Southam United went on a goal spree at Bure Park, putting seven past their hosts, with Melvin Mauritson (pictured) grabbing four, to complete their Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division away fixtures in some style.

Leading scorer Jay Lawes put them on their way with the opener in just the fifth minute and, three minutes later, Mauritson doubled their advantage with the first of his haul. It was 3-0 in the 13th minute as Mauritson hit the target again before Lawes got his second in the 24th minute to add to the home side’s woes. Mauritson completed his hat-trick in the 35th minute to give Saints a 5-0 half-time lead.

There was to be no respite for Bure Park after the break as Ethan Champkins added a sixth in the 56th minute and, although they pulled one back in the 74th, Mauritson was on the mark again with ten minutes remaining. Saints did concede a second five minutes later, but it was a result that sets them up for a grandstand finish to the season.

With Kennington Athletic only drawing at home to Summertown Stars, they now need just a point from their final match against Halse United to finish runners-up to Bicester Hallions.

“Another top result and performance on the road” said manager Richard Kay.

“Again, our football was top drawer. We have worked very hard in training to develop our patterns of play and I’m now really seeing the results of the many hours of training and coaching. Along with our excellent football, we have a razor-sharp cutting edge at the top end of the pitch.

The front four were unplayable with a special mention going to Melvin who scored four goals. He’s another young player plucked from Sunday football that I knew was another rough diamond and he has made huge progress since coming to the club, striking up a formidable partnership with Jay Lawes.”
