I would like to welcome the players, management and committee of Marston Saints to Bobby Hancocks Park for today’s league game. We hope you enjoy the matchday experience at BHP. It feels like a long time since we last played at home in the league. A lot has happened since our last home league game against Bure Park where we narrowly lost to Bicester with a makeshift, bare 11,

but then reacted superbly to beat Halse away from home Then a superb midweek cup performance to beat higher league opposition in Coventry Copeswood to put us through to the last eight of the Coventry Telegraph cup.

Realistically moving to a new league I couldn’t have really asked for a better start with a new group of players. I’ve said all along our main goal is to get promoted back to step 6 which is the level the club dropped out of the Midland league four years ago.

It’s a big month for us as a group and club.

We need to keep picking up points in the league to cement our position in the top five promotion places then turn our attention to the cups.

November is very much cup month for us where we play in the Coventry Charity cup, Birmingham vase and our OSL league cup respectively. We are already in one cup quarter final so the aim will very much be to try and make it three cup quarter finals and the last 16 of the Birmingham Vase come the end of the month.

Unlike previous seasons where I have prioritized competitions, with the quality and depth of squad we now have I really want to have a go in all five competitions.

That doesn’t mean we can realistically win all five but the aim is to go as far as we can in

I’ve told the players we are now it that period where we have to have a laser sharp focus week on week. It doesn’t matter who the opposition are or what competition we play in. We set the bar high with the performance against Copeswood. Now we are starting to settle as a squad with more continuity and quality additions, the focus is on maintaining a consistent high level of performance.

Sports who are a Step five club. It was a fantastic team performance. Full of energy, attacking quality and excellent defensive organisation.

The team spirit of this group of players is the driving factor. The team spirit is incredible. I’m now seeing the fruits of so much hard work on the training pitch and a confidence and belief in the process.

I’m never one to say the aim is to win the league at the start of any season but my expectations as manager of this club is to challenge. If we fall short that is football but collectively the drive and ambition has to be there to set the bar high.

Halse who at that time were sitting 2nd and had yet to lose a game. It was a real gritty team performance winning 1-0, and keeping that impressive clean sheet away from home. It was pleasing especially after losing to the league leaders Bicester Hallions the week before.

I felt after losing against the league leaders Bicester that it really ignited us as a group. It was a tough week. We almost had to forfeit the fixture as we didn’t have enough players to play but I think for me it’s a turning point. It sums up the kind of players we have at this club. Players that will never give up and run through brick walls for one another. Let’s not forget we don’t get paid and we play for the love of the game.

Last game against Coventry Copsewood in the Telegraph was, for me, the best team performance so far this season. We went into the game as most definitely the underdogs. A quality team from a league above which we knew from start we would

A VICTORY TO MOVE INTO SECOND

0 Southam United 1 Oxfordshire League, Premier Division There was just one Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division fixture on Saturday, but it proved to be an important one for Southam United, as a Jay Lawes strike in the 54th minute was enough to see them to a 1-0 win at second-placed Halse United and leapfrog them in the table.

Southam welcomed back Pat O’Brien after suspension and Lawes, who was missing from the previous week’s side, amongst a number of changes. After a goalless first half, Saints struck early in the second period through Lawes, as the former Rugby Borough striker pounced from a corner after Kieran Brady’s shot had been tipped over the bar by home keeper Ryan Watt.

Saints keeper Lewis Hudson kept them in the match with a good save from a free kick on the hour and, despite a late rally from the home side, they held out under pressure for the win that sees them sit four points behind unbeaten leaders Bicester Hallions after seven matches.

“That was a very pleasing performance and result” said manager Richard Kay.

“We have played some tough away games and come through a tricky period when we have been depleted and, at times, down to the bare bones. Our back four were brilliant today and that makes four clean sheets from seven.”

“Although we lost to leaders Bicester Hallions last week, the gap is down to four points and we still have to play them at home.”

ELITE DEVELOPMENT CAMP SHINES

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL FOOTBALL TALENT Southam United Academy lead Michael Davis has hailed the success of the latest 2-day Elite Development Camp (‘EDC’) at the club, aimed a recognising future talent and raising the bar in academy football.

Promising players from the Coventry and Warwickshire area, including many who already play within Southam United’s junior teams were invited to Bobby Hancocks Park for the two-day intense course. The focus was on transitional play and pressing as a unit, topics vital to the modern player. The players received topical coaching as well as continued support with strength and conditioning, psychological skills training, nutritional guidance, and tactical positioning feedback. The October camp followed a similar one that took place in the summer, with a further activity planned for the Christmas holidays.

During the two days, the players were coached by Southam United First Team Manager Richard Kay and U15s coach Kyle Ferguson, both of whom delivered brilliant, enjoyable, and engaging sessions to their group. The sessions also helped showcase the coaches’ skills, as well as the skills of the players.

Commenting on the camp, Mike said: “These camps provide local talent the opportunity to shine. I firmly believe that nurturing promising players, will not only help improve the calibre of players at the club, but will also develop football on the whole for the local area and surrounding leagues. Both camps have been a residing success, with the feedback received from both players and parents being outstanding. I’d like to say thank you to all the parents, players and coaching staff involved in these camps.

They are the ones who make them happen and another thank you for believing in our development philosophy here at the Southam United.”

First Team Manager Richard Kay added: “It was great to work with the club’s U15s and U16s at the October camp. The collective attitude of the group was spot on. Mike has done a superb job stretching back to the last academic year and throughout the pandemic. We have already seen the majority of the students from last year go onto secure places at University and in Abby’s case earn herself a scholarship to play Women’s college football in America. Half a dozen from the academy set up have already broken into the first team, or are now playing regular non-league football elsewhere.

“With an OFSTED rating as good as the local sixth forms and colleges it’s a great opportunity for individuals to combine full time football with a high academic programme. There is a clear pathway to the first term and with the prospect of the introduction of our new development team next season that will run alongside the academy and first team, the future of our junior players and local talent looks bright.”

The camp was, again, at full capacity weeks prior it’s commencement with the number of applicants for places growing. As it stands at the moment the camps are exclusively for year 10/11 players (15/16 years old) and based on an invitation only policy. The projected plan is to be able to run similar activities each half term. The next EDC being scheduled for the 20th/21st December.

Alex Skidmore is back with Southam United and showing he’s as hungry as ever for the team to be successful. It may be the ‘lonliest position on the pitch’, but this keeper is enjoying his time with a squad where the focus and team spirit is at an all-time high.

To some supporters you are probably a familiar face as this is your second stint with the Southam United. How does it feel to be back with the club?

I’m really enjoying it. It’s a great setup, and a fantastic group to be a part of.

Obviously some of the players I knew last time have moved on, but there’s a great energy around the place, and the club is moving in the right direction. I think Rich has done a very good job of assembling a group of players who gel together and are willing to fight for one another on the pitch.

What brought you back to Southam?

In my first stint here Rich had only just brought me through the youth setup, as a backup to Coxy, and due to the lack of cup competitions I wouldn’t have gotten game time, and didn’t feel it was the right place for me to grow. I had a year at Rugby Borough where I got plenty of first team action which allowed me to develop, so it felt like I was ready to come back to Southam.

The team is starting to hit their stride and is stringing together some great results.

What’s the feeling in the team?

There’s always a really good buzz in the changing room, and everyone always puts in 110% whether its training or game day.

It’s a great group to be a part of as everyone

is enjoying their football and want to do whatever they can to help the team.

What was the process of you becoming a goalkeeper? Have you always played that position?

One of the best parts of being a goalkeeper is the additional pressure, as you know that everything you do directly influences the game. Although this obviously has its downsides, it also means you can secure your side the 3 points, which is the best feeling ever.

As recently as last year I also played outfield for my local Sunday side as I’ve always enjoyed getting stuck in.

However playing in goal became my primary focus around the age of 12, when I was playing for Solihull Moors. I had filled in as goalkeeper a few times and enjoyed it, and felt that it was the right time to make the switch. I had several years of high level coaching from Pete Riches, which really developed me as a keeper. Since then I’ve enjoyed it more and more, and feel really comfortable with my decision to become a keeper.

What are the best parts of being a

This year the team has two great keepers, yourself and Lewis. This position is unique in that only one can start each match, yet you both train together regularly and support and encourage each other on the pitch.

Obviously as a footballer I want to be playing every game, as it is what I love.

However, it makes it a lot easier when the other keeper is your friend as you also want to see them enjoy their football and play as well as they can.

Lewis is a brilliant keeper, and we have a very good relationship, which helps both of us develop as we have different strengths. I know that whoever starts, it is what’s best for the team, and that’s all that matters.

One of the most important parts of being a goalkeeper is being able to communicate with your defence, as you have the best view of the pitch. This organisation is far more important than any one save because a well-organised team is far harder to break down. The preparation has been fantastic as always, because the team really buys into what we’re trying to build this season. The Copsewood victory in particular has given the squad a lot of confidence because it was a brilliant performance and showed that we can deliver against a higher level team. The whole squad is really looking forward to this set of fixtures as we know that we can show what we are capable of.

You’ve been carrying a bit of an injury, can you provide an update?

I can’t wait to be back out on the pitch, and want to be there as soon as possible. I’ve had a few sessions with the physio and my shoulder is improving, so I’m hoping to be back before the end of November.

WELCOME TO SOUTHAM The Saints have added some new faces to the squad this summer with Scott Lindley and Adam Neale among them - Here’s what you need to know about the pair

Jay Lawes It was big news when this former Rugby Borough player signed for Southam United, and he’s been writing headlines ever since. With 5 goals in 3 matches, and a hat-trick on his home debut, Jay is a very exciting addition to an already strong Southam side.

Lawes started his football career playing at Admirals when he was 5. A few years later at age 7 he signed for Coventry City after also having trials at clubs like Leicester and Aston Villa.

It wasn’t until he played a

year for Mount Nod after being released from Coventry City that he decided to step away from football.

But coming back to the game seemed to always be in the cards for the sharp-shooting forward.

“I started playing again at seventeen on a Sunday with some mates and then joined Rugby FC a few years later”.

Like a few members of the current Southam squad, Jay left Rugby FC after the merge with Borough, and has now found a new chapter at Bobby Hancocks Park.

Supporters will be used to seeing Lawes in front of

Ryan Harris It doesn’t take long to see that Southam’s newest defensive addition is full of energy and passion for the game. Not only has he already found a permanent home in the Saint’s back-line, but he even scored in his debut for the club. Its easy to see that Ryan’s move to Southam will be a positive one.

A long-time Rugby Town player, Harris started for the club at the age of 4, working from mini football through the age groups, MJPFL team and eventually the youth team. He found success, winning a fair few trophies in his long spell with Rugby Town, and has fond memories of not only the very first one but also the team trophies at Rugby Town when they won the double in their first season in the Cov Minor League A.

Positionally Harris seems to find himself enjoying life on the right side of the pitch in a wing role. Having great pace its no surprise that he’s found success at both the right win and right back positions.

“I would like to say I’m a right winger, however, most people that know me and have played with me will say I’m a right back.

“Well, they say that right backs are failed wingers, but I would say playing right back and right wing came about from being a fast player and knowing the game well enough to know how to play both positions...Plus I love a good tackle”.

After Rugby FC folded Ryan was looking for a few club to join and listened when friends suggested Southam.

“They mentioned Southam and that the

goal, causing problems for opposing goalkeepers, but his versatility is what will prove to be a very valuable asset.

“My preferred position is the number 10, but I do also enjoy playing up top. I started my career playing up front and then moved to left-wing. I then spent most of my time at Coventry as a left-back”.

Its easy to see that Jay is very comfortable on the pitch, and that might come from having played against some of the best, and on some big stages.

Having the opportunity to play against teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Aston Villa and playing tournaments in venues such as St. Georges Park, has not only provided valuable experience, but he describes these moments as some of the best moments of his career.

After a few matches for

Rugby Borough Lawes found he wasn’t enjoying his football and the small contingency of former Borough players who had moved to Southam encouraged him to try out life as a Saint.

“Going to the ground and seeing the setup, the manager and the players helped my decision to join them.

“The team at Southam is full of quality players that were very welcoming. They are a great bunch of lads and we have gelled really well as a team in our opening games, and it was displayed in our cup game against Coventry Copsewood the other week.”

Everyone following Southam United is excited to see the heights that Jay Lawes will reach this season, and opposing teams will be sure to fear his goal scoring prowess.

“Jay has settled really well. I had all but signed Jay in the summer to replace Levi as our number 9 but i had to be patient to finally get him.

No question he has been a great signing and has made a big impact already with his general play and goal return. It was important I took my time in replacing Levi with the right quality and profile of player. Jay has hit the ground running and is really enjoying the environment and his football. The Southam number 9 shirt is historically a big shirt to wear. Some great forwards have worn the shirt, none more so than our record club goalscorer and club legend Bobby Hancocks.

Today Southam United welcomes Marston Saints to Bobby Hancocks Park for their first meeting of the season.

The teams were meant to play in the first match of the season, but due to Covid issues Marston needed to postpone the match to today’s date.

Both teams will be eager to pick up points as they make up their game in hand. Marston, currently sitting last in the league table, will be looking for their first win of the season and a jumping off point for starting this next phase of their season.

The Oxfordshire side found themselves

in top position in the table after 10 matches last autumn, as well as finding success in 2019/20 when they finished second in the table before pandemic restrictions halted play.

Marston will be without last season’s leading goal scorer Nick Thorne, who tallied 10 goals in 10 apperances, as well as management team Matty Jacob and Luke Cuff.

They will instead rely on current leading goal scorer, Liam Powell, who has netted 3 times in 6 matches for the Saints.
