by Rick Winterson Perhaps the most impressive fact about the upcoming St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade is its variety. At the very start of the Parade, you’ll see our City of Boston’s Fire Department, EMT Emergency Services Units, and Police Department, along with State Police units, leading off the march. Watch for the “Cops for Kids with Cancer” trolley and accompanying marchers, staffed by the

Retired Police Officers Association. It’s just one example of how much service is rendered beyond normal duties.

And then enjoy the Boston Police Gaelic Column Pipes & Drums - a truly skilled band.

And be sure to give them a hand. These are our public servants at their very best.

The U.S., Navy gets a bit of a play in this year’s Parade.

They’ll be represented by three naval contingents. The USS San Jacinto (CG-56), a guided missile cruiser, will pay her respects to South Boston from the Black Falcon Pier this year, and she’ll send a color guard and marching contingent to the Parade on Sunday. There’s an occasional comment made about the Parade being “militaristic”, but the numbers simply don’t bear that out. Even including non-combat units like the USO, JROTC, veterans’ groups, and the USS Constitution crew, there are only 16 military units marching – less than one in every seven or about 13% of the total.

Much of the upcoming Parade will delight the chil-

dren – the “Clowning for Kids” Foundation (#25), Ghostbusters United (#30), the Cycling Murrays (#43), the New England Brethren of Pirates (#66), and the Batman Car (#115). Young adults will go for the Centaurus High School Band (#29 and huge!), Gateway Marching Band from Pennsylvania (#33), the Kenny School Band (#62), KIISS 108 FM (#73), and the South End Dynamite Twirlers (#78).

Boston’s trade unions (eight of them this year) will play a big part in the 2017 Parade – the Local #17 Tin Men, New England Council of Carpenters, Pipefitters Local #537, Teamsters Local #25, Painters and Allied Craftsmen Local #35, Bricklayers Local #3, Ironworkers Local #7, and Local #103 Electricians will all have floats of their own, built and paraded by their own membership.

There are two new real treats in this year’s roster you won’t want to miss: The famous Mummers from Philadelphia, in the persons of the prize-winning Woodland String Band, will march, as will the Tian Guo Marching Band and “heavenly music”. Just google them up – you’ll see. The Year of Our Lord 2017 will be fantas-

tic, thanks to the Allied War Veterans Council volunteers.

Senator Forry Hosts Annual St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry will host the annual St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast on Sunday, March 19 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The breakfast, which spotlights Irish and Irish-American culture, features a line-up of the state’s leading political figures, and will be televised in its entirety on New England Cable News (NECN).

“The St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast is a time-honored tradition in South Boston and I am deeply honored to once again have the opportunity to host Boston’s signature St. Patrick’s Day event for a fourth year,” Senator Forry said. “We have some wonderful guests coming again this year— including some big surprises. It will be a special day.”

Senator Forry, who represents the First Suffolk district, has worked closely with her South Boston colleagues, including Congressman Stephen Lynch, Representative Nick Collins, Councilor Bill Linehan and Councilor Michael Flaherty, to make the event a success.

The breakfast will be broadcast live throughout the region

As is the case every year, this Saint Patrick’s Day Breakfast will remain a truly inclusive, diverse event that reflects the incredible diversity of the City of Boston. The Saint Patrick’s Day Breakfast is a singular entity that is not connected to the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade which has been entrenched in controversy due to the denial of OUTVETS’ participation.

Two Ships Visit South Boston This Year

South Boston Citizens’ Association to recognize Captain and Crew of USNS Comfort and USS San Jacinto It has been customary for a U.S. Navy ship to visit South Boston over the weekend of the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade and the many other festivities all around South Boston. This year, two U.S. Navy ships will be docked on our waterfront. One of them is the USNS Comfort, a hospital ship here at Boston Ship Repair for routine maintenance. And on Thursday morning, March 16, the USS San Jacinto (CG-56) is scheduled to arrive at the Black Falcon Pier on the north side of the Reserved Channel.

SBCA President Tom McGrath states, “It is an honor to host and recognize these men and women, who are docked right here in our own backyard and to give them a thousand welcomes from South Boston.” Contingents from both ships’ crews will be recognized at the South Boston Citizens’ Association Banquet this

The USNS Comfort is a U.S. Navy hospital ship. Her Commanding Officer is Capt. Lanny Boswell. Briefly stated in nonmilitary terms, the USNS Comfort’s mission is to provide medical care of the most advanced kind to members of our Armed Forces who are injured and/or wounded while carrying out their assignments.

She is literally a floating hospital.

The USS San Jacinto, or the “San Jack” as she is commonly known, is a guided missile cruiser of the Ticonderoga class, commanded

by Capt. Dennis Velez. She was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and was launched on November 14, 1986.

She is named for the Battle of San Jacinto, where General Sam Houston’s troops won the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution on April 21, 1836, by forcing Santa Anna’s

Mexican army into a headlong retreat in a matter of minutes. This victory was a major step towards Texas statehood late in 1845.

The USS San Jacinto (CG-56) is the third U.S. Navy ship bearing that name. In 1989, she began her combat career in the Middle East, firing the first cruise missiles into the Desert Storm war zone created

by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Since then, she has compiled a highly distinguished record in situations and combat zones around the world.

The record of Capt. Boswell, the USNS Comfort’s Commanding Officer is especially noteworthy. He has performed health research in many areas, administered a wide variety of musculoskeletal clinical care, and competently headed challenging commands since his enlistment in 1981. The awards he has received for his exemplary service are numerous.

By Kevin Devlin On Sunday afternoon, March 5, in celebration of the Saint Patrick’s Day, Evacuation Week festivities in South Boston, enthusiastic bowlers journeyed up to the South Boston Bowlarama on East Broadway to enjoy a carefree afternoon of bowling and fun with family and friends. This annual bowling event, free to the adult-public, is sponsored by the South Boston Citizen’s Association. Representatives from the association, Richie DeVoe, Pauline Bare, Andrea Flaherty, and Joyce (The Admiral) Higgins were present coordinating this adult event which was free to those who attended. Bowling alley times were donated by Bowlarama. The beer was free and donated by Coors Light who also distributed free tee-shirts and beer-holders. Free pizza was also thrown in to keep the bowlers happy and energetic.

And everyone had a great time.

And the winners were: Puck-Shooting contest In the six and under age bracket, Thomas Kyle Greeley (boys’ division) and Amber Muldoney (girls’ division) finished first. In the eight and under boys’ age bracket, Ethan Muldoney came in first, and in the eight and under girls’ age bracket, Estelle Corbitt won top honors. In

the ten and under boys’ age bracket Rocco Blasi came in first, while Dmitri Markos finished second. In the ten and under age girls’ bracket, Maeve Corbitt came in first. In the twelve and under boys’ age bracket, Terry Markos brought home the gold while Stephen captured the silver medal. In the twelve and under girls’ age bracket, Mae Lafferty came in first and Haley Holmes finished

South Boston Online will now ask you a few questions and we’ll make a few editorial comments here: For instance, did you know that the Parade is locally financed by the generosity of individuals and neighborhood businesses? Well, it is. The largest single “Southie time” with 100+marching units is paid for locally. In addition, because of the prestige of the South Boston Parade, many marching groups take part for a very low cost or for no fee at all. So, if everyone who goes to the Parade this year gives just “a buck”,

next year’s 2018 Parade would be fully paid for in advance.

One of the reasons for the Parade’s popularity and prestige is the fact that it’s really two celebrations in one. March 17 is the date of St. Patrick’s death in Antrim, Ireland. The Parade celebrates America’s Irish heritage, and by inference, the heritage of every immigrant who has ever come to our nation.

In addition, 241 years ago, on March 17 in 1776, the cannons emplaced on South Boston’s Dorchester Heights drove the British from Boston. March 17 came to be called Evacuation Day. It was Gen. George Washington’s and colonial America’s first military victory, as well as a key step toward our eventual independence. And as a bit of historical trivia, the colonial countersign on the Heights that day back in 1776 was “St. Patrick”.

So if you can’t make a donation in advance, please “Bring a Buck” to the Parade this Sunday and drop it in the buckets.

15th Annual Taste of South Boston to be Held at the Seaport Hotel on Sunday April 2, 2017 The South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation (South Boston NDC) will hold its 15th Annual Taste of South Boston on Sunday April 2, 2017, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Seaport Hotel. This event has become one of the city’s premier food events, enjoyed by 500 attendees. For an entrance fee of $70 in advance ($75 at the door), attendees can sample food and beverage offerings from 30 of South Boston’s top restaurants while enjoying live jazz music and bidding on outstanding silent auction items and raffles.

Making Those Shots at the Free Throw Contest Annual free throw competition held at the Tynan gym

By Kevin Devlin On Monday evening, March 6, the annual Saint Patrick’s Day, Evacuation Week free throw competition, sponsored by the South Boston Citizen’s Association and the Tynan Community Center, was held at the Tynan gymnasium.

Tynan Program Supervisor Kathy Davis and her dedicated staff coordinated the event. Tynan Administrative Coordinator John Lydon, along with Greg Tynan CC Athletic Director Greg Lally, was busy taking pictures. Tynan CC Assistant Athletic Director Sherike Morris and Tynan Youth Worker Katie O’Connell were busy signing in participants and overseeing the event. By Kevin Devlin On Saturday evening, March 11, pugilistic enthusiasts packed the Peter Welch Gym to watch boxers compete in the Evacuation Day annual boxing event. Mike Larkin, Eddie Kelley and Tommy Connors were recognized for their commitment to the South Boston boxing community. All three have been involved in this sport for the past fifty years and really love all that it has to offer to the

Members of the boxing committee were Peter Welch, Tommy Connors, Eddie Kelley, Mike Larkin, Danny Long, Jimmy LaBlanc, Jimbo Curran, Tommy Dargin, Ryan Long, and Francis Hurley.

Special thanks to Tommy McGrath, Peter Welch, Joey Curran, Billy Higgins, William Stoddard, and Bobby O’Shea for their assistance in making this a successful event.
