George Benner – Mentor, Trusted Servant South Boston Online has written extensively about South Boston’s heroin epidemic, in a series of articles that will continue throughout the summer. Here is Online’s Spotlight article on a man who is doing something about this crisis – George J. Benner. by Rick Winterson
Perhaps you have noticed that the gardens along Devine Way are green and growing rapidly. They extend from the west side of the Mary Ellen McCormack (MEM) Task Force building, along Devine Way across from the Mary Ellen McCormack (Old Harbor) development, and almost down to Wendeller Street. There are 91
separate plots. They are tended by the Trusted Servants of the Round Table, an organization founded by George Benner. A bit of background: The gardens on Devine Way were started by Phoebe Flemming, as part of her “South Boston Grows” project work. George Benner took over this task, and now has a number of industrious young people from the Mary Ellen McCormick project weeding and watering these garden plots. They get paid for their efforts. And you can bet they are enthusiastic - George’s phone comes off the wall with calls from kids looking for work. In George’s words, they “Learn to Earn”. Come continued on pg 2
