The Cannabis/Marijuana Buffer Zone – A Commentary

ecently, South Boston Online read in Boston’s media that a move was afoot to reduce – or perhaps even eliminate – the buffer zone between authorized shops legally allowed to sell “cannabis”, which is actually “marijuana”. This buffer zone is supposed to measure at least one-half (0.5) mile between any and all such shops. Several more variances from this restriction have been requested from City of Boston authorities by potential vendors. We were told thar around the Downtown area, the City of Boston has allowed three such variances. Perh a p s a few facts should come next: Cannabinoids are a large (over 100) family of hemp plants, one of which contains THC.

CBD is “cannabidiol”, which is sometimes confused with THC. CBD comes from other, lowTHC hemp plants and has a gentle, tranquilizing effect. THC stands for “tetrahydrocannabinol”, the active ingredient in cannabis, a.k.a. marijuana and “pot”. THC is the ingredient that gives its user the well-known marijuana “high”. The Dedham Savings Community Foundation has made a grant to Julie’s Family Learning Program in South Boston. The grant funds will be used for technology updates to deliver high quality Adult Basic Education to over 200 hybrid adult learners, replace staff workstations and purchase interactive whiteboards. The interactive whiteboards will provide students and teachers with the ability to learn collaboratively, share files, access online resources and use additional educational software and tools to improve online learning. Julie’s Family Learning Program is a welcoming, inclusive organization that provides free supportive programs, resources, and educational services to help develop strong, successful families.
