TRANSPORTATION STUDY: Dorchester Avenue in SB

An Introduction Late last month, the Boston Planning and Development Agency (the BPDA) and the Boston Tra nspor tation Depa r tment (The BTD) hosted two virtual meetings, which were kickoffs for developing coherent plans to deal with transportation issues on the segment of Dorchester Avenue in South Boston. These virtual meetings, via ZOOM, were held on the evening of July 29 and at mid-day on July 30; they were identical so that the maximum number of attendees could be equally brought up to date. The timing of these identical meetings resulted from delays due to the Coronavirus/COVID19 pandemic. Public Meeting #1 on Dorchester Avenue transportation was originally to be an in-person meeting in March, 2020. Obviously, the pandemic

Interestingly, one of the key basis points for the transportation presentation was the four-yearold plan for Dorchester Avenue’s overall development. This plan was a true community effort in 2016, which was entitled “PLAN: South Boston Dorchester Avenue”. The outlines of that
plan’s area resemble a pregnant woodchuck (or “marmot”, if you prefer) sitting on her haunches while looking east. The current transportation plan covers a significantly larger area, but is centered around that first “PLAN”.
