The Cannabis/Marijuana Buffer Zone – A Commentary

R

ecently, South Boston Online read in Boston’s media that a move was afoot to reduce – or perhaps even eliminate – the buffer zone between authorized shops legally allowed to sell “cannabis”, which is actually “marijuana”.

This buffer zone is supposed to measure at least one-half (0.5) mile between any and all such shops.

Several more variances from this restriction have been requested from City of Boston authorities by potential vendors. We were told thar around the Downtown area, the City of Boston has allowed three such variances.

Perh a p s a few facts should come next: Cannabinoids are a large (over 100) family of hemp plants, one of which contains THC.

CBD is “cannabidiol”, which is sometimes confused with THC. CBD comes from other, lowTHC hemp plants and has a gentle, tranquilizing effect.

THC stands for “tetrahydrocannabinol”, the active ingredient in cannabis, a.k.a. marijuana and “pot”.

THC is the ingredient that gives its user the well-known marijuana “high”. In addition to smoking pot, THC can be ingested in oils, capsules, tinctu res, va riou s d rin k s, and edibles like candy. Cannabis Buffer Zone difficulties such as schizophrenia for instance. Frequent users can become dependent on the quite powerful THC “highs”.

This brief commentary deals only with THC and the businesses that sell cannabis/marijuana, which is illegal at the Federal level but was voted to be legal within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts several years ago.

Late last week, District 2 City Councilor Ed Flynn met with South Boston Online, shortly after he publicly condemned the move to eliminate the half-mile buffer requirement on pot shops.

Flynn represents most of South Boston and parts of Downtown, Chinatown, Back Bay, and the South End. According to him, 30 of the 53 allowable cannabis/ marijuana shop approvals in

Boston have already been issued.

The marketplace is getting very crowded – perhaps even saturated.

Flynn expressed his doubts about whether (or not), more cannabis shops are economically viable.

Flynn also brought up two specific complaints. First, cannabis/marijuana is being publicly used outside of many existing shops, which is not allowed; second, a few shops have already been opened at less than the half-mile buffer limits. There have been constant complaints about cannabis use in the parking lot around South Boston’s lone cannabis shop on K and First. Three shops in the center of Boston’s Downtown/ Back Bay areas already violate the half-mile buffer requirement.

Flynn feels that City Hall has not respected the residents of these neighborhoods. And he

feels strongly – very strongly – that the existing half-mile buffer requirements must be enforced, before any more cannabis/ m a r iju a n a e s t a b l i s h m e nt s can be licensed and opened.

Here at South Boston Online, in addition to existing complaints about cannabis/marijuana, we believe the long-term effects of cannabis/marijuana usage should be researched more thoroughly.

These ef fects a re mostly “unknown”, to say the least. For example, years ago, as far back as the 1960s, the THC content in cannabis/marijuana was around 2.5%. Now it has escalated to 12.5% or more – at least a five-fold increase. It’s much more powerful.

Has it now become harmful to your health as well? Furthermore, while cannabis/marijuana may not truly be “addictive”, it is extremely habit-forming. This dependency

Important New VERTEX Painkiller Is Approved According to many technical journals, doctors are excited about having a new nonopioid, non-addictive pain medicine to prescribe

ertex Pharmaceuticals is a worldwide biotechnology corporation. It was founded 35 years ago in Cambridge. It has now established its global headquarters on Fan Pier in South Boston’s Seaport District. In addition, Vertex has international headquarters in London along with commercial branches and research sites in continental Europe, Australia, Latin America, the Middle East, and other points in North America. More specifically, in its location at 50 Northern Avenue, Vertex is an integral part of South Boston’s Innovation District. And Vertex has been truly innovative.

In January of this year, Vertex announced that the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration)

had just approved a recently developed Vertex product – it’s a new type of painkiller Vertex has named “Journavx”.

According to trade/technical journals and` news releases, Journavx can treat various kinds of pain in adults, including moderate to severe pain and acute short-term pain. During its extensive test phases, Journavx also performed well after several types of surgeries, including cosmetic face surgery. It seems to act very quickly in relieving surgical pain. And it apparently gives more relief than over-thecounter medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Journavx’s chemical name is “suzetrigine”, which is a so-called “non-opioid painkiller”.

And that’s important – very important! Simply stated, opioid painkillers (such as Vicodin and the highly publicized Fentanyl opioid) work by intercepting and blocking pain signals inside a person’s brain. They do this quite well, but unfortunately, that

often leads to opioid addiction.

Journavx works differently. It blocks key pain channels at the nerves themselves, before the pain signals ever reach a person’s brain.

You should know why the Journavx technology will not cause addiction. As we stated above, that’s obviously ver y important. According to many technical journals, doctors are excited about having a new non- opioid , non- a d d ic t i ve pain medicine to prescribe.

There hasn’t been one of these developed since the 21st

Century began, 25 years ago.

There’s still a lot to be learned about non-opioid pain relievers like Journavx. Just how well does it work out in the field, on many different people. It’s also expensive – a standard dose of two Journavx tablets a day will cost about $30, but in part, that could be covered by insurance.

In any case, Vertex deserves congratulations for creating, developing, and marketing a new and useful painkiller – one that won’t cause people suffering from pain to become addicted.

Mayoral Candidate Josh Kraft Connects with South Boston Commuters

oston mayora l candidate Josh Kraft hit the streets of South Boston, stopping by the L Street and East Broadway bus stop to meet with local residents. The visit was part of his effort to get out and about in the neighborhood, a place he holds close to his heart.

“I started here way back in 1990 doing an outreach program for the Boys & Girls Club,” Kraft said. “I always love coming back to South Boston. It’s where my professional career really started.”

Kraft greeted commuters, emphasizing his commitment to being accessible. “I just want to meet and greet, say hello to some folks, let them know we’re around in

the communities,” he said.

Kraft pointed to his deep love for Boston and concerns about its current direction as reasons why he entered the mayoral race. “I love the city of Boston. I feel like it’s headed in the wrong direction,” he said. “My experience working with people, connecting with people — not just listening, but actually hearing people — are things the city needs to get it back on the right track.”

He highlighted key issues such as the affordability crisis in housing, declining trust in public schools, and worsen i ng t ra nspor t at ion challenges. “We want to create an administration that not

only listens and hears people, but in the end, we don’t want

to be about ideolog y. We want to be about results.”

oston City Councilor Ed Flynn joined concerned South Boston neighbors in announcing his opposition to the removal of on-site affordable housing units at the 776 Summer Street development. At the recent public meeting, Councilor Flynn’s office specifically expressed opposition to moving approximately 100 affordable housing units associated with the project offsite. Councilor Flynn has echoed the concerns of residents that he does not support a situation where a

contribution to the city’s Inclusionary Development Policy (IDP) affordable housing fund could potentially result in approximately 100 affordable housing units sent outside of the impacted area and South Boston.

Moreover, in such a densely populated neighborhood in South Boston, there is only so much land that can sustain the scale of development that could support 100 affordable housing units, while projects of similar size and

scale will already have their own IDP affordable housing requirements to meet.

“With our affordable housing crisis, I do not want to see a situation where this community benefit, and approximately 100 affordable units, are transferred outside of the impacted neighborhood of South Boston,” said Councilor Flynn. “Please spread the word to your family, friends and neighbors to submit their concerns to the Boston Planning Department

Dog Licensing Reminder

T

he Boston Parks a nd R e cre at ion Department’s Animal Care and Control Division reminds city dog owners that the annual deadline for licensing their pets is March 31, 2025. All dogs in Boston require a new license each year. This process can be completed online, by mail, or in-person at our upcoming licensing clinics.

All dogs over six months old must be licensed annually.

Owners are required to provide a copy of their dog’s current rabies certificate and proof of spaying or neutering (if applicable). Licensing fees are $15 for a neutered or spayed pet and $30 for an unaltered pet, with fees waived for service animals and residents aged 70 or older. Unlicensed pets are subject to a $50 fine.

Haley Walsh Appointed to Chinatown Trust Fund Committee

enator Nick Collins has appointed Haley Walsh to his seat on the Chinatown Trust Fund Committee (CTFC).

Established through legislation in Chapter 443 of the Acts of 1990, the Chinatown Trust Fund Committee was organized to make grants using development linkage funds to community-based organizations in and serving the community of Chinatown in Boston. As the Senator representing Chinatown, Senator

Collins has chosen Haley to represent him in his seat on the board.

“Haley is a trusted community leader with extensive experience on non-profit boards and foundations,” Senator Collins said.

“Her legislative and budget work in the First Suffolk District have given her a keen understanding of community development needs and her relationships with neighborhood leaders in Chinatown make her uniquely qualified to represent me on the Chinatown Trust Fund Committee.

I am grateful for her commitment and willingness to serve.”

Haley joins the committee with distinguished leaders across the Chinese-American community, including Hung Goon.

“Haley has been a great advocate for Chinatown throughout her public service career,” he said. “Her sincere interest and support for the well-being of the

Sports by the Numbers: February, 2025

by Rick Winterson The Super Bowl is over (Philadelphia Eagles, 40-20). No more NFL, except for trade and draft news until their exhibition games late in the summer. The Red Sox’s spring training camp has begun, but their home games in Fenway won’t open until Friday, April 4, with the National League’s St. Louis Cardinals – a reminder of 2013 World Series, maybe, or perhaps you might even recall the 1946 World Series. Celtics basketball has ceased regular season games as of yesterday evening, to make time for the NBA All-Star Game this weekend.

And the NHL has taken a two-week break during the Four Nations International Face-Off hockey tournament in Montreal and Boston (three of the seven Face-Off games are here in the TD Garden – two on Monday, February 17, and a championship

final on Thursday evening, February 20). The seven games consist of a six-game round robin series, capped by a seventh championship tilt. It’s an unusually epic event for international sports during the winter month of February.

Don’t miss it!

Anyhow, it’s time for a look at some detailed sports numbers – Super Bowl #59 first: Actually, Super Bowl #59 last Sunday was really over very early on. It was 24-ZIP in favor of the Eagles over the Kansas City Chiefs at half-time. Two interceptions led to a brief Eagles 34-ZIP lead in the 3rd quarter, which was the largest lead in any Super Bowl game over the last eight years. Eagles’ QB Jalen Hurts and a stingy defense prevailed. The 3rd quarter ended at 34-6 – a twopoint conversion attempt by the Chiefs had failed. Desperation was everywhere – Travis Kelce had no (as in 0) completions at all in the

first half. In his entire 12-season career, that had never happened to him before (his retirement is now rumored). And while this isn’t a number, the saddest of sad looks on Patrick Mahomes’s face during the second half let everyone know that Super Bowl #59 had gone down the tubes for the Chiefs.

The Celtics’ scoring numbers have returned. Last Saturday’s 131-104 blow-out of the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden was led by Jason Tatum at 40 points and Payton Pritchard, who sank 25 points from all distances and angles. They accounted for an even half of that win. Derrick White contributed a solid 17 points from the rim; six Celts were in double figures. Just to add salt to the wounds, Luke Kornet made all seven of his shots for 14 points, got 12 rebounds, and blocked three attempts by the Knicks.

And at a 103-85 final score, Monday’s game against the Miami

Heat, which ended the Celts’ current road trip, was another blow-out. Tatum at 33 and five other Celts in double figures ran up the winning numbers. The Celtics shot 53 (!) total attempts from the three-point arc and just 32 attempted two-pointers in the paint. Celtics’ Sixth Man Peyton Pritchard contributed six rebounds and six assists in the first half.

Meanwhile, Miami sank only 33% of their shots. And Miami was at home.

So far this season, the Celts have run up some odd numbers.

With a 22-6 record in away games, the Celtics have played much better on the road than at home.

Their win-loss record here in the TD Garden is just 16-10 as of this write-up. That’s unusual for any pro sports team, but especially so for the NBA’s basketball teams. Go figure!

Increasing Church Attendance Lately, from several sources, we have been hearing that attendance at local churches has been increasing. We are in a secular age so this is good news, of course. Similar messages have arrived from elsewhere, such as from the churches in Copley Square. Here in South Boston, both St. Augustine Chapel and Gate of Heaven Church have been said to be receiving more congregants. The Chapel was built in 1818 by Bishop Jean-Louis Cheverus in memory of Father Francis Matignon, who was the first Catholic priest assigned to Boston. It has been an active church ever since then. Gate of Heaven Church is the finest piece of architecture anywhere in South Boston, including the (much) newer buildings in the Seaport District. Its style is “Romanesque”, but gently pointed arches and buttresses foreshadow the Gothic architecture seen in many other Boston churches.

Highlights from Catholic Schools Week

outh Boston Catholic Academy celebrated Catholic Schools Week.

This is a nationwide celebration intended to showcase and emphasize the meaning behind the mission of Catholic education. This special time is dedicated to recognizing the value of Catholic education and coming together as a school community for meaningful and enjoyable activities. On Sunday, January 26 - SBCA students spoke at the weekend Masses at St. Brigid and Gate of Heaven Churches and shared their feelings about what it is like going to a Catholic School.

Students and a SBCA family also participated at the monthly 10:30 Sunday Family Mass at St. Brigid Church. They did a great job as Greeters and a K2A family did a wonderful job of bringing up the Gifts to Altar. Father Casey was the celebrant at this Mass who was assisted by Deacon Paul Castello.

It was also nice to see the many families that come downstairs to Cushing Hall for the monthly Coffee and Refreshments following this Mass.On Monday, January 27 - We Celebrated our Community: The students made special cards acknowledging and ref lecting on how different community members support our school and learning. Some included cards for

our FireFighters, Police, EMTs and to the Children’s Librarian Dani at the South Boston Branch Library.

On Tuesday, January 28 . “SBCA had a TAG day to raise money for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

This day has extra special meaning to one of our teachers, Mrs. Defelice as she just celebrated two years of No Evidence of Disease from stage 4a Cervical Cancer. She is a patient advocate for the nonprofit cervivor and a graduate from cervivor school.

SBCA students and staff were able to dress down, many wearing white and teal which are the two colors that represent Cervical Cancer Awareness. It was appropriate that it was done on a Tuesday as in the Cervivor community, they have Teal and White Tuesdays to raise awareness and this was the last one in January which makes it more significant. SBCA was able to raise over $1700! The Cervivor Community is so proud of them and thankful.” It was also Student Appreciation Day - Celebrating our Students: The students could pick a favorite flavored slushie during their lunch time....Quoting a student...”It was the best slushie ever!” Thank you Mr. Mike!
