete with musical instruments!

A favorite tradition returned when attendees requested the “Macarena,” prompting Emcee Mark McGonagle and friends to lead the dance floor.

Members of the audience quickly joined in, followed by the Twist, drawing cheers and applause. South Boston’s well-known dance spirit was proudly on display.

Special guests stopped by to extend holiday wishes to local seniors, including BPD (C-6) Captain Conroy, Sgt. Fitton, and Community Service Officers Ayesha Lawton and David O’Connor, who have consistently supported the event.

The Condon Community Council continues to honor its seniors by hosting three major annual events, St. Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, made possible by dedicated volunteers from the Condon Community Center. Special thanks were extended to Kathy, Barbara, Deb and Kay, for their continued commitment.

The celebration concluded with the crowd singing “Southie Is My Home Town,” a fitting end to a joyful afternoon. Merry Christmas to all, and best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year!

ho were the shepherds that were present at the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem has long been a story that has fascinated the masses over the centuries. Even today, in 2025, and with all the nonstop talk of viruses and politics, this ancient question remains a topic of discussion with theologians and historians; especially during this time of year.

Over 2000 years ago, some of the most notable people present after the Baby Jesus was born were the humble shepherds tending to their flocks.

These shepherds of the time were considered to be of little importance; almost lowly as far as most people living then were concerned. The shepherds were wandering nomads thought to not even have dwellings to live in but rather actually lived out in the fields with their flocks.

This was a lifestyle that existed long before the birth of Christ and still to this day, in parts of the Middle East, nomadic shepherds can be found living pretty much the way they did at the time of the birth of the Savior.

These shepherds have traditionally been without means or influence yet God chose them over lawyers and scribes and wealthy landowners and other people of great wealth to send

As the story of the first Christmas goes, an Angel appeared to the shepherds who were at first terrified at the sight of the Angel. The Angel then said to the shepherds “Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you. You will find a baby wrapped in cloths lying in a manger”. Then other Angels appeared and helped reassure the shepherds. When the Angels had left them, the shepherds decided to go to Bethlehem to see for themselves, this event that had happened. And they did and found it to be true. They then went in all directions; far and wide to spread the story of the birth of the Baby Jesus, the Son of God. It has long been debated why it was shepherds that were chosen by God to be the first to receive the announcement of the birth by the Angels. But most believe that it is because God values all people, no matter what their status in life and chose the most humble and unassuming to be blessed with the good news first.

Santa Never Disappoints in South Boston!

tate Rep. David Biele held his 7th Annual Toy Drive and Fundraiser last Monday night at Amrhein’s. Stacks of toys for all ages were donated and on display while guests enjoyed a bit of merriment, conversa-

tion and cheer. For the past couple of weeks, the Thomas J. Fitzgerald VFW Post 561 had been serving as Santa’s workshop in South Boston.

On December 19th, in the pouring rain, Representative Biele and his

team of elves delivered upwards of over 1,100 toys and giftcards, up from 1,000 in 2024, to children throughout South Boston. Santa had help from partners and sponsors community wide. A big shout out to

Rep. Biele and his team as well as the elves for helping Santa fill the need in our neighborhood for the past 7 years and making sure every child in South Boston has a toy to open this holiday season. Love this community!

CYF Tynan Community Center joined with Tynan Elementary School Kids for a Holiday Party featuring the big guy himself, Santa Claus. Pizza, chicken

fingers and popcorn were a hit while the children lined up to await their turn to tell Santa their Christmas wishes. Santa’s elves gave each boy and girl a gift because they were on the

nice list, of course.

Miss Barbie Loftus of Homespun Originals of Southieand Mrs. Michelle (Tynan Librarian) were invited to bring joy in craft making to both

parents and children. They did not disappoint. The craft was making magnetic tile ornaments with stickers, jewels and glitter. This craft engaged all ages and was fun!

South Boston Catholic Academy News

Merry Christmas to All from All of us at SBCA!

J

ust before our Christmas Break, the 6th Grade students at South Boston Catholic Academy did a marvelous job reenacting the Nativity Scene for all the students and teachers at SBCA. The Nativity Scene, also known as a Crèche or Manger Scene, is a visual representation of the birth of Jesus Christ. It typically includes key figures such as Mary, St. Joseph, and the infant Jesus, along with shepherds, angels, and the Magi (aka…the 3 wise men/kings/ astrologers, who followed the Star of Bethlehem to find and honor the new king, baby Jesus). The scene is often set in a stable or cave, reflecting the humble circumstances of Jesus’ birth. St. Francis of Assisi started the

tradition of Nativity Scenes in 1223 to help people experience the wonder of the first Christmas. A Special Thank you, to all our talented 6th Graders, for their adaptation of Jesus’ birth and to their Teacher, Ms. Faith Smith, for preparing and directing them through the different scenes of this Nativity Reenactment. Afterwards our Pastor, Father Robert Casey and Principal, Dr. Helenann Civian thanked the 6th Graders for doing such a wonderful job! Then, Father Casey, accompanied by our Music Teacher, Mr. Carlo Bunyi, on keyboard, led us into a Christmas singalong with a medley of our favorite Christmas songs, some of which the children wonderfully sang at their Christmas Concert.

Then Father Casey gave us all a Special Christmas Blessing and along with Dr. Civian, wished everyone a Blessed and Merry Christmas!

Early this past week, the students in our Early Childhood Program truly got their families and teachers into the Christmas Spirit, by doing such a fantastic job singing at their EEC Christmas Concert. Their songs included…

I’m a Little Snowman, Jingle Bells, Silent Night and We wish you a Merry Christmas. Then the Early Childhood Program Director, Mrs. Kara Murphy, complimented and thanked all the K0 and K1 students for doing such a great job singing and thanked the students’ families, teachers, aides, their Music Teacher, Mr. Carlo Bunyi and EEC Aide, Mr. Ryan McLean, for helping the children prepare for their Very Special Christmas Concert.

St. Peter Academy December Happenings

W

ow, December has been a wonderful month at St. Peter Academy! We packed the Ironworkers Hall for our annual Breakfast with Santa event!

The students did an amazing job with their holiday songs! Thank you to the Ironworkers for the use of their beautiful space, Amrhein’s Restaurant for the donation of their delicious breakfast for 250 people, Olga’s Kafe for her yummy coffee and Blasi’s Kitchen and Bar for the festive libations!

Grades K1 through 5 went on two field trips in December. We took the MBTA to both locations, Wheelock Theater for the play Annie and The Strand Theater for the Nutcracker. We packed in the culture for December!

Our students joined forces with the Condon Community Center for the Senior Christmas Luncheon at St. Peter’s Church Hall. The elementary division walked down with our musical instruments and entertained the seniors with our Holidays Songs! It was a great day! Thank you, Barbara

Our amazing staff volunteered their time on a Saturday evening and decorated our school stoop and served Hot Cocoa for the Annual South Boston Neighborhood House Stoop Stroll.

Our school looked magical.

The Real Legend of Santa Claus T he Legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk name St. Nicholas It’s believed that Nicolas was born sometime around 280 AD, in Patyra, near Myra in an area close to modern day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became The subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth; which was said to be substantial and travelled the countryside helping the poor and the sick.

One of the best known stories about St. Nicholas is the time he helped 3 very poor sisters from being sold into prostitution and slavery by their father by providing them with a diary so they could be married.

Over the course of many years, Nicholas became known as the protector of children and sailors.

His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death which is December 6th. This was traditionally considered to be a lucky day to make large purchases and/ get married. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was considered to be the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation, when the veneration of saints began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained a good reputation; especially in Holland.

around the end of the 18th Century. In December of 1773 and again in 1774, a New York Newspaper had reported that groups of Dutch Families began a tradition to honor the anniversary of his death. The name Santa Claus evolved from St. Nicholas Dutch nick name Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for St. Nicholas). In 1804, John Pintard; a member of the New York Historical Society, distributed woodcuts of St. Nicholas at the society’s annual meeting. The background of the engravings contained now familiar Santa images including stockings filled with toys and fruit hung over the fireplace.

In 1809, Washington Irving helped to popularize the Sinter Klaas stories when he referred to St. Nicholas as the patron saint of New York in his book called The History of New York.

As his prominence grew, Sinter Klaas was described as everything from a rascal with a blue 3 cornered hat with a red waist coat and yellow stockings to a man wearing a broad brimmed hat and a huge pair of Flemish pink hose.

And now it’s the year 2024 and the image of Santa Claus is pretty much ingrained in nearly every aspect of Christmas. He’s seen on billboards, in television commercials, movies are made about him and Christmas songs prominently mention the man

and City departments; and representing and defending the city’s interests in all legal matters. He previously served as Chief of Policy and Strategic Planning in the Mayor’s Office. In this new role, Mike will succeed Corporation Counsel Adam Cederbaum, who, after 20 years of distinguished service in the Law Department, will conclude his City service early in the new year to become General Counsel for the Longwood Collective.

Kristin McSwain will serve as Chief of Policy and Research, working across cabinets and departments to coordinate the City’s efforts to analyze, test, and recommend policy actions to advance the Mayor’s citywide agenda. She previously served as Senior Advisor and Director of the Office of Early Childhood in the Mayor’s Office.

Ricardo Patrón will serve as Chief of Intergovernmental Relations,

in Red. His transportation; the legendary sleigh pulled by flying reindeer with individual names, lead of course by Rudolph with the bright red nose. When weather conditions require it, he has also made use of everything from helicopters to river boats. In some places around the world it has even been reported him coming to town riding an elephant. But in virtually every case, his arrival brings shrieks of joy, broad smiles, laughter and fun to the children who anxious-

ly await his arrival.

Never grumpy, always smiling and Jolly and maybe just a little portly, Santa Claus is a welcome attraction to any gathering during the Christmas Season as he bears gifts for all. When Christmas is over, as the story goes, Santa returns to his home at the North Pole with reindeer and elves in tow, and immediately prepares for next Christmas. From Legend of old to modern day hero, it’s said that he has no plans to retire – ever. Now what could be better than that?

T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
