In 1890, the Hotel Redondo opened overlooking the ocean near the present day pier. The City was becoming “The Place” for tourists. The Hotel Redondo, with its 18-hole golf course, lush landscaping, tennis courts and 225 luxurious rooms induced more visitors than ever before to venture to the coast. Because of prohibition, the $250,000 Hotel Redondo closed its doors and in 1925 was sold for scrap lumber--the price was $300. Redondo Plunge: The Redondo Beach Plunge, billed as the “largest indoor salt-water-heated pool in the world”, was built in 1909 by Henry Edward Huntington. Fourstories and Moorish in style, it housed three pools heated by Pacific Light and Power’s steam plant (originally built to generate electricity for the Red Cars). A tower, two diving boards, and a trapeze were features of the large main pool. Redondo Beach Racer: One of the popular tourist attractions was The Redondo Beach Lightning Racer roller coaster which had two parallel tracks, and riders had the sensation of racing those in the adjoining car. First opened to the public in 1913, the Lightning Racer was located on the beach just north of old Wharf One (and today’s Municipal Pier). Severely damaged by an extreme storm in March 1915, the coaster was demolished. Casino / Dance Pavilion Other Redondo Beach attractions adjacent to the Plunge included the Casino and Dance Pavilion / Auditorium. The first pavilion would be replaced by a grander pavilion in 1907. Redondo’s Salt Lake: The natural salt lake (to the left in picture ) was near Redondo Beach’s northern border with Hermosa Beach, in the area where the AES Redondo Beach Generating Station now stands. The spring-fed salt lake, about 200 yards wide and 600 yards long, was located about 200 yards inland from the ocean. Salt was mined from 1854 to 1881.

FOCUS ON THE SAND SECTION Manhattan Beach, CA - The Sand Section, located just south of Los Angeles, on one of the best beaches in the United States, is one of the most unique niche real estate markets in the country. PROJECTIONS After checking with one of California’s chief economists, local market experts, nay-sayers, and eternal optimists, all agreed that prices in the Sand Section will eventually go up, although the time-frame varied from 1 year to many years. Larry Miller The Man Behind a Good Night’s Sleep

What you may not know is that Miller is crazy in love with the South Bay and is putting the finishing touches on a custom home overlooking the ocean in south Redondo Beach. South Bay Digs spent a weekday morning with a well-rested Miller at his company’s Gardena headquarters, where snoozing on the job is not an option, but laughter is mandatory. SOUTH BAY DIGS: How did you sleep last night? LARRY MILLER: Slept like a baby. What made you decide to build your new home in Redondo Beach? I can’t imagine not living in South Bay. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, especially Redondo Beach. From my house, it’s a block to the bank, and a block to 10 good restaurants. I used to live in Manhattan Beach, but it gets so congested there. I love to entertain and I have basketball parties and Halloween parties. I want people to be able to come to my house and find a place to park.

What is it that you most enjoy about your work? The people. I love my people. I get here at 6:30 in the morning and it’s like a family atmosphere. We’re a big business that hasn’t lost sight of humanity and the individual. You spend more time with your coworkers than you do with your family, your wife, your kids. We work hard, we service the customer, we have fun and we laugh. Speaking of laughter, Sit ‘n Sleep’s radio ads have gained a level of notoriety, but I understand that your new advertising strategy is more informational than humorous. Why the shift? What our ads have done so far is let people know we’re big, we’ve got a sense of humor and we give great service. What they don’t know is that we use a consultative approach in finding out what their specific sleep issues are. [In our stores] we have the Body Diagnostic Machine, a computerized system with sensors on the bed. We get information from the consumer — whether they sleep alone, their relative age, where their pain is — and enter it into the system via touch screen. Different beds are recommended based on their input. Our aim is to help them get a deep, restorative sleep. Most of our population is sleep-deprived.

Unless you’ve spent the last several years under a rock, you’re probably all too familiar with the Sit ‘n Sleep radio commercials featuring Larry Miller, the company’s president and CEO, and the fictional accountant who bemoans Miller’s radical pricing strategy with a cringe-inducing whine, which we’ll spare you here. Love them or hate them, the ads have played a key role in branding Sit ‘n Sleep as a leading mattress retailer in Southern California.
When did you launch the technology? Three years ago, and we’ve been improving it. We’ve put millions of dollars into research. It’s also reduced exchanges. It used to be 1 in 13 comfort exchanges, now it’s down to 1 in 30. Nobody wants to get
something they have to return, so it’s our job to make sure our customers are satisfied. What are your top three tips for someone who’s in the market for a new mattress? The first and most important is to bring your partner. Usually women are the main drivers in buying a mattress, so I tell them, bring your husband and once we’ve measured him, he can go watch football. Come when you’re not stressed. It takes at least 30 minutes to measure and pick the right bed. I would also find the right pillow first, or bring your pillow from home if it’s the most comfortable. The most common mistakes people make are keeping a bed too long or having the wrong pillow. Pillows should be changed once a year. What’s the oddest thing you’ve seen with people shopping for mattresses? A business partner was in one of our stores working with a couple who were trying out beds. A woman walked past the store, looked in the window, did a double take and came running into the store, yelling and swearing at the couple. She looked at the woman on the bed and said, ‘You were in my wedding four weeks ago and now you’re here, kissing my husband?’ He was buying a bed for his mistress.
and we completely gutted it. There will be 50 feet of glass looking out over the ocean. I wanted a lot of open space because I want the ocean to be the star of the house. Workshop or wine room? Wine room. Home gym or home theater? Neither. I’ve got like an 80-inch TV in the greatroom and a 70-inch one in my office, which overlooks the ocean. Smart phone or iPad? I’m an iPad guy and an iPhone guy. [Pulls out his iPhone] I’ve got some pictures of the house in here –oh, here’s a picture at a Lakers game. Nice seats! I love going to Lakers games. I go to almost every home game. Here are some pictures of my kids. What a great-looking family. My daughter is self-assured and strong. Beauty’s okay, but character is what’s important. As you get older, let’s face it — beauty fades. But you never lose your character, your intelligence or your integrity.
That sounds straight out of a bad sitcom. It’s true! Switching gears, I hear your company is heavily involved in charities. I was born with nothing. At one point in my life I barely made enough to feed my family. I was ashamed and I promised myself that if I ever came into money, I would help other people. It’s a blessing for me to be able to give. My dream is to start a foundation that takes people off the streets, funds their education and gets them started in a business or teaches them a trade. It wouldn’t be a $12-an-hour job, but something where they can be independent and successful. For me to write a check doesn’t build self-esteem and confidence. Starting a business does. There are a lot of people out there who need help, not a handout. If you had the opportunity for a do-over on a business decision, what would that be? I’ve made millions of dollars worth of mistakes. There’s nothing that I regret that much, because mistakes have taught me what to do. The best lessons I’ve learned were from mistakes I’ve made. If I hadn’t made any mistakes, I wouldn’t have learned any lessons. The only thing I do regret is not having had enough time for my kids when they were little. I was working seven days a week and I missed a lot of soccer games.

Describe your life philosophy in three words. Early to bed, early to rise, work real hard and advertise! [Laughter] Okay, a wink and a laugh and a positive attitude. I’m a pretty happy person. What can you tell us about your new house? About 30 years ago I was at a party in South Redondo and I fell in love with the view of the ocean. It’s an area where you’re at the top of a bluff and you can see Point Dume to the tip of Palos Verdes. The sunsets are gorgeous. The lot became available about a year and a half ago.
