That’s why Sunday’s Mass at St. Francis Assisi Church in Braintree was nothing short of a “miracle” when several children, including my 8-year-old special needs grandson, Braeden O’Doherty, received his first Holy Communion .As Father Joe White said at the Gate of Heaven CYO Basketball League Awards Night, where he received the a Jack McDonough Award for his dedicated service to

the youth of South Boston, “the mission of the church is to help all people know God”. Father White is among those who know and love Braeden, and how special this day truly was. Fr. White also reminded us, that it was our own Richard Cardinal Cushing who first opened the doors of opportunity to special needs children, long before it became popular in society. We grew up in a South Boston listening to him advocate for the handicapped and disabled.

Father Joe will soon be heading up a new program initiated by Cardinal Sean, which will serve men, women and young adults who are experiencing substance abuse.The continued on page 2

Braeden may not articulate his love for Jesus in the way we do, but he does it in his own way that is just as meaningful. He truly understands the beautiful gift that he is receiving today.I told my friend Barry Hynes, a caring Catholic, “Barry, I’ve had the privilege of knowing

some extraordinary people while serving Boston as its mayor, representing our great country as ambassador. But Braeden receiving his first Holy Communion is the proudest day of all.” My grandson may not win a high school state baseball championship or play basketball before millions on national television, but he’s experiencing something far more important.Yes, today is a special day for not only Braeden, but all parents of special

needs children who find comfort in God. They are proving that with love, determination and patient instruction, all children can get to know and receive the greatest gift of all, the gift of Jesus’ love. In my book, special needs parents and programs like religious instruction, and sports programs like the Challenge Athletic League and Special Olympics perform miracles every day. After all, in God’s eyes, everyone is equal.

The temporary emergency oneway street designations put in place because of the record snowstorms have been removed. Work began a week ago Monday and was completed by the next Wednesday. The willingness to be flexible and (more important) to listen to affected residents restored trust in the City of Boston’s administration.

Because City Hall changed its mind, the two meetings held at the Condon and Tynan Schools and Community Centers during the last two weeks are now moot. The original reason for extending the temporary oneway plan until June 1 was to use it as a pilot program after the snow had melted away. However, highly vocal opposition to continuing the pilot program arose as soon as the snow disappeared.

The jam-packed second meeting in the Tynan School’s cafeteria (Wednesday, May 6) was especially raucous, even by South Boston standards of speaking out. The officials, both appointed and elected, who

attempted to conduct this meeting, were often drowned out, as were dissenters from the audience. Also, there was a mix of accurate and inaccurate information.

For example, it was claimed that the new one-way configuration caused cars to speed more. South Boston Online obtained a copy of a traffic survey at the beginning of May, and this did not seem to be true. The overall speed limit here is 30 miles per hour. Less than 10% of all cars timed for speed traveled at 31 to 35 mph; just a very few exceeded 35 mph; none went as much as 40 mph.

On the other hand, complaints about inconvenient routes seemed

justified. South Boston is in fact mostly a square grid of streets. However, there are enough exceptions to create problems for many – the Tynan School across Fourth Street, the one-way segment of D Street, and continuing street excavations are just a few.

Also, residents thought that an accurate pilot program would go beyond June 1. That was also a reasonable feeling. Accurate studies of this size take longer than 60 days. In any case, a study as long as necessary can now be made, using South Boston’s permanent traffic patterns as a basis.

Honoring Father Joe White

Block Party on Sunday, May 31 To honor Father Joe White and his commitment to the Saint Vincent de Paul Parish and the South Boston community, a Block Party will be held on Sunday, May 31, at 11:00 a.m. in front of the parish church, after the 10:00 a.m. Mass. We will miss Father “Joe” immeasurably but are excited for his opportunity to serve the greater Boston Community, as the Liaison to the Cardinal, as the Archdiocesan Director of the Pastoral Care-Recovery Support Service’s Office.

Father Joe has served as St. Vincent de Paul’s pastor for ten years. He has counseled and supported, through good and tough times, not only Southie residents, but also those who live in other parts of Boston.

He has never refused anyone who needed help. Additionally, he served on the Board of the Gavin Foundation and the Laboure Center; and is the Chaplain of the Saunders Post and the Knights of Columbus.

We are inviting members of St. Vincent/Our Lady of Good Voyage and the larger South Boston community to this block party. We may need more than one city block. So, we hope you will join us for this event. The event is free. We will be serving food, refreshments, and there will be entertainment. We will also be selling raffles on great items. This upcoming weekend, known as our Memorial Day weekend, marks the unofficial start of summer. People will be heading to Cape Cod or up north to our neighbors in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, to enjoy the scenery and beaches. The smell of outdoor barbecues will permeate our neighborhoods as family and friends gather together to eat, drink, and be merry.

But Memorial Day signifies much more than eating to our hearts content and having fun. It’s a time of reflection and gratitude. Freedom hasn’t been easy to preserve and many men and women

throughout our history had fought and died in the service of their country.

Fought in defense of democracy, fought for us, and protected us from harm.

They unselfishly paid the ultimate sacrifice without hesitation.

On Memorial Day, the practice of placing flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers is not only done in remembrance of those men and women who served in our armed forces, but also to honor the freedom they preserved for all Americans. So, take a moment to remember and honor all those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice. We owe them this moment of remembrance.

Observing Memorial Day Originally called Decoration Day, it is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.

On Monday, May 35, Americans will celebrate Memorial Day. Unfortunately, traditional observance of this day has greatly diminished over the years. But it must be remembered, not just as a time to relax and cook a couple of steaks on the barbecue, but as a time to reflect upon those who sacrificed their lives throughout history. It must be remembered as a time to honor those who served their country, so that we could continue to enjoy our freedom and democratic way of life.

It must be remembered, as stated

by President George W. Bush, on Memorial Day in 2004, as a time when we honor…“All of our fallen soldiers, their commitment to our country, and their legacy of patriotism and sacrifice. By giving their lives in the cause of freedom, these

heroes have protected and inspired all Americans.”

Some consider Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, as the first observance of Memorial Day, when he dedicated a portion of the battlefield, as a cemetery, for those who consecrated that soil in the sacrifice of battle. In 1865, Henry Welles, a druggist in Waterloo, New York, began promoting the idea of decorating the graves of Civil War veterans. On May 5, 1868, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, General John A. Logan, issued General Order #11, his Memorial Day Order, designating May 30, 1868 as a day for… “Strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and tes-

timonials of respect as circumstances may permit.”

This first official Memorial Day observance, which was originally called Decoration Day until 1882, took place at Arlington National Cemetery. This cemetery housed the graves of 20,000 Union dead and several hundred Confederate dead. The South however refused to acknowledge this day until after World War I. At that time, this holiday was changed to encompass all those, in all of our wars, who sacrificed their lives for this great nation.

In 1950, Congress passed a joint resolution, requesting the President to issue a proclamation, calling upon the people of this great nation to observe each Memorial Day… “As a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people…might unite in prayer.” Congress also designated the minute beginning at 3 p.m. local time on that day, as a time for Americans to observe the “National Moment of Remem-

brance.” In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, as the birthplace of Memorial Day. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress, and the last Monday in May was designated as the day for it to be observed.

On Memorial Day, a small American flag is placed on each grave in Arlington National Cemetery. The president or vice-president, after giving his speech honoring the contributions of the dead, lays a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Taps are subsequently played.

Later, as the clock strike 3 p.m.in every corner of America, we are encouraged to pay respect to all of our fallen heroes, by remaining silent for sixty seconds. This “Moment of Remembrance” is the least we can do for the men and women throughout history who sacrificed their lives so that we could continue to enjoy ours.

Youth Ambassadors – An Opportunity This is the third article in South Boston Online’s series on drugs in Boston and in our neighborhood.

people, and you’ll almost always be OK. In this article, we’re writing about a program called “Youth Ambassadors”. It is a volunteer group of teenagers and young adults located in the South Boston Community Health Center, 409 West Broadway (third floor). The Director of the Youth Ambassadors Program is Mayra Rodriguez-Howard; the Program’s Community Organizer is Linda Doran.

Mayra can be easily reached at 617-464-7423; Linda, at 617464-7463. Call them at any time. Leave them messages if they’re out. They’ll get back to you soon. They will also refer you to another service agency, if you need one – possibly one right at the Health Center.

This is a busy time now for young people in school. The school year is finishing up; some have already begun their summer jobs; it is time to begin college applications for many.

Plus that, the weather has turned good after a record-setting winter. So think about an activity for next fall, like Youth Ambassadors.

Over the years, hundreds of young people have gone through the Youth Ambassadors Program, along with taking part in all its activities. If you want a place in the community – a place where you can come up with your own thoughts and opinions – think about joining.

Working with the other Youth Ambassadors, you’ll arrange your own activities. Typically, young people join the Youth Ambassadors from ages 12 to 14, but you could join later, if you want. Most of them stay on as members for several years.

You’ll be in a group of young people who have a voice, and have something to say to the South Boston community.

You’ll take part in activities with other local agencies and groups, which form the “Hope & Recovery” Coalition. People will listen to you. In prior events, members of the Youth Ambassadors have participated in question-and-answer sessions with Rep. Nick Collins. You’ll be an integral part of the community through Youth Ambassadors. You’ll know that you and your own opinions matter.

Here’s just one example of the Youth Ambassadors’ recent activities: In April, a group of them traveled to Bay St. Louis on the Gulf Coast in the State of Mississippi to perform volunteer work rebuilding homes there. Ten years after Hurricane Katrina hit Bay St. Louis, disaster relief is still needed.

When they returned here, the Youth Ambassadors said, “This experience changed our lives”, “Emotional”, and “Worth it”.

Teresa Hart Honored at Gate of Heaven C.Y.O. Fundraiser The Rev A. Paul White Award is presented annually at the Gate of Heaven Catholic Youth Organization’s Fundraiser to a woman in our community whose dedication and commitment has had a positive impact on the youth and families of the South Boston community. This year’s recipient has been a member of the Gatey C.Y.O. fundraiser committee since it’s inception 29 years ago. With her help the annual fundraiser has always been a fun and successful event. Her work on our fundraiser facebook page has kept everyone informed while no other task has been too big or small for her to handle. Her talents from working on ticket sales, signing in people at the door, organizing auction prizes, cleaning up when things are all over or just making people feel comfortable

with her kindness and smile have been invaluable.

This year’s recipient is Teresa M. Hart, daughter of Ellie Hart and the late John A. Hart, Sr.. Teresa is also sister to former Senator Jack Hart, Maureen Beatty, Susan Woods and Ellen Noone.

Besides the time and effort Teresa has donated to the Gatey C.Y.O. and Parish, Teresa has also be involved with the Harry McDonough Sailing Program and it’s annual fundraiser, Simon of Cyrene Society, South Boston Girls’ Softball and many more local charities.

As an employee of NSTAR/Eversource, Teresa has been a member of the bargaining team advocating for fellow employees and as former President of the employees club she was responsible for social activities that enhanced the life of her coworkers and their families.

In her spare time Teresa is a member of the executive board of The Driftwood Beach Club in Lauderdale by the Sea, once again watching carefully making sure everyone’s concerns are heard.

Teresa’s big heart, gift of laughter and her appreciation and love of life has been invaluable to the Gatey and South Boston community.

Srs. Louise and Jean, SND, Receive Julie’s Angel Awards

After so many years of bestowing Angel Awards, the founders of Julie’s Family Learning Program – Sr. Louise Kearns, SND, and Sr. Jean Sullivan, SND – were finally awarded Angels of their own. The occasion was their “Honoring Event” on Thursday evening, May 14, a Banquet at Venezia that kicked off Julie’s “Legacy Year”. There’s no need to add that the Julie’s Angel Awards to Sr. Louise and Sr. Jean were richly, richly deserved.

The “Honoring Event” program was excellent. The guests included an original Julie’s founder, Sr. Patricia O’Malley, SND, who conferred the Blessing, and Mayor Marty Walsh, who praised Sr. Jean’s and

Sr. Louise’s combined 114 years of devoted service to South Boston.

Author Michael Patrick MacDonald read from his work, and then spoke of how Julie’s influenced him, especially his sense of justice – “So long as you do this to the least of my brethren …”

Lauretta Brennan, a mother and an alumna of Julie’s, then told her story, which was inspirational. Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry, who has four children, spoke of both the challenge and the joys of being a Mom: “Educate a mother, and you’ll educate a generation.”

After Sen. Linda concluded her remarks, the Julie’s Angel Awards were bestowed upon Sr. Louise by

Ann D’Auria and Sr. Jean by Christine Griffin. Immediate standing ovations then occurred, as well as individual remarks from both recipients.

The “Honoring Event” Banquet was a truly memorable event. And

it’s just the kickoff of Julie’s Legacy Year, which will feature many other events and celebrations. Be sure to keep posted on the many, many activities at Julie’s over the next 12 months. There’ll be something for everyone.

Raymond L Flynn Commission Announces Hearing The Raymond L Flynn Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. on the Fifth Floor of City Hall. The hearing will solicit input and ideas from the public about how best to honor and commemorate the legacy of Ray Flynn.

Ray Flynn served as a State Representative, City Councilor, Mayor of Boston, and Ambassador to the Vatican. He has dedicated his life to helping people in ways large and small. He has worked on a diverse number of things from involvement with significant world leaders and events to making sure the streets of Boston were plowed in the winter; from assessing American efforts to help Sudanese refugees in the horn of Africa to establishing the first Homeless Commission in Boston; and, from working with Vatican officials to help war torn Bosnia to

bringing peace to the streets of our city.

The hearing will feature a presentation of some of the Commission’s ideas, and then the public will be invited to testify.

The testimony will be an opportunity for members of the public to talk about what Flynn’s contributions have meant to them, to offer input on existing ideas for an appropriate designation and location to acknowledge his lifelong commitment to the people of this city, and to introduce new ideas. The hearing also affords people an opportunity to learn more about the legacy of Ray Flynn and what his leadership has meant to Boston.

Commission Co-Chairs Frank Doyle and Rosemarie Sansone will preside over the hearing.

Commission members will then take the input into consideration before submitting recommendations to the City Council.

Perry Carnival, 2015

The Carnival at the Oliver Hazard Perry last Sunday was a great success – a fitting cap to a busy, busy South Boston weekend. Lots of airfilled bouncy toys – not a one of them deflated below acceptable limits – that would have passed any inspection, official or otherwise. The sun was out in full, the odor of popcorn was in the air, and there were nonstop kids really enjoying themselves in the schoolyard, all in support of a good cause, the Oliver Hazard Perry School activities.

Commodore Perry was famous for his watchwords on Lake Erie during the War of 1812 - “Don’t give up the ship.” and “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”

Tryouts for the South Boston Senior Babe Ruth will be held next week at King Field in Moakley Park. The dates will be Thursday May 21 at 5:30, Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24 at 5 P.M. To play you must be 16 before May 1 of this year. Anyone who turned 19 this year is also eligible .

We play a 18 game schedule during June and July and travel throughout eastern Mass. You should live in South Boston, South End, and parts of Dorchester that border Southie. There is a small fee to play. We supply uniforms and equipment. This is a rebuilding year and we need up to 12 new players. This gives every player a better opportunity to make the team than has happened in many years.

We also are in need of two assistants to coach Connor.

Artists Wanted for the Library’s Summer Art Festival Local artists, please note: The South Boston Branch Library’s 44th Annual Art Festival is now in the planning stages, and we invite you to become a part of it.
