“State of the City” Speech at Symphony Hall

Mayor Walsh Gives “State of the City” by Rick Winterson Tuesday night was quite a visual and aural spectacle (South Boston Online certainly means that statement as a compliment – we really enjoyed ourselves). The event was Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s Third Annual “State of the City” address, which combined a list of his administration’s accomplishments in 2016 with several goals he wants to achieve during the last year of his first term as Mayor of Boston. The venue was a jam-packed Symphony Hall. By itself, this world-famous Boston institution is a visual treat, with perfect acoustics for music – a prominent part of the “State of the City” program – and for making speeches. Now in its 117th year after opening in 1900, Symphony Hall

was one of first halls in the world to be designed according to scientific acoustical principles. Its acoustics are termed “lively” by the experts. The doors to Symphony Hall admitted around 2,000 people, and then closed promptly at 6:45, as advertised. As an introduction, a decidedly cool and with-it Jazz Ensemble from the Boston Arts Academy – piano, guitar, bass, trumpet, sax, and snares – expertly rendered jazz standards. A brief video showed some excellent views of Boston and its people. Right at 7 p.m., the Symphony’s Managing Director Mark Volpe gave his welcoming remarks. This was followed by a stirring Interfaith Prayer said by five clerics – Christian, Jew, Muslim – asking God for peace and understanding in a world too often torn by religious conflict. Fr.
