Friendship Party for George Connolly and His Family A Friendship Party for George Connolly and his family is planned a month from now: Friday evening, February 17, at 7 p.m. until … in Florian Hall. Raffles, great entertainment, and above all – good friendship. Tickets available locally (see ad below) or at the door. George is currently undergoing an aggressive program of treatment and therapy for throat cancer, by Rick Winterson Barbara Caputo Kelly There is hardly a local event or fundraiser you can think of where you haven’t come across a crowd gathered around a sharp dressed, welcoming figure whose distinct voice is firing off jokes and puns, keeping those within earshot doubled over and the mood happy and relaxed. George’s quick wit and humor can only be matched by his generosity. George has always been a giver. George has given us all the gift of laughter, amongst other things, let’s return the favor with our gift of friendship on February 17th. George Connolly was born and grew up in South Boston, as did his wife Tracy (Hayes) Connolly. His parents: William (Lefty) Connolly and his mom Alice (Alla) Ryan had four other children. George moved to Dorchester 10 years ago. George is a hard worker; he passed that virtue on to his family. He himself has worked two jobs for many years in order to
provide for his family – working for Amtrak as a Conducter for 20 years, and evenings at The Whiskey Priest for the last six years. And you well know what it means to “provide” these days. There are all of the usual expenses. Add to that costs like modern-day medical expenses. George and Tracy’s children, Maddie and Griffin, are both in college, at Syracuse and University of Arizona, respectively. And they’re great kids, too. Maddie is a bundle of energy. She has worked at the L as a Camp Counselor for years, and spent three summers in the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion working on their summer concerts. Griffin was a food runner at South Boston’s Lincoln, as well holding down a Parks & Recreation job at Nantasket Beach. They are both active in Greek letter societies at their colleges. But unfortunately, fate has a way of intervening. You see, George has been diagnosed with throat cancer. He is in his seventh week of intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment. And there are further complications. He had to have his tonsils removed, and since he is a diabetic, George has had a feeding tube inserted into his stomach to control his diet. But there’s always friendship. We mentioned that Friday, February 17, will be quite an evening with great entertainment. Both this writer’s favorite disc jockey – Dru Errico – and his favorite cover band – Thomas Park – will be there and lots of great raffles
Read the list of ticket outlets and Committee Members in the ad that accompanies this article. You’ll be impressed. George and
his family have a lot of friends. So reserve February 17.
Friday evening, See you there.
