VOLUME XVIIII - ISSUE 12

Three-Family Row House on O-Street Collapses! by Rick Winterson Last week, the north-facing exterior wall in the three-decker residence at 62 O Street buckled and collapsed. Being an exterior wall, it was also a bearing wall of course, so the building was immediately condemned, evacuated, and closed off to any further entry. Fortunately, there were no related injuries. The three-decker adjoining 62 O (64 O Street, which shares the center wall with 62) was also closed for safety reasons, including closure to the residents of 64 O. While the north wall at 62 was a “standalone”, there was no immediate way to tell if further collapsing could occur in either 62 or 64 O, so “Condemned” signs (a white “X” on a red background) were posted on both three-deckers.

Take it

In addition, much of the O Street block between Third and East Broadway was taped off to pedestrians and auto traffic. Photographs revealed no definite cause of the wall collapse. After the collapse occurred, the 62 O Street building had a slight list to the left – that was all. Inquiries at the site of the collapse earlier this week turned up no ready explanation for the damage either. This is apparently still under investigation, but in any case, the demolition of 62 O Street has proceeded very rapidly, with a full crew and 24/7 police details working through last weekend. At the time of this writing, the ultimate fate of #64 next door is not known. Investigation of its structure is still not complete; a blue plastic tarpaulin has been draped over the exposed central wall.

Leaning. Note #62’s slight lean to the left and the condemnatory “X’s” See more photography of the ongoing demolition on page 3.
