Civic Innovation Series Packs Seaport District Hall

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Breakfast is ON!

t wasn’t that the Annual 2018 St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast was really ever OFF, i.e., cancelled outright as in, “It won’t take place this year.” Of course, our state Senator Linda Dorcena Forry had unexpectedly resigned to accept an executive position in private industry with John Fish’s Suffolk Construction Company. And equally of course, she leaves behind her leadership as the 2017 Chair and Emcee of the Breakfast. But South Boston has many speakers, raconteurs, and people quick with a punch line. And we have even more politicians. At least a half-dozen names came immediately to mind when thinking of who could take Senator Linda’s place this year. However, that much has been settled. Congressman Stephen F. Lynch and Boston City Councilor-at-Large Michael

F. Flaherty have stepped up to preside over this year’s Breakfast. Steve has been South Boston’s Congressman since 2001; Michael, in two segments, has served as a City Councilor for 14 years. Steve is a respected speaker and narrator of stories. Michael, among his other talents, can carry a tune rather well – especially an Irish one. Do you recall his duets on various occasions with then state Senator Jack Hart? This year’s Breakfast will be a bit of the old, as well as something of the new. The Breakfast will be held once again in the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall on Sunday morning, March 18, right before the Parade steps off. As for something new, it will be the first time in South Boston Online’s memory that the Breakfast will be hosted by a two-man duo. Will it be a sort of tag-team match? Or what?

his past Tuesday evening a packed meeting at District Hall in the Seaport featured a forum sponsored by Microsoft Innovation and Policy Center and Venture Café on the housing crisis in Boston. It was a rather spirited presentation by development representatives, housing planners, architects, and

city officials from the mayor’s innovation lab. The forum explored Boston’s current housing crunch in considerable detail, to provide some possible solutions to the exploding housing shortage impacting community neighborhoods. This is a subject near and dear to Mayor Walsh’s policies for the future of Boston, as he has repeatedly made plans for ramping up more affordable housing in the city. continued on page 8
