Our Christmas Tree Ritual

By Kevin Devlin

I always knew when it was time to go out and buy our family Christmas tree, the one that would play a special part in our lives over the holiday season, when I saw the red and green tree holder lying on the parlor floor. My father, along with my brothers and I, would walk up to Dorchester Avenue to purchase that perfect tree. In the sixties and seventies, up and down the avenue, there were always empty lots that were seemingly transformed, in seconds, into temporary openair Christmas tree outlets. My father would take his time and proudly choose what he considered, a flawless, symmetrically shaped, wholesome holiday tree My father would let my brothers and I help him decorate the tree, but he made sure we

all clearly understood that this was his project, and we would follow his lead and instructions throughout the entire operation. The lights and ornaments were stored away down the cellar, and would be cautiously brought up into the living room, and placed carefully on the couch. The ornaments, preciously maintained for years, were all individually and carefully wrapped in old newspaper and tissue, to safeguard them against being broken. The lights would be the first to be strung up on the tree. Six, eight and sometimes as many as ten sets of lights would be put on the tree. He would start from the bottom, and go up and around the branches of the tree to the top. My father would then check each individual light and make sure every light was tightly in the socket, and in good

The ornaments came next. Beautiful, bright and shiny ornaments depicting the glory, excitement, and enthusiasm of the Christmas celebration. Each ornament was carefully selected and hung in its designated area. Each ornament complemented the other, like the musical sounds of instruments in a symphony orchestra; and would magnify the tree light effect through their brilliant and distinct reflections.

The garland, along with the glittering, silver tinsel, would then be placed on the branches of the tree. This was my favorite part of the entire undertaking. Shining brightly, the stringy tinsel would hang down from the branches like chilling icicles, visibly and strikingly pointing downward from the rooftops on a frigid, wintry day.

The final phase, the piece de resistance, was to place the beautiful, snow-white angel on top of the tree. An Angel of God overlooking the safety and security of the family during this season of peace, love and giving. After spending the better part of the day slowly and painstakingly piecing together (with our limited assistance) his masterpiece, our Dad would sternly warn us not to touch or go too close to the tree, lest we cause a disturbance that would alter the delicate balance of the finished product.

So, with his tree complete and his message conveyed, we would have our own tree lighting ceremony. And without failure, throughout those (now) cherished years, we would all simultaneously nod in silent, happy recognition, that Dad had indeed again captured the essence of the holiday, and produced yet another glorious and stunning Christmas tree. Merry Christmas To Everyone “It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.” (W. T. Ellis)

BY KEVIN DEVLIN We at SBOL would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Christmas time is when we come together to celebrate faith in God and Man, and the birth of Christ. It is a time to give thanks for family and friends; a time to pause and reflect on our good fortune in life. At Christmas we hope for peace on earth and that goodwill will prevail among our family of nations. Here are some famous Christmas quotes to reflect upon as we celebrate this wondrous time of the year: “The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.” Burton Hills “Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it the most.” Ruth Carter Stapleton “Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. If we think of these things, there will be born in us a Savior and over us will shine a star sending

its gleam of hope to the world.” Calvin Coolidge “On Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Christ with prayer, feasting, and great merriment. But, most of all, we experience it in our hearts. For, more than just a day, Christmas is a state of mind.” Ronald Reagan“ Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.” Washington Irving “Peace on earth will come to stay, when we live Christmas every day”

Helen Rice “It is Christmas every time you let God love others through you…yes, it is Christmas every time you smile at your brother and offer him your hand.” Mother Teresa “The joy of brightening other lives, bearing each other’s burdens, easing other’s loads and supplanting empty hearts and lives with generous gifts becomes for us the magic of Christmas. W.C. Jones “It is the day we remind ourselves that men can and must live in peace with his neighbors and that it is the peacemakers who are truly blessed.” John F. Kennedy

Hanukkah at Christmas

This year of 2016, the lunar calendar that sets the date of Hanukkah (or Chanukah, if you wish) coincides with our solar Gregorian calendar’s date of Christmas on December 25. Hanukkah in 2016 begins at sunset on Christmas Eve on December 24 and continues for eight days. It is also known as “The Festival of Lights”, because it commemorates the relighting of the sacred lamp in the Temple after the Jews, led by Judah Maccabee, had retaken it from Greek armies. Only one small, sealed jar of lamp oil was left, but that miraculously lasted for eight days when the Temple was rededicated to God. As Hanukkah celebrations progress, a new candle is lit each evening until all eight are lit. The candles are lit using the ninth “Shamash” candle, which is usually placed in the center of the candelabrum. Hanukkah is a time of peace, fellowship, and celebration.

Winter Beauty

You already know that the last block of West Broadway before Dorchester Avenue is one of the most eye-catching in town. It showed especially well after the recent light snow that left a few inches of the fluffy stuff. And even the cold, damp rainy weather from last week couldn’t diminish the evening glow of a Fort Point pathway between A Street and Channel Center.

Yes, Sullivan’s, the St. Patrick’s Parade, and warm, sunny weather will return. But in the meantime, enjoy our South Boston winter for a few moments every now and then. It certainly can be a bother but also can be strikingly beautiful. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from South Boston Online.

Fundraising Success for Medicine Wheel Productions by Rick Winterson

This year of 2016 A.D. is the 25th Anniversary of Medicine Wheel Productions (MWP). MWP was originally conceived by South Boston’s Michael Dowling back in 1991 as a way to memorialize World AIDS Day and the many people lost to that epidemic. MWP expanded its scope in 1996, in response to the drug-related suicide crisis engulfing South Boston. This led to a decade-plus project, where young people at risk made a park out of No Man’s Land, an acre-sized plot of unclaimed ground between the High School and the Monument on the Heights. Recently, MWP created and sponsored the “Hand in Hand” project – a notable breakthrough in community policing. To use figures, 200 Boston Police Department officers and 200 of Boston’s youth have jointly taken part in “Hand to Hand”.

AIDS Day observance on December 1 in the Cyclorama (see Online’s December 8 issue, page 10), Medicine Wheel Productions held a very successful fundraiser in the well-appointed Dorset Hall on Neponset Avenue on Wednesday evening, December 14. The event was a key success, which will enable MWP to continue its mission of art as a public service – of individually developing one’s own awareness through public art.

A successful fundraiser concludes at Dorset Hall – looking on are BPD Dep’y Supt. Nora Baston, Mary Dowling, Artistic Director Michael Dowling. Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry, key contributor Michael Moore, Consultant Joe Rull, Rep. Dan Hunt, Medicine Wheel Chair Mark McGonagle, and City Councilor-at-Large Annissa Essaibi-George. Viewed by itself, a medicine wheel – an American Indian symbol – stands for healing and inclusiveness – it looks for remedies in all directions: north, south, east, and west. Its supporting members are equal in length and dimension; they

The amount raised, led by a large donation from Developer Michael Moore of Oranmore, will provide significant support to Medicine Wheel’s 2017 programs. Police Department leaders, many elected officials, and a number of people from South Boston’s non-profit agencies joined together at this festive and productive fundraising event.

South Boston Hall of Fame 2016 Inductees By Kevin Devlin

and make our community unique.

On Sunday, November 13, at the Curley Recreation Center, the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame inducted ten members. Raymond L. Flynn was the Master of Ceremonies. The ten newly-enrolled members are: John Beatty played on the varsity football team at the former Don Bosco High School, West Point, and then for the AFL in Germany. He also coached for several years in Yarmouth, Maine. Sister Nancy Brennan, a retired Lieutenant in the United States Army, played softball for Saint Monica’s and for the Boston Park’s Department. She coached at Pope John and was selected twice as Coach of the Year. She is also a member of Pope John’s Hall of Fame. Kaitlin Linehan was a three-sport ballplayer at Dom Savio in East Boston and earned 22 varsity letters. She played college ball at Plymouth State. Michaela Long was a standout player in the South Boston Youth Hockey League (SBYHL) then excelled at the University of New Hampshire, winning several Hockey East Honors and scoring over 100 points. She subsequently played two seasons for the Boston Blades in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. She was the first female player from Southie to play in the National Women’s Hockey League that was established in 2015 and is comprised of four teams: the Buffalo Beauts, Boston Pride, New York Reviters and Connecticut Whale. Michaela plays for the Connecticut Whale squad. William “Willie” Fitzgerald, aka “Fitzy” has been coaching in the South Boston Babe Ruth League for over 35 seasons, volunteering his time to keep kids busy and off of the streets. Chris Mullen was a member of Kiley’s Kids championship team and played on the South Boston Youth Hockey League Midget “B” squad which captured the USA National Championship in 1988. Playing at the former Don Bosco High School, he was an All-Scholastic and Catholic Conference MVP and subsequently skated for Salem State.

Kurt Shannon, who was posthumously inducted, was an original member of the South Boston Youth Hockey League and the leading scorer in its inaugural season. He enjoyed an outstanding hockey career up at the Heights for the South Boston Knights. Steve Tradd was the first inductee for the sport of lacrosse. He was a four-year starter at Brandeis and was selected team captain his senior year. Steve was an All-New England All Star in 1974 and nominated to the Brandeis Hall of Fame. Danny O’Brien played on the SBYHL Midget team which won the state tournament in 1999. He played on the varsity team at Boston College High School for three seasons. He skated for UMass Lowell for three years and was selected as team caption in his senior year. And, he played briefly in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Robbie Walton played varsity basketball at Boston Latin for three seasons, earning two MVP awards and selected as a Dual County League All-Star twice. He was on the UMass Lowell varsity hoop team for four years that produced three NCAA tourney appearances and a New England-10 championship. Danny and Robbie joined their dads as members of this coveted Hall. Danny’s dad Mike was an original member of the Hall in 1979, selected for his prowess as a shortstop in the “M” Street Softball League. Robbie’s dad Bob was inducted in 2003 for his achievements in baseball. Ray Flynn, the former mayor of Boston, Ambassador to the Vatican, and an All-American hoop star at Providence, was thrilled to announce the new inductees and address the gathering. This is what he wrote afterwards: “I told the deserving inductees,

including family and friends, that over the many years, people from outside South Boston have asked me, ‘Ray, it’s obvious that you are very proud of your hometown and neighbors. I’ve heard you talk about how great it was growing up in Southie. So what made it so great growing up there? So what made it so special?’ I remember being asked that question on national TV by sport’s broadcast legend, Curt Gowdy, after the N.I.T. championship basketball game at Madison Square Garden in 1963. What I said then, was the same thing I said at the Hall of Fame ceremony. Certain families were the foundation of our community but so was our faith. But the many dedicated coaches were the people who had a big impact in helping our youngsters

We all know the legendary names over the years. but a few in my day who I admire who stand out are, Frank Fallon and Father Barry from Saint Augustine’s CYO, Jim Ryan the first commissioner of Little League, Eddie Sheehy of the youth hockey league, George McCarthy and Jimmy Donovan of sandlot football, Janie Comfrey of Saint Monica’s girls’ softball and Fran Dugan from the Boys Club. They and so many others helped build character in young boys and girls through sports and made our community a great place to grow up. Kids in those days had not time to get involved in trouble, take drugs or alcohol. So when the true story of South Boston is told, let’s remember these heroes gave their time and energy to teach a youngster how to hit a baseball, shoot a puck, and kick a football and in doing something for more important. They taught kids the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play. These are the values which helped develop integrity, patriotism, and character in young boys and girls. These coaches helped make Southie the special place it was to grow up.”
