We hope you enjoy the matchday experience at Bobby Hancocks Park.

What a difference a week makes in football. We lost our two-year unbeaten league record at home to Summertown in bizarre fashion to then react

superbly with a fantastic overall team performance away to Garsington.

I’m never one to reflect at a time when you are on such an incredible run but now that we have been defeated at home in the league for the first time in over two years its only right that us as a club acknowledge what an outstanding achievement it has been. We have broken every club record including; 20 straight wins in all competitions, 25 competitive game unbeaten run and an unbeaten home league record that had lasted from September 2019 to September 2021.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the current players and staff and those that have represented the club over the last two years and now left the club.

What has been achieved over the last two years will forever be ingrained in the club’s history and leave a lasting legacy.

After losing a game its all about the reaction. I haven’t had to utter the words to the players that we needed a reaction for such a long time.

When you are on such an incredible unbeaten run the pressure mounts, motivation for the opposition can’t get any higher and the target on your back becomes

enormous week after week. It becomes more than just beating the opposition and you end up playing against yourself. Now we have been beaten in the league a massive weight has been lifted off our shoulders and we now move forwards with a clean slate.

For whatever reason last week at Garsington we certainly threw off the shackles and played with an energy and freedom I have been asking for. After a successful period I have said previously that there is farm more expectation.

Its a little unfair on a new group of players

outgoings which was always going to be the case. The rebuild was never going to happen over a pre-season but as always happens in September players become available.

We’re now in good shape squad-wise and have good depth. Its always been about putting a squad together that is totally committed. I feel we now have that in regards to training and matchdays.

that are still getting used to myself, a new club and new teammates. Its easy to forget that when we relaunched the first team in 2019 we lost four of our first eight in all competitions. Then, from November 2019 the rest is history.

There is always a process but the signs look promising. The players are understanding more and more how I want us to play. They are getting fitter and sharper with every passing week and really starting to come together on and off the pitch.

There have been some incomings and

the best versions of themselves.

They bring their A-game so again, we will have to perform very well and build on last week, which was the minimum in terms of how we go about our work out of possession.

Again, I am looking for a reaction. This time at home in front of everyone associated with the club.

ASH KNIGHTS LETTER FROM THE CAPTAIN

Welcome back to Bobby Hancocks Park for what we hope will be a positive result.

Losing 5-0 in our last home game against Summertown AFC really hurt. For some of the lads who have been at this club since the reform it hasn’t been something we’ve had to deal with on too many occasions.

Credit to Summertown, they punished our mistakes and when you don’t take chances you will get punished, and that’s what happened.

However, the way we collapsed after the second goal went in wasn’t acceptable. Too many mistakes from basic errors.

Also, our discipline going down to 10 men let us down, and I would like to think that it wouldn’t happen again the way it did. I always pick out the positives, even when you think there’s not many to take after a heavy loss. The positive was that you could tell it hurt the lads and how much we didn’t want to feel like that again. Its a reality check in what is a new league and a new squad of players.

The lads were buzzing to put things right last week against Garsington. For me, after losing a game the way we did the next game couldn’t have come quick enough. We needed a reaction and last week we did that.

To win 5-0 away from home and keep a clean sheet was just what the doctor ordered. We are a team that like to play out from the back but it was clear we

needed to just go back to basics and play in the oppositions half. We also knew we would need to work twice as hard off the ball and with a high press.

Welcome Jay and Ryan to the Southam family. Both of whom have settled in nicely to the group. Both are quality signings and you can already see in training that both will improve us in the attacking areas.

The commitment to training has been superb. Another good session this week which will put us in good shape for today’s game.

SAINTS STUMBLE AGAINST SUMMERTOWN

Southam United 0 Summertown Stars 5 Oxfordshire League, Premier Division A goal up at the break, Summertown hit four more in the second half to send Southam United crashing to a 5-0 defeat to end their unbeaten start to the season.

Free-scoring Summertown had hammered bottom club Marston Saints 6-2 the previous week and they went in front here through Luke Warmington in just the fourth minute. Daniel Long had a chance to level in the 24th, but his shot went across the Summertown keeper and wide and, two minutes later, Wendel Moyo got on to a cross from Ricky Barby, but also sent his effort the wrong side of the post.

Ricky Barby was in the thick of things again, skillfully working the ball on to his left foot and delivering a shot that caused the keeper problems with Long’s follow-up going just over the crossbar.

Saints went close to an equalizer just after the hour when Shane Osborne forced a good save, but were never in it after that as a hat-trick from Daniel Cadman, his second in successive matches, and another from Henry Horton finished the home side off.

Any hopes of a revival had evaporated with the sending off of Pat O’Brien in the 73rd minute when the score was at 3-0 and, down to ten men, Saints conceded two more after that.

“It was a very disappointing loss, our first at home for more than two years” said manager Richard Kay. “We started the game poorly to go one down, but should have got level by half time with the number of chances we created. I can’t explain what happened after that, but the wheels and just about everything else came off.

I’m not going to panic, but there will be changes.”

THE REACTION RICH WANTED

Garsington FC 0 Southam United 5 Oxfordshire League, Premier Division Manager Rich Kay got the response he was looking for after the previous week’s heavy home defeat to Summertown Stars, as Southam United put five goals past Garsington to get their season back on track.

Despite being forced into a substitution after only 15 minutes when Luca Lenihan went off feeling unwell, two goals from Ricky Barby and another from new signing Ryan Harris saw Saints 3-0 to the good at the break. They built on that in the second half with vice captain Simon Barby weighing in with a brace to put the match beyond doubt.

“A fantastic reaction to last week’s disappointing result and, overall, a very good team performance away from home in terrible conditions” said Kay. “There was no panic at what was a freak result, with a few changes in personnel and a back-to-basics approach that has served us so well over the last couple of years. Our off-the-ball work and intensity was at the level I’ve been demanding and allowed us to press and play a lot more football in the

oppositions half.

We scored five but, in all honesty, we could and should have scored a lot more, such was our complete dominance of the game.

Its easy to forget that, when we relaunched in 2019, we lost four of our first eight games in all competitions, but then went on to go unbeaten for two years. There is always a process when building a new team, but I would have settled for three league wins out of four whilst we are a work in progress.

However, the signs are promising and, with additions made to the squad, we will only get stronger and stronger in the coming weeks.”

Saints are at home to Bure Park on Saturday, kick off 2:30pm.

Ricky Barby is a familiar name to most Southam supporters, but he hopes we’ll be seeing his name even more this season. The starting XI stalwart discusses having a point to prove against Garsington, aiming to improve his goal tally and the friendly rivalry he and brother, Simon, share on the pitch.

Four matches into the 2021/22 season and its been a mixed bag as far as team performances and results. How are you feeling about where the team is right now?

I’m happy with where we are at the minute. The team is still gelling together and we can only get better. We sit in a good position and hope to compete at the very top.

Last weekend the team showed impressive character in bouncing back from a tough loss to Summertown and in turn inflicting 5 away goals on Garsington. Did it feel a bit like you had a point to prove?

Yeah, definitely. We wanted to get a good result, especially after losing and hopefully start a good run of form and keep the winning mentality going.

You personally scored the first two goals and picked up Player of the Match.

How did it feel on the day?

Its always good to get on the score-sheet, and of course to get Man of the Match, but for me its more important that the team gets the 3 goals.

Did this match against Garsington feel a bit like a must-win fixture? Something to really get the season started for Southam

and start building some positive momentum?

It was a very important game in terms of putting on a performance and we knew as a team if we play like we know we can then the result will come.

As one of the longer serving squad members you’ve seen some changes in the past, but probably not as many as this past off-season. Do you feel the squad is starting to come together? Or is it still a work-in-progress?

do you think are improving and what will supporters see from the team over the next handful of matches?

The team is strong in all areas and has depth within all positions. We hop to give the fans an exciting experience with our attacking quality and “neversay-never” attitude.

How is it sharing the pitch with your brother?

We are still getting to know each other on and off the pitch, but there’s a good feeling within the team morale, and it will only get better with more games to be played.

Yeah I would say there is definitely a sort of rivalry there, or bragging rights, when it comes to goal scoring, but we always get the best out of each other on the pitch.

Rich mentioned that the team is getting stronger and stronger and that from his view things look promising. What areas

WELCOME TO SOUTHAM The Saints have added some new faces to the squad this summer with Scott Lindley and Adam Neale among them - Here’s what you need to know about the pair midfield role when he was moved from winger to his Scott Lindley now preferred position in The Saints added strength in the middle of the pitch. While it might have been friend, Shane Osborne, who convinced him to come to training and see for himself, it was the squad, brilliant facilities and positive opportunities that ultimately led to him staying.

“Everyone in the squad is highly talented and have made me feel very welcome, which has enabled me to settle in quickly.

The club as a whole is ran very professionally...I’m excited to see what we can achieve as a club this season.”

The former Rugby Town junior started his career playing in goal. As he made the transition to mens football he joined Rugby FC as a keeper and quickly realised the outpitch was where he really wanted to be.

However, his most cherished memory to-date includes featuring in the final of the Coventry Charity Cup for Coventry Alvis in 2019 which was played at Ricoh Arena in front of a proper crowd including his biggest supporter in his mother, who sadly passed away in 2020.

While on a brief hiatus from playing for Coventry United Scott joined Rich Kay, who was managing Leamington Hibernian and got a taste for the coach’s approach and style. After only ever playing for MFL sides Lindley was easily convinced to re-join Kay after being able to see the professional setup, grounds and future aims here at Southam United.

“This is a massive club, one that should be competing at a much higher level than Step 7, so it was exciting for me

Scott praised the Southam environment for allowing the players to achieve there best, and found that while it is still a new squad, everyone has been extremely welcoming and some of the nicest lads he’s played with.

Not only has Lindley found success on the pitch, but he’s also done so as a DJ playing house music in bars and clubs, as well as an adventurer and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2016.

Rich Says: “Scott is a player I had at Hibs and has gone on to have a very long a successful non-league career. Scott is the most experienced player at the club and along with his football ability I knew his experience and attitude would bring a lot to the changing room.

Scott’s demeanor around the club is exemplary and sets the standard of how you should conduct yourself in a team environment. Scott is getting fitter and sharper with each passing week and is a valuable member of an increasingly competitive squad”

Its taken a months worth of training to really get Adam up to speed physically but he has already shown in recent games to be a very dominant centre-half. Adam’s attitude and commitment has been first-class and like all of the squad a very coach-able player. BURE PARK FC

Today Southam United welcomes Bure Park FC to Bobby Hancocks Park for what will surely be an exciting fixture.

In Bure Park’s last time out the Bicester side were disappointed at home in a 1-3 loss. Southam’s first opponent of the season, Launton FC, scored two second-half goals to secure the win against Bure Park.

The 11th in the league table side will be looking to get back to where they started the season, winning 2-1 against Eynsham Association, with goals from Rowen

Chappell, their current leading goalscorer, and Fred Beaty.

Bure Park will also be looking to their leading scorer from last year, Jack Hornett, who netted 12 in 11 matches, and new signing, Mike Spaull, to provide the necessary reinforcements to pull them back up the table.

After finishing the abbreviated 2020/21 season in 4th place, both teams today will have their sights set on nabbing all 3 points and establishing a strong run into a busy autumn schedule.
