SOUTHAM UNITED
IT’S FOUR-SOME FROM SOUTHAM by David hucker
Southam United 4 Marston Saints 1 Oxfordshire League, Premier Division After a week off, Southam United returned to Oxfordshire Senior League action on Saturday with a comfortable 4-0 win over Marston Saints at Bobby Hancocks Park. Sam Dunn, signed from Long Buckby, made his debut at right back in place of Ryan Harris but, otherwise, Saints were unchanged from the side that had beaten Coventry Copsewood the week before. Two goals to the good at the interval, they added two more in the second half to consolidate second place in the table four points behind unbeaten leaders Bicester Hallions who were in cup action. Attacking from the off, Saints had their first shot in just the fourth minute, but Kieran Brady’s effort was taken easily by Marston’s keeper, Luca Dicarlo. In the 18th minute, Jay Lawes created space on the right to get the ball into the penalty area, but Simon Barby’s shot went just wide. Their persistence paid off, however, as two minutes later, Ricky Barby put them ahead with a strike from the edge of the area and they doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time from a Simon Barby penalty after Lawes was brought
down by Dicarlo. It took just five minutes into the re-start for the Saints to add a third when Brady’s cross from the left found Lawes who placed his header perfectly past Dicarlo. Two minutes later, Ashley Knights went on a run into the penalty area, but his shot as saved by the busy Dicarlo who then blocked a Ross Feasey diving header. It was all over in the 82nd minute as Lawes struck again from just outside the penalty area to make it 4-0, although there was time for Marston’s Finley Bruton to have a long range shot on goal, but Saints keeper Lewis Hudson had it well covered.
