Firstly, Happy New Year to everyone. I hope everyone enjoyed a great Xmas.

It’s now 2022. The year Marty Mcfly went into the future in ‘Back To The Future: Part 2’.

Were not at the stage yet with hover boards or where cars can fly, and there was definitely no mention of a global pandemic in the movie!

I would like to welcome again to BHP the

management, players and committee of Summertown. We played them earlier in the season in one of the strangest games I’ve ever managed.

It was a very tight game up until the 70th minute with the result in the balance. We then had a player sent off and imploded to end up losing 5-nil. My joint highest league defeat as a manager. The other being away at Peterborough Sports who are now in the promotion mix to be promoted to the Conference North.

I do like Summertown’s approach. They are an all-or-nothing team. They are the highest scorers in the league and play attacking football. This has probably led to them losing games as well along the way but it’s an approach I really identify with.

Since being manager of Southam we have only drawn one competitive game in two and a half seasons. I’m always prepared to lose games in order to win a games. In the next few weeks I will manage my 50th game as Southam United Manager.

to win the game and progress to the Presidents cup quarter final.

It’s been great to have a winter break. As I have said previously, running a club and managing the first team during a pandemic has been challenging to say the least.

It’s been mentally draining at times with all the restrictions, covering match day costs and rebuilding the squad. A lot has been out of my control with the pandemic and a lot will continue to be out of my control.

It’s been frustrating but I’m very relaxed going into the second half of the season with the mindset of just accepting whatever

challenges are thrown at us.

It was great to get back to training and as it stands after training a full squad of twenty to select from. However a number of the squad are waiting on PCR test results so again match day planning will have to flexible.

ASH KNIGHTS LETTER FROM THE CAPTAIN

First of all, I would like to wish the supporters and all involved with the club a Happy New Year.

It’s been a long 4 weeks since we last had a game so it’s nice to finally get back to business in what we hope will be an even better year for all involved at Southam United.

The Christmas break is always nice to spend with friends and family and to drink and eat ridiculous amounts.

However, having 4 weeks off with no training and your fitness can somewhat suffer, and for some also the waist band. It was good to blow the cobwebs off at training this week and finally kick a ball.

Our target this year is to try and stay more

focused and switched on for the whole 90 minutes and to cut individual mistakes out.

The majority of games we have lost could have gone the other way if we had done that better.

Myself and the lads are raring to go and hope we can get a positive result today to kick the new year off in style.

PRESIDENTS CUP MATCH PREVIEW

After a four week break, Southam United return to action this Saturday in an Oxfordshire Senior League Presidents Cup second round tie against Summertown Stars.

The two clubs met in the league back in September when Stars inflicted the first defeat of the season on Richard Kay’s team, running out 5-0 winners at Bobby Hancocks Park. Daniel Cadman was responsible for three of the goals and the prolific striker, now in his third season with the club, has scored 14 in just eight appearances this term and 40 in all since joining.

league the previous week and Kay will be keen to get back to winning ways this Saturday.

“We have put ourselves in a great position for the second half of the season with a lot to look forward to” said Kay. “We currently sit in the top three of a much more competitive step 7 league and are still in two cups. As I have always said, we will need to be consistent to acheive promotion and have a good run in the cups.

This will, in all honestty, come down to squad availability and circumstances.

When we train well and have a full squad for selection we are as strong as any club at our level.”

Kay will have his wish with a full squad of 20 to choose from on Saturday and the match kicks off at 1:30pm.

SOUTHAM OUT OF THE COVENTRY CHARITY CUP

Southam United Kenilworth Sporting Coventry Charity Cup

Southam United’s hopes of lifting the Coventry Charity Cup ended with a 4-2 home defeat to Midland Football League Division Two side Kenilworth Sporting.

The visitors went ahead in the 20th minute, but Ricky Barby, with his fourth goal in three matches, brought Saints level in the 35th. Jay Lawes then put them ahead on the hour, but Sporting equalised with ten minutes to go and scored two more, the last right on full time to take the tie.

“I’m not sure how we have lost that cup tie over the 90 minutes” said a dissapointed Saints manager, Richard Kay. “Overall, it was a superb team performance, but individual mistakes crept into our game and it has cost us dearly. From 2-1 up with ten minutes plus added time to go, we had one foot in the semi final and pushing for the third goal to kill the tie. Goals change games, though, and we suddenly found ourselves 3-2 down with little time left.

We have to maintain that level of performance going into our next league

game. Against Cropredy, we were flat and the overriding difference today was the attitude, mentality and mindset in our approach to the game.

We’re a good team, but there has to be a noticeable difference in our approach to cup games to some league games. It feels like a big opportunity missed to get into a cup semi final.

However, we still have so much to play for and hopefully we can learn from today for future games.”

Southam are at home again this Saturday to Eynsham Association in the Oxfordshire Senior Premier League, kick off 2.00pm.

2022 ON THE FRONT FOOT WORDS // RHIAN TILLEY

The club’s leading goal-scorer and two-time Player of the Match winner, Jay Lawes, discusses the importance of starting out the second half of the season strong, as well as how the squad is moving on from some tough, recent league and cup match defeats at Bobby Hancocks Park.

We’ve gotten through the winter break and the completion of the front half of the season. Where are you at in regards to the way the first 14 matches have gone?

Overall, I think the first half of the season has gone well, everyone has been working hard and it has been displayed on the pitch.

We’ve scored a lot of goals and have played some really good football, especially in the big games.

The recent defeat at home to Cropredy felt like a very tough loss. Was there a bit of a hangover for the Kenilworth game? Or did it feel like two completely different matches in their own right?

The Cropredy game was a tough result to take, we were not sharp enough from the start and found it hard to get going during the game. Going into the Kenilworth game we knew it would be a bigger challenge and I thought we were very unlucky with the result; we played some good football but were let down with poor refereeing decisions throughout the whole game.

You’ve been in great form since the last time we spoke; topping the team goal-scoring leader-board, picking up multiple POTM awards, etc. What do you think has helped you to find that form so quickly after joining the team at the end of September?

The team has helped me hugely in each game to get my goals, as well as Rich and the coaching

staff, so can only thank them. The training sessions have been high intensity which helps a lot when transferring what we train to the pitch.

With multiple additions committing to the club after you arrived, we’ve finally hit that 20-man squad that Rich had been looking for and it feels like the team has really come together. Do you see a group that is really gelling and hitting their stride? Or are we still in a growth period that you see taking even longer to work itself out?

The current group of players we have are brilliant, we have a lot of quality all across the pitch and we all get along really well.

We have played some class football in many games this season and have destroyed teams with our work ethic on and off the ball. We have had a few games where we haven’t been at our best especially in the league, but we have learnt from these games and will put it right starting from Saturday.

With multiple games in hand over the teams above us, we currently sit 4th in the league. Do you think this is a fair reflection of how the season has gone so far? Or do you think we’ve let some opportunities slip that might come back to haunt us in the end?

As mentioned previously there has been 1 or 2 games where we haven’t been at our best and should’ve beat the teams that we lost to but overall, I think we are in a good position sat in 4th as we have many games in hand that will hopefully bring us up to 2nd if we perform. Then the crucial game for us will be Bicester at home which we are all buzzing for.

It’s no secret that the club has set its sights on promotion to Step 6. In your opinion, what will be the most important factors to getting us to that goal?

The most important things that will get us to step 6 promotion will be for us to

keep working hard in training and taking what we do there into the games. We need to go into every game with the correct mindset and take each game as they come.

What is your mindset as a natural goal scorer going into a match, like today’s, against a team who have allowed as many goals as they have? Does that fill you with confidence? Pressure? Excitement?

SUMMERTOWN STARS AFC It was an unexpected defeat for Southam United when the they came up against today’s opposition earlier this season. The 5-0 scoreline shocked the crowd at Bobby Hancocks Park, and the squad will be looking for redemption in today’s cup match.

In the meantime, this Summertown Stars AFC team has gone on to win 5, and lose 5 of the 10 league matches they’ve played, while amassing 37 goals for, and 31 goals against, during the run.

Summertown’s Presidents Cup journey includes just one other match, a 2-0 victory over Halse United, on the 13th of

November. Goals from Liam Palfreeman and Alex Thomson proved the difference between the two sides and advanced the Stars to today’s match at Bobby Hancocks Park.

Summertown will be looking for a positive result in today’s cup tie as they have bowed out of both the OFA Senior Cup, to Ardley United FC, and the OFA Charity Cup, to Hailey FC. They will be leaning heavily on leading goalscorer, Daniel Cadman, who boasts 14 goals in just 9 matches in all competitions and will be looking to improve that tally when Summertown lines up in today’s match.
